ELFA® History

History of Siemens ELFA® Drive First work started more than 12 years ago, initially with MAN Before that time Siemens was only involved in traction for trolleybuses, based on tram technology The development of the ELFA system was based on automotive components from electric cars, upgraded to be used in bus application (i.e. operating hours, environmental conditions) and supported by our extensive experience in drive technology Start of series production 1999 with Mercedes Cito Midibus (more than 600 built) until 2003 First contract in Asia with Mitsubishi Fuso in 2000 Start Cooperation with ISE Corp. (San Diego) for the US market in 2002 (ongoing) Diversification to fuel cell buses, battery buses, ultracap & battery hybrids, boats, harbor cranes (RTG), delivery trucks and garbage trucks

History of Siemens ELFA® Drive – Conclusions drawn The serial hybrid is the optimum solution for hybrid city vehicles Absolute flexible with respect to the energy source Maximum recuperation possible (high power of the traction motor in generative operation) No change in components to future changes of the energy source, i.e. switch to smaller combustion engine and larger battery, or switch from small combustion engine to a small fuel cell, or switch to a complete battery vehicles High flexibility for the vehicle design Low noise operation possible, combustion engine rpm does not depend on the speed of the vehicle
The hybrid drive system must be of a modular design to be able to equip all types of commercial city vehicles. Modularity of the hardware components Modularity of the software functionality
The hybrid drive components must be of a design that can be produced in an automated high volume production in order to guarantee quality 600V system in order to minimize cable sizes page 7
