THINK QUEST (Team Quiz Competition) THE COMPETITION Teams apply ingenuity, analytical ability, and recall of significant information as they compete in a quiz covering various subject areas. SUBJECT COVERAGE     

Arts and Literature – topics include art appreciation, and Philippine and world literature History and Culture – topics include Philippine and world history, and culture Mathematics – topics include basic math concepts, basic statistics, and algebra Science and Technology – topics include basic concepts in earth science, biology, physics, and chemistry General Information – topics include information on common events that take place in the recent past

THE COMPETING TEAM A team is composed of three (3) entrants enrolled in any STI regular program at any year level. STI schools offering Senior High School may also include only one (1) entrant to complete the lineup. A school’s team lineup may include only one (1) substitute from any STI regular program at any year level. THINK QUEST AUTOMATED SYSTEM The Think Quest Automated System (TQAS) will be used for the conduct of the Think Quest event competition. It has the following features: a. Allows questions in Multiple Choice or Identification formats b. Contains the database of questions, answers, and explanations c. Displays an answer text box or option button along with the question flashed on the teams’ monitors. The text box or option button is automatically disabled/locked once the time for each particular question has elapsed d. Checks answers and records scores automatically e. Allows overriding of scores upon the BOJ’s decision f. Has a built-in timing module g. Records the running score for each round and the cumulative score for all rounds h. Generates results per round and the summary of results Page 1 of 5

GENERAL MECHANICS The competition is divided into three rounds: ONCE AND FOR ALL, DOUBLE THE FUN, and TRIPLE TREAT. The level of difficulty increases as it moves to the next round. In each round, all the teams are given an equal chance to answer all the questions. 





For ONCE AND FOR ALL ROUND, ten (10) questions will be asked. Each question is worth one (1) point. The teams are given ten (10) seconds to answer each item unless specified in the question. For DOUBLE THE FUN ROUND, ten (10) questions will be asked. Each question is worth two (2) points. The teams are given fifteen (15) seconds to answer each item unless specified in the question. For TRIPLE TREAT ROUND, ten (10) questions will be asked. Each question is worth three (3) points. The teams are given twenty (20) seconds to answer each item unless specified in the question.

Set of questions in each round is a combination of any or all of the following:   

KNOWLEDGE TEST determines the teams’ knowledge about significant information on specific subject area. MENTAL TASK necessitates open-minded analysis, logical reasoning, and skillful synthesizing. PERFORMANCE TASK yields tangible evidence as a result of the demonstration of knowledge, understanding, and proficiency.

QUIZ CONTEST MECHANICS Pre-contest 1. Each team is provided with a computer unit installed with the Think Quest Automated System (TQAS). 2. The teams are given approximately 30 minutes to test the assigned computer unit and the TQAS prior to the contest proper. 3. The Quiz Master shall introduce the entrants and members of the Board of Judges (BOJ), and announce that the database of questions in CD format has been installed in the presence of a TNT National Committee representative. 4. The BOJ is provided with a hardcopy of the questions per round sealed in separate envelopes. 5. The entrants are given three (3) trial questions for them to test and get accustomed to the system before the actual competition. 6. A printout of the Think Quest score sheet containing scores in the test round will be routed to the teams for them to sign. This certifies that the assigned computer unit for Page 2 of 5

each team is installed with the system needed for the competition and that the said unit is virus-free, in good and acceptable operational condition, and is suitable for the purposes of the competition. 7. The same copy will be routed to the BOJ to certify that all teams have checked their computer units and system. The accomplished sample score sheet printout will serve as the signal that the competition can start. Contest Proper 1. Questions shall be displayed or projected on a screen and on each team’s monitor. 2. All questions shall be read twice and the timer starts when the Quiz master says “Go”. 3. Answers to questions may be required to be inputted to the TQAS, manually written, or demonstrated within the allotted time. Entrants may answer or perform the task while the question is still being read. These are the conditions for answers that shall be:  Inputted to TQAS: i. Using the provided keyboard and mouse, entrants shall key in their answers in the text box or click on the corresponding option button. ii. For items which require multiple answers, a comma must be used to separate each item. iii. As soon as a team has inputted their answer to a particular question, they should click on the “SUBMIT” button to ensure that the answer is captured by the system. However, if the time has elapsed and the team failed to click on the “SUBMIT” button, the system will disable the answer text box/options and considers all characters keyed in, if any, as the final answer of the team. iv. A member of each team is required to write the team’s answers legibly on the provided clean sheets of paper which will be collected after each round. Note that written answers must be the same with the inputted answers.

