AMERICAN EXPERIENCE explores The Murder of a President (February 2). This story looks into the history of James Garfield, one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president, and his assassination by a deluded madman named Charles Guiteau. The narrative follows Garfield’s unprecedented rise to power, his shooting only four months into his presidency, and its bizarre and heartbreaking aftermath. The two-hour film is based on Candice Millard’s bestselling and Edgar Award-winning book, Destiny of the Republic. The following Tuesday AMERICAN EXPERIENCE presents The Perfect Crime (February 9) which examines the shocking story of two wealthy college students who murder a 14-year-old boy in 1924 simply to prove they are smart enough to get away with it. Their trial sets off a national debate about morality and capital punishment. In the Leopold and Loeb trial, attorney Clarence Darrow achieves what many thought impossible. He saves the lives of two cold-blooded child-killers with the power of a speech.

SEASON 7

Begins Thursday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT Portwenn’s most irritable resident returns to public television. Over the past six seasons, DOC MARTIN has averaged nine million viewers a week in the UK. Martin Clunes, who plays the lovable yet grumpy medic, has won himself an army of die-hard fans. Calling themselves “Clunatics,” they lavish gifts on the cast and crew to emphasize how much they love the drama. Clunes, who recently spent a very contented four months shooting the latest series in Port Isaac, is touched — and a little taken aback — by the show’s global popularity. “When we started making DOC MARTIN, we could never have imagined it would have this reaction,” he says. “We never anticipated this. You can’t predict how successful something will be.” As the seventh season kicks off, Doc Martin is left devastated, realizing he must make some major changes if he is to win Louisa back. He enlists the help of his indomitable psychotherapist aunt, Ruth (Cranford star Dame Eileen Atkins), to try to convince Louisa to give their marriage one more chance. Caroline Catz (who plays Louisa) says viewers constantly stop her in the street to ask why Louisa stands for Doc Martin’s relentlessly crotchety behavior. “She puts up with him because she loves him,” says the actress. “He’s a really kind and considerate person who just finds it very difficult to express himself. You know he is good because you can see the way he is, and he has this great integrity. He is a real anti-hero, in a great way, and he has his own quirky charisma, which she loves.”

INDEPENDENT LENS offers five new documentaries from independent filmmakers in February. In No Más Bebés (February 1) a Chicana lawyer and a whistleblowing doctor file suit for a group of Mexican immigrant mothers who are sterilized after giving birth at a Los Angeles hospital in the 1960s and ’70s. The lawsuit contends the women, who had limited English skills, were coerced into having their fallopian tubes tied after delivery and that Roe v. Wade protects a woman’s right to have a child. A Ballerina’s Tale (February 8) follows the career of Misty Copeland, the first African-American female principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. Following a lead performance in 2013, Copeland reveals she has been performing in great pain. She discovers later she needs corrective surgery for shin fractures and may never dance again. The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (February 16) explores the tumultuous history of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s and their still relevant message that black lives matter. The film considers

how the Black Panthers inspire cultural and political awakening for black people, and what painful lessons are wrought when a revolutionary movement derails. (T)ERROR (February 22) places filmmakers in the middle of an FBI counter-terrorism sting operation. “Shariff” is a 63-year-old Black Panther turned informant, whose perspective provides glimpses into government counter-terrorism tactics and the sometimes murky justifications behind them. The film raises questions about the balance between civil liberties and national security. Wilhemina’s War (February 29) follows Wilhemina Dixon who struggles to meet the basic needs of her daughter and granddaughter who are living with AIDS. The documentary gives insight into what advocacy groups like the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council, families and those living with HIV deal with on a daily basis. An encore showing of The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights airs February 15.

Airs weekdays beginning February 15 at 7:30/6:30 a.m. and 4:00/3:00 p.m. MT/PT A new animated series that will help children learn astronomy and Earth science concepts airs weekdays beginning Monday, February 15, as part of our new Weekday Children’s Lineup (see our new schedule on page 5). READY JET GO! takes viewers ages 3-8 on a journey into outer space, building on children’s curiosity about science, technology and astronomy. The series follows two neighborhood kids: Sean, who has an all-consuming drive for science facts; and Sydney, who has a passion for science fiction. They befriend the new kid on their street, Jet Propulsion, whose family members happen to be aliens from the planet Bortron 7. Together, they explore the solar system and the effects it has on the science of our planet, while learning about friendship and teamwork along the way. Each episode features live-action segments with Jet Propulsion Laboratory astronomer Dr. Amy Mainzer, who is also the science curriculum consultant for the show. Digital content related to the series, including games, hands-on activities and parent resources, will be available on the PBS KIDS website. “PBS KIDS is excited to offer a new series that expands on kids’ natural interest in science and astronomy,” says PBS Children’s Media Manager Lesli Rotenberg. “READY JET GO! encourages a love of learning and exploration, broadening kids’ horizons to the outer limits of space and imagination.”

Students can watch SCIENCE TREK over the air or on the show’s website. They can email questions to [email protected] or submit video questions recorded on their smartphones or webcams. Students who send in a question are eligible to win prizes for their classroom. The SCIENCE TREK website offers facts, links, reading lists, a glossary, podcasts of programs, video shorts, full episodes, and special Web-exclusive programming: idahoptv.org/sciencetrek.

Sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste — these are your five senses. You learn about the world and how to live safely thanks to them. How do your five senses all work? What do they have in common? What happens when something goes wrong with one of them? On February’s SCIENCE TREK, host Joan Cartan-Hansen and her guests, pediatricians Dr. Naya Antink and Dr. Bradley Bishop with Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, answer students’ questions about the Five Senses.

