Nathan, Robles win Wernher

A match made in Vegas When someone asks Herman Louie how he met his wife, Ming, he routinely quips, “I picked her up at the partnership desk in Las Vegas.” Herman said that people initially think the worst of him – that is, until he clarifies that it was a bridge partnership desk in 1985. Alhough Ming and Herman lived about 10 miles apart in northern Virginia, it took a series of events to bring them together on the other side of the country. Ming’s mother was close friends with Helen Utegaard, an ACBL Grand Life Master and WBF World Master. Utegaard called Ming her “adopted daughter.” In 1985, Utegaard invited Ming to stay with her at the Las Vegas NABC. After Utegaard finished playing bridge, they planned to take a vacation. Ming loved bridge but was not an active continued on page 10

Combining two 58% games in the final of the Wernher Open Pairs with a solid carryover from the qualifying round, Marc Nathan and Jose Robles won the four-session contest by a third of a board. Nathan, of New York City, and Robles, of Santiago, Chile, were playing together in an NABC event for the first time, but they know each other very well. Nathan’s son, expert Kevin Bathurst, is married to Robles’s daughter, Catalina. It was the second NABC title for Nathan, but the first for Robles. The winners’ four-session total was 2924.14 (top was 91). In second with 2886.88, was the Italian duo of Giuseppe Failla and Dario Attanasio.

Top seeds hammered in Spingold Rd. 3

Wagar final: China Red vs. Baker

A slew of higher-ranked teams was defeated by their lower-ranked counterparts in yesterday’s Spingold action. The top-seeded defending champions from Poland, who added Reese Milner and captain Hemant Lall to this year’s lineup, were taken out by Pan China Red, the No. 32 seed led by Ze Jun Zhuang, 117-106. Marty Fleisher’s team, the No. 3 seed, was manhandled by Martin Harris’s squad (the No. 30 seed) 141-77. Mark Gordon and company (No. 5) were stunned by a late rally from Winthrop Allegaert’s team, the original No. 33 seed. Down 40 IMPs after three quarters, Allegaert rallied to win the match 109-102. Jimmy Cayne’s team (No. 7) trailed the entire match against the original No. 35 seed led by John McAllister. The McAllister team won 173-117. John Diamond, the No. 11 seed, was shown the door by Rose Meltzer’s squad, 136-127.

WBF President encouraged by youth bridge developments As the 7th Youth NABC begins today, World Bridge Federation President Gianarrigo Rona is looking on in appreciation. He loves to see young people playing bridge. “Finally,” he says, “we are completely on the same line.” Rona is referring to the 100-plus bridge federations around the world. “They finally understand they must promote youth bridge.” Rona took over as WBF president at the end of the World Bridge Series tournament in 2010, and he has kept track of all membership trends as he pushes bridge officials to engage more young people. Year to year, he says, “If we check the numbers, we are more or less in the same place. What is important is a big increase in youth bridge, especially for kids in school. We have to invest in this.”

The president is heartened to note that next month’s World Youth Team Championships in Istanbul – to which the U.S. is sending five teams – has nearly 70 teams, including eight players 14 and younger who were invited. (For photos of the U.S. teams, see page 5.) Rona says it’s important to introduce players to bridge at a young age. In Italy, the Italian Bridge Federation began its bridge-in-schools program 15 years ago. The program was developed with the country’s Ministry of Education, and the Italian Bridge Federation is now working with universities to get bridge into those institutions. “The movement has gained momentum,” Rona says. Bridge has many selling points for young people, Rona says. “It is a sport with a comparatively low cost and there are many elements to help young people’s growth and continued on page 5

In the final round of the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams, China Red, captained by Wenfei Wang, faces the squad captained by Lynn Baker. In the semifinal round, China Red prevailed when Beijing Huayjan, led by Sun Ming, withdrew after three rounds. China Red was leading 138-93. In the opposite bracket, the Baker team defeated China Blue, captained by Yanhong Wang, 145-113.

Mini-Spingold begins QF play

Eight squads remain in the Mini-Spingold I (0-5000) KO Teams. Many of yesterday’s matches featured lopsided results, but two of the contests were very close. Matt Leung’s squad, the No. 9 seed, defeated Debbie Benner’s team, the No. 8 seed, by a single IMP, 113-112. Michael Fleisher’s team (the No. 14 seed) also won narrowly over Norman Schwartz’s squad, 126-121.

