The veteran, his heir(s), or his assignees presented documentation of Revolutionary War service. Upon approval of the claim, the executive issued a certificate on which the Land Office register issued a warrant for the bounty lands. The certificates provide the name of the veteran, his rank, the line in which he served, and his length of service. They are dated and signed. If the claim was from someone other than the veteran, there are supplemental papers setting forth the assignment or the inheritance. In the case of the latter, the date and place of death and the names and addresses of the heirs are given. The accepted documentation of the military service will be found in the Bounty Warrants in item “k” supra.

The main index is contained on rolls 1–53 followed by a two-roll supplement. The entries are arranged alphabetically by the name of the patentee in the regal period of 1623–1774 or the grantee from the Commonwealth for the years 1779–1990. Each card gives the name of patentee or grantee, the county of location of the land, the number of acres, a brief description of the property, and the volume and beginning page number of the original record. Because the index was prepared from county abstracts begun in 1818, there are some discrepancies.

A typical file contains approximately 50 documents. The first series pertain to soldiers; the second pertains to sailors and a few marines. Each is alphabetical. Each of these pensioners also has a regular Revolutionary War pension file, but the more genealogically detailed records are in the half-pay files. A few of the files pertain to veterans of the Mexican, Indian, and Civil Wars. Abstracts appear in Gaius M. Brumbaugh, Revolutionary War Records, vol. 1 Virginia, R973.3/B893R/1967. The records give the soldier’s name, rank, length of service in months and days, and a remarks column. The latter may give alternative names under the which appeared, names of substitutes, and service notes such being discharged, transferred, or deserted. Because of the many lists include the county or residence, the rosters serve as a substitute for the 1800 and 1810 partial federal decennial nominal census returns.

Confederate Pension Applications, Virginia: Acts of 1880, 1900, and 1902 . Microfilm

109 rolls

Locality

Virginia

Virginia provided Confederate pensions under three acts. The act of 1888 provided pensions for soldiers, sailors, and marines who were maimed or disabled in the service and to widows of men killed in the war. It covered applicants who were residents of the state in April 1861 and who resided in the state at least five years before filing an application. Applicants could not have earned more than $200 per annum and owned no property valued more than $1,000. The veteran had to have been disabled in the service. Subsequent acts broadened the coverage to include all veterans, their widows, their unmarried or widow daughters, and their sisters. The pensions filed by sisters and daughters are extant and do not appear this microfilm series. The 1900 act extended coverage to widows whose husbands had died during or after the war from wounds. The 1902 act included widows whose husbands died from disease contracted during the war. It also provided for servant pensions, i.e., for African Americans. The index gives the name, county or independent city of residence, year of the act, whether the soldier or widow is the applicant, and usually a roll and page number. Many of the index cards for widows also give the name of their husbands, but that is not always the case. The dollar amount of the pension and the date of the pension appear on many cards. In some instances the year of death of the veteran also appears. The index is not to be considered complete because many veterans and next of kin did apply for and received pensions. Updated 3/4/2015 Guide to Microform Holdings in the Genealogy—Virginia 7 dallaslibrary.org/genealogy/

There are 196 rolls of pension applications, plus 13 rolls of index.

The collection consists of 85,000 images of documents on 16,858 frames ranging from January 1778 to 5 November 1834. Vital Records—Deaths Virginia Death Records, 1853–1896. Microfilm

38 rolls

Locality

Virginia

The registration of vital records began on a statewide basis in 1853 and continued until 1896. Information requested include the name of the decedent, race, sex, place of death [usually the county], cause of death, age in years, months, and days; names of parents, birthplace, occupation, name of spouse, name of informant, and his or her relationship to the deceased. It has been estimated that the records are about 65 per cent complete. Many of the registers are missing for some of the years during the Civil War. The counties are microfilmed in alphabetical order followed by the independent cities in the same fashion. Counties in present-day West Virginia are not included in this collection. Among published abstracts are (1) Walter E. Pippenger, Alexandria (Arlington) County, Virginia Death Records, 1853–1896, R929.37551/P655A/1994.
