Dear Parent/Carer. Welcome to our church school. At All Saints we aim to create a climate of trust, co-operation and participation. ETHOS AND VALUES OF THE SCHOOL We are a Church of England, Voluntary Aided Primary School supported by All Saints Church. The school serves the needs of children from nursery, aged 3 years old through to 11 years old in Year 6. As an “aided” school, the Church is responsible for the upkeep of the school, supported by the Department of Education and Local Authority. This means the Governors of the school are responsible for funding part of the cost of any maintenance and improvements.

To achieve this, a variety of teaching methods will be used and include class teaching, teacher exposition, practical activities and collaborative group work. The following pages give you more specific information about the life of the school, but please feel free to contact school if you wish to look around or require further information.

Ofsted, Inspection and accreditation. Ofsted/SIAMS The school was inspected in July 2014 the inspectors said that ‘All Saints is a good because Pupils make good progress from their starting points, including those who are eligible for the pupil premium and those who are disabled or have special educational needs. Standards at the end of all three key stages have improved and are above average in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of Year 6. Teachers expect the best from pupils in terms of the amount and quality of their work. They help pupils to improve through effective marking that gives clear guidance to individuals on the next steps in learning. Pupils swiftly learn to identify letters and the sounds they represent (phonics) because the teaching of this subject is particularly well organised. As a result, standards in reading at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2 continue to rise. Adults apply the school’s behaviour policy consistently so that pupils know what is expected of them. There is very rarely any disruption to learning in any lessons and pupils behave sensibly in and around the school. Pupils feel safe in school and know that they are always treated fairly. Relationships are excellent and pupils know that any concerns will always be taken seriously. School leadership is strong, including that of the governing body. Most teaching is now good and an increasing proportion is outstanding. The RE/church inspector found that our strengths were Behaviour is outstanding and expectations are consistently linked to the school’s core Christian values. As a result, children demonstrate high levels of self-esteem and awareness of others. All members of the community know that they are valued and the ethos of trust and respect is clearly evident. Children are extremely courteous, friendly and responsible. They know that their opinions and ideas are valued. They comment that they are able to share concerns with their teachers and they know that these will be addressed in a sensitive way. School Times Doors open at 8.50am for the start of nursery and school or 8.45am if it is raining. Parents of younger children are welcome to accompany their child into class if they wish but we encourage children to come into school independently from Year 2 upwards. To ensure your child is safe at the end of the day it is Governors policy not to release any child in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to anyone who is, or looks, under the age of 16.

The Governing Body meet once every term. They discuss all issues concerning the school from curriculum to buildings. There are a number of small committees such as finance, staffing, buildings and curriculum, which meet as required to assist in the smooth running of the school. A list of Governor’s and the basis of their appointment is available from the school office. Parent/Carers We know that to achieve the best for our children it is important to work in partnership with parents. We value the thoughts and support of parents and welcome you into the school. Due to security we ask parents to come into school through the main door, other than at the start and end of the school day when leaving or collecting children. Parents are invited into school to work in class alongside pupils, share acts of worship, discuss any concerns, help raise money and support particular events. Parents are represented on the Governing body through the elected Parent Governor. Parents can support their child’s work in school by reading and sharing books with them, helping collect and research information for different topics and by helping their child to learn spellings, number bonds and tables and, more importantly, fostering a positive attitude in their child towards their learning and school life.

