Jesus Calls, Heals and Exorcizes: Sept 18–Oct. 30

Readings from the gospel of Matthew will lead us to the end of May 2017. The Fall Sundays will identify Jesus of Nazareth who heals, calms an angry sea, exorcizes demonic spirits, eats with outcasts, and through all proclaims the scandalous presence of the inbreaking of God’s kingdom. Today’s gospel breaks into our lives as Jesus’ words proclaim to a military commander who pleads for Jesus to heal his paralyzed servant: “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.”

Lesson 2 Kings 4:32-37

When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. So he went in and closed the door on the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. Then he got up on the bed and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and while he lay bent over him, the flesh of the child became warm. He got down, walked once to and fro in the room, then got up again and bent over him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite woman.” So he called her. When she came to him, he said, “Take your son.” She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground; then she took her son and left. WE INVITE CHILDREN TO DOCK AT THIS TIME Please make sure your child is wearing a nametag with name and grade level. ************* See FRONT OF INSERT for Pickup Locations **************

Anthem Awake the Harp (from The Creation)

Psalm 41:1-3

Read in unison Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. The Lord protects them and preserves them-they are counted among the blessed in the land. He does not give them over to the desire of their foes. The Lord sustains them on their sickbed; And restores them from their bed of illness. 5

Holy Gospel Matthew 8:5-13 All: Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. All: Praise to you, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed 6

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

We believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine and grants us the gift of God’s grace and forgiveness. All are welcome to receive this gift. White grape juice is available upon request. Gluten-free wafers are available at all stations at the front of the Sanctuary.
