Mike Travisano ‘Elk of the Year 2010’

by Marianne Chickene,

All the Southeast District Elks of the Year were honored at a dinner/dance on Saturday, May 15th at Toms River Lodge. It was a festive evening and all the attendees were ready to party. Dinner included; salad, roast beef, mashed potatoes, string beans with coffee and cake for dessert. Point Pleasant Lodge was so well represented with four tables full of enthusiastic well wishers for Mike Travisano it was almost embarrassing when they called his name and all 32 of us stood up and let everyone know how proud we are of him. He truly exemplifies the motto "Elks care, Elks share".

event. Cooking, Cleaning, or attending a Friday Night Dinner. Or even sharing a conversation and cocktail at the bar. Elks prove over and over that membership is the heart and soul of our lodge. So, if Membership is construed as the heart and soul of our lodge, then it stands to reason that dues are the lifeblood. Without your dues the heart and soul can not flourish. Dues, in our Order, sustain our membership. When you pay your dues you are telling the membership that you share their values and support the foundation upon which the Elks was formed. Please help us continue to keep Elkdom strong!

EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE by Valerie Famous, ER

Hello my fellow Elks, Membership, Membership, Membership the theme of this month’s message! Membership is defined as, “The members of a group or set considered collectively.” What are Elks, “a group of members who guide their course by the principles of our Order – Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity.” These words may be a bit more dramatic as they relate to the Elks but in essence these are the same values that chart the course for our everyday lives. Collectively, support of these values is enacted everyday at the Elks. Whether your support comes to us in the form of volunteering or attending a lodge or committee meeting, running, chairing or attending a special

Sunday, May 9,2010, was Mothers Day at the Elks, this year was a resounding success. Sun, clear blue skies and warm temperatures greeted our mothers and grandmothers as they arrived at 10:OO am. Lodge Esquire, Jan Picarell greeted them at the door with Red and White Carnations. Thirty beautifully attired mothers were in attendance. Our Tradition in Elkdom honors a deceased mother with a white carnation; a red one signified a living mother. The mothers and their families took their seats and Valerie Famous, ER began the ceremony with “Members and Guest, we are here to honor our mothers whose influence is a continuous force in our lives," each officer in turn spoke a tribute honoring mothers. Our Chaplain led us in prayer with the words “Bless the Mothers, guiding and inspiring childhood.” The tradition at our Lodge honors three significant mothers, The oldest, youngest and the one with the most grandchildren. Each of these were presented with a bouquet of flowers. Following the service everyone was served brunch in the grill room. Thank you Sharon Haugh, coordinator of the event and Georgianna Walsh for an outstanding meal.

Dear Veterans Committee, Sorry this has taken much longer than it should have, but I wanted to thank you for the two boxes that you have sent my squadron's way. We all had fun read‐ ing through the essays that you sent along with all the goodies. Attached is a picture of my shop holding up some stuff from the care packages. I am the one holding all the essays. Keep in mind that during march, the people that are able to grow a mustache do. Mine isn't all that great. I was very happy to get rid of it. Haha. So don't think that is how we all normally look! Again, thank you very much for the care packages and helping us get that lit‐ tle bit of normal over here. Please thank everyone who had a part in putting them together for my squadron and me. Thank you, Sr. A. John Caporaso 447th Expeditionary Civil Engineering Squadron

BELMONT STAKES

History of the beginning: The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father who made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day. “Any man can be a Father, but it takes a special person to be called Dad.”

ELK OF THE MONTH by Valerie Famous, ER

Jean Collins Jean has been a member of our lodge since 2002 and truly embodies Elkdom. Shortly after becoming a member, Jean joined the Veterans Committee. Jean was instrumental in forming a group to play cards at the Burnt Tavern Convalescent Center where they play cards every Friday with the Vets. During her time on the Veterans Committee, Jean has assisted in the 50/50 Octoberfest raffle spending countless weekends on the boardwalk as well as selling tickets during the event. Jean has assisted the Vets with their summer fishing trips staying back at the lodge and helping prepare lunch and serving lunch when they return from fishing. Jean marches in the Memorial Day Parade on behalf of our Lodge on both Saturday (Point Pleasant Beach Parade) and Sunday (Point Pleasant Parade). Most recently, Jean helped with the Vets at the Annual Elks at the Blue Claws Day. Jean can be found at our lodge most Fridays enjoying a Friday Night dinner with her sisters, Margie and Lois and her dear companion Bob. So, please come down and join me in congratulating Jean Collins for being our June Elk of the Month.

Congratulations Jean !!! Big Welcome To Our Newest Members of Point Pleasant Elks # 1698

Best Dressed Winners Marge McGhee won a Victoria Secret Gift Card & Bob Haugh won a Home Depot Gift Card. by Jessica Van Nest,

Well, the Pajama party was back this year and everyone really came out in their best jammies and had a great time. We were fortunate to have great gift baskets that were filled with donations from some of our fellow Elks including Eileen Miller (Party Lite) and Michele Ramirez (Lee Richards Jewelers). The jukebox was on and people danced. All enjoyed the drink specials and of course the Italian Hot dogs and Pretzels . There were prizes for best male and female PJ's and since most came in their PJ's it was a tough decision! I also want to thank my great co-chair of this event Linda Regec for her hard work but also because we had a blast getting it all together. We made a nice profit for the lodge’s beautification and hopefully it will be even bigger next year!
