POTENTATE’S MESSAGE TOM NICKENS, POTENTATE 2016 SOOOOOO SORRY…….. If you missed the February Stated Meeting - it was fantastic fun! Sports night for kids and adults was exciting and competitively exhilarating. There were six (6) enjoyable games. Human foosball was a real kick – this version had no one flipping around-and-around. Some mentionable goalies were Bill Beckman, A.J. and then there was Lew. On the Lew-sers team Lew did end up landing on his keester. The Beach Chair Volleyball with a big beach ball was great. Besides Gene Olsen presenting a nice program at the beginning he made a great team with Donna as she set the beach ball and Gene came in with the spike! The other games nerf ball basketball, archery and baseball were also great fun. The team names were interesting… Depends, Lil Dickens. Everyone enjoyed the names and came up with hilarious cheers. So, thank you Blaine Nickens, Aide 2016 for February’s successful Stated Meeting. March Meeting was a SWEETHEARTS CRUISE by 2016 Aides Dan and Sue Leonard. Our Widows were invited. The evening was a glorious cruise theme with a wonderful meal and soothing and gentle activities for all. Hope you enjoyed your yachting, cruising and traveling for the night was created especially for you and your date. April’s Meeting is MOVIE NIGHT, directed by 2016 Aides Jeff and Linda Potts. It will be stupendous at the Imperial session, and we have about fifteen (15) going now. Stay an extra day and go to Disney World! Ben Ali Shrine – Canada Ben Ali Shrine is going to Vancouver and Victoria Island August 17 thru 22. You will see a foreign country right next to our border. brother Nobles and our Shrine Ladies. Ben Ali Shrine - Yosemite National Park Let’s go see what our State of California Republic, led by the grizzly bears showed President Teddy Roosevelt. When John Muir gave the President the tour of the Valley and he saw the majestic wonders the great architect invested Yosemite with he was impressed. LIFE’S SHORT.EAT DESSERT FIRST Ann Ward Greetings and salutations, from your Dessert Loving Duo, Debbie Clark and Me. We wish everyone a Happy Easter and hope you have a wonderful day. Poor Debbie, the one day we could get together, she came down with whatever was going around, so I ask Sharon Morse and Carolyn Radavice if they could have lunch with me. Fortunately for me they said they could.

Sharon Morse, Ann Ward, Carolyn Radavice

We went to Casa Garden Restaurant on 2760 Sutterville Road, Sacramento. Telephone (916) 452-2809. Not only is the food good, but the restaurant provides ongoing financial support to the Sacramento Children’s Home. Members of the Los Ninos Service League work in the dining room and the gardens. The Restaurant has a lunch menu that changes weekly and also has a special menu option for prearranged weeknight dinners and weekend events. There is ample free off street parking, so parking is not a problem. All three of us chose the RosemaryCrusted Turkey Breast marinated with fresh rosemary and garlic and then slow-roasted and served with whipped garlic potatoes and a chef’s choice salad. The lunch was accompanied by bread and your choice of coffee, tea and water. Wine is extra. It was very, very good! But then I’ve never had a bad meal there. For dessert we had a Key Lime Pound Cake that made the ole taste buds sit up and sing. From our table we could look out on a deck and greenery. All in all it was a very relaxing afternoon and lunch. If you go we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Until next time take care and remember LIFE’S SHORT……EAT DESSERT FIRST!!

KEYSTONE COP PATROL John Timblin, Secretary What do you write about when you haven’t done anything in awhile? I guess if you can’t talk about what you did you talk about what you’re gonna do. With this being a presidential election year I am sure you are up to your gills listening to all the politicians far and wide tell you what they are gonna do. Well I’m going to do the same thing with one exception. I’m going to tell you the truth and it will happen. Now let’s move on to an “event we are gonna do”. I’m talking about the St. Patricks Day Parade in Old Sacramento. There was a bit of confusion on the proper procedure for entering the parade this year. While a couple of us were scratching our heads Wally Clark nailed it. He not only entered the parade for himself with his fire engine but got the authorization from the parade committee to include other Shrine Units and Clubs. Well one of the Units he invited was the Keystone Cops and you better believe it, we’ll be there with bells on, I mean with green on. When I mentioned earlier about the great working relationship that Shiners have amongst them-

5

selves, this is a prime example of that relationship in action. Thank you Wally, we will be right behind you. Join us at our monthly meeting to learn a little more about our Unit. We meet the last Tuesday of the month. We meet at the Hart House with dinner around 6 p.m. followed with a meeting at 7 p.m. Contact me for details at (916) 300-0699 or [email protected] . Hope you can make it.

not yet been established. Please join us on the fourth Tuesday of any month (except July and August) at Ben Ali Activity Center. Be our guest for dinner at 6 p.m. and Meeting at 7 p.m. MOTOR ESCORT Kenneth Lopez - 1st Lt. This is Ken, with Motor Escort, leading the pack. I’m happy to announce that Motor Escort is planning some fun activities for our unit and others to participate in. Our goal here is to increase membership and having fun doing so. At this time it’s all in the planning stage, with our goal of holding our 1st Annual Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament in May. I’m not bluffing, nor am I holding a pair of Jokers.Or am I? If your Unit or Club wishes to be invited (and you are invited) , plea se conta ct me via e- mail: ([email protected]) to be kept informed. Until next time, be careful and safe. LEGION OF HONOR Commander Ralph Sahagun Several people have asked: What is the Legion of Honor? What do they do? What does it take to become a member? What does it cost to become a member? It would be difficult to cover this subject in one Newsletter so we’ll cover a little bit each month. The Legion of Honor is an International Organization composed of 150 Shrine units located in USA, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Philippines and Puerto Rico. A member must be a Mason and a Shriner who has served or is still serving in the Armed Services. Our objective is to foster the Spirit of Patriotism, Love of our Country and Flag. The initiation fee for Ben Ali L.O.H. is Thirty dollars and the annual dues are a mere Twenty Dollars. All Veterans and Active Service Personnel should consider it an honor to belong to this organization. Contact Phil Thulander 530-626-8160 or any member of L.O.H. for an Application. Check next month’s Newsletter for more information about the Legion of Honor. One correction to last Month’s Newsletter – The Ben Ali L.O.H. PV will still be held on July 24 but the location has

