Inclusion in the Outdoors: Why it Matters and How to Make it Happen In March of 2016, Secretary Jewell issued an order to increase access to public lands for "disadvantaged and underresourced youth." In a time when cross-cultural conflict is a constant topic in the media, in the workplace, and in communities, it is time to consider the unique role that parks and other public land agencies have in building inclusiveness and positive collaboration across class and race barriers. This interactive workshop will explore the whys and how’s when it comes to engaging diverse communities in the outdoors through a case study of cityWILD, an organization that has been working to increase access to the outdoors for diverse youth for over 18 years. Jes Ward, cityWILD Grand Room at the Hampton Inn The Making of a Great Western Slope Community Recreation Center Montrose is nearing completion on the brand new Montrose Community Recreation Center (MCRC), the largest and newest on the western slope. Every square foot of the 82,000 square foot building is designed to maximize participation, provide building longevity and ensure operational efficiency. The end result will make a significant positive impact on the quality of life in Montrose. Community leaders tried for over two decades to earn enough support to fund and build the Recreation Center, with the first vote only earning 25% support. Success was finally achieved when a sales tax increase was approved by voters in 2014. Following design and over a year of construction thus far, the Montrose Community Recreation Center is scheduled to be complete by mid-November 2016. This session will appeal to all parks and recreation professionals: every team member from the Montrose Recreation District was involved in this process, from the board of directors, to programmers, foundation members, engaged citizens, managers and maintenance. Come join this dynamic session and learn about several decades of effort and the final product. Ken Sherbenou, Montrose Recreation District Chuck Musgrave, Barker Rinker Seacat Dominguez/Plateau Room Converting Kentucky Bluegrass to Native Grass in City Parks: Where, Why, and How As a result of severe budget constraints that impacted the health of the cities parks, the Colorado Springs Parks Department developed a strategy for reducing the amount of irrigated Kentucky bluegrass to help maintain a healthier and more sustainable parks system. The strategy is a process of converting underutilized, high maintenance Kentucky bluegrass, to native grass in order to achieve significant water savings and reduce the overall water footprint of the department. The results from converting nearly 80 acres have been dramatic and proven to be very cost effective while providing an attractive landscape. Learn which areas to convert, how much water you can save, and step-by-step details of how to make the conversion a success! T.E.A.M. Together.Everyone.Always.Mastery. This session will dig deeper into how to better shape ourselves and our agencies. There are times when working alone is great, there are other times when we are called to be a team. How can we help ourselves and our agencies always be ready with the tools needed to work together. How can we make sure we understand team work so we can teach it in our programs. This session will focus both on internally team building with staff and agencies peers as well as teaching ways to incorporate team building skills into our recreation programs. We will do activities that you can do with your staff and peers to help create a better, stronger working relationships. This session will also work on how to put more team work into our day to day programs! Have you ever yelled, "I want to see some team work out there!" to a group of 8 year olds....they most likely do not even know what that means. This session will give you ways to incorporate team building games into traditional sports practices. Jill Schladweiler, Estes Valley Recreation & Park District Escalante/Adobe Room Who is Your Audience? Before you answer, it is not, Everyone! While this may seem like the obvious answer as agencies that provide services to demographically diverse communities, it is impractical to think that an agency can speak directly to an entire community through their channels of communication like a brochure, online media, flyers, or advertisements. The end result of this type of the strategy of indirectly communicating with everyone, is that you won’ t communicate with anyone. This session will identify ways that an agency can segment their market and identify ways in which participants can enhance their organization’s marketing efforts. Topics discussed will include target markets and market segments, and channel and content development. Dylan Packebush, GreenPlay, LLC Becky Dunlap, City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Dominguez/Plateau Room The Eaton Secret Many Colorado communities have seen an increase in recreation programming in recent years. In addition to this increase in demand, trends toward greater participation in physical activity for all demographics are adding to park and facility usage. Forward-thinking community leaders also associate recreation centers with higher property values, economic development, and overall quality of life. As a parks and recreation department in a community, focused on enriching the quality of life for present and future generations, where do you learn about the process of planning, designing and building one of the most complex building types- a recreation center? This session takes an in-depth look at the story behind the Town of Eaton's recently successful efforts to bring a new recreation center to their community by passing a ballot measure on the first try. Discover the tools and techniques this town's newly formed Parks and Recreation District utilized to realize success and gain a further understanding for what might work in your own community. Breakthrough Session - 1:15pm-2:30pm & 2:45pm-4:00pm *must attend the entire session to earn CEUs. ABC's of Implementing Asset Management in the P&R Agency The facilities portfolio is typically the most valuable asset that public park and