Enjoy! Fall is the best time it ride in my opinion. There are far fewer insects to bother us and our horses, the weather has pretty much straightened out, and the sights and smells of autumn are all around us. If you haven’t joined us at a competition yet or haven’t ridden "enough" there are plenty of rides left to do. Don’t wait until next year, the rides that are remaining are wonderful. Even if you've not competed yet this year or at all, you'll be welcomed because it the perfect time to get your hooves and boots wet. And don’t wait to start that new mount until next year, give them a few trail miles this year! Come to a ride in the next few weeks and participate! There are even end-of-the year awards for folks who don’t ride much called “restricted mileage awards." Also on the awards page look to see if you'd like to nominate someone for the Hall of Fame, Dr. Beecher Shining Light Award, the Mentor Award, or the Outstanding Service Award. Attention College Bound and College Enrolled Students Applications are now being accepted through Monday, November 16, 2016 for scholarships for post high school educational opportunities. Applicants must have at least two years' membership in the Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Trail Association. The applicants must have participated in at least 25 rides sponsored by UMECRA and intend to study for at least a two year program. Former Wisconsin members Ray and Audrey Gehrig established this scholarship in 1996. Additional tax deductible contributions are welcome for anyone at any time. Many UMECRA members have made charitable contributions to support this scholarship fund in the past. We encourage members to continue to add memorial gifts and honorariums to the fund to support this worthy scholarship for youth and others returning to school. You can

Nominations Please! Part of the UMECRA banquet and awards ceremony in January celebrates outstanding volunteers, mentors, crew, and ride managers. Here’s a list of the available categories you can nominate your fellow UMECRA members: Dr. Beecher Shining Light Award This award was developed in 2013 to honor an outstanding individual who has provided tireless service to the UMECRA organization through managing of ride(s) and/or acting as a veterinarian. Nominated individuals should possess some of the following characteristics: being organized, helpful, honest, supportive, a sense of fairness, knowledge of the sport, consistency, able to educate and mentors others, able to delegate and able to deal with crisis situations.Nomination form available here: http://www.umecra.com/AwardForms/UMECRA_R MVetAward.pdf UMECRA Hall of Fame Procedures for nominating for UMECRA Hall of Fame: 1. UMECRA Hall of Fame nominations will be accepted at the fall BOD meeting in November. Nominees must have contributed to UMECRA. This should include an extra ordinary volunteerism given to the organization. There are no requirements that the nominees must be a rider or ride manager. 2. All nominations must be presented to the BOD in written form in one of the following formats: a presentation at the fall BOD meeting with documentation to be handed to all present BOD members, a letter sent to all BOD members, or an email sent to all BOD members. 3. All BOD members vote on the nominees in one of two ways: Voting at the fall meeting or by voting by telephone administered by calls from an executive BOD member. 4. The person submitting the nomination will be notified by a member of the executive BOD with the results of the vote. 5. The person submitting the nomination will be responsible for obtaining the award. UMECRA will contribute $500 each year for one Hall of Fame award. Any costs beyond this amount will need to be raised by the nominating person. The recommended award should be a picture or painting of the recipient enjoying distance riding. The award will be given by the nominating person at the UMECRA Annual Awards Banquet. Outstanding Service Award Sponsored by AHDRA and awarded to the individual who has shown outstanding service to the club and the sport of Distance Riding on a continual basis. The recipient is chosen by the executive board of AHDRA and is not announced until the annual UMECRA awards banquet. Sponsors of the UMECRA Top 10 Mileage Award Thank you Umecra/MnDra family for remembering my father Gordon Aanerud at the Pillager ride. It was heartwarming to receive and read your card. He rode the very first Pillager ride when then it started in town at the fairgrounds and he continued every year after when he was able. Colorama and SE were also

favorites. He was old school, he made his own electrolytes, did his own farrier work, only fed oats/hay, fleece saddlepads were the ticket, he conditioned in the dark, didn't carry extra baggage just a hoof pick in his pocket, helmets were too hot and only wore jeans. On the trail everyone was competition but he looked forward to the campfire at the end of the day where everyone gathered and shared stories of the trail. He won some and lost some but he believed "To finish is to win". He said the same things to me every time I was going to a ride...."ride your own ride" "own the trail" "be safe" and "I sure hope your horse can poop running because you know I beat Louise Reidel once because her horse had to stop and poop right before the finish line, so it can make a difference". Happy and safe trails to all. Listen to the trails and you will hear an old cowboy/endurance rider encouraging and cheering you on. Thank you, Vicki Rostollan
