The club’s2016 promo card. Printed with the horse on the front and information on the reverse side. This & our 60th Anniversary Directory will be available at the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry/Region 17/Region 18 booth at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, adjacent to Wendell Arena. A great piece that gets “the word out” about AHAEC and the Arabian events in our area! Hope to have as a handout at the All Equine Show in London next month (Zone 1 booth). Available at local tack stores/feed stores/vet clinics via the Directors. Need copies?—contact a Director. (photo courtesy of new member, Ken White of Arabian Horse Futures in Acton, ON)

Held January 16, 2016 at the Brant Park Inn, Brantford, ON. Called to order at 11:05 with 15 members and 6 directors present. Agenda was approved with no additions. Minutes of 2015 AGM were accepted on a motion by Janet Henderson, Seconded by Amanda deBoer. Treasurers Report- CAD current account 6269.03, USD 1474.52. Accepted. Jill will look into getting the year end date changed by certified accountant. Financial statement for F2015 and 2016 budget are pending input. Old Business- None Banquet- ticket sales are down slightly from last year, 78 vs 90 last year when the trophies were auctioned off. Thanks are extended to Jane (and Alice) for all of her help with the event, especially with the bake sale, centrepieces and club History. The current venue seems to be working out well, but relocation would be an option if required. If anyone has suggestions on ideas to draw people out to the banquet, please contact Alice. ProAm Show- Much open discussion occurred on this topic, which ended with a Motion by Allan Ehrlick "To study the hard cost of running an AHAEC one day show, and a western dressage show along with the Zone 1 show on May 15, at the REACH Facility. This motion was seconded by Janet Henderson and passed. Exhibitors, volunteers, show committee and sponsors are all required to ensure success--please contact a director if interested !!! Summer Sizzler Show- Judge will be Dominic Thibaudeau from Landenberg, PA. The show will run on July 6&7 2016, immediately prior to the Eastern Canadian Breeders Show, in conjunction with the Region 18 Championships at Western Fairgrounds. Fundraising: A small profit was realized from the publishing of the long awaited - and lovely- directory. Jane has also offered to match the funds raised from bake sale, as a donation to the fund for Woolners. Royal Horse Show: The Arabian Native Costume Class was presented to a full audience of 8,000 on both nights. The audience was caught up in the act, and enjoyed it greatly. Sport Horse: Local AHA shows in 2016 that will offer sport horse classes are Milestone May 7&8, Milestone Sept 10, and Region 18 offsite Sept 11. Canadian Nationals will hold sport horse classes, August 22-SportHorse Nationals will be in Boise Idaho starting sept 25. Tulip Arabian horse show in Richmond, ON June 25&26. Membership: Rates were increased in 2016 to help offset the increase in the U.S. Dollar, which is what the AHA portion is to be paid in. It is better for the club if memberships are renewed online through the members only section of the AHA website, and paid directly by credit card at that time. Please remember to select our Club for affiliate. Distance- Art King offered to help increase Arabian recognition by doing AHA paperwork and results processing for OCTRA competitions held this summer. National distance ride to be held 45 min east of Tulsa, OK on Sport Horse Nationals weekend. There has been approval from AHA to add Performance classes at the event, for both Purebred and Half Arabians, and divided between Competitive Trail and Endurance. Bob Coleman is planning a R18 50 Mile Championship ride at his Cayuse Creek facility. There will also be set speed competition, although it will not be AHA approved. For more info on set speed, check out the OCTRA OR UK Horse Society sites. OEF- New Member benefits are in the works that will offer more to all members. EC- Bronze membership is all which is required for breed competition, unless planning to show at Regional or National shows, where you must have a Silver ($80) license. Tina Collins is the Breed Sport representative (Arabians, Morgans, Hackneys, Saddlebreds, Road Horse, etc) and has been successful in clarifying the helmet rule. There is also a new EC waiver for competition. The EC conference will be held April 23&24 in Montreal. The Administration of Drug Testing for competitions has now been revised. A few changes worth noting include the use of firocoxib (Previcox), and the ban on Altrenogest in geldings and stallions. More details can be found on the EC Website.

