Tourism in Key figures edition 2013
“Tourism in Key figures” is the little brother of our annual publication “Tourism in figures”. In a nutshell we want to present you the major tourism trends and the tourism flows to our region. In 2012 Flanders counted 29 million overnight stays and 11 million tourist arrivals. This provides information on where these tourists stayed, when they visited our region, why they came to Flanders on holiday and where they came from. We will also point out the economic return of the tourism sector in Flanders, seeing as this sector generates 6,9 billion euros in tourism consumption. Visit Flanders conducts new research on a regular basis and publishes updated arrival and overnight figures monthly. Consult www.toerismevlaanderen.be/figures to get regular updates on new tourism figures and research.

Definitions 1 Flanders = Flemish + Brussels region 2 Overnight stays and arrivals figures are collected by the FPS – Directorate-general Statistics, in commercial lodging accommodations (hotels, camp sites, holiday parks, youth accommodation and social accommodation for adults), including commercial rental accommodations at the coast. Not included in these figures : B&B’s (unless they have a hotel license), non-commercial rental accommodation, rental accommodation not located at the coast, second homes and permanent places on a camp site. The number of arrivals corresponds with the number of residential tourists, taking into account that each tourist is counted as an ‘arrival’ each time he uses a new accommodation. The volume of overnight stays is the total of all overnight stays associated with the registered arrivals. The represented arrival and overnight figures cover both leisure and business motives for the stay. 3 The gross occupancy rate is calculated based on the number of rented rooms in relation to the numbers of rooms available. The gross occupancy rate does not take into account closing dates. 4 Accommodation for target groups = youth accommodation and social accommodation for adults. 5 Self-employed includes the categories Hotels, Recreation, Cafés, Amusements, Fairs and liberal professions in art.
