Walking in the Port Hills The Port Hills are among the most-loved landscapes of Christchurch, with their soft signature skyline providing a scenic backdrop for the city. Walking in the Port Hills is a popular recreation activity with a range of tracks providing panoramic views.
Safety
Fires
Earthquake damage has meant many tracks and reserves remain closed due to rockfall hazard including sections of the Summit Road.
Fires are a particular hazard during the summer months. Please report any fires seen by immediately phoning the emergency services. Dial 111.
Walkers are advised to stick to open tracks – remaining well clear of the tops and bottoms of coastal cliffs, bluffs and rocky outcrops. Winter conditions may increase ground moisture which can mean more slumping and an increased likelihood of slips and slope instabilities.
Dogs
Signage is in place on open tracks and care should be observed in these areas as hazards are not always immediately obvious. Hazard indicators include signs of rocks having moved, cracking and slumping of the ground and rock debris at the he base of cliffs. Please obey any closure signs. Areas are closed due to significant rock fall risk and the fact that rocks are being rolled and blown up by contractors.
All dogs on the Port Hills reserves should be kept on a leash where permitted. There is a dog exercise area at Victoria Park where dogs can be exercised off the leash and doggy-do bins are provided.
Maps & Track Updates Port Hills tracks are regularly monitored by Park Rangers who update their status online. To check tracks and download maps please visit:
