Getting ready for AS German We are very pleased to welcome you to the AS German course. There is a natural progression from GCSE to AS Level and many of the AS topics build upon your GCSE knowledge. Language skills need to be practised – if you don’t use it, you lose it! It is very important that you don’t forget everything you’ve learnt over the summer!! In order to be fully prepared for September, please work through the tasks in the booklet. Some of the tasks are designed to revise GCSE topics which will form the basis of AS topics. There are also grammar tasks and some activities to help you to develop your cultural awareness.  

Try to do something most days and certainly, at least 1 hour per week on average Do not leave it until the last minute

Please keep all of your GCSE exercise books and notes.

Getting organised for AS

Please get equipped with the following before September  

 

A ring binder Subject dividers: one for each topic area, a grammar section, written tasks and essays/articles/authentic sources/independent work. Plastic wallets will also be useful to help to get you organised A good German dictionary (e.g. Collins Robert Concise German Dictionary) Stationery: pens, pencils and highlighter pens

Task 1 – Check you can use a range of verbs in different tenses

Task 2 – Write 100-150 words in German about your family. Try to use lots of the structures you learnt for GCSE.

Task 8 – Watch a German film You can download these, rent then from the library or video shop. BBC4 and Film 4 also sometimes show German films – so keep an eye on the TV schedules. Here are some suggestions: Barfuss Das Wunder von Bern Das Boot Lola Rennt Good Bye, Lenin There are far too many good films to choose from, it really depends what genre of film you enjoy. You could also watch British or American DVDs with German dubbing or subtitles on. Read the example review below then go to task 9. Filmkritik

Ich habe neulich den Film Mamma Mia auf DVD gesehen. Es war wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Schluss! Mamma Mia ist ein Musical mit vieler Musik von ABBA. Die Schauspieler tanzen und singen die Lieder, beispielsweise ‘Dancing Queen’ und ‘Honey Honey’. Der Film spielt in Griechenland und der Hintergrund ist wirklich schön. Man kann schöne Strände und Meere sehen. Der Film handelt von einer jungen Frau, die ihren Vater nicht kennt. Sie wird heiraten und hat drei Männer eingeladen, von wem ein ist ihr Vater. Die Themen des Filmes sind Liebe, Familie und Lebenserfahrung. Amanda Seyfried spielt die junge Frau, Sophie Sheridan. Sie ist sehr hübsch. Sie kann sehr gut singen und ist eine sehr gute Schauspielerin.

Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep und Julie Walters spielen die andere Hauptrollen im Film. Meiner Meinung nach ist Pierce Brosnan ein sehr schlechter Sänger, aber er ist ein fantastischer Schauspieler. Ich finde ihn auch ganz gut aussehend, aber nicht so gut aussehend wie Colin Firth. Mein Lieblingscharakter ist Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep), weil sie sehr lustig ist, sie singt sehr gut und ist sehr glaubhaft. Julie Walters ist auch sehr witzig im Film und ich habe den Film sehr humorvoll gefunden. Meiner Meinung nach ist der Film ausgezeichnet, es hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Ich würde den Film empfehlen.

Task 9 – Write a review of the film you saw

Task 10 – Complete the following ‘diary’ in German for each week of the summer holidays. What did you do? Why? What was your opinion? It doesn’t matter how uninteresting the week was, find something impressive to write in German. Was hast du gemacht? – What did you do?
