Jake LaRose: A real life superhero! (as featured on NYP.org)

Superheroes aren’t just found in comic books and movies. Sometimes you find them in pediatric intensive care units. Jacob LaRose almost didn’t make it to pre-K. The 4 year old boy had contracted a rare complication from E. Coli. When he arrived at New YorkPresbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, doctors realized he not only had E. Coli, but hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which caused his kidneys to fail. 10 days later, the E. Coli had eaten 75% of his colon and he had 3 perforations in his bowel. Dr. Nitsana Spigland, chief of pediatric surgery, was called in to do emergency surgery on Jake’s crumbling body.

When surgeons opened him up, his abdomen was filled with stool. Miraculously, the little boy made it through the night and held on. Dr. Spigland performed surgery 3 more times before finally clearing out his abdomen. “Taking care of Jake really required amazing team coordination and support and the credit is really in the effective team approach of his care,” Dr. Spigland said. “Everyone had daily debriefings to put together all of our heads to manage him in the most effective way.” Today Jake is living as normal a life as any other healthy 4 year old.

Awards and Honors Dr. Rache Simmons, Chief of Breast Surgery and Anne K. and Edwin C. Weiskopf Professor of Surgical Oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, published a new clinical study in the Annals of Surgical Oncology, which found that cryoablation is a viable treatment for some breast cancers. The trial marks the first time cryoablation has been studied for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer in a multicenter study. Physicians have only recently begun using this deep-freezing technique for early-stage breast cancer, which traditionally treated by a combination of radiation and surgery. The results from this trial are extremely promising and cryoablation appears to represent a unique and patient-friendly treatment of some breast cancers.

Dr. Jonathan Abelson, AHRQ Clinical Research Fellow, Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, won the first place prize in the poster session from the Housestaff Quality Council. The title of the poster was “Utilizing the ACS NSQIP Risk Calculator in Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference”.

Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, Lewis Atterbury Stimson Professor, Chairman of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, was the recipient of the 2016 AWS Past Presidents’ Honorary Member Award on behalf of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) and the AWS Foundation for his outstanding contributions to the development of women in surgery. This award was presented at the 35th Anniversary AWS Foundation Awards Dinner during the American College of Surgeons Annual Clinical Congress in Washington, D.C. at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel. The AWS Foundation supports education projects such as surgical research by female physicians and is dedicated to sponsoring activities that advance women’s careers in surgery. The mission is to provide opportunities for the educational and professional growth of women in surgery.

Awards and Honors Dr. Shuibing Chen, Assistant Professor of Chemical Biology in Surgery and of Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Todd Evans, Peter I. Pressman, MD Professor of Surgery, Vice Chair for Research, Chief of the Division of Surgery Research, Department of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College and Dr. Johannes Graumann, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, published a paper in Cell Stem Cell titled, “Using hESCs for Discovery of a Drug that Targets a Diabetes Gene identified through GWAS”. Dr. Chen and colleagues developed an innovative method to identify patient-specific drugs for treating diabetes. This technique uses human embryonic stem cells to model type 2 diabetes caused by genetic mutations. Furthermore, this may enable researchers to identify drugs that could treat the disease and may extend the use of precision medicine to metabolic diseases.

Dr. Cheguevara Afaneh, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Associate Fellowship Director, Advanced GI and Minimally Invasive Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, was an invited panelist at the 92Y Talks on “Robotics In Medicine” sponsored by Weill Cornell Medicine. The past decade has produced tremendous advances in the use of robotics across clinical areas, vastly expanding the horizons of disease management.

Congratulations, Dr. Daniel Hunt, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and Assistant Attending Surgeon at NewYorkPresbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College on receiving the NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital 2016 Physician of the Year Award.

Awards and Honors Dr. Karim J. Halazun, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, performed the first fully robotic liver resection at Weill Cornell Medicine with co-surgeon,

Dr. Cheguevara Afaneh,

Assistant Professor of Surgery, Associate Fellowship Director, Advanced GI and Minimally Invasive Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine. Robotic surgery combines the benefits of traditional minimally invasive surgery, already widely used in general surgery and in organ procurement from living donors, with the accuracy and safety of the robotic system. Thanks to its articulated tools, this system can perform movements that would be impossible for the surgeon’s hand. This not only allows to perform complex procedures (such as procurement of a portion of a liver for transplant) using a totally safe minimally invasive technique, but also involves a shorter post-operative recovery time for the donor and a lower risk of intra-operative hemorrhage, reduced pain and quicker return to normal life.

Dr. James J. Gallagher, Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery and Director of the William Hearst Burn Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, led the Burn Team through the American Burn Association recertification process. In Memoriam | Frank G. Moody, MD

Dr. Frank G. Moody

It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of a former medical student and General Surgery resident at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Frank Moody graduated from our General Surgery residency program in 1956. After academic positions at UCSF and UAB, he became Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah and then at the McGovern School of Medicine at UTHealth in Houston. A native of Franklin, New Hampshire, Dr. Moody graduated from Dartmouth and subsequently spent time in the United States Army, where he was posted to northern Japan after World War II. He would then embark on a remarkable academic surgical career involving novel and seminal investigations into gastrointestinal physiology and surgery, and would cultivate the careers of dozens of future academic surgeons who now hold a multitude of Distinguished University Chairs, Department Chairs, and Deanships.