Micro matches: Ose vs. Lusk, Chokriwala vs. Hill

The semifinal round of the Mini-Spingold II (0-1500) KO Teams will feature contests between squads captained by Mary Ose and Jon Lusk in one bracket, and Om Chokriwala and Richard Hill in the other.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS Takeout doubles – part 1 By Brent Manley

TD Scott Humphrey was working a knockout at a Texas tournament and was moving from table to table, checking to see who was sitting out on the five- and six-person teams. At one table, he asked who was sitting out and a woman said, “No one.” Humphrey checked the entry again and asked, “You do have five members on your team, right?” The answer was yes, so Humphrey said, “So I think you will agree that one of you must be sitting out.” The snappy response was, “No – she’s not even in the building.” I am often surprised when I sit down against certain players and take part in an auction like this: West North East South Me 1♥ Dbl 2♥ 2♠ Pass 2NT All Pass The contract goes down two or three, sometimes doubled, and when I check the board later, I find out that West made a takeout double with a hand like this: ♠J 5 ♥Q 9 2 ♦A K 4 3 ♣K J 7 6 If I ask further, I will be told, “But I had 14 points!” No, no, no! I see this kind of thing much more often among newer players than I should, and there’s no reason for it. This topic is important for newer players to discuss because some have the mistaken notion that any opening hand qualifies for a takeout double in second seat. I often preach about the importance disciplined bidding, and that is especially true for takeout doubles. With two exceptions, when you make a takeout double of an opening bid at the one level, you should have roughly an opening hand and at least three-card support for the unbid suits. This is an excellent double of a 1♥ opener: ♠Q J 6 5 ♥A 4 ♦K Q 8 ♣J 10 9 6 Although it contains only 11 high-card points, this one also qualifies. ♠A 10 7 6 ♥5 ♦A 9 7 3 ♣K 10 9 8 You have excellent support for any suit partner might bid.

Thinking bridge By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: East ♠ K J 10 7 Vul: Both ♥ K Q 10 5 ♦KQ ♣984 ♠ 8 2 ♥ 9 3 2 ♦ 9 7 6 5 3 ♣ 7 5 2 ♠A653 ♥A84 ♦ A J 10 ♣ 10 6 3 West North Pass 2♣ Pass 4♠

♠Q94 ♥J76 ♦842 ♣AKQJ

East 1♣ Pass All Pass

South Dbl 2♠

Consider the first example hand again ♠J 5 ♥Q 9 2 ♦A K 4 3 ♣K J 7 6 Suppose the bidding goes 1♥ and you make a disciplined pass. Your left-hand opponent bids 1♠, partner passes and RHO rebids 2♥ or raises to 2♠. Now you have a perfect takeout double with good four-card support for the unbid suits. Passing initially does not mean you are shut out of the auction – and there’s another consideration. Say you pass 1♥ as you should and hear LHO bid 2♦. Now you will be mentally congratulating yourself for staying out of the auction. If RHO has 12 HCP and LHO has at least 10 (more if 2♦ is forcing to game), your partner is going to be broke or close to it. So, you ask, what are the exceptions to the unbid suit requirement? Consider this hand: ♠A K Q 10 9 8 ♥A ♦K Q 10 4 ♣9 8 If RHO opens 1♥ and you bid 1♠, there’s a danger you will miss game. Say your LHO passes and partner is looking at ♠J 5 ♥6 5 4 2 ♦A 5 ♣10 6 4 3 2. With this hand, partner has nothing to say with only 5 HCP and only two spades. If 1♠ is passed out, you will have missed a game. Start with double and when partner bids 2♣, bid 2♠ to show your powerhouse. With an ace and a spade honor in support, partner should at least raise to 3♠. The other exception occurs when you have a balanced hand outside the range of the 1NT overcall, which usually shows 15-17 and a Opening lead: ♣2. Bidding commentary: North’s 2♣ response to partner’s takeout double is the strongest he could make. It typically shows 12 or more highcard points and usually results in a game contract, as in the diagram. There is an exception to the 12-point rule for making a cuebid in response to a takeout double. It occurs when responder has two four-card majors and 9-11 HCP. Responder (also known as “advancer”) cuebids, but when partner bids a major, advancer makes an invitational raise to the three level. This bid is not forcing. Lead commentary: When leading partner’s unsupported suit, lead low from any three or four cards lacking the ace or an honor sequence. Leading high indicates shortness. Defensive commentary: As West, it doesn’t look at all as if you are going to be the hero on this hand, but you are! Patience. Further defensive commentary: As East,

