This makes the world of driveline lubricants complicated. Many passenger car manufacturers apply their own driveline technology and use lubricants that last the entire life cycle of transmissions. To reduce this complexity Valvoline has developed a multi-vehicle driveline range that meet specifications of most main passenger car models. With commercial vehicle manufacturers the use Meritor axles or in-house manufactured axles is common. The most often used transmissions are manufactured by ZF or Eaton and in some cases in-house developed and produced transmissions. WHAT MAKES A GOOD DRIVELINE OIL? Optimum viscosity The transmission oil’s resistance to flow is a key characteristic and has a major effect on how the transmissions perform. If the fluid is thicker, it will flow through the system less easily and may affect operating efficiencies. If the fluid is too thin it will flow more easily which could result in better fuel economy, but could also fail to sufficiently lubricate and protect your system.

Thermal stability As time goes by, anti-wear additives in systems break down naturally, a process that can be accelerated by high temperatures. As a result, slough and varnish form, which can clog and reduce flow and interrupt system operation. Acids that are also formed can corrode some components. To reduce these problems, Valvoline transmission oils are thermally stable, long lasting and protect the whole power train.

Transmissions are vulnerable to water and condensation that can mix, causing corrosion of parts. Water can also react with additives to form compounds that degrade components. Valvoline transmission oils contain anti-corrosion agents that protect system parts.

Compatibility with seals Most transmissions incorporate seals made of elastomers and contact with transmission oils can cause seals to harden, swell or crack, particularly at high temperatures. Valvoline transmission oils are compatible with seals under a wide range of conditions.

DID YOU KNOW? API specifications are commonly used for gear oil classification

The American Petroleum Institute (API) created a classification system for gear oils based on application conditions and the type of gears most commonly used. The presence of frictional systems such as clutches or synchromesh rings in gearboxes as well as sealing material compatibility or component wear are not included. API gear oil classifications are now internationally recognized and used. The performance requirements for automotive gear lubricants depend on their intended use. API Category GL-4 designates the type of service characteristic for spiral-bevel and hypoid gears in automotive axles operating under moderate speeds and loads. These oils may be used in selected manual transmission and transaxle applications. API Category GL-5 designates the type of service characteristic for gears - particularly hypoids in automotive axles – operating under high-speed and/or low-speed, high-torque conditions. API Category MT-1 designates lubricants intended for non-synchronized manual transmissions used in buses and heavy-duty trucks. Lubricants meeting API MT-1 provide protection against the combination of thermal degradation, component wear, and oil seal deterioration.

For problem-free operation over the entire life cycle of the vehicle, today’s passenger car gearboxes need high-performance lubricants which protect against wear and significantly increase shifting comfort. In addition, extending oil change intervals make considerable demands on the quality of the oils. Valvoline has developed a range of lubricants that provide the best protection.
