SMART GRID Toshiba’s smart grid solution is a highly advanced energy supply system designed to optimize the operation of power sources, loads, and distribution systems. A communication network simultaneously controls widely dispersed power sources and loads. Generation sources range from large conventional power plants, solar farms, and wind power facilities, to smaller scale fuel cells, microturbines, and residential power systems. System loads include homes, electric vehicle charging stations, factories, and office buildings. Toshiba is dedicated to helping energy producers and consumers maximize the effective use of energy via the smart grid.

KEY SMART GRID PRODUCTS MICRO ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (µEMS)

The Micro Energy Management System (µEMS) utilizes a combination of functions to control the load on the grid and adjust supply and demand in cooperation with electric power suppliers. The µEMS monitors the real-time demand for electricity and forecasts demand so that appropriate volumes of power can be supplied by solar generators and fuel cells.

TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS PRODUCT OVERVIEW TRANSFORMERS Toshiba pioneered the development of the first transformer in Japan in 1894, and since then has grown to be a world leader in transformers, providing these products to over 35 countries. Our product range includes: gas insulated transformers (GIT) from 30 to 400 MVA and oil insulated transformers (OIT) from 100 to 1500 MVA. All Toshiba transformers feature advanced core design and winding application and superior mechanical strength to protect against short-circuiting. Additionally, Toshiba’s OIT features an internal cooling method that protects against streaming electrification by insulating oil flow.

GAS INSULATED TRANSFORMERS Toshiba’s gas insulated transformer (GIT) is the most technologically advanced product within our transmission and distribution systems group. This product utilizes the insulating benefits of SF6 gas as opposed to oil. Consistent with Toshiba’s approach to provide the utmost in quality and performance, the GIT incorporates the most advanced SF6 gas available, which means that, unlike oil, it will not burn, explode, or contaminate the soil. When compared to oil-filled transformer options, Toshiba’s GIT has a much lower failure rate, has less impact on system outages due to transformer failures, is considerably lighter in weight, and offers a smaller footprint when combined with gas insulated switchgear. These features make the Toshiba GIT the perfect transformer solution for hydro-power and underground stations, densely populated cities, and offshore substations. Toshiba is globally renowned for its GIT manufacturing and for more than 40 years has supplied over 700 units around the world. Toshiba’s extensive experience as a leader in GIT technology includes the installation of the world’s largest GIT (400 MVA/330 KV) and the first US GIT installation, a hydropower station installation.

HIGH VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR Toshiba supplies both gas insulated switchgear (GIS) and air insulated switchgear (AIS) to the global market with manufacturing facilities in Japan, China, and Brazil. Toshiba’s state-of-the-art GIS system has been a leader in the market for over 35 years and is a good solution to meet the ever-increasing energy demands of densely populated cities worldwide. With a wide voltage range of 72 to 1,100 KV, our GIS can easily replace AIS systems to provide a reduction in footprint with minimal downtime.

MEDIUM VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR Toshiba provides medium voltage switchgear in up to 36 KV. Our solid insulated switchgear (SIS) is highly efficient, compact, lightweight, and environmentally friendly. Toshiba’s medium voltage switchgear is renowned for its high reliability, maintaining an impressive track record of no vacuum interrupter failures for over 39 years. Toshiba also offers a complete line of components for our switchgear product line including: vacuum interrupters, circuit breakers, and contactors.

POWER APPARATUS & COMPONENTS TIC entered the motor control market in 1979 and since then has developed some of the best solutions in the industry. As a world leader in motor control technology, Toshiba has provided significant advancement in medium voltage vacuum motor control. By following the most stringent standards, our Power Apparatus & Components Division has set a new benchmark in innovation, reliability, size, and safety. Today, we produce low and medium voltage control products from 208 to 6600 V.

SURGE ARRESTERS Toshiba has been a leader in surge arrester technology for over 100 years, providing a wide variety of application solutions including: substation equipment, AC-DC converters, railway power systems, and power distribution. Utilizing a zinc-oxide element, we manufacture arresters ranging from 3.3 to 1000 KV. These high-performance zinc- oxide elements also enable us to significantly reduce the product’s size and weight. Our product line-up for higher voltages includes: GIS, porcelain, polymertype, and transmission line. Toshiba also offers distribution-class and railway-type surge arresters for lower voltage applications.
