Looking back on the month of November, we realize that our school and community have shared a number of extremely influential events. Among these was the Taste of Titan Culture II. This exciting event, held in conjunction with Seneca Ridge Middle School, attracted over 500 community members, as we celebrated the rich cultural heritage within our cluster. Many of our guests remarked that the Dominion High School stage provided a ray of hope for the future in a world that seems to be increasingly plagued by racial and cultural prejudice, hatred, and violence. In an effort to teach our Titans to eliminate prejudice by looking for the best in others, we brought “Rachel’s Challenge” to Titan Territory on November 14th. With support from ATLAS, Hair Port Salon and Day Spa, and Tally Ho Theatre in Leesburg, Dana Scott, sister of Columbine High School victim Rachel Scott, met with our entire staff and student body on that morning, challenging us to create a school climate characterized by kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. Ms. Scott shared a similar presentation with ATLAS in the auditorium that evening. While this was a moving, emotional experience for our school, we must now take steps as a community to embrace “Rachel’s Challenge.” We have identified a diverse group of 42 Titans who spent extra time with Ms. Scott on November 14th preparing to become leaders among us as we accept the challenge. These students will be working with parents and faculty members to make “Rachel’s Challenge” an ongoing commitment here at Dominion High School. While we continue to place highest emphasis on the development of character through initiatives such as “Rachel’s Challenge,” we are also working diligently to promote academic achievement for each and every Titan. We are already beginning to observe tangible evidence that our goal-setting initiative through Clubhouse is paying positive dividends. The percentage of failing grades earned by our Titans dropped slightly, but significantly, during the first quarter of this school year, as compared with the first quarter of last year. Most encouraging is the fact that these gains were most noticeable among our Hispanic and African-American students. Our ultimate vision for our school is that we will reduce student failure to the level of insignificance, while promoting the highest levels of achievement for each and every Titan. While this task is a daunting challenge, we will succeed together due to the commitment of our supportive community and dedicated staff. In just our third year, much of the necessary groundwork has been laid and we have begun to build the infrastructure necessary to make this vision for the future become reality. I urge each and every member of our community to remain focused on this ultimate goal, as defined three years ago by our Dream Team. Let us be resolved to avoid any activity that would distract us from this vigorous, noble pursuit. As we pause for winter break in a couple of weeks, I wish you and your family rest, relaxation, and safety. Thank you for your continued support of our noble purposes! John

ATLAS December Update – “Lift Up Someone Else” Steve Hammond (President) November was a very interesting month for ATLAS with plenty of progress, successes and, yes, new challenges. First, let’s give thanks to Jane Lettman, Ron Phillips, and Holly Flynn who stepped forward and joined the ATLAS leadership team as co-chairs for Project Graduation. Thank you. We should hear from them shortly as they begin to lay out plans for the celebration of our 2006 graduates. If you want to contact them now for information, please go to the ATLAS Leadership Roster, which you can find at atlas.dominionhigh.com under “Leadership”. Last month, ATLAS members and volunteers supported the ‘New Beginnings’ dinner and served as host families for some of the Austrian exchange students and teachers who visited Dominion High School. Many also attended ‘Rachel’s Challenge’ to learn about how we might create positive change and influence others. We cheered at the Taste of Titan Culture as current and future Titans shared their talents and interests in a multicultural show. All of these great activities brought together our community and people from around the world in ways that may not have happened otherwise. We learned that Renee Watson, our ATLAS Concession Operations Manager, intends to begin her transition from that position. Mrs. Watson has been an active participant with concessions from its planning stages. She has spent countless hours working to see that our family-friendly operation opens and runs smoothly. While she plans to continue to help, Renee is now interested in spending more time with her family. Thank you Renee, the entire Concessions Operation Team and volunteers for your dedicated service to ATLAS and Dominion High School. ATLAS is now seeking Renee’s replacement along with procurement help. If you have any interested in learning more about these positions, please contact the Board of Directors at [email protected]. Booker T. Washington said “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” Volunteerism makes a difference through the contribution of your time, energy, resources and talents to the causes you care about. We care about each and every Titan. One of the things all of the activities above have in common is volunteerism in support of our students. These activities reach out to share information with others, support their inclusion, or build and share resources. They are intended to support or lift up someone else. This has been an amazing year world-wide with regard to disasters and the need for volunteers and donations. I encourage our community to continue to help in these efforts whenever and wherever we can. Dominion High School and our students also need our ongoing support. Consider contributing to the ATLAS annual direct letter campaign and volunteer where you can. Join us at the next ATLAS membership meeting on Monday, December 12th at 7:30 PM in the media center. Last month we acknowledged the academic success of several Titans. This month we plan to acknowledge the accomplishments of Titans who participate in the fine arts programs. We will have a chance to catch up with our outstanding committees to see what they have been working on. You won’t want to miss this upbeat meeting. The draft agenda is on the ATLAS website. If you would like an interpreter or have special needs, please e-mail us at the address below so that we can accommodate you. Thanks to everyone who helps to make ATLAS a success at enhancing the high school experience of each and every Titan as they become responsible members of our community. If you have questions, comments, or feedback about ATLAS, please contact us at [email protected].

Activities included a French petit déjeuner in Breakfast Club, dinner at the Melting Pot, a trivia contest, painting the Rock, and designing a French mural. The following week over 100 French students went to see a production of Les Misérables at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. Breakfast Club News Breakfast Club continues to be the hot spot to be in the morning!! Our numbers keep growing and we anticipate that we will have even more students as the days turn colder. We are averaging upwards of 250 students each morning. We have so many people and businesses to thank. It takes a lot of support to feed so many students!

A WIN-WIN Promotional Event for Dominion High School and Independence Air Independence Air and Dominion High School team up to increase awareness in the community. Round trip tickets were awarded to one lucky winner at the grand prize drawing during Dominion’s Homecoming game on October 28th, 2005. At each home game, beginning on September 9, 2005, Mrs. Roberto’s Sports & Entertainment Marketing students sold programs in an effort to raise funds for Dominion High School and promote Independence Air, a solid service airline with outstanding customer service. For each program sold, fans received Flyi bumper stickers, schedules, and other promotional materials. Each marketing student was required to where a badge with their name, Flyi logo, and a question stating, “Ask me how you can win a free round trip ticket”. This created anticipation among fans, increased revenue for Dominion High School, and created awareness for Independence Air. Three of the programs sold during each game included an Independence airline sticker. During halftime, announcements were made asking the fans to open programs to determine if they had a sticker. The contestants who had the sticker were called down to the field during halftime to attempt a point-after kick, creating excitement, fan loyalty, and promoting Independence Airlines as a school partner. The contestants who achieved the goal got their name put in a drawing to be announced at the last home game on October 28, 2005. This fabricated excitement on the field. The central goal of the event was to increase attendance by creating a fun atmosphere for fans and families through giveaways, in-game contests, and promotions. In addition, the contest provided parents, community leaders, local feeder- schools (middle/elementary) in the Dominion area with an environment that is safe, creative, and enjoyed by everyone who attends. Furthermore, this promotional experience provided useful and challenging DECA opportunities for students in marketing courses.
