Keb Eco-Shell

The impregnation in Keb Eco-Shell Jacket is 100% free from environmentally toxic fluorocarbons.

Mission: ustainability s When the Keb series was to be expanded to include waterproof hardshells the development team gave themselves a challenge: to create highly functional waterproof shell garments with the lowest possible environmental impact. This is the story of their journey.

esigner peter lindblom pulls a zipper on a shell jacket and checks how it glides along the opening. Henrik Andersson, Head of Innovation and Design at Fjällräven, is playing the part of dressmaker’s dummy and patiently lifts his arms and turns around according to Peter’s instructions. The fa miliar smell of campfires can be detected in the design office. “Someone must have lit a campfire the last time this jacket was being tested out in the field. This jacket has seen quite a lot of action,” says Peter Lindblom with a smile. The jacket he is talking about is Fjäll räven’s latest addition to the Keb family; Keb Eco-Shell Jacket. It is a modern, minima listic shell jacket designed for the toughest imaginable conditions in the mountains. But it is also Fjällräven’s answer to the question regarding what the world’s most functional waterproof garment that is also environmentally sustainable can look like. It is the result of three year’s worth of persistent development work. The first generation of Eco-Shell gar ments was released in 2011. At the same time, Fjällräven was working on the technical Keb family of garments for alpine trekking in demanding terrain. The basic idea with Keb has always been to develop a system of garments that work together, and not long into the process the idea came along to design waterproof shell garments as a complement to the jackets and trousers made from G-1000 and stretch fabric. And these were not going to be just any shell garments: “We decided to develop the most func tional series of waterproof hardshells ever created, without making any compromises what-so-ever when it came to sustainability,” explains Henrik Andersson. “We don’t want our products to have an unnecessary negative effect on the environment and animal life. Achieving the highest level of functionality and lowest level of environmental impact are equally prioritised and it is not until we have achieved both aspects that we are happy with a product.” With this goal, an intensive period of development work began. The base for the new garments was of course Eco-Shell – a newly developed membrane laminate with the highest wa terproofness and breathability performance, and that is made so it can stretch and thereby

Quality in the details – nothing is left to chance when the development team checks the seams of jackets and trousers.

give a totally new freedom of movement to garments. But the real point is that all three layers are made from polyester, in part recycled, which gives the garment a fantastic advantage in the future as it can be recycled. In addition, garments are also climate compensated and impregnated entirely without fluorocarbons. Why do you want to avoid fluorocarbons? “Fluorocarbons are harmful to the environment, they bio-ac cumulate in living organisms and remain for an extremely long time in ground water and nature,” says Henrik Andersson. “Flu orochemistry is complex, and it is still legal to use these types of chemicals. But we are not waiting until the law changes – we don’t want to use fluorocarbons in our products.” What compromises have to be made when choosing a fluorocarbon-free impregnation? “When it comes to pure functionality, there are no decisive compromises. The waterproofness comes from the membrane, the impregnation is there to keep the outer surface of the fabric as dry as possible. A fluorocarbon-free impregnation is also water resistant – but it is not as resistant to oils and dirt as traditional impregnations and it needs to be renewed a little more often.”

T

he jacket that Henrik and Peter are looking at in the office is one of ten prototypes that the development department have let Fjällräven’s test team scrutinise during drawn-out field tests. The group is led by production specialist Johan Skullman and consists of mountain guides, dog mushers and professionals

who are outdoors for days on end, and who have taken Eco-Shell garments trekking, ski touring and alpine skiing. As well as on countless other everyday outdoor adventures. The garments have been up to the top of Mt Kebnekaise (of course, it is after all where the collection got its name), they have been battling through swirling snow and head winds in Lapland’s mountainous expanses, rock climbing in pouring rain, and exposed to freezing temperatures in Svalbard and deep powder snow in Japan. But they have also been used by the development team on their own adventures, both in the mountains and forests closer to home. “In order for us to understand how a garment works in reality, with everything from material choice and cut to the place ment of the pockets, we have to be out there using it – both in extreme environments and in more everyday situations,” says Henrik Andersson. “And we conduct laboratory tests as well of course, where the durability, waterproofness and technical performance of the fabrics are analysed.” This autumn and winter you will be able to see the results for the first time out in the stores. Henrik Andersson explains the process. “When we work with this kind of project, we don’t have a deadline. There is no pressure to be finished for a certain autumn or spring collection. If it is going to be the best possible product then it has to be allowed to take the time that it takes.” How did you approach the design of the products? “Functionality and form are not oppo sites. If you start on a design of a product based on its necessary features, everything usually falls into place. There is not a single thing on the jacket that is not there for a reason – this is true for every detail from ventilation and pockets to the hood and adjustments,” says Peter Lindblom.