stopper in the suit that was opened. If you have 18-19 balanced with a stopper, you must double first and then bid notrump. This hand qualifies for a double of a 1♥ opening, followed by a notrump bid at the second turn: ♠A K J ♥K Q 10 ♦A Q 4 3 ♣10 9 8 7 You have too much high-card strength to overcall 1NT, a double stopper in hearts and a balanced hand. Important: Discuss with partner whether your regular 1NT system is on in this auction.

after cashing three clubs, you should realize that South must have the missing three aces to justify the vulnerable takeout double. Furthermore, given the strength of the dummy, South knows you must have the ♠Q to have an opening bid. Knowing that, do you have any chance to defeat this contract? Yes! When there are no tricks coming for the side suits, think ruff-sluff. If you lead a fourth club and partner has the ♠8 and plays it, dummy will overruff with the 10. But suddenly your ♠Q 9 4 will provide a certain trump trick. Your 9 has been promoted to the setting trick. All you have to do is cover the jack if it is led. Further defensive Commentary: You see, West, you were the hero as long as you stuck in that ♠8 at trick four. Instead of being discouraged at holding a bad hand, remain alert for a chance to help partner defeat the contract.

Partscore triumph

TOURNAMENT APPEALS

By Phillip Alder

Doug Doub and Frank Merblum won the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs. On this deal from that event, Doub was the declarer (hands rotated): Dlr: South ♠AK62 Vul: None ♥ K 10 ♦ 10 6 5 ♣Q932 ♠ J 9 7 ♠ Q 10 8 ♥ Q J 8 4 2 ♥93 ♦ 8 ♦A932 ♣ A K 8 5 ♣ J 10 7 6 ♠543 ♥A765 ♦KQJ74 ♣4 West North East South Merblum Doub Pass 1♥ Dbl 1♠ (1) 3♦ All Pass (1) The equivalent of a 1NT response. West led the ♣A, then shifted to the ♥Q. Doub won with dummy’s ♥K, played a diamond to his king (noting West’s 8), cashed the ♥A and ruffed a heart with dummy’s ♦10. East discarded a club. Now declarer played a diamond to his 7 and continued with the ♦Q. East won and erred by returning the ♣J. South discarded his heart loser on this trick and a moment later pitched his spade loser on the established ♣Q to come home with an overtrick. Plus 130 was worth 40 matchpoints out of 51. Plus 110 would have garnered only 23. Did you spot declarer’s error? If he was going to finesse his ♦7, he should have played his ♦4 under dummy’s ♦6. Then, when he won the trick, he could have ruffed a club in his hand, crossed to dummy’s ♠K, ruffed another club, returned to dummy in spades and scored his last trump en passant by leading dummy’s fourth club.

James Proctor Hawkins Jr. (1937-2014)

Proctor Hawkins, a Platinum Life Master of Las Vegas with more than 11,000 masterpoints, died June 22. Hawkins won dozens of regional contests, and his best nationallevel finish was second place in the 1969 Senior and Advanced Senior Master Pairs. Longtime friend and partner George Kovarik of Las Vegas said, “There was only one Proctor. He lived life to the fullest, and he did what he wanted to do.” Reflecting on Hawkins’s preference for brutally simple methods, Kovarik said, “Proctor was one of the last of a breed. He insisted on Blackwood, twoway Stayman, fourth-best leads and suit-preference signals, but only when painfully obvious.” Born in a small town in Missouri, Hawkins’s father, James, was a banker. The younger Hawkins followed in his father’s footsteps with a career in finance as a “sports adviser.” Hawkins is survived by his life partner of many years, Barbara “Bobbi” Hayes.