Rewards and Sanctions To encourage and reward children in school we use a range of rewards and certificates, for example, merit certificates, stickers and comments. The school has a consistent approach to how we support all children through the implementation of a behaviour and discipline policy. Occasionally sanctions need to be applied. For children who frequently choose the wrong actions we inform and work with parents and ask that parents support school when sanctions have to be used. We welcome contributions from home, for example, copies of swimming certificates or photographs of particular achievements which we will share in worship times. Our school behaviour policy and all other related policies mentioned can be viewed on the school web site, http://www.hindleyallsaints.wigan.sch.uk/school-information/policies Attendance It is essential that children attend punctually and regularly. It is very difficult for children who arrive late to settle into their class work and catch up with what they have missed. Parents are asked to ensure that children do not miss out through inappropriate absence or lateness. Parents who allow their children to have frequent unauthorised absence may be referred to the Local Authority for support and/or legal action. Holidays and authorised absence from school. Parents should avoid taking children out of school during term time wherever possible. The Government gives the Governing Body of the school, via the Head teacher, right to grant up to a maximum of 10 days authorised absence but only in extenuating circumstances. If parents wish to take their child out of school they should complete a request for absence form stating why their child needs time out of school and for how many days. Forms can be downloaded from the school web site. Child Protection We have a duty of care to the children at our school and we work closely with the child protection team, the Gateway team and Social Care. There may be occasions that we have to call on these for advice, however, we will ensure, whenever possible, that parents/carers are kept informed at all times should concerns in this area arise. Uniform and appearance All children wear school uniform. It helps to give a sense of belonging and pride and helps children choose appropriate school wear each day. Appropriate appearance enhances the feeling that learning is not only fun but a serious part of their life. Inappropriate hair styles

can isolate children in school and reduce the feeling of belonging and the sense of importance for their own learning. Parents of children with inappropriate hair styles, including shaved designs and tram lines, will be asked to remedy the situation as soon as possible. Our school uniform can be purchased on-line from Tesco at http://www.clothingattesco.com/wigan/hindley-all-saints-cofe-primary-school/invt/106471/ Similar styles and colours to our uniform can be purchased at most high street shops. Children will also need a PE kit. It is essential that children have a change of clothes including footwear on PE days. For Health and Safety reasons children should not wear jewellery, especially earrings, in school. The wearing of earrings has caused several serious accidents in some schools, occurring both in PE lessons and playtimes. If earrings have to be worn they should be the small stud kind and children must remove them themselves or cover them with a plaster during PE. Children should have an appropriate hair cut and style whilst in school. Shaved lines and inappropriate designs are not suitable for primary children in school. Due to limited space, please keep PE kit in a draw string bag.

Kitchen Academy Family Dining at Lunchtime Our kitchen is managed and controlled by ourselves. This means we have complete choice in the quality of food and menu provision. It also means we can use the facilities to hold parent and pupil cooking workshops and offer a range of additional services too. Children can choose a hot main meal or a range of sandwiches. For afters, they have a choice of desserts including fruit every day. We operate a ‘family dining experience’ where children are taught how to behave, set out their place setting and eat appropriately, as if they were eating at a restaurant. Most children choose a school meal. If you choose to send a packed lunch from home please follow our healthy lunch advice [below] so that your child has the right nutritional balance to make sure they are ready for learning in the afternoon. Children are not allowed fizzy drinks, sweets and toffees in their packed lunch and only one, small chocolate item such as a penguin biscuit if you choose to send chocolate. Both inside and outside children are cared for by teaching assistants under the supervision of senior members of staff and are encouraged to participate in one of many game activities that are organised each day.

Curriculum. Our curriculum is constantly reviewed alongside the National Curriculum in order to provide continuity and progression at each stage. All work is carefully planned and differentiated to meet the needs of individual children and to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. We teach Literacy, Numeracy and Science as discreet subjects and the other elements of the curriculum are taught in creative, topic based ways. We include cross curricular elements in our work. These include Health Education, Environmental Education, Economic and Industrial Understanding and Citizenship. Our policy statements take account of Equal Opportunities and Multi-Cultural education. Within each class, teachers employ a variety of teaching methods and grouping criteria based on the needs of the children and the teaching and learning objectives at the time. Year 1 – Year 6 English English is a priority of the school, and is taught as a distinct subject every day. We give children the opportunity to develop their skills of communication in speech and writing and to listen with understanding. In reading we enable them to be enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers. In writing we teach them to write confidently in several different styles. Maths Taught every day; children are encouraged to learn number bonds and times tables. Our school continuum ensures that learning is targeted and sequential. Children have access to a web based programme called Mathletics which encourages learning at home as well as in school. Science Science is taught either on its own or through topic work ensuring breadth, balance, continuity and progression. We use a variety of methods, including first hand experiences and practical activities. Computing All classes have interactive whiteboards and internet linked computers to make learning fun, interactive and relevent. Computers are connected to the school Intranet and the Internet. Other IT equipment is used for control technology and there are facilities for digital photography and scanning. Children also have access to Ipads. Our system has securus protection which monitors every PC for inappropriate use. In addition to this, Wigan has a 24 hour filtering/firewall system.

