Learning together to fulfil our dreams

WELCOME TO HUSBANDS BOSWORTH CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Husbands Bosworth Church of England Primary School is a primary school for children between the ages of four and eleven years old. The school has strong links with the local church of All Saints in the village. Husbands Bosworth is a busy, thriving village and the school is situated near the crossroads of the A4304 and A5199. th

Steeped in history, the school has been open since 1858 and celebrated its 150 anniversary in 2008.

We have a new purpose built modular classroom which was completed during Easter 2009. This is situated at the end of School Lane next to our sports field; this is the base for our Foundation and year one children. This brand new facility includes an all weather secure learning environment. There is also an adventure play trail for them to use on the field, this was funded by the parents through our very successful Friends of Bosworth group. The sports field is large and contains a wild area for natural habitat study, and a pond. The sports field is used regularly for both PE lessons, playtimes, football matches and after school activities.

The school benefits from a very dedicated team of teachers and support staff. The teaching establishment comprises of the Headteacher plus three full-time teachers and one part-time teacher. We also have four learning support assistants, one higher learning teaching assistant, two office staff and a part-time bursar. We have three lunchtime supervisors and a premises officer. All our staff have high expectations with regards to the children’s learning, work and behaviour.

In order to help pupils achieve their full potential we are committed to providing a learning environment where the achievements of all are valued, where individuals are respected and where children are encouraged and supported to fully develop their skills and knowledge.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our very happy, safe and successful school.

SCHOOL AIMS Our aim is to create a happy, safe and stimulating environment within which all stakeholders can be encouraged and supported to develop their academic, spiritual, creative, moral, social and physical skills in order to achieve their full potential. We aim to provide a relevant, broad based and balanced curriculum offering the widest possible range of learning experiences to all pupils regardless of gender, race, creed or ability so that they may grow in confidence, ability and self-esteem. We will also: 

Help pupils acquire knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary and adult life, community and employment in a fast changing world.

Help pupils develop lively and enquiring minds, develop the ability to question appropriately and rationally and to encourage application to tasks and physical skills.

Encourage children to take increased responsibility in managing their own learning and behaviour.

Help and encourage pupils to take responsibility for assessing and evaluating their own progress and achievements and the subsequent identification of their own individual targets.

Raise the expectations and ambitions of all pupils by providing challenge and encouraging perseverance through good work habits and a healthy lifestyle.

Encourage respect for religious and moral values, tolerance of other races, religions, abilities and ways of life by helping pupils explore their attitudes to other people, other cultures and the community through both the formal and informal curriculum.

Help pupils understand the continuity of the educational process and to prepare them for the next stage with confidence.

Support, encourage and continue the professional development of all staff and governors.

Ensure communication between staff, governors, parents and the wider community is regular and appropriate.

Regular reviews will be undertaken at whole school level to ensure our aims match the needs of the children and the requirements of the Curriculum as well as reflecting the ethos and principles associated with our being a Church School.

THE SCHOOL ETHOS

Husbands Bosworth School has two important ambitions. One is to provide a high quality Christian education for the children and the other is to serve and support the local community. The school serves the needs of all children in the community regardless of their religion. Christianity teaches us that we should care for all and celebrate those things that make us different. It is in recognition of this, that we wish to teach respect for all individuals and an understanding of the beliefs and cultures of others which is reflected within the ethos of the school as well as it's curriculum. We are totally opposed to prejudice attitudes and behaviour of any kind in our school.

 Being small means that you can know and trust almost everyone.  When we raise money it makes me feel that everyone takes part.  When we raise money it makes me feel that everyone takes part. 

 We take part in events as a whole school not just as a class.  We take part in a large variety of sports.  We do some exciting plays and performances.  It’s small and easy to make friends. 

ORGANISATION The school is organised into 3 classes, according to age. The children within these classes are taught in small groups or at times individually.

Class 1

Foundation & Yr.1

- Taught in the new mobile annex

Class 2

Year 2 & Year 3

- Taught in the main school building

Class 3

Year 4, Year 5 & Year 6

- Taught in the main school building

The older children are encouraged to look after the younger ones and to set them a good example in behaviour and in the standard of work expected. The teaching is well organised and we adopt a flexible approach. Therefore, the children can work individually or in groups or as a complete class unit, as the curriculum and the individual child's needs demands. Our older children are currently split into small groups to be taught numeracy and literacy. These 3 groups are all taught by a teacher and supported by an LSA or HLTA.

THE SCHOOL WEEK We aim to give each child a varied and stimulating learning experience throughout their school life at Husbands Bosworth. This means that each day is carefully organised to ensure a balanced and broad curriculum.

Children have daily Maths and English lessons and study History, Geography, Religious Education., Physical Education (including swimming), PSHE, Technology, Art and Music. Some of these may be taught as "blocks" over the course of a one/two week period. We also deliver an enhanced curriculum through workshops, visits and trips. This enables us to teach areas that may not be covered in the normal day to day lessons in a hands on practical way. Each area of the curriculum is carefully planned, with depth, breadth, differentiation and progression being the main aims.

There is also the ongoing philosophy throughout the whole school and in every area of the curriculum, that of caring, sharing, tolerance and working together. This is important to our school ethos and the religious beliefs that underpin and support this.

LUNCHTIME ARRANGEMENTS Hot lunches are provided by the School Food Support Service at Leicestershire County Council at a cost of £2.05 per meal. We run a choice menu, menus are sent out each Monday and to be returned by 9.00 am Thursday with the money. As an alternative to hot lunches the children may bring a packed lunch into school to be eaten on the premises. We request that sandwich lunches are sent to school in a named plastic container. For safety reasons we do not allow glass bottles or cans. Drinks should be brought to school in a plastic container. Please send an ordinary lunch box which contains the flask.

We are a healthy school and therefore request that parents / carers support this with the food they give their children for their packed lunches. We would like your support by not including sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks in packed lunches.

The children eat in the hall sitting at tables and chairs, however on nice days, children with packed lunches may eat either in the playground or if it’s dry enough, on the field. The children are supervised by lunchtime supervisors who work closely with the teaching staff. We also have year 6 ‘play leaders’ who lead games with our younger Key Stage 1 children.

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

BEHAVIOUR & DISCIPLINE Discipline begins at home when adults expect their child to follow simple rules for behaviour and safety and carry out simple instructions. Such discipline at home provides them with good foundations for when they arrive to school and are expected to follow simple rules and accepting discipline at school.

School discipline at Husbands Bosworth is consistent and encourages self-discipline. The rules are simple, kept to a minimum and the same throughout the school. We expect each person to treat everyone with courtesy, respect and show a sense of responsibility for their own and other people's possessions and for the health and safety of everyone.

There is an acceptable standard of behaviour underpinned by the positive, firm but fair attitudes of the staff. Bullying in any form is NOT accepted at Husbands Bosworth Primary School.

SCHOOL RULES As this is a Primary School we have simple rules. Any issues concerning behaviour or discipline are dealt with as and when they arise and most issues do not require parental involvement. The rules are made explicit to the children at the beginning of the school year and are as follows: 1. Listen carefully and follow instructions. 2. Walk quietly and sensibly in school. 3. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. 4. Bullying, swearing and racist comments are not acceptable. 5. Work and play in a way which does not disturb others. 6. Look after equipment properly. 7. NO SWEETS are to be brought into school at any time.

CONSEQUENCES The sanctions run sequentially: 1) Verbal warning – All behaviour receives this initial verbal warning unless serious. 2) Yellow card – If the behaviour continues the child will be placed on a yellow card. 3) Orange card – low level behaviour will result in an orange card being given. Examples of such behaviour would include such as disrupting lessons, disobeying rules, annoying others and refusing to follow instructions. An orange card would result in the child missing their playtime. They will remain in the classroom under supervision. Should the child’s behaviour continue in this time they will receive a red card.

9

Learning together to fulfil our dreams 4) Red card – More serious behaviour will result in a red card instead of an orange card. Examples of such behaviour would include verbal abuse or physical abuse to children or adults, swearing and prejudice. A red card would result in the child being sent to sit outside the Headteacher’s office and to discuss their behaviour with the Headteacher. 5) Meeting with Parents – If three red cards are received in one term the parents will be asked to join the Headteacher and class teacher for a meeting to discuss their child’s behaviour.

REWARDS House points The children are put into 4 houses when they enter school. There is a house point system where children are awarded house points for effort in work and for good behaviour. The children get a certificate which is presented in church once they complete their bronze, silver and gold house point charts.

