Letter from the President Welcome to the 2015 Northland Exhibition. The MDLA Board is excited about the slate of presenters we have assembled this year. We hope you take full advantage of this learning opportunity. We can say with much certainty that our industry is going through some changes. Digital dentistry is here to stay, and although still in its infancy, it is proving to be a disruptive technology. Disruptive is a word that tends to connote a negative meaning. As dental technicians, our challenge is to take the “disruption”, and utilize it to our advantage, turn it into a positive. We use a lot of the same tools, equipment, etc. as the hearing aid industry. Their industry lost a large majority of their market share to outsourcing, cheap labor, etc. Now that they have adopted digital technology, most of that work is back here in the U.S., and specifically right here in Minnesota. We can compete with anyone in the world. Being efficient is paramount. That might mean we need to rethink some of the “we have always done it that way” thinking. Actually, it doesn’t mean we might need to rethink it, it means we HAVE to rethink it. The rest of the world isn’t waiting for us to reinvent our operations. Speaking of rethinking our processes and systems, our association is no different. Mergers and acquisitions, the aging of lab owners, and many other factors are changing the dynamic of dental lab associations. With that in mind, the Midwest Dental Laboratory Association has welcomed a new group of labs into our association. The Iowa Dental Laboratory Association is now part of the MDLA. This will only strengthen our base, adding years of experience, as well as more leadership to the MDLA. The addition of the IDLA adds some great people with a wealth of knowledge, and a truly midwestern hard work ethic. The addition of the students of Kirkwood Community College also adds an exciting element, a highly rated dental lab technology education program. I urge you all to welcome our new members, find out about them, get to know them, share ideas, struggles, and victories with them. We are all in this together!

Todd Mayclin, CDT MDLA President

They Say it Can’t be Polished

There are many types of porcelain, Zirconia, e-Max and other lithium disilicates, feldspathic porcelain and all milled CAD/CAM, see how you can achieve a truly high polish using one system that surpass all others in their finish, their speed and their longevity. Cosmedent’s All Ceramic Polishers actually bring the color and translucence out of the ceramic, unlike the flat finish of a glaze. Using slow speed and high torque, you can now easily create a high polish on all ceramic restorations in seconds. The All Ceramic Polishers are available in both an extra-oral and an intra-oral kit.
