Web Registration at Missouri State University Planning, design, installation, and support of a custom web registration system

Overview  Planning for a complete application  Design and development  Applications for faculty and staff  Applications for students  Implementation

 Usage statistics  Contact and demo information

Planning a complete application  Many supporting features added prior to core

registration application  Core registration application designed with input from campus community, including deans, several faculty members, the registrar, and student representatives  Committee met each month for two years, resulting in 28 modules to support the entire application

Design considerations  All components designed to enhance and

integrate into existing systems, not replace them.  Two web-based core components—course permissions and concurrent enrollment— were enhancements to both web reg and inperson registration systems.  On-line contracts system designed to be reusable (e.g., freshman housing contracts).

Development  Core web registration components written by

four people in 14 weeks, including the time of 1.5 Systems Analysts and 2.5 Programmer / Analysts, using a mature web development infrastructure.  All web systems run from an IIS environment using mainly ASP, HTML, and JavaScript. Database access is primarily iSeries DB2 with some SQL Server. All are ADA compliant.

Applications – Faculty / Staff  Advising notes  Advisement folder  Update departmental close levels for sections  Prerequisite checking and reporting  Course permission management

 Concurrent enrollment rules  Advisee rosters  Class rosters

Applications – Students  Student menu  Find a class  Course permission requests  Electronic contract system  Add / drop classes

 Concurrent enrollment enforcement

Implementation  Web registration was delivered on-time and

enjoyed a 98% approval rating from students who used the system. “I used the system at (another major university) and this one was much less complicated. The (other system) required several downloads and used menus which were confusing to use. This system was very easy to use and not complicated at all. Excellent job.” “The system worked great! It was easy to follow and made it easy to fix my schedule if there were conflicts.” “I really liked registering online, because I live over an hour away. Thanks :)” “I think this was the best idea ever! It was so easy and fast! Thanks for doing it!”

Spring 2005 usage  As of February 1, 2005, 17,874 students were

enrolled for the spring 2005 semester. Of those 1,982 were not eligible to use web registration:   

1,436 precollege 191 first-time freshmen 355 athletes

 Therefore, 15,892 students were eligible to use web

registration. Of those:  

8,518 (54%) processed their initial registration on the web 7,374 (46%) processed their initial registration in person

Change of schedule  Spring 2005 

Total Transactions: 18,820 

Web: 9,802 In Person: 9,018

 Spring 2004  

Total Transactions: 13,645 (all done in person) This is nearly a 40% increase in total number of change of schedules and nearly a 34% decrease of transactions completed in person from SP04-SP05.