Art Pupils are taught to express themselves in a variety of ways. Different materials and techniques like paint, pastels, clay, print, collage and fabric are used for children to design and express with. Pupils are taught to develop an understanding of the work of other artists from the locality, past and present and a variety of cultures. Music Singing and listening to music are frequently used across school. Pupils respond to and compose music using different musical instruments. The school has an active choir. Year 3 and 4 have specialist percussion music provision from Wigan Music Services each week. Music is also taught through the use of technology. P.E./Sport All pupils have at least one weekly P.E. lesson. In Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils study dance, gymnastics and games, in addition, KS2 pupils study athletics and in Year 3, swimming. Most PE in school is taught by specialists. PSHE, Citizenship and P4C. The school is strong in its work and development of PSHE, citizenship and P4C [philosophy for children] Children experience a range of lessons and learning opportunities including circle time and hot seating, as well as the opportunity to discuss issues that concern them and challenge their cultural ideas and thoughts. Parent Planners, which give an overview of the work children will be doing during the half term, are available via our school web site. These enable parents to know what their child is learning in school and to support and encourage home learning.

Early Years Foundation Stage [EYFS] Curriculum. Nursery and Reception The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies to children from birth to the end of the Reception year. At Hindley All Saints Primary School, children join the Reception class in the year that they turn five. In the year prior to this, flexible Nursery places are readily available from September with a second intake in January, if numbers allow. In partnership with parents and carers we enable the children to begin the process of becoming active learners for life. We endeavour to ensure that children “learn and develop well and kept healthy and safe.” We aim to support children in their learning through “teaching and experiences that gives children the broad range of skills that provide the right foundation for good progress through school and in life.” (Statutory Framework for the EYFS) The EYFS is based upon four principles:  A Unique Child – developing resilient, capable, confident and self-assured individuals.  Positive relationships – supporting the children in becoming strong and independent.  Enabling environments – where opportunities and experiences respond to the individual needs of the child by developing a strong partnership between practitioners, parents/carers and the child.  Learning and developing – An acknowledgement that children learn in different ways and at different rates  We aim to create an attractive and stimulating learning environment where children feel confident and secure and challenged. The children have daily access to an indoor and outdoor environment that is set up in discrete areas of learning with planned continuous provision. Effective learning builds and extends upon prior learning and following children’s interest. Effective planning is informed by observations of the children to ensure we follow their current interests and experiences. These observations are recorded in the children’s individual learning folders. Play based learning is paramount and children direct their own learning from carefully planned opportunities provided by staff. Staff will enhance play and extend as needed to further individual learning. As children grow older, and as their development allows, it is expected that the balance will gradually shift towards more activities led by adults, to help children prepare for more formal learning, ready for Year 1.

Religious Education Religious Education Policy All Saints is a Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School in which the provision for Religious Education is determined by the school’s Governing Body. The Governors expect parents, having chosen a church school, to fully support their child’s inclusion in both religious education and worship in school. Within Religious Education we aim:a) To enable children to discover their own value, to realise their potential and become healthy and whole individuals in the widest sense implicit in Christ’s teachings. b) To promote physical, moral, mental and spiritual development in the light of the Christian Gospel. c) To be a worshipping, tolerant and caring community. d) To help children acquire knowledge and skills relevant to life in a fast changing technological, multi-cultural society. e) To be part of the Anglican Church’s service to society in the specific task of education. The Governors have adopted the Liverpool Diocesan Board of Education Syllabus as a guideline. Further details of the content of the Christian and World Faith Study Units are available if required. Please contact the Head teacher who will be happy to assist. Worship at All Saints School All Saints has a Christian act of worship each day. These are led by staff, pupils and the Vicar of All Saints Church. We have assemblies on a regular basis to celebrate children’s achievements and work across school. Children also take part in class assemblies and visit Church. The aims of our worship are: a) to encourage a reflective attitude to life

