ABOUT EASTLAND, TAIRaWHITI - OUT EAST

‘Out East’ the eastern extremity of Te Ika a Mãui North Island, Aotearoa, NZ. New Zealand, paradise found. The region is known as Eastland or the East Coast and has at its heart the City of Gisborne, the southern gateway of Wairoa and the northern gateway of Opotiki.

Whichever is your preference, you are correct - it’s all Out East. Ironically, one of the first places of NZ discovery for Maori and European explorers, Out East remains largely undiscovered by the masses. Out East is a place where the past, present and future all meld into one. New Zealand was born here and ‘heartland’ New Zealand still exists here, still safely nestled amongst our nooks and crannies. It’s a lifestyle safeguarded by our communities. Give yourself a little time to scratch beneath the surface out here to reveal ‘pure New Zealand’. Out East, a place of freedom, discovery, adventure and fun, still the first place to see the sun. 3

OPOTIKI - OUT EAST OPOTIKI, NORTHERN GATEWAY TO THE EAST COAST. Opotiki is between the mountains and the sea with the spectacular Waioeka Gorge to the south and some of the most spectacular coastline Out East along miles of brilliant beaches. Discover Motu Trails, one of the gems of the New Zealand Cycle Trails with the family oriented Dunes trail to the adventurous Motu Trail. Trace the steps of Maori and early settlers on the Motu Road trail, experience the natural beauty of the Pakihi Track and stunning Pacific Ocean vistas on the Dunes Trail. Opotiki isn’t all about cycling, there is also fantastic fishing and bush walks or simply relax and enjoy yourself on the beach Opotiki By Nature.

Stay a night or three at one of the great camping grounds / holiday parks / motels / backpackers or beach stays and experience some coastal hospitality. 8. Go to the edge of the earth! The East Cape lighthouse is the most easterly in the world. Spectacular scenery. 9. Get the best view of the new day, climb Mt Hikurangi. 10. GISBORNE - OUT EAST

IT ALL COMES TOGETHER IN GISBORNE - OUT EAST. Gisborne (Tairawhiti) is truly the birthplace of New Zealand. It is where the two races Pakeha (European) and Maori first met. Captain Cook landed at Gisborne and the hills opposite Gisborne city are known as Young Nicks Head , Te Kuri o Paoa – the first land in New Zealand to be spotted by one of Cooks crew.

GISBORNE - OUT EAST

Wainui Hack - Barry Barker

Gisborne has world class surf beaches, quality vineyards, magnificent trees and wild rivers that meander towards quiet secluded coastline. The city is renowned for its beaches and once you’ve had your fill of sun, surf and sand you can make your way inland through the vineyards of the spectacular Poverty Bay Flats to visit the National Arboretum at Eastwoodhill, Rere Waterfall and Rockslide. The more adventurous can boogie board down the Rere Rockslide, a naturally formed rockslide with a river running over flat rock to the pool below, sliding at high speed down 60 metres of rock. The Rere Rockslide is a wild ride made smooth by a coating of constantly running water. Most age groups could give this rock slide a go, you can go down bare, or hire an inflatable boogie board and wetsuit from the Gisborne i-SITE. Gisborne is the third largest wine region in New Zealand with incredible Chardonnay, Gisborne also produces a wide range of other exceptional wines varieties - Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Merlot and a raft of other varieties. Gisborne wines are renowned the world over for their distinctive, intense fruit flavours and easy drinking style.

Papakorito Falls - Andy Belcher

Visit two of the Out East jewels. Each offers a completely different experience from the other. Waikaremoana, a land-locked fresh water lake, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, native forests, walks, waterfalls, tranquility, lakes-in-islands-in-lakes, trout and more. It’s an inland nature lover’s dream. It also offers one of the nine great walks of New Zealand. Mahia is a unique peninsula joined to the mainland by a sandy isthmus. Saltwater, beaches, surf, crayfish, rugged hills, pasture and fishing. It’s a coastal beach lover’s dream. For a less travelled path head to Gisborne via the Tiniroto Road. Stop off and see Te Reinga Falls, Tiniroto Lakes or Donneraille Park. (Allow an extra 15 minutes driving time.) If you desire to see more of the beautiful landscape that the district has to offer, go for a scenic drive and explore the nature along Tiniroto road, Ruakaturi Valley Road and Ohuka Road or along Hereheretau Road and Mangapoike Road and refresh yourself in one of the swimming holes in the Makaretu Stream. Have a soak in the hot pools at Morere and check out the impressive Nikau forest walk.

Beachriders at Mahia - Rebecca Williams

Wairoa in Maori means ‘Long Water’ and its rich culture and heritage are displayed against a backdrop of natural beauty that rivals any in New Zealand. Inland from Wairoa is Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera. Te Urewera extends over some 225,000ha and is the largest untouched native forest area remaining in the North Island. It is home to Lake Waikaremoana, one of the Great Walks of New Zealand. Few places in New Zealand have such a wide botanical variation as is found in Te Urewera. It ranges from luxuriant kohekohe forest in the lowland to mountain beech on the mountain tops. Birdlife, although not obvious at first, is plentiful and up to thirty-five fully protected native species may be seen or heard. Trout fishing on the lake is superb and one of the favourite ‘must do’ locations for those seeking rainbow and brown trout. A large number of superbly carved Marae dot the landscape, sending out a message to visitors that a living culture resides here in a region that is proving itself as the ultimate tourist and lifestyle destination.

MARAE - OUT EAST

Takipu Marae - Barry Barker

THERE ARE OVER 150 MARAE OUT EAST! Many are ornately carved and meticulously cared for. They are true taonga treasures of our region. Marae are the meeting place that belong to the local Maori. They are a place where people gather to korero talk, celebrate, tangi mourn and share knowledge. Marae are the focal point in the community and a source of pride and strength for the tangata whenua people of the land. Each marae represents tipuna the ancestors of the tribe and has very special significance. Not all manuhiri visitors will have the good fortune to experience a full powhiri traditional welcome on to the marae. If you are driving by and wish to explore further, it is vital that the permission of the people of the marae is granted before visiting. Contact details for the many marae in the region can be found at the excellent maorimaps.com. There are specific rules and guidelines to follow while on a marae. These have been set to show respect to the creator, tribal ancestors, people of the marae and tikanga things maori. These include:

• The wharenui meeting house and foreground are sacred areas and must be treated with respect. • Alcohol must not be taken on the marae. • Remove shoes before entering the meeting house. • No food or drink to be taken into the meeting house. • Be respectful if someone is speaking. • Do not run inside the meeting house. • Do not sit on tables or benches. • You must check with your hosts before taking photos. • When in doubt ask a local. Show respect, get respect - Out East! 47
