Hill-Murray topples No. 1 Minnetonka for Class AA repeat; Thief River Falls ousts two-time champ The Blake School in Class A By Tim Leighton

T

Class A It was quite a state tournament debut for Thief River Falls, which also included students from Goodridge, Red Lake County Central, and Warren-Alvarado-Oslo. For years, Thief River Falls hasn’t been able to make the state tournament trip, primarily because of Warroad’s supremacy in Section 8A. And in 2014, East Grand Forks, another 8A school, was the Class A runner-up in its first state tournament trip. It was a momentous occasion, especially for Thief River Falls goalie Frances Marshall. Moments after backstopping the Prowlers’ championship run, she was selected to the Wells Fargo All-Tournament team and presented the Class A Herb Brooks Award for sportsmanship and character. The Blake School looked like it might be on the way to a three-peat when Carly Bullock skated in alone on Marshall and beat her with a backhand 21 seconds into the championship game. No other pucks would get past Marshall, who finished with 26 saves. It remained 1-0 in the Bears’ favor until late in the second period when Kora Torkelson forged a tie with a power play goal. Emily Bergland scored the eventual gamewinner for Thief River Falls with 3:06 left in regulation time. Callie Fagerstrom completed the scoring on an empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining on a shot from more than 170 feet away. The Blake School found its way into the record book for a second time in the same category. The Bears had two shutouts during the tournament. Blake also accomplished the feat in 2009. Warroad (2011) and Edina (2011) also have had two shutouts during a single state tournament. 234

In the third-place game, Taylor Heise took a pass from Reagan Haley and scored with 52.4 seconds remaining in regulation time to give Red Wing a 3-2 victory over South St. Paul. It was the fourth time in six state tournament appearances that the Wingers finished third. Seconds before the winning goal, South St. Paul was putting heavy pressure in the offensive zone. When the puck was poked out to the blue line, Haley scooped it up and began a 2-on-1 break the other way. It was Heise’s second goal of the game and 30th of the season. She opened the scoring for Red Wing and that was followed by a goal from Kayla Oberding for a 2-0 Wingers’ lead. But South St. Paul, a state tournament regular, scored two goals in three minutes in the third period. AJ Deering scored the first goal for the Packers and Taylor Cashman forged a tie with the other.

hief River Falls was top-ranked in the final Class A Let’s Play Hockey poll of the regular season and that’s where the Prowlers remained after defeating two-time defending champion, The Blake School of Minneapolis, 3-1 in the Class A title game. It was the eighth appearance in a championship game for The Blake School. In five of those appearances, the Bears have won a staterecord five times. Hill-Murray of Maplewood found its way to the Class AA championship game for the third consecutive season, and for the second year in a row, came out a winner following a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Minnetonka.

The Blake School earned an eighth appearance in a championship game with a 3-0 victory over Red Wing. It was the third consecutive season the Bears have defeated Red Wing in the semifinals. The Blake School fired 20 shots in the third period and scored twice to put the game out of reach for the Wingers. Jordan Chancellor had 10 shots on goal and scored twice for the Bears. Sarah Chute scored the game’s first goal of the game with just more than a minute remaining in the second period. Ninth-grade goalie Anna Kruesel had 19 saves for the shutout. Thief River Falls made its way to the championship game behind a 4-1 victory over South St. Paul in the other semifinal. The three-goal final margin isn’t indicative of how intense and close it was. The Prowlers held a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time when they got a little breathing room. Briana Jorde found an opening along the left side of the rink and raced forward, zipping past the South St. Paul defense. She slid a backhanded shot Continued on page 244