Headteacher awards We also have a reward assembly every Friday morning in which one child from each class is presented with a Headteacher award. The child will receive a certificate and a sticker (Key Stage 1) or a wristband (Key Stage 2).

Class awards Each teacher will also have a reward system for their own class. They may be awarded the ‘star of the week’ award or become a classroom monitor. All teachers reward the children for achievements, improvements and behaviour.

ABSENCE OR ILLNESS If your child is absent please ring the school to notify them or send a written note to school explaining the reason when your child returns. When the absence is to be lengthy (2 weeks or more) - please notify the school as soon as possible. If no reason is given for a child’s absence then this will be recorded as unauthorised. If your child walks to school on their own, please ring school before 9.00 am to inform us if your child will not be attending. Absences from school other than that caused by illness should be kept to a minimum, for your child's sake.

PLANNED AND UNPLANNED ABSENCES Husbands Bosworth School has a very good record of pupil attendance. We do ask for a note or telephone call about any absence. The Department of Further Education asks all schools to fill in forms about reasons for children's absences.

Therefore, please try to keep any absence to a

minimum, and make any dental or doctors appointments that are not emergencies out of school time. The Governors do not expect parents to arrange holidays during term time. Even the odd day during the last week of term can be disruptive to the child and life of the class.

However, we do understand that there may be rare occasions when an absence is necessary, often family related.

13

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

SICKNESS OR INJURY The school maintains a list of home, work and emergency telephone numbers for each child so that the Parents/Guardians can be contacted in the event of sickness, injury or emergency. It is the responsibility of the Parents/Guardians to inform the school office of any change to these contact telephone numbers. It is vital that these are always kept up to date. This is the responsibility of the Parents / Guardians.

If a child is injured, the Parents/Guardians will be informed as quickly as possible and if necessary an ambulance will be called. If the child requires urgent medical attention he/she will be taken to the local surgery immediately and Parents will be informed. In the case of sickness, the Parents/Guardians will be asked to collect the child from school.

Please do not send your child to school if they have been sick or had diarrhoea in the night or that morning. The local authority guidelines state that the child must not be sent into school for 24 hours afterwards.

If you feel your child is unable to join in with PE lessons for a medical reason then it is necessary to inform the school / teacher of this, prior to the lesson. Participating in physical education is a statutory requirement and a curriculum entitlement, therefore a child needs parental permission to not take part in this.

HEALTH ADVICE The school nurse is Laura Cowperthwaite.

She can be contacted at the Cottage Hospital in

Lutterworth. Telephone 01455 550392.

Parents are responsible for checking for and treating headlice and worms and informing the school if they are found.

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

THE CURRICULUM Husbands Bosworth believes the purpose of education is to educate the whole child to it's full potential - academically, socially, physically, spiritually and morally.

The aim of the school is to provide a happy educational environment where children have fun and as a result flourish. We provide a high standard of education which focuses on their academic and social development. We promote a responsible attitude to school work and encourage and develop the child’s self-discipline and independence.

We aim to prepare each child for the challenges that lay ahead in the future. We seek to achieve these aims through a carefully structured programme throughout the school using a range of teaching methods. The school maintains a broad and flexible curriculum by regular review. It also encourages professional development for teachers.

During a normal school week the teaching time (excluding assemblies, registration, breaks etc.) is 23 hours 30 minutes for the junior children and 22 hours 15 minutes for the infants.

Details of all the work to be covered will be sent home at the start of each term by the class teacher. Parents are also welcome to make an appointment to come into school to discuss this further with their child’s class teacher.

The school structures the curriculum and lessons to ensure progression in all subjects for all children. Personalised learning is important to our school and all lessons are planned to meet all of the children’s needs through differentiation.

We aim to deliver a creative and innovative curriculum through a carefully structured learning programme throughout the school. This programme reflects the National Curriculum, QCA guidance and what we consider to be best practice.

Typically the children are taught Mathematics and English in the mornings and a range of other subjects in the afternoon. However, where possible we try to teach cross curricular and amalgamate subjects together. An example would be to teach creative writing through a history topic.

15

Learning together to fulfil our dreams The subjects taught at Husbands Bosworth are:

Mathematics

Design and Technology (including cooking)

English (including drama)

History

Science

Geography

ICT

Art

Religious Education

Music

P.E. (including dance)

French

Personal, Social & Health Education

Swimming

The children within school will cover the work in Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7 years) and Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11 years). They will be formally assessed at the end of each Key Stage.