Correction

In yesterday’s story about the Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams, it was incorrectly reported that the winner of the contest, the squad captained by Stephen McConnell, defeated the Phillip Becker team in the last round to win the event. McConnell actually defeated a different squad in the final round by a wide enough margin to win the event. Becker narrowly defeated the James Griffin squad in the final round but because of carryover, Griffin finished second in the event and Becker was third.

the circumstances of the auction with three other senior directors and the DIC of the event, as well as two other players of a similar skill level to NorthSouth. Four of the six interviewed would have doubled or bid with the South hand. The director ruled that the table result stood, 4♠ by West, NorthSouth minus 450. The Appeal: East-West appealed the ruling. Because only East appeared at the hearing, the Appeals Committee ruled based on the testimony of East and the director that it was established at the table that there was a fast pass by North of 4♠, even though West had used the stop card. This constituted UI for South. The Decision: The Appeals Committee found that the fast pass demonstrably suggested that pass would likely be more successful than bidding on. Therefore, the committee needed to determine whether there was any logical alternative to pass. Unfortunately, the committee did not know the skill level of North-South. The committee, however, thought that enough players would seriously consider that double was a logical alternative, a finding in accord with the polled panel. East presented evidence that out of 104 scores, there were approximately 12 scores of plus 590 or plus 690 for East-West and a few 5♦ contracts for North-South. The committee further determined that if South doubles, North would likely pass. There was no reason to change the actual number of tricks taken. Accordingly, the result was changed to 4♠ doubled by West, making five, East-West plus 690 and North-South minus 690. education. Also, it is exciting for the kids who like to compete, and they, like the adults, learn that when you start to think you know everything you realize you don’t know anything.” While in Las Vegas for the Summer NABC, Rona took the opportunity to invite ACBL members to the 14th Red Bull World Bridge Series in Sanya, China, Oct. 10-25. It’s an open world championship, which means any player in good standing with his or her national bridge federation can play. Events are transnational, meaning pairs and teams can be made up of players from different countries. Sanya, on the island of Hainan, is accessible from many points in Asia, notably Hong Kong and Beijing. “The hotels are marvelous,” Rona says, including Marriott, Sheraton and MGM Grand and others from well-known chains. In many ways, he says, Sanya is like Bali, where 2013 world championships took place. Sanya is often referred to as the “Oriental Hawaii.” Pre-registration for the Sanya tournament closes at the end of September, but Rona advises players to register by mid-September to be sure of securing entries and hotel accommodations.

My daughter: platinum point winner By Eric Robinson

Twenty-one-year old Emily Robinson learned to play bridge last year when she took Eddie Wold’s introductory bridge class (for one credit) at Rice University in Houston. She had accumulated about 6 masterpoints in club games, and was planning to kibitz me in the Truscott/USPC l Senior Swiss Teams that began on Monday. Shortly after the first match started, a director made an announcement asking if any kibitzer could fill in for a few boards for a missing player. Emily immediately volunteered, and despite having only 30 seconds to discuss their system, her team won their first match! Her team lost their second match and had to be disqualified from continuing play when the missing player never showed, Emily earned her first platinum master points. She will, of course, have to wait 39 years to play in her next Senior event.  Emily just graduated from Rice with a degree in decision sciences and will soon move to France for graduate school. She has connected with young French star Thomas Bessis, who promised to introduce her to some players in his country.

Slow Play

Slow play, as opposed to careful or thoughtful play, is discourteous to your opponents — and to all other competitors as well. Players and pairs who take more than their allotted time are subject to penalty. In general, pairs who are rarely late will be warned while pairs who are habitually tardy and/or pay no attention to time limits will be penalized.

Masterpoint disclaimer

Scores as reported in the Daily Bulletin are subject to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change.