2015

2015 REVIEW (Continued from page 234) between the legs of South St. Paul goalie Sydney Conley with a 3-1 lead with 1:42 left. Sylvia Marolt made it 4-1 with an empty-net goal with 28 seconds remaining in regulation time. The Blake School opened the tournament with a 9-0 victory over Hutchinson, out-shooting the Tigers 42-3. Karlie Lund scored three goals in the second period and finished with four to power the Bears. Carly Bullock chipped in two goals and three assists and Lucy Burton had two goals and an assist. Red Wing advanced to the semifinals for the third consecutive year behind a 3-0 victory over Alexandria. Ashley Corcoran made 25 saves and Reagan Haley scored two goals for the Wingers. Thief River Falls began its quest for a state championship with a 5-1 victory over New Ulm, which includes students from New Ulm Cathedral, Sleepy Eye, and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. New Ulm goalie Karlie Ries kept Thief River Falls scoreless by stopping the first 24 shots that came her way. Kora Torkelson had back-to-back goals in less than two minutes in the second period that helped stake the Prowlers to a threegoal advantage after two periods. Emily Bergland had a goal and four assists. Thief River Falls set a new girls’ hockey state tournament record with 58 shots in regulation time. That broke the old mark of 56 set by Breck School of Golden Valley in 2011, also against New Ulm. South St. Paul gave up a first-period goal to Hibbing/Chisholm, but answered with five consecutive goals en route to a 5-1 quarterfinal victory. Anna Barlow and Abigail Felton triggered the run with second period goals. They each finished with two goals and an assist.

Class AA Hill-Murray’s thoughts of completing a successful title defense took a jolt just 21 seconds into the championship game.

Minnetonka, which won three consecutive titles from 2011-13, struck first when Emma Bigham scored on the game’s first shot with 21 seconds elapsed. It stayed that way through the first period, with Minnetonka holding an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, but more importantly, a lead on the scoreboard. That lead disappeared at 10:43 of the second period when Hill-Murray’s Laura Anderson scored an even-strength goal. Jess Bonfe scored with just more than two minutes elapsed in the third period to give the Pioneers the eventual title-clinching goal. Minnetonka pulled goalie Tatyana Delaittre for the final 1 minute, 40 seconds of regulation time as the Skippers tried in earnest to tie the score. But the Pioneers’ defense had been equal parts efficient and dynamic in protecting that lead. Taylor Williamson scored two goals to spark Edina to a 3-1 victory over Lakeville South in the third-place game. The Hornets had five power-play opportunities and scored on two of them. Her two goals gave her 40 for the season. Lakeville South opened the scoring on Morgan Morse’s 33rd goal of the season. Hill-Murray earned a berth in the state championship game with a 2-1 semifinal victory over Edina. The victory avenged a 4-3 loss that Hill-Murray had suffered to Edina in early December. Laura Anderson snapped a 1-1 tie on a power-play goal with 4:12 remaining in regulation time. Minnetonka put itself in position for another state championship with a 5-1 victory over Lakeville South. Nine different Skippers’ players got involved in the scoring. Katie McMillan led the way with three points off a power-play goal and two assists. Kippin Keller added two goals. Hill-Murray began its journey to a state championship with a 6-1 victory over unseeded Eastview of Apple Valley. Lindsey Featherstone

scored two goals and six different Pioneer players had at least one assist. Edina scored two power-play goals in the third period to break a scoreless tie en route to a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Buffalo. Buffalo opened the scoring less than a minute into the third period on a goal by Abby Halluska. But 1:42 later, Edina’s Emily Oden forged a 1-all tie. Oden also scored the gamewinner with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Minnetonka started fast and didn’t let up until posting a 5-0 victory over Andover. Kippin Keller had two goals and Presley Norby had three points. Andover joined Marshall (2007) and Hutchinson (2009) as teams that have been held scoreless in the tournament. Lakeville South opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Blaine. Morgan Morse scored three goals for the Cougars, the No. 4 seed. The Class A Herb Brooks Award and a $1,000 scholarship were presented to Thief River Falls senior Frances Marshall. The Class AA Herb Brooks Award and a $1,000 scholarship were presented to Blaine senior Makayla Tilton. The 2015 State Girls’ Hockey Tournament, the 21st annual, was played February 18-21, with championship-round games at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul and consolation games at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Total paid attendance was 20,826.