16

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

Foundation Stage This is the first year when your child begins at school. We now have a single entry at the beginning of the school year for all Foundation children which means all children start at the beginning of the school year. Our aim for these children is to give them the best possible experience of school. We do by making lessons as fun as possible and providing opportunities for them to learn through play. The Foundation Stage curriculum focus’ on the 6 areas of learning, these are: 

Personal, social and emotional development

Communication, language and literacy

Mathematical development

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Physical development

Creative development

The Foundation stage children are based in our modular classroom located next to the school playing field. This classroom has a covered outdoor learning environment and also has a fenced green area which includes a play trail and tyre park.

The Foundation stage children are based with the year 1 children, this class is known as class 1. The Foundation Stage children are given many opportunities to learn and play together with the year 1 children during the course of the school week. At breaktimes and lunchtimes the Foundation children play in the playground or field with all other children in school. Class 1 are based in the modular building in our field area at the end of School Lane. This building also has an enclosed outside learning environment which includes a hard surface area, grass area, play trail and tyre park. The children are always given opportunities to learn outdoors.

17

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

KEY STAGE 1 In this department emphasis is on the communication skills of speech, reading and writing alongside the development of basic mathematical concepts. Alongside the core teaching and learning we aim to help the child develop an awareness of the world around them including people past and present, events, natural objects and the local and global environment. We believe it is also vital to support the children in their physical development and developing social awareness, empathy and independence. At the end of Key Stage 1, in year 2, the children take their KS1 SATS tests.

KEY STAGE 2 In the junior classes positive attitudes towards learning and the development of appropriate skills in preparation for adult life take place. Greater emphasis is placed upon developing independence and responsibility. Children in Key Stage 2 are prepared and ready for their transition to Key Stage 3 and their move to a new school. At the end of every year in Key Stage 2 the children are given nationally recognised tests. At the end of year 6 the children take their KS2 SATS tests.

18

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION We are a Church of England School and therefore the teaching and learning of religious education is a very important aspect of our school life. We believe that R.E. makes a vital contribution in developing the spiritual and moral aspects of a child. As a Church Controlled School we teach from bible stories and from historical and present day examples.

We begin each day with an assembly which is always underpinned by Christian values of life. Assemblies are led by teachers and other invited guests, including various Christian religious ministers from the local area. Once a fortnight the children attend an ‘Open the book’ assembly led by the leaders of the local church and members of the congregation. Each assembly focus’ on a different biblical story and involves drama and music. Children are also given the opportunity to lead assemblies and each class leads an assembly every term.

We work very closely with our local church and clergy and are very proud of this.

19

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

SWIMMING When the children reach year 2 they begin swimming lessons. During the spring term they have weekly lessons at the Leisure Centre in Market Harborough. These lessons are led by a number of qualified swimming instructors and the groups are differentiated to suit all abilities. The school joins in the local small schools swimming gala which is held annually towards the end of the year. As the children start at year 2 and have such a substantial amount of lessons we have many good swimmers in school, many of which swim for local swimming clubs or at county level.

SCHOOL CLUBS All children are given opportunities to take part in extra curricular activities that are provided by the staff, either during or after school. These vary according to the time of year.

In previous years extra curricular clubs have included athletics, dance, tennis, football, netball, tri-golf, nature club, drama, science, rounders and chess. Most clubs are free for the children at school and are well attended. Sometimes, through liaising with parents, we may put an after school club on for a charge through an external provider. The Headteacher oversees the running of this club and the staff are legally obligated to the same safeguarding checks and requirements that all other staff in the school are expected to meet.

20

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

HOMEWORK Children are encouraged to share learning experiences with parents. They are asked to do some work at home. Children are given regular spellings and tables to learn for a weekly test. It is a good idea to support your child in these by helping them practice at home. All children are expected to take their reading books home also. Please make sure you are helping your child and not confusing them CHECK with the Teacher what your child should be doing (i.e.: how much they should read, or should they should be learning sounds, etc.) Also, please encourage your child to look after their books. Regrettably, a charge must be made for items which are lost or damaged. As the child progresses through the school, so the level of homework also increases.

All children also take home a weekly maths game. In this folder will be instructions, equipment and game boards. We ask parents, siblings or family members to play this with the child and record their comments in the child’s record book. These record books are then read and monitored by the class teacher and comments noted. We ask that these maths games are returned the following week, no later than Thursday. Maths games will not be changed for a new one until they are returned back to school.