player and classified herself as “Flight D” at the time. Ming was also interested in playing at the tournament and considered hiring a full-time player. But when she arrived in Las Vegas, she figured she should visit the partnership desk first. Herman played regularly at clubs in the Washington DC area. He was originally scheduled to play in the 1985 NABC with Steve Chang. When Chang’s mother became ill, he had to bow out of the tournament. So Herman visited the partnership desk and met Ming. They hit it off right away and decided to give the bridge pairing a chance. Their first two days brought good results at the table. The next day, they decided to take the day off from bridge and tour the Hoover Dam. Herman called Ming, who was staying in Utegaard’s room, at 8:45 in the morning to see if she was ready. The noise woke Utegaard, who was going to play in the Spingold that day. Needing to rest before the game, Utegaard snapped at Herman, “You must be with the enemy!” After trekking out to the Hoover Dam, they spent more time away from the table, taking in shows and going on other tours. Ming later called her mother and recounted her experiences with Herman. According to Ming, her mother said, “I think you’re going to get married.” Her mother also told her, “You better marry a bridge player.” Herman wasted no time in making a proposal to Ming, but it wasn’t about getting married. He asked her, “Would you like to be a Life Master?” He then confidently claimed, “I can make you a Life Master.” Less than a year later, he delivered on his promise when Ming earned her gold card. Ming and Herman married in 1988. They joked that Ming becoming a Life Master was a precondition for the union. Ming and Herman are now Gold Life Masters and currently reside in Henderson NV. Both are retired. Ming was a special education school teacher. Herman worked at the Defense Department. The Louies have two children, Michael and Jennifer. The former is an economics professor and the latter is an architect. Ming and Herman are also expecting to be grandparents in October. Their kids never took up bridge, but Ming and Herman are determined to teach their grandchildren to play. The Louies love meeting new people and have traveled extensively. But those vacations are not escapes from bridge. Ming said, “Whenever we travel, we try to find a local bridge game.” They have fulfilled every item on their bucket list except one: winning an NABC event. They have attended numerous NABCs, including tournaments in Dallas, Phoenix, Toronto, San Francisco, New York, New Orleans, Atlanta and Miami. Ming and Herman keep shooting for that elusive victory. Through Tuesday at the 2014 Summer NABC, they had won more than 50 masterpoints. They finished 14th in the Bruce 0-5000 LM Pairs. On Tuesday, Ming and Herman won the Open Swiss Teams, along with teammates Kathie Angione and John Peter Lagodimos of Chula Vista CA. They are excited to play in the inaugural 0-10,000 Mixed Swiss Teams commencing on Saturday. Bridge has been an important part of the Louies’ life since they met in 1985. Herman said, “Bridge was the reason we got together and stayed together.” But they are determined not to make bridge the biggest thing in their life. Their family and their health come first. Ming said, “We’re not going to fight over 52 cards.” The dog in the picture is the Louies’ trusty companion named Ping Pong. He is a registered service dog able to smell chemical changes and alert the Louies in the event of a medical emergency. Ping Pong travels with Ming and Herman to bridge tournaments and other destinations.

New age requirement for Senior events

The definition of a Senior (for the purpose of Senior events, tournaments, special games, etc.) has matured — from 55 to 60 years old. Those ‘tweeners who previously qualified as Seniors and who have been magically rejuvenated are still eligible. If you were born before Jan. 1, 1959, you’re still a Senior for the purposes of playing in any ACBL Senior event.

2014 Youth NABC

Welcome, players

Editor: Brent Manley

We are glad you’re here

Welcome to Las Vegas and to the 2014 Youth NABC! Las Vegas is a unique city and we hope you will enjoy all that it offers. Since 2008, the Youth NABC has been the event that has allowed young players to meet, play and make lifelong friendships. Our team of ACBL staff and volunteers has everything set for you to begin today. It will be a fun-filled event: three days of food, friends, fun, BRIDGE and perhaps even a slam or two! The YNABC schedule and information is on the facing page. You are the future of ACBL and I can’t wait to meet each of you. Nancy Erickson Las Vegas Youth NABC Chair

By Bryan Delfs

The most important trophy? Each year, players at the Youth NABC are asked to vote for the player they believe best exemplifies sportsmanship: courtesy to partner and the opponents and friendliness even while competing. This trophy is awarded at the closing ceremony of the NABC. Last year, Alec Zhan of Alpharetta GA was chosen by his peers for the coveted award, but the vote was close and could have easily gone to one of the other two finalists: Tanner Hess and Victor Lamoureux.

Finalists for the 2013 Sportsmanship Award: Tanner Hess, Alec Zhan and Victor Lamoureux.

