Weaving Our Sisters’ Voices A sacred tapestry blended into dance, music, and poetry about women from scripture. Audiences will hear from Vashti, Jochebed, Miriam and ten other amazing women, named and unnamed from Biblical times, as we explore contemporary themes within these ancient stories. This ensemble performance uses the words from Linda Schearing (GU Religion Studies) and music from Bob Spittal (GU Music Dept). Rehearsals: Monday – Thursday 5:00 - 9:00pm in Magnuson Performances: Fridays/Saturdays 7:30 and Sundays 2:00, Jan 29, 30, 31, Feb 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 2015. Available Roles: 6-12 female performers. Actors, dancers and combination will be cast. The Book of Hours “I believe in all that has never yet been spoken / I want to free what waits within me / so that what no one has dared to wish for / may for once spring clear / without my contriving.” Gonzaga Theatre & Dance presents an original devised theatrical event created by the ensemble. We will draw from Rainer Maria Rilke’s The Book of Hours. Written in 1899, when the poet was 23 years old, The Book of Hours remains a startlingly raw and relevant collection of love poems to a God who needs us as much as we need God. Rilke writes as young man desperate to forge his own understanding. He loves. He doubts. He struggles for meaning in an uncertain time. Rehearsals = Monday – Thursday 3:00 - 6:30pm in TDS Performances = Fridays/Saturdays 7:30 and Sundays 2:00, Feb. 4-7 & 11-13, 2015. Available Roles: 12-15 actors, musicians, designers, dancers, and other artists will be cast. Men & Women.

A Flame BY ADAM ZAGAJEWSKI TRANSLATED BY CLARE CAVANAGH God, give us a long winter and quiet music, and patient mouths, and a little pride—before our age ends. Give us astonishment and a flame, high, bright.

And I Was Alive BY OSIP MANDELSTAM TRANSLATED BY CHRISTIAN WIMAN And I was alive in the blizzard of the blossoming pear,
Myself I stood in the storm of the bird–cherry tree.
It was all leaflife and starshower, unerring, self–shattering power,
And it was all aimed at me. What is this dire delight flowering fleeing always earth?
What is being? What is truth? Blossoms rupture and rapture the air,
 All hover and hammer,
Time intensified and time intolerable, sweetness raveling rot. It is now. It is not.

(May 4, 1937) From Stolen Air by Osip Mandelstam, selected and translated by Christian Wiman. Copyright © 2012 by Christian Wiman.

A Mirror BY JEAN FOLLAIN TRANSLATED BY CZESLAW MILOSZ Having gone upstairs on steps of dark oak she finds herself before a mirror with worm-eaten frame she contemplates in it her virgin torso all the countryside is ablaze and gently arrives at her feet a domestic beast as if to remind her of the animal life which conceals in itself also the body of a woman.