T

he new collection consists of a jacket, an anorak and a pair of trou sers, all in both men’s and women’s models. In addi tion, there is a longer, lightly padded parka and a pair of bib trousers. The garments are designed to work by themselves and together – and they should be able to be combined with other garments in the Keb family, explains Peter Lindblom. “The shell trousers are, for example, cut 10

Facts on Fluorocarbons Fluorocarbons are often used as impregnation on textiles to repel water and dirt. Impregnation changes the surface tension of the garment so that water forms droplets and runs off. The disadvantage is that these chemicals also have other, less desirable, properties. Fluorocarbons are chemically stable which means that they are not broken down in the environment, but rather that they spread and are stored in living organisms. There is also research that shows that they can affect reproduction systems and hormone production in mammals. They are suspected

to cause cancer and can travel long distances – they have been found all the way up in the Arctic region. This is the reason behind Fjällräven’s decision to only use fluorocarbon-free impregnation in all products. Ask for a fluorocarbon-free impregnation product in your outdoor store next time you are going to impregnate your jacket. You can choose between products that you wash into the garments, and others that you spray on.

The Keb Eco-Shell series has been tested in very tough conditions, all around the world. Here, on the way up to Mt Kebnekaise’s southern peak, a cold front has just hit the test team.

Helmet-compatible, adjustable hood that protects and warms without limiting vision or head movements. Well-worked-through, technical cut that gives excellent freedom of movement on demanding trips, all year round.

Stretchy 3-layer Eco-Shell that combines high performance and durability with low environmen tal impact.

The outer layer is made from recycled polyester that has fluorocarbon-free impregnation. It is so pliant that it follows body move ments in a natural way.

Minimalistic design with few details keeps weight down, while at the same time the anorak provides reliable protection even in challenging conditions.

Three-quarter length water-resi stant zipper with inside protective flap, simple to open from both the top and bottom for extra ventilation to keep your mood on top in all kinds of weather.

Spacious chest pockets with vertical zippers and inside elastic mesh pockets for a phone or the like. Easily acces sed even when wearing a climbing harness or backpack with hipbelt.

Lightweight and strong Eco-Shell is 100% polyester. This makes the anorak easy to recycle on that day far in the future when it has done its job. Velcro adjustments at the sleeve cuffs.

Zippers at the sides release excess heat when active. They are also practical for putting your hands in for some quick extra warmth.

All cuts are meticulously worked through for the best fit – they are snug fitting but still have room for an insulating layer underneath.” “It has been a challenge to make a jacket as lightweight as possible at the same time as it must be able to handle tough conditions, give maximum freedom of movement and minimum environmental impact.” Now Keb Eco-Shell Jacket and the other garments are available in stores, they have been shown at trade fairs and got their first early response from the outdoor industry – and the anorak has received an honourable ISPO Award. Are Peter and Henrik pleased? “Yes, absolutely. We have managed to create garments that have adaptable functio nality, and the response from the test team and early users has been amazingly positive. What makes us really pleased is that we have managed to do all of this at the same time as we have minimised environmental impact,” says Henrik Andersson.

C Keb Eco-Shell garments are made from the newly developed Eco-Shell 3-Layer Stretch that follows body movements naturally. A: The outer fabric in recycled polyester is treated with a fluorocarbon-free impregnation that repels rain, water, sleet and snow from the outer layer of the fabric. B: The hydrophilic membrane that is the middle layer effectively stops any moisture from getting in from the outside, at the same time as it can transport moisture from the body out to the outer layer of the fabric where

B it evaporates. The membrane is 100% wind and waterproof from the outside. C: A thin polyester lining protects the inside of the membrane and makes the garment soft and comfortable against the skin. This inner layer also helps initiate the transport of body moisture through the membrane. D: Together with the membrane, the windproof outer fabric stops cold winds from getting though the garment and lowering the temperature inside.