b) to provide some experience and understanding of what worship, and in particular Christian worship is c) to bring children to the threshold of worship, taking into account their stages of development d) to strengthen the community and to recognise the worth of the educational work of the school e) to affirm the values, foundations and ideals of the school f) to widen the children’s repertoire of emotional response Worship at All Saints is characterised by       

Prayer Whilst recognising that many aspects of this important part of Christian life cannot easily be understood by young children we nevertheless hope to lay foundations for a later understanding and practice of prayer by: a) b) c) d) e)

allowing periods of silence during our worship. saying simple “thank you” prayers encouraging children to write their own prayers use of planned and unplanned prayer where relevant introducing and teaching some of the great prayers of the Christian faith.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from our daily worship and religious education lessons. However, the Governors expect parents, having chosen a church school, to fully support their child’s inclusion in both religious education and worship in school.

Other aspects Sex and Relationship Education Set within the context of human relationships and focusing on family life as is explicit in the attitudes and values of Christ’s teaching we aim to incorporate “Sex and relationship Education” in our wider Personal and Social Education Policy. Parental permission is sought where professional information is shared in a sensitive and appropriate way by, for instance, the school nurse [usually in Year 6]. Special Educational Needs or Disability [SEND] The school’s SEND policy operates within the legal framework outlined in the SEND Code of Practice. The school aims for all children to have maximum access to all aspects of the curriculum, by developing each child’s physical, intellectual and emotional competence to achieve their full potential. To achieve this we work in close partnership with parents, and other agencies. If a parent has a concern we ask that this is initially discussed with the class teacher.

Extra Curricular Activities The school offers a variety of extra curricular activities throughout the year including art, choir, ICT, sport, games and chess. Visits to other schools and trips to support the delivery of the curriculum are also organised throughout the year. Media - Photographes/images We take many photographs of the children for many reasons: assessment, recording progress or achievement, participation in events, fun days and theme days. We also use a secure web based programme that records a timeline of events for children and groups which parents, through password access, can see. Unless you write to inform us we will assume that you accept our professional judgement on the use of media.

Complaints Procedure. If at any time you have a concern or enquiry, please do not hesitate to let us know. Any matter relating to the curriculum or organisation of the school should be discussed, in the first instance, with the Head teacher. Healthy school - healthy people The school values, supports and encourages a healthy lifestyle and we do this in a number of ways, for example, promoting healthy eating, drinking, and developing life skills. We also organise a range of free training courses throughout the year for parents. Nurse The school nurse is available to discuss things that you feel are confidential. The nurse can be contacted at Hindley Clinic. Toast/Snack The option for your child to have a toast snack is available to all children from Year 1 to Year 6 at only 10p per day. Toast money is payable at the start of each half term, for the half term. Snack is available for Early Years children as part of the continuous provision. The children have access to different healthy snacks each day. Fruit Fruit is given free of charge to every child in Year 1 and Year 2 every day, just before the afternoon playtime or after school. Water Water bottles are provided free of charge for all children so that they can have access to clean, fresh water throughout the day. Big Breakfast Breakfast is provided, free of charge, for all children from Year 1 to Year 6 every day between 8.50 and 9.10am.

Kidz Club Kidz Club is an Ofsted registered limited company that forms part of All Saints Community package to support our families. It is a very successful before and after school club which runs from 7.50am to 6pm every day in the Oasis Centre. Children have a good selection of food, drink and activities, including computer games, DVD and TV to keep them safe and occupied. Full details are available on our web site.