As I look at faces in the crowd, none seem to age so fast as our youth and junior players. Juniors who first played in this event six years ago are now playing in the Collegiate Team Championships. Others have grown, seemingly by several feet since we saw them last. Bridge is truly a game of all ages, and our Youth NABC is great celebration of that. Welcome to Las Vegas. We have plenty of bridge to offer to our youth players, and we are looking forward to sharing the excitement of those who have been practicing all week. A special welcome to our Chinese competitors, who have helped to show their support by participating in this event for multiple years. Our competition this year is generously sponsored by Bridge Base Online, Masterpoint Press, Baron Barclay and Great Game Products. We hope to have a great competition and look forward to seeing you in friendly competition.

Sponsors play big role in Youth NABC success Patty Tucker started the Youth NABC in 2008 and has watched it grow, in no small measure because of the loyalty of the sponsors. Baron Barclay Bridge Supply sponsored the first Open Pairs in the competition limited to players 19 and younger with fewer than 5000 masterpoints. The event has always been the Baron Barclay National Youth Open Pairs. The company, based in Louisville KY, is the world’s largest bridge supply house. Each member of the winning duo in the Baron Barclay National Youth Open Pairs receives a $1000 scholarship from the company. Another company highly involved with bridge books is Toronto-based Master Point Press, whose owners – Ray and Linda Lee – provide a $1000 scholarship for the player chosen by his or her peers for the Sportsmanship Award. MPP is the world’s largest publisher of bridge books. “We sponsor all kinds of things,” said Ray Lee, “and we have felt that we wanted to do something for junior bridge. The game has given us an awful lot and we try to put what we can back into it.”

Great Game Products, represented at the Youth NABC by chief programmer Stephen Smith, donated 150 copies of Bridge Baron 23 and iTunes continued next page

The 7th Youth NABC is sponsored primarily by four sponsors, whose representatives are shown above: Stephen Smith, Great Game Products; Jim Maier, Baron Barclay Bridge Supply; Ray and Linda Lee, Master Point Press, and Fred Gitelman, Bridge Base Online.

The bridge-playing software is among the most popular of its kind and has competed regularly in the Computer-Bridge World Championships at World Bridge Federation tournaments. Great Game Products has been in business since 1985. “We want to promote bridge among everyone,” said Smith, “but especially among young players.” Bridge Baron 23 works with Windows and Mac operating systems. This year’s National Youth Swiss Teams is sponsored by Bridge Base Online, the dominant player in live, online bridge. Founder Fred Gitelman is well known for his philanthropy and contributions to the game, not the least of which was helping to get Microsoft Founder Bill Gates interested in the game. Gitelman is an accomplished player with several North American championships to his credit, plus a world championship – the Rosenblum Cup at the World Bridge Series in Philadelphia in 2010. BBO is providing four $1000 scholarships to the winners of the Swiss teams on the final day of the Youth NABC.

Notice to players

Each player must have an ACBL convention card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

It was a cruel beating that our team took in the second round of the Spingold Knockout Teams. This deal, however, was a near miss that felt especially painful. Dlr: West ♠Q52 Vul: N-S ♥ Q J 10 6 ♦ 10 5 ♣ Q 10 7 4 ♠ A 10 6 3 ♥A52 ♦AKJ6 ♣J8 West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♣ 2♦ Dbl (1) Pass 2NT Pass 3♣ Pass 3♥ Pass 3NT All Pass (1) Hearts. After a friendly diamond lead – the 10 holds in dummy – you play a club to the jack and king. The ♠9 goes to the jack and ace. You lead a second club: 8, 9, 10, low. Now you decide LHO has bid with only the ♦Q and the ♣K – he must have the ♥K. So the ♥Q holds. A diamond to the ace then the ♥A and another heart endplays the defense in this position: ♠Q5 ♥J ♦— ♣Q7 ♠ 2 ♠K87 ♥ 9 ♥— ♦ Q 9 7 ♦— ♣ — ♣A5 ♠ 10 6 3 ♥— ♦KJ ♣— The defenders have two tricks in, and when West plays a spade, you duck in dummy. If East wins his king, he can take only his ♣A. So East ducks. You win, cash the ♦K and exit with the ♦J to force West to give you a stepping stone to the ♥J at trick 13! West had ♠9 2 ♥K 9 7 3 ♦Q 9 7 3 2 ♣K 9. Alas, an accident in the ending turned nine tricks and a good story into eight, and much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Be Scent-sitive!

Some people have an extreme sensitivity to fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances. cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem. The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Convention card reminder

Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical. If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and

may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.