The Ben Ali Shrine Mounted Patrol would like to invite all past members and those who want to participate, to contact Gary Wisner at [email protected], or fax to (209) 368-7778, or mail to 621 S. Ham Lane, Suite A, Lodi, CA 95242. Our past experiences as a Mounted Patrol has included both horses and mules, and all animals are welcome. Our goal is to participate in as many events as possible, and to provoke the smiles on the faces of both children and adults that animals can uniquely accomplish. Both Shriners and Master Masons may participate, and we hope to attract as many members as possible, with the goal of having as much fun as possible. TEHAMA COUNTY SHRINE CLUB Dean Cofer The Tehama County Shrine Club is pleased to announce that our 7 th Annual Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Wilcox Oaks Golf Club in Red Bluff. Shriners, Masons and other golfers are encouraged to come to Tehama County in September and enjoy playing some golf for a good cause. Our annual golf tournament helps us help Shriners Hospitals for Children. The TCSC Ladies have scheduled their 6th Annual Bowling Tournament for Sunday, October 23 rd at Corning’s Java Lanes. Please mark your calendars and come to Corning to bowl a few games. The proceeds of the Ladies Tournament have traditionally donated the proceeds of the tournament to the Sacramento Shriners Hospital’s Transportation Fund. Applications and further information on the two tournaments shown above will be made available in the near future. The TCSC recently unveiled our new Facebook page. We cordially invite you to view and “like” our FB page. Our page – Tehama County Shrine Club – can be found on Facebook.

TOMMYKNOCKERS SHRINE CLUB Al Schafer Secretary Lynton Daniel and Past President George Harper coordinated with local School Nurses and our Sierra Nevada (Dignity Health) Memorial Hospital to host a Screening Clinic for children who might benefit from referral. An hour-long interview on radio station KNCO about the Screening Clinic, as well as Masonry, Shriners and our NC Hospital for Children was aired on Thursday, February 25. Interviewed by News Director, Tom Fitzsimmons, were Nobles George Harper, Lynton Daniel and Al Schafer. The following week, a 20-minute Health segment also announced the event. The Clinic was held on Saturday, March 5 at SNMH from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’ll share some stories about our experiences event next month.

To bolster our membership and involve some younger Masons, we’re planning a SIN. Now that we have your attention, that stands for Shrine Information Night for our local brothers. It’s an informal evening get-together to discuss Shrine, support for our Hospital, and involvement with our local Masonic organizations. We hope to send a candidate to Cold Sands on April 2. Tommyknockers are also discussing a couple of FUNdraising events. We’ve sent a query to the Classic Car and Motorcycle Clubs about their participation in a “Riddle Rally” in the Foothills. Drivers and partners will identify certain landmarks along our back-roads, ending with a Spaghetti Feed at a reserved cafe along Highway 49. We’ll invite all Nobles to this join our amusing 1-1/2 hour tour. WRECKING CREW Chris Chediak, President The Wrecking Crew has announced that it is reinstituting its internationally famous Advanced Second Section Training weekend. This summer we will be hold this “advanced training” in Homewood, California and have secured a training location at a home on the lake with a beach, dock and boats available for this rigorous training session. It should be a very educational weekend. Any veterans interested in participating should contact Chris Chediak or any regular Crew member for more details. The Crew also welcomes its newest probation- member Dario Gomez, and welcomes back regular member Scott Colvin. The Wrecking Crew monthly meetings will

continue to be held at the Cabrillo Club, the first Monday of the month through April. After that we will be moving to the Hart House or the picnic area. Board meetings will be at the Hart House. PURVEYORS Stan Solid, Secretary / Treasurer What are the Purveyors, you ask. Well, we are the group who cooks for the Temple at stated meetings and other gatherings. Last year the kitchen got a major upgrade which made cooking a lot more fun. We also installed a new dishwasher that does a great job. Now for the best part we have installed a new double stack convection oven to better serve the Nobles. So may question is this, What’s keeping you from joining us and having some fun cooking? Our fearless leader Mario Balbiani will certainly have a spot for you. Give him a shout at [email protected]. SHRINERS HOSPITAL NEWS Northern California Shriners Hospital Joins Institute for Pediatric Innovation Hospital Committed to Advancing Care through Collaboration In keeping with its commitment to advance pediatric care through technology and innovation, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Northern California has joined the Institute for Pediatric Innovation (IPI), a national consortium dedicated to improving pediatric healthcare by bringing together key partners. The Northern California Shriners Hospital is one of four well-respected children’s hospitals in the United States invited to participate in the consortium. Other members of the IPI Pediatric Hospital Consortium include: · Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, CA; · Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH; and · Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX These three pediatric centers pioneered a clinical innovation catalyst program last year. The group focused on innovations related to the care of pressure ulcers, and began to scout for other innovative hospitals to join. The Northern California Shriners Hospital was invited to participate in a project to assess pressure mapping alternatives with the original three IPI member hospitals. As IPI and Shriners Hospital leadership learned more about each other, it became clear that the commitment to quality and innovation at the Northern California Shriners Hospital made it a great match with the other leading centers.
