28% Polish ICT export grew an average annual rate of 28% Poland has become specialized in consumer electronics, customized software production, electronic games and mobile solutions. The size of the Polish market for video games is estimated at USD 350 – 450 million and analysts predicted a strong growth in the coming years.

Computer gaming market is a powerful branch of the world economy with global sales exceeding USD 52 billion and is characterized by rapid growth. The value of sales is expected to grow by more than 40% and exceed USD 78 billion by 2015. Polish companies are becoming increasingly important in this market due to, among other things, international successes of Polish video game developers.

PROMOTION

Video games increasingly resemble great Hollywood productions. Most of Polish game developers’ portfolios include productions, even the major studios around the world would not be ashamed of. While in the early 90s gaming budgets oscillated around USD 100 thousand, today production budgets exceed USD 100 million. Video game producers also place higher priority on promotion. An example of this is CD Projekt – Polish video game developer – who in 2011 allocated PLN 6 million for the promotion of The Witcher 2 just in Poland.

Who plays video games? Almost everyone. As much as 45% of the video game players in Europe are women. 49% of European players are 35 or older. Today’s 40-year-olds, who raved about the first video games in their childhood, are now the most numerous group of players. The youngest age group of players (16-25 years old) prefer playing strategy games, action RPG, RPG and simulation games. Gamers aged 26-35 most often play logic and strategy games. Most of the surveyed players aged 36-45 enjoy playing logic, action, adventure, and skill games. The most popular video games among players aged over 46 are sport games, racing games, skill and adventure games. Most people (as much as 81%) in Poland play via websites. Mobile devices are in second place in terms of popularity – 67% of all players choose such devices to play. Only 43% of all players use video game consoles.

The potential of Polish game developers has been proved and many of them are ambitious enough to accept the global challenge. Polish game developers are known for their teamwork, imagination, diverse interests, game development.

Where the video games are made? Europe is not only the market for electronic entertainment, but also has a quite strong market position as a video game producer. Though it should be emphasized, that video game developers have their headquarters in two countries: Japan – the motherland of electronic entertainment, and the United States – mightier than any power on the current market of video games. Europe can also be proud of its video game development centers, for example in Great Britain and France, where many international level productions are created. In addition to the companies, which have been operating in Western Europe for a long time, this region is also experiencing an inflow of producers from Central and Eastern Europe. Poland becomes an increasingly important video game centre.

Polish games are sold in millions of copies around the world. The size of Polish video gaming market is estimated to be approx. USD 400 million (approx. EUR 320 million). The market composes of nearly12 million active players, with only 53% of them spending their money on games.

The electronic entertainment industry in Poland is growing very rapidly. Polish companies operating within this industry achieve increasingly numerous and spectacular successes. It is sufficient to mention productions such as: The Witcher, The Witcher 2, Dead Island, Dead Island 2, Sniper, Sniper 2 or Anomaly Warzone. CD Projekt, Techland, City Interactive or 11 bit Studios, Vivid Games – these are more and more recognized and appreciated brands not only in Poland, but also in other countries.

Combination of two worlds

Polish game developers have a great enthusiasm, passion and vast experience. Additionally, they are willing to experiment and are extremely creative. This is the reason why they are noted for their graphics, storytelling, creating new game genres, as well as sound. Talented Polish programmers and designers are compared to some of the world’s best specialists in the field.

An absolutely unique product from Poland is DICE + - world’s first electronic dice, which combines the world of tabletop games with the world of electronic games. Developed by Game Technologies, this dice is a technologically advanced device, which distributes roll results to devices that can communicate via Bluetooth.

Over the past three years Polish Game Developers Association (non-profit organization) have managed to create the most important event of the video games industry in the country – WGK conference. PGDA is also promoting local events, Indie developers and more.

Due to the highly innovative nature of the product, the market of games compatible with this dice is still developing and Game Technologies is currently the only producer of such games.
