PROGRAMS Marilyn Pond February 11, 2010 Quilters by the Sea will host quilt designer Melinda Bula. Her lecture will be Discover the Artist Within Through Quilts and Wearable Art. Melinda is known for her Fabulous Fusible Flowers quilts. With the wonderful look of a painting, she uses fabric and thread to create beautifully artistic quilts. Creating and designing is an obsession with Melinda and whether it is fabric, wallpaper or quilts, it is her passion. Melinda Bula lives in El Dorado Hills, California and has been sewing since she was a young girl. Melinda has been in love with fabric all of her life and knew when she was 16 years old that she was going to be an artist, which became her major in college. Soon she was off to Hawaii as a flight attendant, a real job that lasted 8 years, and met her husband during this time in the San Francisco Bay Area. She worked in the interior design field for 15 years as a fabric and wallpaper designer. For more information on Melinda, visit her web site at www.melindabula.com UPCOMING PROGRAMS Date

NEW PROGRAM FOR MARCH, 2010

We are happy to announce that we have booked Billie Lauder for our March Lecture and Workshop. Billie comes with over 30 years of teaching experience and will be sharing her Trunk Show with us March 11, 2010. Billie was on Simply Quilts 17 times and is most famous for her Quick Tricks. She will also be doing a workshop on Saturday, March 13, 2010 titled Pushing the Four Patch. There will be a pattern requirement of $5.00 per student. Kasey Egelus and Alice Roberts will be happy to help you secure your spot for the workshop.

Yearly Membership Dues, $25.00, came due January 1, 2010. To be included in the 2010 Directory of Members, dues will need to be paid by the February 2010 meeting. Avoid the rush - mail in or pay at the next meeting.

PLEASE GET DUES TO US BY END OF THE FEBRUARY 2010 MEETING. See your November, 2009 newsletter for a member application form to submit with your dues. www.QuiltersByTheSea.com

Workshop Corner Kasey Egelus and Alice Roberts Our own Quilter's By The Sea member, SANDY SZLADEK taught our January 16th workshop. Thank you Sandy for a fun workshop day. Sandy brought in 4 examples of Twist and Turns quilts. The variations in her quilts inspired each workshop attendee to come up with their own fabulous quilt. We oohed and awed over everyone’s fabrics selections, some just purchased at “Road”, some from our “Stash”. We had flowers in purples, lavender, blues and white, apples, kittens, a zoo of animals plus the cutest frogs you have ever seen. All these fabrics turned into wonderful Twist and Turns quilts. Sandy offered many wonderful tips and hands on techniques. QBS workshop attendees ranged from the experienced workshop attendee to “newbie’s”. Everyone's participation and help in set up and tear down was so appreciated by your workshop co-chairs. We had a fabulous quilting day. Our next workshop adventure is February 13th, 2010.

Geranium with Melinda Bula Learn the basics for building a fusible flower quilt. The class works from the same flower pattern. You will learn the steps of developing a flower art quilt by how color works to make a flower look real, how to use the fusible and lay out of design. Melinda encourages creativity while assisting those who may feel timid about color and design. All skill levels can master these flowers and make them their own. The students in class will get 80% of their flower done in class. Renegade Thread Play is covered and demonstrated in class. Supply list at www.melindabula.com/geranium.htm or at the QBS Website. Workshop sign up with Alice Roberts, [email protected] or 714-381-8775, or Kasey Egelus, [email protected] or 562-404-3976. UPCOMING WORKSHOPS Date

Unless otherwise stated, fees are $30 for members and $40 for non-members. As many of our guild members have allergies, please do not wear perfume/cologne or bring anything scented, such as Mary Ellen’s Best Press, to the workshops. Your co-operation in making these gatherings a pleasure for all is much appreciated.

President’s Quilt 2009 I would like to thank everyone who contributed blocks to my 2009 President’s Quilt. The Barristers Block/Lawyers Puzzle quilt is lovely and I shall treasure it always as an expression of friendship from Quilters by the Sea. Many thanks to Connie Higgins for creating the quilt and to Sue Salinger for quilting it. I would especially like to thank Ann Liebovitz for the gorgeous cat appliqué which features fabric painting, thread painting and soft-edge appliqué.

President’s Corner Sonia Das Thank you all for a good transitional meeting in January. I look forward to 2010 being another good year for QBS! Please take note of the following items for the February meeting: Membership: • Please pay your dues of $25 by the February meeting. • New rosters will be available in March; those not paid will be dropped from the roster.