Extra homework may be given from time to time from individual teachers. This is often to extend or develop a current topic in class. This is given at the discretion of the class teacher.

21

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

PROVISION FOR CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES As a child progresses through the school their class teacher will regularly assess development, and if necessary additional attention will be given to the child in areas of difficulty. Where it is considered that a child may have more significant learning difficulties, then in consultation with Parents/Guardians, they will be put onto the school Special Needs Register and if necessary referred to the Central Special Needs Service from where specialist staff can come to assess the individual child's difficulties. If it is found that a child has considerable needs, then a ‘statement’ is prepared for the child which stipulates the additional specialist teaching help to be made available within the school. Pupils with Special Education Needs are identified as soon as possible. Meetings are arranged with class teacher/SENCO/parents. The difficulty is assessed and an appropriate action plan is devised. Where necessary appropriate outside agencies are brought in for assessment and advice. In some cases ‘Individual Education Plans’ are drawn up and these are reviewed each term. Parents are consulted about these, copies are sent home and progress is reported back.

PUPILS WITH DISABILITIES Husbands Bosworth follows and meets the Disability Act both in terms of accessing the environment, the curriculum and the information. Children with disabilities are given the same learning opportunities as all other children in the school. All children with disabilities will be considered for admission to this school and those coming from outside the catchment area will be considered where the planned admission limit has not been achieved.

PUPILS WITH DISABILITIES BEING TREATED LESS FAVOURABLY

All children have access to the National Curriculum. Tasks and activities are differentiated to meet the needs of all children. We are committed to a multidisciplinary approach to meeting SEN. We do not label children and always work towards improving self-image and positive attitudes for all children.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

At Husbands Bosworth C of E primary school there is a commitment to providing equal opportunities for all children, whatever, their gender, colour, creed or social background. Discrimination in whatever form is actively opposed and children are encouraged to grow in respect for themselves and others.

22

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

SCHOOL STATEMENT ON RACISM Schools play an important role in helping children to form attitudes in a multi cultural society and at Husbands Bosworth C of E school we endeavour to work with children and parents to deter racial prejudice and discrimination. We do this by helping them to develop an empathy, tolerance and awareness of the richness and diversity of the society in which they live so that they become caring, positive, constructive and active citizens. This will be achieved by : 

giving all pupils equality of opportunity

sharing our different traditions, knowledge, cultures and beliefs

teaching children that they all have an important part to play in school life and the community at large

encouraging all people involved with the school to promote an understanding of and sensitivity to other cultures.

CHILD PROTECTION PROCEDURES In school one of our main priorities is your child's welfare. We follow very strict child protection regulations, guidelines and procedures led by Leicestershire and Leicester Safeguarding Board for Child Protection. Everyone who works and helps in school is given a child protection check (CRB) and all staff in school are given regular child protection training. The Headteacher is the designated person in school responsible for child protection. If you want to know more about this procedure please speak to the Headteacher.

SEX EDUCATION It is our aim for sex education in this school:-

 

to be an integral part of the learning process for all children to encourage exploration of values and moral issues, consideration of sexuality and personal relationships and the development of communication and decision making skills

to foster self-esteem, self-awareness, a sense of moral responsibility and the skills to avoid and resist unwanted sexual experience

 

to be available to all pupils in year 6. to consider the value of family life

There are three basic elements with in sex education:

knowledge - learning information which is appropriate and congruent to children's lives and development

23

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

attitudes and values - exploration of values and attitudes to enable children and young people to separate fact from fiction and be able to make informed choices without prejudice

social skills - development and practice of skills of communication and interpersonal relationships. This is central to personal, social and health education as it enables young people to feel comfortable and confident about themselves and others

Sex education should help pupils make informed choices, establish a healthy lifestyle and build up a system of values. In order to achieve this a wide range of teaching methods are used including discussions, role play, looking at case studies and other active and creative ways of involving pupils in understanding the issues. Ground rules area established for group activities/discussion when dealing with sensitive issues. Where a pupil is considered to be at risk of any type of abuse, the school follows LEA procedures for Child Protection. All pupils are taught in mixed classes.

Parents are informed prior to sex education being delivered in school and are given the option to opt out. Sex education lessons are given to year 6 and delivered by the school nurse. Parents are invited in to discuss this with her prior to the lessons being delivered.

