MAIN ACTIVITIES AND SUGGESTED RESOURCES Activity 1 – What are you attracted to? Students use bar magnets to test a variety of items to see it the magnet is attracted to the material. CHECKPOINT – Animation – Is it Magnetic Activity 2 – Attraction and Repulsion. Students use bar magnets to show what happens when they are places N-N, N-S and S-S. CHECKPOINT – Animation – Find the Magnet

DIFFERENTIATION FOR EXTENSION/GIFTED AND TALENTED Extension – Model with class how magnets are made up of iron atoms. Each student stands up and puts out their arms to show a north pole and south pole which are all pointing in random direction. How do these atoms line up when they are placed in a magnetic field. Demo – making a magnetic using a solenoid.

Activity 3 – BBC Active Video Scrap Metal Thefts. Why do people steal metal? How can metal be sorted and recycled.? PRACTICAL Activity 2 – Sorting Metals

MAIN ACTIVITIES AND SUGGESTED RESOURCES Activity 1 – What is a magnet? 8Jc Students are introduced to flip 2 which asks students to consider the relationship between domain and magnetism. In pairs student write down a statement to describe the relationship they interpret. A brief class discussion and board annotation to help support this. Pupils will make magnet out of nails using the stroking method. Activity 2 - Following a brief demonstration of how to set up a power pack, students practically carry out the tasks in activity 1 and answer questions. http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/practical-physics/making-permanent-magnet Activity 3 - Students are presented with an investigative question. How would you make a stronger electromagnet? Ideas are brainstormed, and they are to assess their own basic electromagnet from activity 1 and consider variables to manipulate.