In case, the TQAS inputted answer and the manually written answer are not the same, the inputted answer shall be considered as the team’s final answer. Manually written answers will only be checked and accepted by the BOJ when technical problems such as, but not limited to, electricity or network failure arise. Answers with the corresponding correct or wrong mark, as reflected on the answer database, will be displayed on the teams’ respective computer screens.

Manually written: i. Answers that require special characters shall be written manually using the provided clean sheets of paper.

Demonstrated: i. Allotted points will only be given to teams that have successfully finished the task within the specified time limit.

4. Answers with wrong spelling and capitalization are considered incorrect. 5. The BOJ has the authority to override the system on the acceptability of answers. 6. Calculators are not allowed for questions that require computations. Answers that require computations must be written in their simplest form. 7. Any team caught in the act of cheating or any form of dishonesty shall automatically be disqualified. Scoring and Declaration of Winners 1. After each question, the teams are given corresponding points. Accumulated points are the scores for each round. Scoring is done using the computer system and a manual score sheet/score board simultaneously. Scores are flashed on the provided screen. 2. To determine the ranking, scores for the three rounds are accumulated. The three teams with the highest accumulated scores shall be declared as the Champion, 1st Runner-up, and 2nd Runner-up winners. However, if a team got no points, that team will not be included in the ranking. 3. TIE-BREAK  In case of a tie at the end of the last round, tie-breaking question or questions, as the case may be, will be given.  Questions of any difficulty and type will be asked until one team gains an advantage in score over the other.  The first team to gain an advantage in score will be declared the victor of the tie and will merit the corresponding award. THE BOARD OF JUDGES The Board of Judges (BOJ) shall be composed of three (3) members from the public or private sector, academe and/or the industry reputed to have extensive knowledge on the following subject area/s: mathematics, history and culture, arts and literature, science and technology, and general information. The members of the BOJ must be selected with due consideration for their notable track record, strong community reputation, and probity. Their individual prominence and collective authority should significantly enhance the spirit of healthy competition and sense of academic excellence, which the event competitions seek to foster. Minimum Qualifications A member of the Board of Judges must: 1. Be an industry practitioner or academician not currently employed at any STI school; Page 4 of 5

2. Have extensive knowledge of the subject area(s) of competition in which he or she is judging; and 3. Hold a credible and significant position in the institution where he or she belongs. Duties and Responsibilities A member of the Board of Judges must: 1. Be at the competition site 30 minutes prior to start of the Think Quest event competition; 2. Provide the school with a copy of his or her most recent resume for proper recognition; 3. Familiarize oneself with the relevant sections of the TNT General Guidelines as well as this Event Competition Mechanics; 4. Have an understanding of the physical environment of the competition area with special consideration to the school’s available resources; 5. Serve as witness to and arbitrator among parties during the proceedings to settle questions on: a. The qualification or disqualification of the team to compete based on this event competition mechanics. b. Acceptability or unacceptability of entrants’ response – as in cases of disagreements on clarity or interpretation of topics or questions on technicality (compliance or non-compliance with the event competition mechanics). c. Other matters that are not clearly indicated in the TNT General Guidelines or this Event Competition Mechanics. 6. Be willing to provide feedback to the organizers and students for further development of the event competition. FILING OF PROTESTS Only the team captains can file protests to the BOJ during the event competition proper. Protests must be raised immediately before the next question is read. The team captain will then be asked to approach the judges to settle the issue. Once the next question is read, the team captain cannot raise anymore a protest to the preceding question. Controversies and objections will be resolved by the BOJ before the next question is read by the Quiz Master. The decision of the BOJ is final and irrevocable.