PROCEDURES FOR POLICY MONITORING AND EVALUATION We are committed to monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of our school, teaching and curriculum.

This is achieved by:

pupil feedback & questionaires

staff review and feedback

parental feedback & questionaires

OFSTED inspection

LA school improvement partner work

Teacher assessment

Nationally recognised tests

Learning together to fulfil our dreams

SCHOOL SECURITY The school takes security very seriously. While trying to keep the 'open door' policy of the school and valuing the ethos, the safety of the children at all times is paramount. Husbands Bosworth School is an old building and has many entrances this has some security implications that we have to consider. We are constantly improving the security of the school with support from the local authority.

We have a Visitors Book and we ask all visitors to the school to sign in. We also ask that you sign your child ‘out’ should you have the need to take them out for appointments or in the event of illness.

The front door has a remote electronic opening device. There are padlocked gates at the back of the school. The mobile now has a second security light. All external doors are operated via a magnetic fob system to further the children’s safety. This also applies to the mobile. These doors will be open until 9.00am and at playtimes and lunch times and again at 3.15pm. All visitors will need to go to the front door and push the buzzer for admittance.

We request that children are not taken from the premises without the schools knowledge and are always signed out.

ROAD SAFETY All children must use the hand gate into School Lane (from here the whole length of the Lane is in view). Parents are urged NOT TO PARK CARS IN SCHOOL LANE, thus blocking the view and access to private housing. The Police have suggested that parents who are waiting to collect their children come into the playground to wait, this relieves congestion on the pavement and makes it safer for the children.

Road Safety Officers visit school each year with tapes and slides to give added emphasis to the children to proceed with caution. If parents could include the Green Cross Code along with nursery rhymes, it would be a great help. We have 2 year 6 pupils every year that are appointed as ‘Junior Road Safety officers’. These children work with the local authority on issues of road safety. Years 6 have ‘cycle wise’ lessons in either the autumn or summer term culminating in a written and practical test. The Cycling Proficiency courses are organised by Leicestershire Education Authority.

DOGS The Governing body asks that no dogs should be brought into the school grounds because of Health and Safety reasons - this includes the playground and the school playing field.

USING CAMERAS AT SCHOOL EVENTS We have been advised by the Leicestershire Education Authority to notify parents of the following guidelines: "Parents and relatives of pupils should note that any photographs or video film they take at school events are likely to contain images of other children whose parents will not have given permission for them to be filmed or photographed. Such images should not be circulated more widely than the family, ie. they should just be for the family's use. Our advice is that any manipulation or distribution of images of children could result in prosecution." No photographs or video taken in school of children other than your own should ever be put on the internet. Any such cases would be dealt with through the official authorities.

FUND-RAISING We have an enthusiastic and energetic fund raising committee called F.O.B.S (Friends of Bosworth School.) The committee comprises of parents and friends and anyone who wishes to join. A variety of events have been organised and have been well supported. Staff and Governors are always welcome to join in.

Over the last few years F.O.B.S have raised money for the following events: 

The play trail on the field,

School swimming, (F.O.B.S pay for half of all costs)

Themed weeks, e.g. gardening equipment

Curriculum resources, eg, reading books,

Extra curricular visits, e.g. trip to Beaumanor.

Projects, such as a new library

The school is always grateful for the extra help and support that F.O.B.S provides.

ADMISSION OF CHILDREN At the start of Autumn 2009, our school changed its admissions policy. All children who are 4 and who will become 5 during the school year are admitted at the start of the autumn term. Therefore we do not have a January intake. Children will not be admitted to school earlier or younger than this

We are approached by parents who live out of our catchment area. Where numbers permit we are pleased to admit the child dependant of course on the parents accepting responsibility for getting their child/ren to school on time and collecting them at 3.15 p.m. when school finishes. All requests should be made to the school in the first instance and then to the Local Education Authority.

Children with special difficulties recommended by the School Medical Officer, Family General Practitioner or the Social Services Department are sometimes admitted early.

