December 2016 - Chanukah

MESSAGE FROM RABBI RAMI

The “Human Miracle” of Hanukkah By Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky Hanukkah is known as a festival of miracles. As we read in the Talmud (Shabbat 21b), “What is Chanukah? ... When the royal Hasmonean family overpowered and was victorious over [the Greeks], they searched and found only a single cruse of pure oil... enough to light the menorah for a single day. On the following year, they established these [eight days] as days of festivity and praise and thanksgiving to God.” Yes, the miracle we remember during Hanukkah is that the special kosher oil that was found by the Maccabees in the Temple of Jerusalem, ready to light the Menorah and burn for a single day, ultimately lasted for eight days, enough time to prepare more of the necessary oil. I invite you to think for a while about an interesting aspect of this famous miracle. The first day that the Menorah was lit was what I would call a “regular burning day.” There was oil for one day, so everyone understood that the Menorah would be lit for one day. Therefore, if we follow this fact, that first day that the lights of the Menorah were lit shouldn’t be considered as a miraculous day. After all, there was enough oil for one day! If you agree with me about this, then we cannot consider as a miracle that the fire was lit during the

first day. If you think of it this way, the miracle of Hanukkah lasted just seven days, and not eight. So, the puzzling question we can ask is, why do we celebrate Hanukkah for eight days, if the miracle lasted only for seven days? Should the Hanukkah Menorah have seven branches instead of eight? One interesting answer to this question was offered by the late Professor and Rabbi David Hartman (in the book, A Different Light, by Noam Zion and Barbara Spectre, Dvora Publishing, 2000). He believed that on the first day a miracle indeed occurred, but not related to the lighting of the Menorah in the Temple of Jerusalem. The marvel was the miracle of human courage, which allows us to dare to undertake challenging tasks without knowing if they will be successful. The Temple was impure, and before inaugurating it, the Maccabees had to make sure that everything was pure again. Many people must have thought, at that time of uncertainty, “Why should we light the lamp if we know that it is going to go out before all the works of purification have been concluded? Why not wait until there is enough oil for a longer period of time, while the work is being finished?” Nevertheless, a group of brave and visionary people insisted that the Temple’s Menorah had to be lit right away; that was their golden opportunity. That is why, according to Hartman, we celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. On the first day we remember the miracle of courage and human determination, while on the other seven days we commemorate the divine miracle. Sometimes, because we wait until conditions are ideal, we lose our best opportunities. We want so much to have all of our plans prepared and our future predictable, that we waste the opportunities that life gives us. When we believe there are some doubts

Temple Beth El

Page 2

about the success of our enterprises, we quickly renounce to them. The lighting of the Menorah during the first day of the Temple’s rededication tells us about the opposite attitude. It is about moving forward full of hope and belief, even when it is not certain that everything will be as we want. An excellent example of this attitude is provided by the Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel, in May of 1948. Back in those days, many people thought it was too early to declare independence, that they should wait until they had a stronger army, that they should wait until the world more firmly recognized Israel, that they should wait until world Jewry became more Zionist oriented, etc. However, a brave minority of the Jewish people dared to proclaim the rebirth of the State of Israel, an act of courage and heroism (and chutzpah too!) that resulted in a moment of incredible pride for all Jews around the world. That is why those outstanding Zionist leaders are often referred to as the “modern Maccabees.” The miracle of Hanukkah is not just about the candles that burned for longer than expected, but also about the human spirit, which seeks for a better future even when it is hard to see it in the horizon. The festival of Hanukkah encourages us to keep working and taking on new projects, with strength and valor, even though others may think that we will not succeed. Let us keep moving forward and lighting many more lights!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dave Ehrlich

Gary Kogon

Chanukah? Hanukkah? No matter how you spell it, the Festival of Lights arrives on Sunday, December 25 aka 25 Kislev, with the first candle being lit the night before. It is a joyous eight days of fun, games of dreidel, fried latkes, possible gallbladder attacks and gift giving. This column will not attempt to delve into a discussion of the miracle of the Festival and its history, or themes of the few overcoming the many, light vs. darkness, freedom vs. oppression, never giving up as opposed to quitting when things get tough, etc. Instead, these remarks will center on gift giving. As such, consider these suggestions for gift giving, both for others as well as yourself.

A

Annual Ladies' Night Out sponsored by Sisterhood is taking place on December 15 and will be held at Fiorentino's. A wonderful gift of an evening out, fine food and friendship!

N

Nourish your mind (and your appetite as well at Kiddush) with Shabbat service attendance. Energy, interesting sermon/d'var topics and discussion, enthusiastic singing with many new and enjoyable melodies introduced by the rabbis and, dare I write it, ruah! Give yourself the gift of some time off from the normal business of the week and weekend, immerse yourself in the prayers and songs, enjoy the wonderful food at Kiddush, schmooze with friends at Kiddush, and hopefully come away feeling recharged.

H

Have Fun at yet another Chanukah party, this one being sponsored by JCAL on December 18. And one can choose from either a brisket or vegetarian felafel dinner, catered by Boscov's. Another gift of fun and celebration. And did I mention the catered meals?

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As I reported in my November bulletin article, this past month had a lot of activities going on for our students. We had the following major events, plus many other small events that make learning for the kids more fun. 

different blessings each week and we give the kids games to help them learn the respective blessing. Then during our Hanukkah Party, we will have food items for each of these blessings and ask the kids to share which ones are needed to be said for each item. 

