Sports surfaces from Polytan in the Gloria Sports Arena in Belek/Turkey:

Sports facilities second to none All-inclusive holidaymakers usually associate the little resort of Belek on the Turkish Riviera with relaxed games of golf, tasty buffet spreads and sun loungers. Guests staying at the Gloria Sports Arena sports hotel also end up in a sweat during their stay in Turkey – not because of the southern European climate, but mainly due to the packed programme of sport. These guests are not typical package tourists: they are ambitious professional and amateur athletes and include full squads at training camps. The type of sport practised is virtually irrelevant. Having opened in January 2015, the sports resort covers an area of eleven hectares and provides superb training and competing conditions for over 50 Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines. All the indoor and outdoor sports areas and equipment meet international standards and are on a par with those used at official Olympic bases. The high professional standards are also reflected in the choice of sports surfaces, which are designed to cater for the respective sports: there is a circular track, warm-up area, downhill track and 100 m indoor sprint track covered in the Polytan M synthetic surface from Polytan. The Poligras Mega CoolPlus was an appropriate choice for the hockey pitch, given that more than half of all league hockey teams in Germany play their matches on this professional synthetic turf system from Polytan. As well as athletics and field hockey, fans of numerous other sports get their money's worth in the Gloria Sports Arena. The indoor facilities extend over an area of around 6,800 m² and comprise a multipurpose hall for handball, basketball, fencing, volleyball, table tennis, indoor football and badminton as well as numerous sports halls for dancing, boxing, weightlifting and martial arts of every kind. Aquatic athletes can train either in the Olympic-size ten-

lane outdoor pool or in the 50-metre five-lane indoor pool. The swimming centre is rounded off by a diving platform and an outdoor water polo pool. The outdoor complex covers 35,000 m² in total. This spacious site accommodates tennis courts, beach volleyball courts and a climbing wall. The centrepiece of the complex is the football and athletics stadium with a covered stand for 1,600 spectators. The 100 m sprint track is situated beneath the stand, where it is well protected from bad weather and curious onlookers. Hidden away behind the stand is the downhill running track for intensive climbs and descents. Both lanes on the downhill track are approximately 83 m long with a gradient of 2.5 and 1.5 per cent. A second football and rugby pitch purely for training purposes is located just behind the stadium. It is enclosed on two sides by the warm-up area with a covered throwing area. Professional sports surfaces for professional requirements Like the warm-up zone, the downhill track and the 100 m indoor sprint track, the eight-lane circular track consists of a Polytan M synthetic surface in a brick red colour. In total, Polytan installed around 12,000 m² of the professional sports surface, which is 13 mm thick and impermeable to water. Poured in-situ, the two-layered surface in Belek has "IAAF Class 2" certification and thus satisfies the strict requirements of the International Association of Athletics Federations. The interspersed granules with visible tips make it ideally suited to running shoes with spikes. Excellent acceleration and tread elasticity are additional features of this sports surface. It has outstanding values in terms of sports medicine and thus provides good conditions for performance and competitive sports. "When it came to the first field hockey stadium in Turkey," says General Manager Richard Ungerhofer, “the unfilled Poligras Mega CoolPlus synthetic turf system was the product of choice”. This has all the qualities that professional hockey players and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) expect of a modern pitch: its compact and even surface does not produce a directional effect and is thus unable to affect the rolling behaviour of the hockey ball. This surface quality also allows a fast and accurate game. Although the turf is compact, hardwearing and easy to maintain with its -2-

textured (crimped) filaments, it still feels pleasantly soft to the touch. Another plus point is the CoolPlus function, which has proven its worth over a number of years and is part of the product name: pigments on the filaments reflect the sunlight so the pitch heats up more slowly and to a lesser extent. The larger reflective surface area of textured turf systems enhances this effect. The amount of water used to cool down the turf on hot summer days in Belek can also be significantly reduced. The colour scheme of the pitch proved to be attractive: the "grass green" playing surface is enclosed by an olive green border around the pitch – including manufacturer logo. Gloria Sports Arena – open to all performance classes The geographical location on the south coast of Turkey enjoys a mild climate which is ideal for elite sports all year round. General Manager Richard Ungerhofer – himself a qualified sports instructor – sees the sports complex as an alternative to the numerous golf hotels for which Belek is mainly known: "Our facility is set to become established both as a year-round venue for international sporting events and the best possible preparation for competitions of every kind." The 100-room sports hotel has in-house sports scientists and physiotherapists as well as a cold chamber and is suitable for national teams, clubs, sports groups and individual athletes, professional and amateur alike. Training camps, tournaments, sports weeks for children and young people, sport and trainer conventions, conferences and events are gradually being added to the range of services offered. The Gloria Sports Arena is currently preparing for the first Ironman 70.3 in Turkey, due to be held in autumn 2015.

The hockey pitch consists of Poligras Mega CoolPlus – a Polytan synthetic turf system favoured by more than half of all league hockey teams in Germany. The turf was also used at the Summer Olympics in London in 2012, but in a striking blue/pink colour combination.

Hidden behind the spectator stand in the stadium is the downhill track, including pit – this is also a Polytan M synthetic sports surface.
