Transmission and distribution Bringing power to people

Transmission lines enable efficient and sustainable transportation of electricity. Transmission assets are a vital part of the energy infrastructure, the importance of which is increasing significantly due to several factors:

 increase in electricity consumption,  progressive separation of the

generation and consumption centers and  participation of renewable sources in the energy mix.

In turn, the concession model is becoming ever more frequent in different geographies. Abengoa possesses unique capabilities for the execution of transmission projects and to manage its own assets under concession regime. The company covers the entire value chain from design and engineering, supply of equipment, construction and commissioning, to operation and maintenance.

These capabilities allow it to transport energy, not only to large cities and industrial hubs, but also to remote locations and under extreme conditions. Some examples are the construction of the largest direct current transmission line in Brazil, spanning 2,350 km, or the construction of a 500 kV transmission line spanning 872 km in Peru, that reaches a height of 3,000 m above sea level.

Technology Solutions adapted to each environment

Currents and voltages

Substations

Depending on the needs of each environment, Abengoa is able to offer the best technical solution:

Abengoa is able to offer substations with the following technologies:

 Alternating current (AC) lines: lower

investment and greater ease in controlling the network.  Direct current (DC) lines: highly suitable for long distances, due to lower losses.  Underground lines: up to 400 kV.

As regards voltage levels, Abengoa has capabilities over the entire range, from low voltage lines (less than 1 kV) to high and very high voltage (400 to 800 kV).

 AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear)

substations: they are the conventional substations. Their switchgear, cables and busbars are air insulated.

 GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear)

substations: they require less space and have a lower visual impact than AIS substations. They are utilized in locations with extreme weather conditions, are armored, and their switchgear and busbars are insulated in SF6 gas, a better dielectric than air.

 Hybrid substations: a combination of AIS and GIS, with outdoor busbars and gas-insulated switchgear. They require less space than AIS substations.

 Converter stations: located at the

ends of the lines, they carry out the conversion between DC and AC.

Capacities and main references

Abengoa’s answer More than 26,000 km of lines and almost 300 substations Abengoa is an international leader in the construction of transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure, and one of the leading private concessionaires in Latin America. Since 2008, it occupies first place in the Engineering News-Record (ENR) ranking as the largest international T&D contractor. It has three metal structure factories in Spain, Mexico and India with an overall capacity of more than 120,000 t/year. Abengoa also has its own facilities for testing towers.