Before your child starts school it would be helpful if they could do the following things:-

Tie shoelaces

Dress and undress

Remove items of outdoor clothing and hang them on hooks

Use the toilet properly

Wash and dry hands and face

Tidy up after using toys, apparatus and books

ADVICE TO PARENTS RE: ADMISSIONS New regulations state all parents need to request a place at the school of their choice regardless of whether it is within the catchment area or not. You are advised to put down your child's name as early as possible to ensure the school knows about your child and has him/her on the list. If you live outside the catchment area and wish your child to attend Husbands Bosworth C/E Primary School you should make an appointment to visit the school and talk to the Headteacher.

The Local Education Authority also ask you to visit your in-catchment school. If you still wish your child to attend Husbands Bosworth, please inform the Headteacher and then put your request in writing to:-

Allocations Section, Education Department, County Hall, Glenfield, LEICESTER LE3 8RF

You will need to state your reasons, i.e. after careful consideration of both schools you wish your child to attend Husbands Bosworth C/E Primary School. You already have a child at the school etc. Applications are available form the school or from allocations section directly. Alternatively, parents can apply on line at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions.

You will be told by letter that if there is a place you will be informed nearer the time. Parents can appeal against the decision, if it goes against them. We have never, yet, had a request for a child to attend our school refused.

Our planned admission limit is currently 12 children per year.

TRANSFER The majority of children transfer at the age of eleven years to Lutterworth High School where they stay until they are fourteen when they transfer to Lutterworth Community College. Days for leavers to visit the High School are arranged each year during the final term. Teachers from this school regularly liaise with both Lutterworth schools to ensure continuity of education.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT/ CONTACT WITH THE SCHOOL At Husbands Bosworth C of E school we value the importance of home school partnerships and we welcome your close and active interest in your child’s progress. We hope that you will remain involved throughout your child’s education and that you will share his/her achievements and successes. The school is always open to parents wishing to come in, whether it be for a specific concern or for your general interest.

If you wish to visit the school or to see any member of staff please ring the school office to make an appointment. Teachers are usually available either before 9.00 a.m. or after 3.15 p.m. If you require an alternative appointment, this can be arranged by contacting the school office. Parents can also make an appointment to see the Headteacher if they so wish by phoning the office or speaking to the office staff directly.

We consult parents on various issues and welcome the feedback. We send out an annual questionnaire and welcome any constructive feedback. Parent/Teacher interviews are held three times a year, during each term. Written reports are sent out at the end of the Summer Term.

PUPIL INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL

At Husbands Bosworth we always endeavour to listen to the ‘pupil voice’. The views of all our students are extremely important to us and often very useful and that give some interesting insight. We give the pupils opportunities to share their views regularly through less formal methods such as class conversations. We also have more formal means of gathering the pupils views, we do this through a school council and through an annual pupil questionnaire.

CHARGING POLICY The Governors of the school have drawn up the following policy in conjunction with the Leicestershire Education Authority which supports the principle of free education, the 1988 Education Reform Act allows the L.E.A. and Governors discretion to make charges under certain circumstances. 1.

The school will supply books, materials and other equipment for use in connection with education provided during the day.

2.

For practical subjects such as craft, design and technology, art and cooking the school will provide the ingredients and materials needed. Parents will be asked to pay for the finished product if they wish to own it.

3.

Parents will be asked to make an advance voluntary contribution towards the cost of specific activities available to their child. In each case, if sufficient contributions are not received, the activity may be cancelled at the discretion of the Head. The school has a policy to meet costs on a discretionary basis for families in financial need.

4.

Timetabled swimming will continue while parents are willing to contribute voluntarily towards the cost. Where parents are unwilling to contribute, their child will be funded until he or she reaches the basic National Curriculum required level.

The cost of swimming is subsidised through

F.O.B.S. 5.

Where any damage is caused wilfully by a pupil the parent may be asked to pay for that damage.

COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE If a parent has a complaint about any aspect of education which is related to an individual school they should first of all raise the matter with the Head of the school concerned, who will consult with Staff and Governors as appropriate. Most complaints are settled at this stage. If there is a continuing concern the complainant will be advised by the Head to write to the Director of Education explaining the difficulty and asking for it to be investigated. The correct procedure is as follows:

If there is a problem contact the relevant member of staff or Headteacher to make an appointment to discuss it.

If the parent is still not happy – contact the Headteacher again to explain reasons for continued dissatisfaction.

If still unhappy, the parent will be advised to put complaint in writing to Governors.

Governors will consider complaint and consult staff or parents concerned.

If parents are still not satisfied they will be advised to write to the Director of Education.