recreation organizations manage and often are considered critical to the execution of the organization's mission. Yet funding is often lacking to adequatly maintain existing facilities or to build new parks. Seldome is consideration given to the total life cycle cost of operations for new facilities. Updating facilities management practices to reflect sustainability and asset management principles for these facilities requires the application of complex, interconnected, and comprehensive facility management practices to the asset portfolio. This session will provide the ABC's required to achieve success in developing an asset management approach, including how to establish an Asset Management System that answeres the five foundational elements; Determine the total cost of ownership for the asset portfolio over the full life cycle of the asset; Develop systems and staff knowledge to support agency implementation of life cycle management and Develop a capital investment strategy for the agency that focuses on the organization's mission and is financially sustainable. On average in the United States, 9 children drown each day. Building Alternatives for Indoor Sports Facilities For many years, full-service indoor recreation centers were the standard for most Colorado communities. Today, many communities are broadening their recreation offerings to include indoor sport and training spaces. Whether they serve youth and adult leagues, camps, clinics, summer camps or a wide variety of other uses, indoor fieldhouses become the multi-use workhorses that recreation departments dream about. Communities and their designers are getting creative in the ways that new facilities are being developed to meet the needs of sports that are traditionally offered outdoors, but over a year-round cycle. Many of these projects are the result of public/private partnerships for funding and operation. Because these buildings can be so large, and costly, designers need to investigate alternative solutions to enclosing so much area. Pre-engineered systems are typically more economical and quicker to construct than traditional systems, but have a stigma of not being as aesthetically pleasing and as durable. Pre-engineering building options have come a long way from that of the old metal storage building. The new systems are often difficult to identify as metal buildings, and when combined with traditional building systems can create an interesting and architecturally pleasing overall project. Karen Wenzel, Metropolitan State University of Denver Jane Broida, Metropolitan State University of Denver Marcia Carter, Western Illinois University Grand Room at the Hampton Inn Swimming Pool Technologies: Are These the Answer? Over the past several decades the aquatic industry has seen many new products come and go. It is often hard to decide which products have real value and are here to stay when all you hear is a sales pitch. This presentation will take a non-biased look at swimming pool products and equipment in the industry today. Kevin Post, Counsilman-Hunsaker Kannah Creek Room Discovering Dreams and Purpose Managing and motivating people is an evolving challenge. Author Matthew Kelly, of “The Dream Manager” suggests that the key to motivation isn’t always a bigger paycheck, but rather the fulfillment of crucial personal dreams. People at every level need to be offered encouragement. At different points in our life journey, we get caught up in surviving versus thriving. When we are merely surviving, we stop dreaming, stop thriving and begin to disengage and grow dissatisfied from our work, relationships and life itself. A holistic approach to worksite wellness encompasses our physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual welfare in all LifeDomains. There is a connection between the dreams we are chasing personally and the way we engage at work. Organizations can create a dynamic collaboration by working to achieve organizational objectives and employee’s personal dreams. Claudine Norden, Ascent LifePlanning, LLC Whitewater Creek Room

Closing Keynote Session - 9:00am-11:30am Sole Purpose: The Shoes that Changed the World The Story of Samaritan's Feet You don’t want to miss this General Session! There will be something for everyone. From discovering the power of your “WHY”, to sharing the ideals of “Servant Leadership”, to developing “Collaborative Strategies” that builds deep and thoughtful connections within our communities. Manny will share his inspiring story of how a shoeless boy from West Africa overcame the stigma of poverty to create one of largest global footwear humanitarian NGO’s in the world (Non-Governmental Organizations) trying to Create A World With Zero Shoeless Children. At the age of nine, he received his first pair of shoes at a park from a "Good Samaritan" in Lagos, Nigeria. Those shoes became a symbol of hope and a catalyst to Manny’s love for basketball. He earned a scholarship to play in the US and then began a career in the technology industry. But Manny never forgot the children of his homeland or the "Good Samaritan" that encouraged him to believe in his dreams. In 2003, Manny and his wife, Tracie, founded Samaritan’s Feet International, a 501(c)(3) organization, with the purpose of sharing hope with those in need by washing their feet, giving them a new pair of shoes, and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. To date, millions have been impacted because of Manny’s vision, with almost 7 million pairs of shoes already distributed to needy children in over 340 U.S. cities and 75 countries around the world. From being shoeless in Africa, to becoming a manufacturer of shoes and one of the world’s greatest inspirations and servant leaders…Manny’s presentation will awaken the “Dream” and “Giant” within you. Get ready for an uplifting in attitude and inspiration for developing a roadmap to catalyze “Social Change” with your platform where ever you are. Manny is proof that shoes can be a tangible gift of hope and life changing. His story will leave you breathless with a tangible reminder that “The greatest tragedy in life isn’t death, but a life lived without purpose.” Emmanuel “Manny” Ohonme Gunnison River Room