Airs Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT Three new NATURE documentaries in February examine the lives of endangered (and extinct) creatures. Near a forest-rimmed Canadian lake, a moose is born. The odds are already stacked against this leggy 35-pounder surviving — but populations are experiencing even steeper decline now, and scientists are working to discover why. Moose: Life of a Twig Eater (February 10) gives viewers an intimate look at a moose calf’s perilous first year. Beneath a South American desert, paleontologists discover a giant femur — the largest dinosaur bone ever unearthed. Sir David Attenborough presents Raising the Dinosaur Giant (February 17), a prehistoric detective story that asks if this discovery could be part of the largest animal that ever walked on Earth. Snow Chick (February 24) follows the journey of one vulnerable emperor penguin from the moment he emerges from the egg to the day he leaves for the sea as a boisterous adolescent. Along the way he encounters Adélie penguins, feisty birds half his size who fight to claim summer breeding grounds. An encore presentation of Mystery Monkeys of Shangri-La airs February 3.

Airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT Four new NOVA documentaries in February explore discoveries on the cutting edge of science and technology. Few life forms on land can light up the night, but in the dark depths of the ocean nearly 90 percent of species shine from within. In Creatures of Light (February 3) deep sea scientists discover how these creatures harness light to scare off predators or lure a mate — and how humans can harness these discoveries to track cancer cells and illuminate the inner workings of the brain. Researchers on the cutting edge of mind control are learning how to implant, alter and even erase memories in the brain. Memory Hackers (February 10) takes a journey into the mysteries of the mind and investigates the complicated nature of how the brain creates, stores and retrieves memories. Murdered more than 5,000 years ago, “Otzi the Iceman” is the oldest known human mummy on Earth. Using newly discovered evidence, Iceman Reborn (February 17) brings Otzi to life with 3D modeling to shed light on this ancient man and on the dawn of civilization in Europe. Machines with human-like capabilities have long been the stuff of science fiction — until now. Rise of the Robots (February 24) introduces the world’s most advanced humanoid robots as they leave the lab, battle real-world challenges and endeavor to become part of humans’ everyday lives.

With Sasha back in fighting form, UCOS investigates the death of a talented cricket prodigy — star of the pitch and apple of his father’s eye, yet loathed by his teammates. The Fame Game (February 28). In 1997, the newlywed Shivani Das is attacked on a canal towpath and lies in a coma. With the help of Asian community liaison officer Sgt. looked out across the Weippe

Prairie, he made a not e i n h i s d i a r y : “ We a re p r o ce e d i ng o n th r o u g h a b e au ti f ul cou nt r y.” It truly must have been beautiful, for they had barely survived a winter trek across some of the roughest country in Idaho. And that route was the easiest one, according to their Native American guides. The quote became a too-long title (nothing else said it so well) for IdahoPTV’s Centennial history series, hosted by Drich Bowler. Three years in the making, the 13 one-hour programs were put together by a basic staff of five people – Susan Stacey, Jeff Tucker, Peter Morrill, Royce Williams, and Erich Korte. When it was finally ready to air, we had spent eight hours on every minute we were actually on air. We had shot and logged 2,000 20-minute cassette tapes and interviewed a healthy percentage of people from all walks of Idaho life. The series broke new ground, both from the video we shot and the people we talked to about their Idaho experiences, much of it unrecorded before we arrived on the scene. Before the series, most people had thought of history as things that happened in the 1880s, but most of Idaho history happened in the 20th century. – Royce Williams

The show has since won too many awards and too

many accolades from viewers to fit into this limited space. We’re talking about OUTDOOR IDAHO, of course, but none of us on that early show back in 1986 had time to think about all that. We were just happy to have three 7- to 10-minute stories ready to air. We were breaking some new ground. Few other stations were using the 3-story or magazine format on shows, and fewer still were tying together three in-state stations by having a story originate from each of Idaho’s three geographic regions. But with these innovations we still weren’t getting out of the studio. Three years in, we escaped the confines of the studio, and Bruce Reichert became host. We did one thing, however, that no show that we know of has done since or before. We opened each show with a video essay – great videography by Peter Morrill and Jeff Tucker, set to music and scripted by Royce Williams. We were sure the essays reflected how most Idahoans felt about the outdoors, feelings they were rarely able to put into words. – Royce Williams

Airs Tuesdays, beginning February 9, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT OUR ZOO (February 9) is a six-part BBC drama based on the inspiring story of George Mottershead and his family in the 1930s. With incredible single-mindedness, the Mottersheads realize George’s ambition to transform a ramshackle house on the outskirts of Chester into a unique visitor attraction that will forever change the way zoos keep animals. The drama follows George’s inspiring and challenging journey as he moves his wife, two young daughters and parents — along with a monkey and a parrot — into a drafty old stately home. With a derelict plot of land, mounting debts, no resources or manpower and a concerted campaign from the local villagers to halt George’s plans entirely, it is a race against time for the Mottersheads to build and open their zoo before the harsh winter sets in, or the bailiffs arrive.

Every two days the human race is now generating as much data as was generated from the dawn of humanity through the year 2003. The massive gathering and analyzing of data in real time is allowing researchers to address some of humanity’s biggest challenges, from pollution to world hunger. But as Edward Snowden and the release of National Security Administration documents have shown, the accessibility of all this data comes at a steep price. THE HUMAN FACE OF BIG DATA captures the promise and peril of this extraordinary knowledge revolution.
