Meetings

Ski Season 2015-2016

*** January 14 ***

7-9 PM (monthly Thursday evening meeting)

February 18

PLAINVIEW-OLD BETHPAGE PUBLIC LIBRARY 999 Old Country Road, Plainview, NY 11803 (about a quarter mile east of RT. 135)

March 17

Refreshments & socializing begin at 7 PM. Meeting starts promptly at 7:30 PM. ALL WELCOME!

Editor’s Corner Happy New Year Everyone. The holiday shopping is over. However with the warm temperatures we had in December it was probably difficult to think about snow and skiing. January starts a new year, a new skiing Season and with this newsletter a new editor. I’d like to thank Annemarie for her many years of dedication as editor. As the new editor I’d like to encourage everyone to use the social technology on the club’s web site, Yahoo Group, and Facebook page to meet and ski in their areas when local snow is available. If you’re not familiar with these features, detailed examples are on the following pages. In continuing to provide cross country skiing and club related news I’ve added two new features. First will be ‘highlights from the last meeting’, and second, as this is your newsletter, a page called ‘members on the trail’ where members may share their ski experiences, pictures, trips and tips with other members. I’m Looking forward to your contributions. Email me at [email protected]. Also up to date trail and snow conditions for each trip can be found on their web sites which are included in the detailed descriptions. Come to this month’s meeting Thursday Jan 14th where Kim will share how to Kick and Glide with the Nordic stride. See you on the Trail Ken

Highlights from the Dec 10 Meeting John Bennett welcomed all the new members. Kim Schultz gave a brief review of the season’s trips, registration status, and changes. She showed a video on the “how to’s” of buying your first set of Nordic skis. Kim followed with a demo of the different types of skis and their respective merits: waxless skis or fish scales require no work – just put them on and go; waxable skis perform much more efficiently but requires frequent waxing depending upon snow conditions. A wider and shorter ski will provide greater control but speed tends to be slower compared to a narrow longer ski. Poles with touring baskets will perform better in deep snow and are commonly used. Getting professionally fitted for skis will involve factors of weight, height, experience, and skill level. Selecting well fitted and comfortable boots are critical as you will spend long hours in them. Touring ski boots are generally flexible allowing for freeing the heel while skiing compared to rigid downhill boots which are attached at the heel. Clothing – NEVER WEAR COTTON! XC skiing creates a great deal of heat (it’s an aerobic activity) cotton becomes wet from your perspiration as you ski and sits against the skin, wet and cold. Instead breathable synthetics or wool wicks the perspirations away from your skin. Dress in Layers – a thin insulating and wicking base layer against the skin, a mid-layer of fleece or wool, and a windproof outer layer (with or without insulation depending on temperatures).

Propulsion/ kick and gliding – your technique determines the amount of power that gets you going combined with the configuration of your skis determines your glide. Thank you Kim for the informative presentation and Happy equipment shopping everyone.

Posting To The Club Forum and Sending Email to all Ski Club Members The ski club has a great tool which makes it easy to communicate an email message to everyone in the XC ski club. We have a yahoo forum called LIXCSKICLUBFORUM and most people in the club join this forum when they became members. To use this forum to send messages to everyone in the club is very simple. Create your email in your email program (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook, etc.) with the message you want to send out and enter the club forum address [email protected] in the TO: location of your email. See example below. Your email will be sent to everyone who had joined the XC ski club yahoo forum. If someone replies to you, it should just go to you – not everyone in the club.

When you receive a message from the XC Ski Club Forum, it will show as FROM: [email protected]; on behalf of; . Also, [lixcskiclubforum] will show in the subject line followed by the message subject. If you are a member but are not receiving email messages from [email protected], please contact Kim Schultze by phone at 631-897-1001 or email [email protected].

Did You Know Our Club Has a Facebook Page?

by Kim Schultze

I want to make sure everyone knows that the LI XC Ski Club has a Facebook Page. Many people go there to post questions and update photos. For example, I posted all the Silver Star photos there from our recent club trip. To access the club Facebook page you will need a personal Facebook account. To get to the club’s Facebook page either type the following link on any web browser: https://www.facebook.com/ pages/Long-Island-Cross-Country-Ski-Club/54512976329, or log onto Facebook and type “Long Island Cross Country Ski Club” in the search box on the top of Facebook. Once you are on the club’s Facebook page click on the “LIKE” button and you will get updates from this Facebook page on your Facebook home page - similar to the way you get notified every time someone posts on the Yahoo forum.

One difference is you do not have to be a club member to “LIKE” our Facebook page. You can post questions on the Facebook page to ask if anyone is doing any local skiing – the same way you can on the club forum. However, instead of doing it with an email you have to be a member of Facebook and do it with a “POST” on our Facebook page. Anyone who has “LIKEed” the club’s page will see all the posts on their Facebook home page automatically. Take a look – it is very nice! Also, do not forget to visit our club website: www.LICCSC.org. We have a new look thanks to our webmaster Glenn Abelson.