JCAL Sponsored a Field Trip for grades 5 and up to National Museum of American Jewish History in Philly. We had a great turnout for our first Friday Night Student led Shabbat preceded by a Corned Beef dinner. Having a dinner before is a great way to get both the Religious School families and other congregants out on a Friday to socialize and support the students in the school. The Education Committee will be working with the congregational leaders to try to make this happen more often. Thanks to all of you that supported the school by donating to our annual HaKaFoT-A-Thon. This year we didn’t raise as much as previous years, so if you haven’t made a donation to the school, you are still welcomed to do that at ANY time. Nonetheless, the students had a great time. We noticed that the students appeared to be getting confused by the various food blessings we do before snack time on Sundays, so we developed a multi-week fun lesson for the students in which we ask our parent volunteers to bring in snacks related to a specific

The Rabbis have been a great help within the school. They are teaching classes, substituting at times when needed, leading group snack activities, planning and suggesting congregational events that include the young families like the successful Sukkah Party we had a few weeks ago. We held our first Jr. Congregation service of the year the other week. Ralph and Lori Taber have volunteered to lead these services again. This is a great opportunity for the students to practice service leading skills leading up to their Bnai Mitzvot. Some of our students attended and participated in the JCAL Sponsored Sam Glaser Concert for which we had been practicing a couple of songs they were going to sing with Mr. Glaser. Thanks to Sheila Cohen for leading these practice sessions.

December will be another fun filled month. Despite the time off for holidays, we still have many activities for the students throughout the month. Larry Besnoff Religious School Principal [email protected]

JOSH SILVERMAN BAR MITZVAH DECEMBER 10, 2016

My name is Joshua Silverman and my Bar Mitzvah will be on Saturday, December 10, 2016. I’m in 7th Grade and attend Commonwealth Charter Academy – Cyber School. I live in West York, PA. I enjoy sports very much and love being active. I’ve been playing baseball since I was 8 and am a catcher. We won the “B” division championship game this past spring. I’ve played football for almost five years and this year I am the center and also defensive tackle for the Yorktowne Patriots team. Last fall, we won the York County Championship! I plan on playing football with West York High School when I’m in 9th grade. My dad has also been teaching me to play racquetball at the gym. I enjoy playing computer games like Minecraft and Call of Duty with my friends. I enjoy riding my bike and swimming in the summer. I love watching comedies and action movies. I also like funny television shows like American Dad, the Simpsons, and Teen Titans. I love all military type weapons and gun history. I really enjoy going target shooting at the range with my Dad. I also play trumpet and have for four years. I take private lessons and also play with the middle school

Temple Beth El

band. One of our big events is playing on the field with the West York Bulldog High School Marching Band. All seventh and eighth graders in the band get to play and march on the field with them and then sit in the stands and play the “bulldog” theme song whenever something great happens on the field. My Bar Mitzvah project this year is to collect donations and goods for the Hoffman Home in Littlestown, PA. We will be going out to the facility to take a tour and see how they help kids in need. We’ve donated gently used clothing to them for a few years now and I hope to collect more donations from the congregation for the kids. I know what it is like to have issues with anger and aggression. My parents were involved in helping me learn to control myself and as I matured, I had less and less issues with my anger. I can relate to what these kids are going through and it’s nice for them to have a place to go for help. I hope our donations and contributions can help make their lives a little happier and easier. *The following is a list of items Josh is collecting. Please put your items in the bins located outside the office area. Thank you☺ New Clothing for girls and boys, all sizes (children, teen & adult) Undergarments (no wire bras) Socks Shirts Pants Pajamas Sweatpants (no drawstrings) Sweatshirts (no drawstrings) Winter jackets ***OR gift cards to local stores, so our children can pick out their clothes…This is especially nice for our kids in care!***

BETH POMERANTZ EDUCATION SERIES SUNDAY, JANUARY 8TH @ 9:45 AM • BRUNCH AND SPEAKER JUDAISM, JEWISH COMMUNITIES AND THE INTERNET: THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF THE INFORMATION AGE Presenter: Dr. Andrea Lieber, Ph.D., Sophia Ava Asbell Chair of Judaic Studies, Professor of Religion, Dickinson College Thanks to the technologies that gave rise to the World Wide Web, GPS and Facebook, Jewish communities are more connected than ever before--to each other, and to the broader world. How has access to all this technology challenged some aspects of Jewish life, and at the same time opened doors to new opportunities for the Jewish community? We will explore traditional Judaism's strategies to limit access to web-based media, alongside some applications like blogging that have extended traditional voices into the public sphere in new ways. What are the politics of a "cyber-minyan," and who benefits from participating in services that are streamed online? How can tools like GPS and online archives be used to document, preserve and provide access to vital information about small Jewish communities into the future? We will discuss the specific example of Pennsylvania communities that have digitized their cemeteries in ways that will facilitate genealogical research for generations to come. These topics and more will be the starting point for lively and interactive conversation! Program will be preceded by breakfast. This program is free and open to the public. Additional support provided by the Temple Beth El Men’s Club Barney Epstein Programming Fund. Reservations are required if you plan to attend the breakfast. Please RSVP to the synagogue office by email or phone by January 2 if you would like to join us for the fr ee br eakfast. In addition, walk -ins are welcome to come for coffee/tea and the presentation.