Keeping an eye on quality: High-quality down products are graded according to their fill power. 400-450 is considered medium quality, 500-550 is good quality, 550-750 is very good quality and 750+ is excellent. The majority of our down products have a fill power of over 600.

Down is the obvious choice for sleeping bags when weight and volume are high priorities, for example when trekking. Down is the material that gives the most insulation in relation to its weight, and it can be packed to a very small volume so it takes up less space in a backpack.

6 questions for Christiane Dolva Head of Sustainability at Fjällräven

The organisation Four Paws has ranked Fjällräven’s down process as the best in the entire outdoor industry. Why? “We have set up our own process to gether with a veterinarian and our partners in China, and we have control over the whole process. There are two different standards in the branch, and in our process we don’t rely on certificates or audit reports, we go there ourselves and check. We don’t only inspect the geese farms either, we also include the egg hatching process, the transportation of geese, slaughter and all handling of the down.” How do you make sure the process is carried out according to the criteria you have put in place? “The most important thing is that we are there on the ground in China and conduct regular inspections. This has been the main idea behind our down process, and maybe this is why we are the best. We have to keep all dialogue channels open and keep placing demands on our suppliers so we don’t lose what we have built up. It has taken several years to put a transparent chain of production in place.” What has been the most challenging aspect? “Several years ago the branch’s approach was that you simply could not trace down because it was purchased in a way that was “impossible” to monitor. Proving this wrong has required investing in logistics and we have had to think outside of the box. We have, for example, developed our own

sacks that are marked so our down cannot get mixed up with other down, and we have started keeping stocks of down in a way that we haven’t been able to do before.” Can the process be further improved, and if so, how? “It is a continuous process. You can’t make a big effort then lean back and take it easy. We have to continue being on the ground in China and showing our suppliers that we are serious about our guidelines and demands. We are also going to look at organising even better transportation methods for the geese.” What has the response been to Fjällräven’s down process? “We have had an incredibly positive response from the entire industry. Many think that we have made amazing progress and they want to know how we have done it. Our customers who have questions about these issues are positively surprised that we can give such good answers.” The down issue is part of your job as Head of Sustainability at Fjällräven. What is your main responsibility? “It is to make sure that all parts of Fjällräven’s organisation have the tools and competence that they need to make sustainable choices. I make sure that we have sustainability work integrated into the entire organisation. Down is just a small part of it, and it has taken many years and a lot of work to get to this level. So that says something about the complexity of it.”

W

hat is the point of making clothing that protects us against the powers of nature if nature itself is fighting to survive? Our love for the wilderness and our desire to protect it pervades everything we do at Fjällräven. After several years of intensive develop ment work we are therefore proud to present Keb Eco-Shell, a whole new series of shell garments that don’t just reach our maxi mum technical level by being waterproof and breathable – they are also impregnated entirely without the use of environmentally 22

toxic fluorocarbons. With Keb Eco-Shell we have taken the next step towards the top: garments that are minimalistic and made for maximum freedom of movement, but at the same time durable enough to give complete weather protection in difficult terrain – regardless of if you are skiing or out on a challenging trek. Technically, Keb Eco-Shell has a th ree-layer stretch construction. Its breatha bility is excellent and allows body moisture to be efficiently ventilated out, at the same time as rain and wind cannot permeate the fabric from the outside. In addition, the garments are made from 100% polyester

(both recycled and virgin) so they are suitable for future recycling. Our goal with Keb Eco-Shell is higher than simply protecting you against the elements all year round.

A Tip from Fjällräven: Don’t underestimate the wind! “Moderate to strong breeze” doesn’t sound so bad. But when the temperature is at 0 degrees, the wind-chill effect of an 8m/sec breeze is -13 degrees on the skin.

One of our new comers this year is Keb Eco-Shell Trousers. Crea ting the optimal shell trousers required careful selection of materials and testing them in really tough conditions as well as a good team of people and a lot of hard work. These trousers are made from 100% polyester and their impreg nation is 100% free from fluorocarbons.” Which details are worth an extra mention? “We have reinforced the trousers at the lower legs and there are zippers the whole way up the sides so they are easy to put on and take off. There are Velcro adjustments at the waist and a belt so the trousers can be adjusted to sit really comfortably. Keb Eco-Shell Trousers are a com plement to Keb Trousers, one of Fjällräven’s most popular products.” What makes the original Keb Trousers so unique? “They are well-fitting and durable trousers with a lot of smart features and ventilation possibilities. The stretch in the trousers makes them incredibly comfortable to wear and the reinforcements in g-1000 make them very durable. Keb Eco-Shell Trou sers are a complement to Keb Trousers, and they have been designed so they can be worn over regular trekking trousers – when trekking in the moun tains a pair of reinforcement trousers is often needed when wet weather is encountered.”

