RECRUITMENT OVERVIEW

F

ormal Recruitment is the main process that National Panhellenic sororities at UNC use to recruit new members. Formal Recruitment is conducted during the fall semester, beginning with Kickoff on Sunday, August 28, and concluding with Bid Day on Wednesday, September 7. The week consists of four rounds of events that allow potential members the opportunity to learn about each sorority at Carolina as well as what it means to join a sorority. During the recruitment events, women will have the opportunity to ask questions about sorority activities, financial obligations, new member programs, scholarship, community service, and sorority life in general. It is important to recognize that Formal Recruitment is a mutual selection process. All women will visit every house during the first round (Open House), but the remaining rounds are by invitation only. Just as the sororities are narrowing down the number of invitations to each round of events, potential new members are making selections based on the chapters they visited that day. The Panhellenic VP of Recruitment and the Gamma Chis will explain the process in detail throughout the week of Formal Recruitment. REGISTRATION INFORMATION

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS

To participate in Formal Recruitment, a student must be a full-time, undergraduate woman enrolled at UNC and be registered with UNC Panhellenic Recruitment. Registration is online at uncpanhellenic.com, and a $55 registration fee must be submitted online by August 15th. Any registration received after August 15th will be charged a $10 late fee in addition to the registration fee of $55. Formal Recruitment registration will be open until August 28th at 5:00 PM. Potential members are encouraged to register as early as possible.

A recommendation letter serves as an introduction of a potential new member to a sorority. These letters help chapters become acquainted with a potential new member before the Formal Recruitment process begins. Some sororities appreciate these letters and use them to help in the recruitment process. Recommendation letters must be written by an alumna member of the particular sorority for which they are intended. Should an alumna offer to write a recommendation, they may send it directly to the individual sorority at the address listed on the chapter contact pages at the back of this book. Although recommendation letters are helpful, they are not required.

GAMMA CHI PROGRAM

UPPERCLASS QUOTA Not sure if you want to go through Panhellenic Recruitment as a first-year student? Transfer student to UNC? No worries! Panhellenic Recruitment is not just for first-year students. In fact, upperclass women are strongly encouraged to participate. Established in 2011, the upperclass quota supports sophomore, junior, and senior women interested in joining a sorority and promotes increased involvement in the Panhellenic community. We know many upperclass women may be hesitant to participate in recruitment due to the limited number of spots available in each Panhellenic chapter and the large number of first-year students registered, but with the upperclass quota system, membership spots are reserved in every chapter, giving you more options as you explore what each chapter has to offer.

A Gamma Chi is an upperclassman member of a sorority who serves as a counselor to potential new members during the recruitment process. They disaffiliate from their particular chapter in order to remain neutral and unbiased to all potential new members. The counselors are assigned to potential new member groups, where they answer questions, meet together, and serve as a resource for women interested in joining a sorority. Potential new members will have the chance to meet with their Gamma Chis on a regular basis to ask questions and socialize with other women participating in the recruitment process. The counselor program has been designed by Panhellenic to support potential members before, during, and after the recruitment process and to address all questions and concerns. Your Gamma Chi will be a valuable resource to you during recruitment. For more information on the Gamma Chi Program, contact Katie Serafen and Maddie Barnaba at [email protected].

THE ROUNDS

2016 Panhellenic Recruitment Team

OPEN HOUSE

SKIT

Spending 20 minutes in each chapter house will give you the opportunity to meet as many women as possible during the first two days of Formal Recruitment. As an introduction to each chapter, you will watch a short song or dance. Panhellenic will provide all potential members with a t-shirt to wear during this round. These are the most fun and relaxed days, so be sure to enjoy them!

On Saturday, you will start by meeting with your Gamma Chi to receive a personal event schedule for Round Two. You will visit up to eight chapters for 30 minutes each. During this round, you will watch a skit, enjoy refreshments, and be introduced to more members at each chapter. Each sorority will provide you with important information regarding their philanthropy projects, social events, and other sisterhood activities.

6

PHILANTHROPY & HOUSE TOURS On Sunday, you will meet again with your Gamma Chi before beginning Round Three. During this round, you will visit up to five chapters for 40 minutes each. You will tour each chapter house. Chapters will have refreshments for you to enjoy.

PREFERENCE NIGHT You will visit up to two chapters on Tuesday. Each event is 45 minutes, during which you will take part in a special ceremony at each chapter, listening to sisters share what their sorority means to them and their most special moments as sorority members. This night will allow you to really connect with these chapters and determine in which sorority you would be happiest.

7

THE ROUNDS BID DAY: CONGRATULATIONS!

2016 Panhellenic Delegates

O

n Wednesday, you will enjoy this final and most exciting day of recruitment. You will meet with your Gamma Chi and group to begin a celebration with all sisters and potential new members. After finding out which sorority your Gamma Chi belongs to, you will receive your bid and meet your sorority and all of your new sisters.

8

WHAT’S NEXT? NEW MEMBER PERIOD Once you receive a bid from a sorority, your new member period begins. It lasts from six to eight weeks. Each new member will attend weekly meetings in order to fulfill the sorority’s requirements for initiation, including knowledge of the sorority’s history, purpose, and goals. New member retreats, study breaks, meals, philanthropy activities as a new member class, and social functions allow you to become close as you prepare for initiation. UNC’s policy states that absolutely no hazing is allowed. You will also receive a big sister, who will be there to aid and support you, and to make you feel more comfortable in your new sorority.

As a new member, you will be expected to contribute your time and talents to making a successful chapter. This includes maintaining high academic standards, attending regular chapter meetings, becoming involved in Panhellenic life, and serving the community. As a representative of your sorority to the University campus, you will be expected to maintain the ideals that your sorority has set for its members. Congratulations, and welcome to Panhellenic life at Carolina!