Website-recent postings include the directory, eblast said and some videos. Open to suggestions of other content to post on website. Hoping to include links to AHA supplied video of classes for informative purposes. New goals for 2016--LEARN- SHARE-ENJOY!!! Publicity and Promotion: Improvements within the club are coming in the way of printed Directory, brochures, and hopefully increased benefits to members. The All Equine Affair will be held March 25,26,27 at Western Fairgrounds. Zone 1 will have a booth there, and welcomes promotional material to display. Discussion arose on how to promote Arabian horses as lesson horses, and some thoughts were shared on using some retired show Arabians as lesson horses. Places/people interested in offering facility tours, riding/driving/etc lessons with Arabian horses on the website or in future brochures are encouraged to contact a director. Help us to help you!! This past year has been both eventful & successful for AHAEC & the Arabian breed. We continue to do a broad spectrum of activities with the monies we have been allocated; however, we need to constantly monitor what we do each year and whether it needs to be repeated or revise the plans. Overall, AHAEC does a lot for the relatively small amount of finances we are provided, a total of $1,000 for the year for general promotion and $1,200 for The Royal booth. YEAR IN REVIEW: • Membership e-blasts as required • Monthly e-newsletters to members and to magazines/publications, plus persons of interest • Facebook posts (usually via Alice Draper) • Articles in OEF’s WHOA magazine 4 times per year, and posting of our e-newsletter on their website • Monthly submissions to AHA’s Regional Insider, feature notable events & activities • Co-operate with other organizations to promote the breed (ie. OCTRA, Side Saddle) and vice versa (acknowledging OCTRA rides & annual results, attend cross-over events, trade sponsorships, etc) • Conversed with vendors at equine shows to promote idea of utilizing product donations for AHAEC shows (ie. Barnies supplied a box of sample products for the Sizzler as did others) • Toronto Horse Day was extremely favourable for us, with attendance of nearly 2000 and with the Arabians having 2 horses for our stall display and demonstrations, this is a very rewarding experience to show the breed to the general population who have very little contact with horses or agriculture • Summer Showcase, a co-operative promotion between OEF, EC/Pan-Am and Ram Rodeo put the Arabian into a market we would not have reached through other ventures • The Royal was very busy with the Spirit of the Horse display and demonstrations in the President’s Choice Animal Theatre, and as much as AHAEC was not part of the organization group, the return of the Arabian classes in The Royal Horse Show was a triumph! • Organized the development of the club’s directory to commemorate the 60th anniversary • AHA continues to provide funds for our promo activities, being Toronto Horse Day, Summer Showcase and The Royal. Their financial assistance totalled $900 US (maximum of $300 for each event) • At our public events we held a draw, this year for a Breyer Arabian horse model & storybook • Thank you to all our volunteers assisting in our booth at the various locations, and to Janet & Eric Plouffe for bringing Lucky to The Royal and Summer Showcase, and to Charlie Zubrickas for bringing both Ari & Silver for Toronto Horse Day OVERVIEW: • Did a lot of things right in 2015, but need to delete/add as we go into this next year. All planned activities warrant a return to our schedule albeit Summer Showcase as that was a one-time only event as was the North American Team Endurance Championships. • Being cost-efficient is the priority, but printing and handout material costs dollars. • Volunteers spend many hours organizing, preparing, travelling, onsite management, writing articles, obtaining photographs. Many of us aren’t IT professionals, writers or photographers or graphic artists. Again we utilize what each person does best.

