Executive Summary

1.1

Introduction

This report documents the results of tests performed by BT Exact on the Infineon Technologies IFX VDSL transmission system. The IFX system is manufactured by: Infineon Technologies AG St.-Martin-Str. 53 81669 Munich GERMANY www.infineon.com The VTU system tested was a Single Carrier Modulation (SCM) transceiver based system. The transceiver was tested using manufacturer provided evaluation/reference boards providing Ethernet Interfaces, as well as a VTU control interface. The supplier can be contacted for additional information on this product. Testing was performed at BT Exact’s Local Network Test Facility located at Adastral Park, Ipswich UK between 28th July and 1st August 2003. The test specification can be found in reference [1]. Further details of the test methodology used by BT Exact can be found in [2]. Several deviations from [1] and [2] were requested by the vendor. These were as detailed below. •

Ethernet interfaces were used in place of ATM/Utopia.

Ethernet test data comprised fixed length Ethernet frames of 1518 bytes.

Reach was validated upstream and downstream at a single, vendor suggested figure.

The VTU system could be trained in the absence of cross-talk noise, with cross-talk noise at the nominal level or in the presence of cross-talk noise already increased by +6 dB.

Reach quanta were steps of 50 ft rather than 150 ft.

A modem daughter-board was changed part way through testing, in order to meet out-ofband PSD requirements.

In the light of the above, these results may not reflect those which would have been obtained if the measurements had been taken strictly according to the procedures defined in [1] and [2]. The remainder of Section 1 is a summary of the observed test results. Section 2 provides the detailed test results. PSD plots associated with the VTU system reach tests are presented in Appendix A. Section 3 describes two additional tests. These were performed to explore the higher bit rate capabilities of the system.