“I want to go home” - El Tigre

Programs/Workshops: • January saw an extensive and fun Show and Tell from the membership. • February has the famous quilter Melinda Bula, so please come early to get a seat to see her fabulous presentation. Intraguild: Get involved with any or all of the following activities and have nothing but fun all year long with QBS • Block of the Month pattern ($15 for the whole year) • Raffle baskets (tickets only 3 for $1) • Secret Pal program • Sew-So-Late (3X/month) at local quilt shops - a chance to sew, eat, and socialize with fellow quilters QBS 2009 Board: The completed board gift will be returned at the meeting. Vacant Positions Please consider helping out QBS by volunteering for the position below. Once filled, this will complete the Board allowing the Guild to run smoothly and efficiently. Parliamentarian • Makes sure we do things properly (according to the bylaws and standing rules) at general and board meetings • Chairs the Nominating Committee and helps find candidates to run for office • Conducts the election in September Without a Parliamentarian, either the present Board continues ad infinitum next year or the guild grinds to a halt so QBS really needs a volunteer or volunteers in this position. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at 562-429-4477 or [email protected]. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting! Saying “goodbye” and “thank you” to our outgoing 2009 QBS board members.

Saying “hello” to the 2010 Board and wishing them great success!

Thanks to everyone who donated quilts this month. Remember, when you pick up a kit you only have to do the part that you love, so if you really just want to piece the top, that’s great, just put everything back in the bag and bring it to the meeting. We have members that just “love” to quilt tops, others that really look forward to binding the quilts, and some members are happy sewing on the labels. It takes everyone to get the job done, so don’t stress out trying to do what you don’t love. For those of you who love to pick fabric and make kits, our monthly meeting at the Bunney Hutch is the place for you. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, February 14, the Sunday after the February guild meeting. Please come and help make kits, or sew on labels, or bring your sewing machine if you want to sew. We received several thank-you letters from the charities we gave the quilts and gifts to in December. I will have them on the table at the next meeting. Remember, we donated 245 quilts last year, and this would never have been possible without all of us working together.

The first SCCQG meeting of 2010 was held on January 10, at the North Cities Quilt Guild in Placentia. I brought back flyers for coming events for other guilds, which are available on the back table at each meeting. The meetings for the rest of the year are as follows: April 10 hosted by the Citrus Belt Quilters in Redlands and the topic will be Philanthropy and Community Service. The July 10 meeting will be hosted by the Surfside Guild in San Clemente and the topic will be Meet the Teachers. The October 9 meeting will be in Santa Barbara and the topics are Art Quilting and Websites. Everyone is welcome at these meetings, which are interesting and informative. Dawn Farrier, from the Creation Station in Buelton, was our speaker and her subject was Thinking Outside the Box. If you have met Dawn at a quilt show or at her shop, you will know what “outside the box” means to her. She spoke about a guild’s relationship with local quilt shops.

THE YEAR OF THE TIGER February 14, 2010 will mark the beginning of the Year of the Tiger per the Chinese Zodiac. This is a special year for El Tigre and many celebrations and Chinese banquets have been planned with his friends. However, El Tigre still remains missing SIX MONTHS after being cruelly snatched from the QBS Retreat in August 2009. What might have been a joke to his takers has misfired badly and many in this guild have been angered by the theft of personal property without purpose. It’s time for El Tigre to be returned; this “so-called joke” has gone on long enough. Since his takers want us to believe that he is still on vacation, tell him that the vacation is now over and he must come home NOW to his loving family and friends.

Library News Rose Aldape & Caroline Finnley Come by and visit your QBS Library, we have several new books. Workshop instructors, for example Karla Alexander, Rose Hughes, Norah McMeeking, and Judy Sisneros, have authored many of their books. Carol Doak was cancelled for March, but if you have an interest in her quilting techniques we have several of her books and a DVD. You may want to checkout Mariner’s Compass Stars. Fire and Ice Mariner’s Compass Stars Using just one block design from Carol Doak’s new book, Mariner's Compass Stars, you can begin to create accurate blocks that look complex. They are so easy to make with Carol’s tried and true paper piecing techniques. Learn how just a few blocks can make dramatic quilts. Different setting options for these dramatic blocks are discussed and creative quilting options shared. Achieve the drama of the Mariner's Compass with ease using methods that guarantee success. The Fire and Ice quilt finishes 46" x 46". Thank you for your donations, they really help the QBS budget
