Tier 1 Core Components and Tier 2 & 3 Interventions for Grades 1-2 Tier 1: Core Components - Literacy 1. Balanced Literacy Model Balanced Literacy is a comprehensive program of language arts acquisition. It contains all of the components necessary for students to master written and oral communication. Balanced literacy begins with creating a genuine appreciation for good literature. It includes teaching phonics, grammar skills, reading and comprehension strategies, and writing forms and skills. Direct and indirect reading instruction, shared reading, and independent reading experiences must be provided. Balanced Literacy includes:  Reading Aloud (Modeled Reading)  Shared Reading  Guided Reading  Independent Reading 2.

Making Meaning The Making Meaning program explicitly teaches comprehension strategies—introducing them in the grades where they are developmentally appropriate. (Retelling, Using Schema/Making Connections, Visualizing, Wondering/Questioning, Making Inferences, Determining Important Ideas, Understanding Text Structure, Summarizing, and Synthesizing)

3. Being a Writer Based on a foundation of drawing, oral language, and phonics, teachers in primary grades model writing using letter-sound relationships. Being a Writer uses high-quality trade books for genre immersion and author studies along with easy-to-teach mini-lessons to reinforce the skills and conventions taught in the program. Writing instruction, regular community-building elements, and guided partner work are integrated to develop in students a sense of autonomy, belonging, and competence. 4.

Waterford Early Learning Waterford Early Learning provides a complete digital language arts program. Systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, text comprehension, vocabulary, print concepts, readiness skills, writing, and oral fluency provide a comprehensive foundation for reading. Used with students in grade one.

5. Successmaker Successmaker instructional software provides elementary learners with adaptive, personalized paths for mastery of essential reading concepts and delivers outcome based data to inform educational decision making. Used with students in grade two.

6. Comprehension Toolkit The Comprehension Toolkit focuses on reading, writing, talking, listening, and investigating, to deepen understanding of nonfiction texts with a focus on strategic thinking. The teaching and learning focus is on comprehension instruction including monitoring comprehension, activating and connecting to background knowledge, asking questions, inferring meaning, determining importance, summarizing and synthesizing.

7. Wilson Fundations Wilson Fundations is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom. The Fundations program is based upon the Wilson Reading System principles and serves as a prevention program to help reduce reading and spelling failure. It is also being used for our handwriting instruction in first grade.

8. Zaner Bloser Handwriting This program provides developmentally appropriate handwriting instruction delivered in a consistent, ongoing manner which supports early reading and writing development through print awareness and improved letter recognition. Strengthens students’ ability to self-regulate, encourages ongoing literacy growth to improve written communications, and reduce the need for handwriting-related interventions. Used for cursive writing instruction in second grade.

Tier 1: Core Components - Mathematics 1. envision Math The enVision Math program includes daily problem-based interactive math learning followed by visual learning strategies which deepen conceptual understanding by making meaningful connections for students and delivering strong, sequential visual/verbal connections through the visual learning bridge in every lesson. Ongoing diagnosis and intervention, along with daily data-driven differentiation, ensure that enVision Math gives every student the opportunity to succeed.

2. VMath Live VMath Live is an on-line math resource where students can practice math skills, prepare for high-stakes tests, and play in real-time competitions of skills and speed.

3. Sumdog Sumdog is an on-line math resource used to motivate students by providing them with math games which teachers can then use to monitor student accuracy, effort, and speed at each skill. Reports provided assist teachers in tailoring the program to meet student needs. The skills are aligned to the CCSS.

4. Rocket Math Rocket Math is a daily, paper and pencil program used to help with automaticity of math facts. Kindergarten, first, second, and third grades have a specific fact fluency standard to master.

Tier 2: Interventions - Literacy 1. Explode the Code Based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, this multisensory program geared to improving literacy with direct, systematic, phonics instruction builds the essential literacy skills needed for reading success: phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and spelling.

2. Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System is a small-group, supplementary intervention program designed to be used with small groups of young children who need intensive support to achieve grade-level competency. Participants include low-achieving children who are not receiving another supplementary intervention. English language learners can also benefit from LLI. Each LLI lesson provides specific suggestions for supporting English language learners.

3. Quick Reads QuickReads are short texts designed to be read quickly and with meaning. These texts support automaticity with the high-frequency words and phonics/syllabic patterns needed to be a successful reader at a particular grade level. Additionally, with topics in the subject areas of social studies and science, texts in the QuickReads program encourage meaning and comprehension.

Scott Foresman My Sidewalks on Reading Street My Sidewalks is an intensive reading intervention program that accelerates the reading development of struggling students by providing systematic and explicit instruction that focuses on key comprehension skills: Compare and Contrast, Draw Conclusions, Main Idea and Supporting Details, and Sequence. My Sidewalks on Reading Street helps teach strategies good readers use before, during, and after reading.

6. Phonics for Reading Phonics for Reading supports students who struggle with reading comprehension because they have difficulty with decoding. Phonics for Reading builds phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding, and fluency skills to strengthen reading comprehension.

7. Recipe for Reading Orton-Gillingham influenced, this comprehensive, multisensory, phonics-based reading program presents a skill sequence and lesson structure designed for beginning, at-risk, or struggling readers. Recipe for Reading addresses the following skills: consonant sounds, digraphs, consonant blends, diphthongs, spelling rules, short vowels, long vowels, inflectional endings, and suffixes.

9. Words Their Way Words Their Way is a developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program intended to be a part of a balanced literacy plan that includes fluency, comprehension, and writing.

10. Houghton-Mifflin Early Success A research-based reading intervention program for students who need extra support to become proficient, grade-level readers, Early Success provides explicit, direct instruction in a three part lesson plan: Rereading for Fluency, Reading the Books of the Week, and Working with Words/Writing Sentences.

Tier 2: Interventions - Mathematics 1. enVision Math Interventions The enVision Math program includes daily problem-based interactive math learning followed by visual learning strategies which deepen conceptual understanding by making meaningful connections for students and delivering strong, sequential visual/verbal connections through the visual learning bridge in every lesson. Orton-Gillingham The Orton-Gillingham instructional approach is primarily intended for use with students whose difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing is typically associated with dyslexia. This approach is language-based, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible to the needs of the individual.

4. Focus Math Focus Math identifies at-risk students early and accelerates their learning with instruction that is intensive, balanced, and individualized. All grade levels consist of three units, each built around a specific NCTM Focal Point.