Admissions and Organisation Organisation The school is organised into 3 phases. Phase 1 Foundation Stage, incorporating Nursery and Reception. Phase 2 This includes Year 1 and Year 2 [Key Stage 1, infant year groups] Phase 3 This includes Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. [Key Stage 2, junior year groups] STANDARD ADMISSION NUMBER: 30 Admission Criteria for both nursery and school. [Please note that if your child is in nursery you need to make an application for a place in school as any other parent would do] Admission criteria for school and nursery. Admission number: 30 1. Looked after children. 2. Children who will have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of admission. A brother or sister is any child living at the same address. 3. Children of parents who attend All Saints’ Church or St Philip’s Mission, for 12 or more times up to the time of application. 4. Children of parents who attend a church which is a member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland for 12 or more times up to the time of application. 5. Baptized children, of a church which is a member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, whose parents wish them to attend a church school. 6. Children living closest to school measured in a straight line as determined by the LEA ***Please remember, if you want to submit supporting evidence when requesting a school place it is parents responsibility to ensure school receives a copy, even if an application has been made ‘on line’.*** Looked after children ‘Looked after children’ includes any child in ‘Public Care’ Previously looked after children are children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order). Applications for previously looked after children must be supported with appropriate evidence i.e. a copy of the adoption order, residence order or special guardianship order.’ Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs or Education Health and Care Plan which named the school would be admitted first before applying the oversubscription criteria Regular worship

The Governing Body deem a regular worshipper as someone who has attended their church or place of worship for a minimum of once a month, for at least the twelve months prior to the closing date of applications. Evidence of regular attendance at your place of worship must be presented in writing from the Minister or leader of the place concerned and must be given to the school. Siblings When considering a brother or sister we will include:  half-brothers and half-sisters  stepbrothers and stepsisters  foster brothers and foster sisters who live at the same address as part of the same family unit. Baptism Baptism certificates will need to be seen by school. Tie-breaker If more children fall into any one category than the number of places left, the Governors will offer places to the children who live nearest to the school. Distance will be measured in a straight line from the child’s home address to the front entrance door of the school, using Wigan Council’s measuring system. In cases where there are two or more children with the same distance measurement (for example if more than one child lives in a block of flats), where to admit another child would breach the infant class size regulations, a system will be used to randomly pick who will be offered a place. Please contact the school if you would like more information about this. Childs Home address. You must give the child's correct current home address. This is where the child and parent, or carer with parental responsibility, normally live. If parents are separated and the child spends time at each parent’s address, the address we use for admission to school is that of the main carer. This is usually the address of the parent or carer who gets child benefit for the child. Late Applications Late applications [those received after the closing date] will only be considered after those received by the closing date. Waiting list Places may become available at school after the offer date. To decide which children have these places, we will:  put all children who we refused a place at one of their preferences on the waiting list for the school;  keep the list in priority order, decided by the oversubscription criteria for the school only;  offer places that become available to the next child on the waiting list; and  keep the waiting list until the end of the autumn term. Important information about the waiting list: We cannot take into account the length of time a child’s name has been on the waiting list, only the admission criteria for the school. This means that your child’s position on the list may change if another parent asks to be put on the list and their child has higher priority in the admission criteria. Deferred entry

Parents can request that the date their child is admitted to the school is deferred until later in the school year or until the child reaches compulsory school age in that school year. Where entry is deferred, the place will be held open and not offered to another child. Parents cannot defer entry beyond the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday, nor beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted. Part-time attendance Parents can request that their child attends part-time until the child reaches compulsory school age. Nursery Classes The admission criteria for school is different than those for nursery. Attendance at the nursery does not guarantee admission to the school. Parents must submit an application for a place in Reception class by the closing date.

