NSBE 5K FUN RUN & WALK

VERSION #2.0 March 2013

#NSBE2013 Are you 5K Ready??? Everyone knows the NSBE mission - To increase the number of culturally responsible, Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. Although not explicitly mentioned in the mission, part of that includes living a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Statistics show that African-Americans are highly susceptible to many diseases, in part due to unhealthy lifestyles. As a result, this year’s Convention Planning Committee is introducing the NSBE Fit Challenge. The purpose of the NSBE Fit Challenge is to encourage health and wellness amongst our 30,000+ members. The challenge will culminate with the NSBE 5K Fun Run & Walk. Proceeds will benefit the following Indianapolis organizations and charities: Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis (MEPI) and the Christamore House Family and Community Center.

#NSBE2013 Member Spotlight Meet Karmen Martin What is your Engineering Background? I am a NSBE Member from Region III. As a distribution operations engineer at LG&E and KU Energy LLC (Louisville, KY), I provide technical support for design and construction as it relates to standards. “I also solve problems with customer complaints by performing analyses, identifying solutions, recommending improvements and ensuring proper system design and protection”. I received my BSEE from Hampton University (Hampton, VA). I had always liked math and science, and in high school I had the chance to job-shadow an engineer; which helped to solidify my career choice. How are you preparing for the NSBE 5K? Fast paced songs are a must for running! Motivation by T.I. is an oldie but goodie. There are also a few apps that help me track my progress. C25K- 5K Trainer Free is an 8 week training program that prepares beginners from a couch potato to 5K runner. Lose It! is an app that counts calories to keep you on track with any weight loss goals. When you realize it takes 30 minutes of running just to work off one donut you think twice about your eating habits.

Meet Mark Woodard What is your Engineering Background? I earned my degree in Civil Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. I now work for RW Armstrong, an international civil engineering consulting firm that is based out of Indianapolis. My job consists of designing and estimating road and highway projects in Indiana. I am also an active member of the Greater Indianapolis Alumni Chapter in Region IV. How are you preparing for the NSBE 5K? If you're working on a PR, there are plenty of advanced workouts and nutritional programs and many of them come with apps. I use the RunKeeper app to track and pace my outdoor runs. I also have a playlist filled with high-tempo songs to energize me, but the best way for me to make the time go by is to listen to audiobooks.
