Rev. Whit Lewis

B I O O N DR. VODDIE T. BAUCHAM, JR. Voddie Baucham has been called an “evangelist to intellectuals.” He is a husband, father, author, pastor, church planter, professor and an apologist. His unique blend of sound biblical exposition and cutting-edge relevance make him one of the most unique and compelling voices in modern evangelical circles. He has rapidly become one of the most sought-after preachers of his generation. Voddie’s journey to Christ and the gospel ministry was anything but usual. He was born in Los Angeles, California and raised by a single mother. He did not hear the gospel until his freshman year in college. It was there that He came to faith in Christ. As a student-athlete at Rice University, Voddie responded to God’s call on his life and entered the gospel ministry. As a result, he left Rice University his senior year to pursue theological training at Houston Baptist University. He graduated from H.B.U.

with a B.A. in Christianity and Sociology. From there he earned a Master’s degree from Southwestern Seminary, and a Doctorate from Southeastern Seminary; and has done additional Post-graduate study at the University of Oxford, England. Dr. Baucham has accepted the position of Dean of the Seminary at African Christian University (ACU) in Lusaka, Zambia. He, his faithful wife, Bridget, and their seven youngest children made the bold move from the heart of Texas to the heart of Africa in August, 2015.

He has authored numerous books, academic journals, and magazine articles. Voddie and his wife Bridget have been married since 1989. They have nine children, and currently live in Spring, TX On a personal note, Voddie is also an accomplished Martial Artist. He took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2012 as an avenue of self-defense training, personal fitness and outreach. However, he began competing and found both a passion and a talent. He has won numerous tournaments and titles, including winning the 2014 Pan American Championship in his division.

What is the Gospel? Last week we began looking at how the Gospel impacts our lives and the need to share this ‘good news’ with those around us.

As a reminder, this is the definition that our International Mission Board uses: The gospel is the good news that the only true God, the just and gracious creator of the universe, has looked upon hopelessly sinful men and women and has sent his Son, God in the flesh, to bear his wrath against sin through his substitutionary death on the cross, and to show his power over sin and death in the resurrection from the grave, so that everyone who turns from their sin and themselves and trusts in Jesus alone as Savior and Lord will be reconciled to God forever.

First, the gospel is about God more than anyone or anything else, and it must be explained in terms of his character. God is holy and just, and he hates everything that is evil. Therefore, God hates our sin, and his justice demands our just condemnation. We deserve his wrath because of who we are and what we have done. Yet, God is a God of mercy, grace, and love. He would have been entirely justified in leaving us to the consequences of our rebellion against him, but he chose to redeem us entirely out of his free and undeserved grace. The character of God is both why we need to be saved and why we have been saved. The gospel is from him, about him, and for his glory. Our gospel presentations should be God -centered, not man-centered.

The above notes are taken from the IMB’s website in a blog post entitled, “This is the Gospel”, by Zane Pratt.