Twins etc Where there are twins, triplets wanting admissions and there is only a single place left within the admission number, then the governing body will exercise as much flexibility as possible with the requirements of infant class sizes. In exceptional circumstances we are now able to offer places for both twins and all triplets, even when this means breaching infant class size limits. This may also apply to siblings in the same year group. Admission of children outside their normal age group Parents may seek a place for their child outside of their normal age group, for example, to a higher year group if the child is gifted and talented or to a lower year group if the child has experienced problems such as ill health. The parents of a summer born child (born between 1 April and 30 August) may choose not to send their child to school until the September following their fifth birthday and may request that they are admitted out of their normal age group – to reception rather than year 1. A decision is made on the basis of the circumstances of each case. The process is as follows: Stage 1 – request Parents make a formal request to the School in writing with any supporting evidence they wish to be considered.  A request for delayed entry to reception class should be made at the same time as applying for a place for normal entry (i.e. by the closing date of 15 January) in order to give sufficient time for the case to be considered prior to the offer of school places on 16 April.  A request for in year admission outside of the normal age group should be made on the normal in year transfer form. We do not accept requests for early entry to reception class for children who will not be of statutory school age. Stage 2 – decision Requests will be considered by the School. We will look at the following factors but these are not exhaustive:  Parent’s views  The needs of the child and the possible impact on them of being educated out of year group  The child’s medical history and views of medical professionals if appropriate

 

In the case of children born prematurely the fact that they may have naturally fallen into the lower age group if they had been born on their expected date of birth Whether delayed academic, social, emotional or physical development is adversely affecting their readiness for school;

Stage 3 – outcome Parents are notified of the decision in writing by the School Organisation Team. Request agreed: If the request is agreed the application will be considered for the year group requested and ranked alongside any other applications. There is no guarantee that a place will be offered at the preferred school. Parents have a statutory right to appeal against the refusal of a place at a school for which they have applied. This right does not apply if they are offered a place at the school but it is not in their preferred age group. Where a child has been educated out of their normal age group, the parent may again request admission out of the normal age group when they transfer to secondary school. It will be for the admission authority of that school to decide whether to admit the child out of their normal age group. Request refused: There is no statutory right of appeal against the refusal of a request for admission outside the normal age group. However, if the parents are dissatisfied they have the right to complain through the Council’s complaints procedure for decisions made by the local authority or under the school’s complaints procedure where the decision has been made by the school.

Other information Play equipment. We have a range of large climbing equipment for the children to use at playtimes including a climbing wall and climbing frames. Children use these on a regular basis and have free access to them during playtime. If you have any worries about your child using this equipment, please speak to the Headteacher about your concerns. Charges for School Activities Every activity and trip that the school organizes is supplemented by school funds so that parents do not have to find the full cost. Whilst the Governors and Headteacher will at all times try, in good faith, to observe the law, voluntary contributions will be sought to support activities which, whilst valuable educationally, could not be supported wholly from school funds. It has always been practice in All Saints’ CE Primary School to deal sensitively and compassionately with those in genuine financial difficulty so that no child should be disadvantaged. We shall continue to use discretion with regard to remission of charges, having regard to individual circumstances. However, should voluntary funds not be sufficient, activities may have to be cancelled. Fund Raising Throughout the year children are encouraged to raise funds both for school and charitable purposes. School Security. For security reasons there is no access through external doors after the start of the school day, except through the main front door. If children arrive after 8.50am, they should go to the front, main entrance.

Friends of Hindley All Saints School The Friends of Hindley All Saints School was started in June 2012 and is a registered charity [Number 1147763] set up for the sole purpose to ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF PUPILS IN THE SCHOOL IN PARTICULAR BY: 1) DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE STAFF PARENTS AND OTHERS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SCHOOL;

2) ENGAGING IN ACTIVITIES OR PROVIDING FACILITIES OR EQUIPMENT WHICH SUPPORT THE SCHOOL AND ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUPILS. The charity organises a number of events throughout the year for children and their carers in order to bring the community together and to raise funds. All parent and carers of children that attend school are ‘members’ of the Friends Association. As such it is hoped that you will support the many activities and events that they organise.