PLANS FOR 2016: • As long as we have owners and horses willing to attend our promo events we will continue to be at Toronto Horse Day (first Saturday in June) and The Royal (3 days during the show Nov 4-13). • Continue to submit articles for AHA, WHOA, The Rider. • Continue to send e-blasts and further enhance our e-newsletters. • Continue to run the classified advertisement in The Rider, as Barry Finn has supported AHAEC & the Arabian breed well over their 45 years. • Continue to offer handout material at events and possibly the draw. • Continue to cross-cooperate with OCTRA & other organizations to promote the Arabian breed. • Pursue submissions for the AHA Club Excellence Awards (due in August), ie club’s 60 th anniversary projects. • Review level off finances with the club and develop/enhance sponsorships to support our activities. • Handout inventory is low, require re-order of printed material and giveaways. • Directory has been printed and to be distributed to members in Region 18, as well at public venues (feed stores, vet clinics, tack stores, etc—each member will need to take initiative to do this). Royal Winter Fair- The Arabian Native Costume classes were a success in 2015 and are expected to be relived in 2016. When the anticipated 2016 Ontario Budget is delivered this spring, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) will be watching closely to see the items included that impact Ontario’s agri-food sector. As part of our advocacy role OFA annually submits budget recommendations to Ontario’s Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, advising government on areas of much-needed investment. OFA’s 2016 budget recommendations support the Premier’s agri-food growth challenge-to double our annual growth rate and create 120,000 new jobs by 2020. This ambitious goal requires collaboration between government and industry, OFA has identified 3 key issues that impact Ontario’s agricultural industry and farm businesses communities that must be considered before the budget is tabled. 1. Invest in rural infrastructure-Rural Ontario requires the expansion of natural gas infrastructure. Access to natural gas will lower business costs on farms ad throughout rural Ontario. OFA believes natural gas is the best infrastructure investment that can be made to support the agri-food sector and rural communities across the province. 2. Support farm business success-Agriculture depends on energy and we need a farm/industrial electricity rate to remain competitive in our national and global markets, and continue to grow our farm businesses. 3. Take action on climate change-Ontario needs to establish a cap and trade system that acknowledges the carbon offsets that the agricultural industry offers. And we must recognize the efforts that farmers have made and are continuing to make to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Addressing these initiatives in the upcoming provincial budget will put Ontario’s agri-food sector in a winning position to help achieve the Premier’s challenge for growth. (by Drew Spoelstra, Director Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Voice of the Farmer February 2016 issue)

Club Director Michelle Harbridge has assumed the committee chair for the ARRAB Program. Jean Dinsmore created this program back in the 1990’s, which was extremely successful and beneficial to our club amateur riders. Jean has agreed to assist the new committee to revive the program and to obtain sponsors. Sylvia Carruthers has once again sponsored the ribbons for all classes. More information will be released as the committee decides on the classes for this year. The ARRAB classes will be held during the Region 18 Championship Show July 8-9th in London.

January 16th was the club’s 60th AGM, over 80 people attended the meeting and evening awards banquet. Discussions during the meeting were very favourable to having more events & activities in 2016, the return of the ARRAB Program (a prize money program for amateurs), promoting the use of Arabian horses for riding lessons, expansion of the club’s social network as a means of communication and the continuation of Arabian horse classes at the Royal Winter Fair. Updates concerning the devastating barn fire were announced as was the Fire Relief Fund for Doris & Rob Woolner and Derek Jones, which is currently in process of being estabished with the TD Bank. Highlights of the evening included year-end high point trophies, AHA Volunteer Service Awards presented to Alice Draper and Janet Wojcik for the Club and Regional Level, Peter Cameron received OEF’s People Make a Difference Award. Also present for the evening’s festivities were many of AHAEC’s Past Presidents-Jill Barton, Ray Konkle, Kathie Keates, Alice Punter and Allan Ehrlick. There was a Judges’ Panel comprised of Janet Henderson, Jill Barton and Peter

