WIRES X One of the items I was looking at purchasing while at the Dayton Hamvention was the Yaesu HRI-200. This is their compatible Wires-X unit for the C4FM digital radios. What is Wires-X, anyone who has experience with Echolink would be somewhat familiar with Wires-X, but Wires-X is like Echolink on steroids. Wires-X stands for is WideCoverage Internet Repeater Enhancement System. It simply hooks up a repeater system or radio to the internet and uses VOIP (voice over internet protocol) to extend your coverage area on VHF/UHF. Without getting too complicated what this allows you to do, is communicate with hams anywhere in the world using a simple VHF or UHF HT or radio. Since I bought my unit and hooked up my system I have had contacts with hams from Australia, Korea, England, Japan and all thru the US using my Boefang HT walking around the house, (at that time for testing I was running in analog mode). I am not going to get into too much of the details here but I do want explain some of the operation and invite you to use the system. Currently I am running a Wires-X node out of my shack in Fremont. This is the connection point between the radio and the internet VOIP. At the node is a “room”. The room is where you can communicate with anyone that is in the room. You can find a full list of operating rooms off Yeasu website https:// www.yaesu.com/jp/en/wires-x/id/active_room.php Look at the listing, the DTMF ID is a 5 digit room id that is also used to connect to the room using a touch tone pad on your radio mike or HT if the node is running in analog mode. The Room ID is the name of the room, the Act is how many are connected to that room and the other info is city, state and country, and of course comments. My node # is 18411 and my room number or DTMF ID is 28411. I am currently operating my node on a two meter simplex frequency 145.630. Nodes are either digital or analog. As of now I am running my node in digital mode. Analog and digital nodes can connect and converse with each other without any issues. The big difference is some of the digital features are not available to the local user if the node is analog. You will need a Yaesu digital radio to connect to a digital Wires X node. And any radio can connect to an analog node. If you wish to use my node and connect to a room I will provide some basic simple instructions. First realize my shack is about 20 miles west of highway 41. I can activate my node from my mobile from my work location which is by Wisconsin Ave and Perkins St in Appleton without any issues, so if you live in the valley and have a decent 2 meter base antenna and a 25 watt rig you should have no problem accessing the node. So let’s say you want to enter a room, you checked the Yaesu room list and see the 21080 room looks interesting. It’s called America-Link and it’s located in Beaumont Texas. To access the room you must be on the node frequency, so in my case 145.630, push the “D X” or “X” button on the Yaesu digital radio, if you are in range you will get a connect message. Using good amateur practice, stand by and listen for a minute to make sure there is no activity, also if the node is already connected to a room you will see what room is connected at that time on your radio screen. If you want to connect to a room like America-Link you should see a search window where you can search using the room number (for my example 21080) or room name (America Link is listed as - - - America-Link- -) so if you enter - - - A you should see a short list with America Link on the list, tap on it and it will connect to that room. Again wait and listen to see if the room is being used by others, then if you want, put out a general call, like, “This is N9AOT in Wisconsin listening” and see if you get a responds. Don’t be surprise as who maybe calling you back. When you are all done using the room and want to disconnect from the room simply hit * key on your touch tone pad (you don’t need to hit the transmit, it will do it by itself), or if your using the new FT2DR the “Band” button will disconnect from the room. If you successfully disconnect, you will get a disconnect acknowledgement. It really is as simple as that. When you are all done just hit the “D X’ or “X” button on the radio to disconnect from the node. Let’s go the other way, say you’re at Radio Expo outside of Rockford Il and you want to get hold of your buddy up here in the valley. Rockford has a repeater WW9P that has Wires-X capabilities. You can access the repeater (ask if you can use the node) punch in my ID code #28411 or my room name is –Wolf-River-Room- now you have entered my room and if your buddy is monitoring my simplex frequency 145.630 you can put out a call and tell your buddy the great buys you made at Radio Expo. This is the simple break down of Wires-X. There is much more and much more you can do. One side note, since I wrote this brief article, Rick W9RIC has started linking his HRI-200 and Gary KB9AIT decided to buy one as well and opened a node by his QTH. There is additional information on node’s and node frequency on the Yaesu webpage https://www.yaesu.com/jp/en/wires-x/index.php in addition search YouTube for Wires-X, there are some great videos on how to connect and how to use Wires-X. 73’s Terry N9AOT Copyright © 2016, Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club, All Rights Reserved.