Cameron, which was a lively discussion as the audience posed questions ranging from favourite shows to comments to improve the breed. AHAEC recently founded its Hall of Fame, awarded to members who have made substantial contributions to the club and to acclaimed horses. The first recipients include Freda Currie (posthumous), Jill Barton, Allan Ehrlick and Jane Whitwell. These hard working dedicated individuals have a combined 137 years actively involved as Board members. Dal-Apollo+// was named as the first horse inductee, as this National winning over fences gelding has also won the 2014 WAHO Horse of the Year. Members had a great time as they were able to review many memories of past horses and members displayed in ``Down Memory Lane``, as well as a compilation video screened during the evening. Overall, a wonderful time for everyone! If you didn’t attend the 2016 AGM & Banquet—you missed out on a lot of positive moments with great momentum heading into the year. Plan on being a part of the 2016 events and the 2017 AGM & Awards Banquet. For more information visit www.ahaec.on.ca

DEVASTATING BARN FIRE CLAIMS ARABIAN HORSES A quiet winter’s night on January 14th was interrupted by an explosion and fire at the farm owned by Doris & Rob Woolner of Mount Forest, ON. Despite efforts by the owners, a total of 12 horses owned by the Woolners and Derek Jones were lost, only a gelding owned by Derek was rescued and is currently under veterinary care. Horses include their multichampions as well as all broodmares and 2015 foals sired by Trussardi, 2012 US National Champion Futurity Colt. Over 50 firefighters from the local communities were onsite, however, by the time they arrived the barn was fully engulfed and had partially collapsed. Firefighters continued to work throughout the night to contain the flames from spreading to the house and other dwellings on the property. Woolners suffered health issues and were hospitalized, but released the next day. The fire is currently under investigation. All members of the Arabian horse community are saddened and shocked by this tragedy. Many of us are unable to comprehend the loss of so many fine Arabian horses at one time and the total destruction this has caused to our wonderful Arabian horse owners and friends. At this time the Woolners are considering rebuilding their barn, construction materials and tack donations will be accepted later in the year. Financial donations are welcome through Fire Relief Fund In Trust, TD Canada Trust A/C #30442 004 6426038. US donations by cheque payable to Allan Ehrlick In Trust, mail to 8259 Canyon Road, Campbellville, ON L0P 1B0 Canada. On behalf of Doris, Rob & Derek – thank you very much for caring, and assisting your fellow Arabian horse enthusiasts in their time of need. To everyone who purchased cookies, tarts & chocolates at the 2016 AGM. A total of $86.25 was raised for AHAEC & this amount was matched for the Fire Fund! Also special thanks to winning bidder Deb Leard-Growcott on the floral arrangement in the AGM’s silent auction. The top bid was also matched for the Fire Fund. A “bake sale” will be at OCTRA’s AGM later this month, and all proceeds will be donated to the Fire Fund. More fund-raising events are in the planning stages, details of these opportunities will be posted.

2017 EVENT CALENDAR January 14

AHAEC AGM, Best Western Brant Park, Brantford, ON

For 2016—the old photographs of many of our glorious horses and members from the past will continue to be published. The number of photos that have been submitted is noteworthy. The memories created are just too good and should be viewed by our members of today. Thank you to everyone for providing photos and stories as they have all been very much appreciated! New in 2016—Due to the current lagging value of the Canadian dollar AHAEC has had to increase the portion remitted to AHA. It is easier, more timely and less paperwork if you join AHAEC online via the AHA website—saves you time & money!

“HELP BRING DJ BACK” Saturday April 9th 10 am-4 pm at Cornerstone Stables in Erin. Multiple clinicians and demonstrations. $75 per person prior to April 1st, $85 after. Silent auction, food booth.

ALL PROCEEDS TO FINANCIALLY ASSIST ROB & DORIS WOOLNER & DEREK JONES. Great cause to help overcome such a tragedy. For more information contact Alice Draper 519-830-2432 [email protected] Check AHAEC Facebook for updates.