G-Loft Supreme is the name of our new synthetic insulation that has exceptionally high insulating properties, even in extremely wet and cold conditions. The new material has been develo ped exclusively for Fjällräven by insulation experts Goldeck Textil in Austria.   Its unique mix of hollow, super-thin polyester fibres has a natural ability to form “clusters”, just like high-qua lity down, creating countless small air pockets that insulate against the cold. In addition, G-Loft Supreme is fast drying, highly compressible, durable and easy to wash.

e i n de e r fa r m i ng i n L apland. Life in the Arctic wilderness. Wherever you are outdoors – with Numbers you can find products that can handle the conditions. When we developed our top collection, we put together Fjällräven’s more than 50 years of experience of outdoor life, but we also conducted in-depth interviews with various professionals who spend their everyday life outdoors. We wanted to reach an entirely new level of functionality, workmanship and durability. The result is a system of products that works holistically in a great number of diffe 28

rent environments and climates – a collection whose greatness is in its simple solutions. Low environmental impact was one of our most important points of departure when developing Numbers. For this reason we use G-1000 Eco in recycled polyester and organic cotton, and the majority of the small leather details are made from spill from Fjällräven’s Swedish belt factory. We have also put in reinforcements where the garments get the most wear and use constructions that make it easy to replace worn out details. We do not want you to buy any new gear. Numbers garments will be passed down the generations, just like knowledge of the environment or pride in a profession.

A Tip from Fjällräven: Fire provides heat and security! To be able to light a fire when outdoors in the winter make sure you pack: Matches stored in a waterproof bag or container, wax paper or bark, a fire steel and a knife.

When we started working on a new winter parka for our Numbers series our aim was to create the best parka ever made. Totally without compromises. And we think we have suc ceeded in this. We have used our collective knowledge and the best materials available and the result is Expedition Down Parka No.1. It has been designed completely from a user perspective. The jacket is suitable for professional use in the Arctic, where reliability, functionality and user-friend liness are of the utmost importance. Everything is over dimensioned so it can be handled with gloves on.” What is the parka made of? “The outer fabric is G-1000 Eco, and it is padded with ethically-produced down. The shoulders, sleeves, lower back and pockets are made from G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco, and the linings of the hand pock ets and the inside of the collar are made from soft, warm wool from the renowned cloth mill Abraham Moon.” How long will it last? “I would like to meet the person who can wear out this parka. It quite simply isn’t possible. Fjällräven’s down jackets from the 1970s are still going strong 40 years later. And this can have an even longer life. It is a jacket for generations of users.”

reedom, responsibility, curiosity. When we leave the security of the mountain station and well-marked trails behind us something happens that is pretty exci ting. Being out in the wilderness, totally reliant on our own abilities, gives us an intense feeling of being as one with nature. Fjällräven is highly associated with trekk ing and life in the Swedish mountains – this reflects our history and origins. Today it is normal to be out trekking for 3-4 days, but before it was not unusual to be out for up to 14 days. Sarek is all about packing a large backpack and trekking for longer periods, being more self-sufficient. I like trekking in Sarek garments because they give me a strong feeling of being as one with nature.” Describe their connection to the Sarek National Park. “Sarek is a robust collection that symbolically characteri ses the national park: you are in some really remote places and you are not trekking from cabin to cabin. The weather can change very quickly which means you cannot take the chance of sleeping under the stars, more often than not you will have to sleep in a tent.” What characterises these garments? “Sarek is a collection of robust garments in timeless styles. We use the heavier versions of the g-1000 fabrics, both HeavyDuty and Original. The most important aspect is durability and that they are hardwearing, but they also have to have good storage. You can pack a lot of gear in a Sarek jacket in a convenient, accessible way.”

Kenth Fjellborg

Kenth Fjellborg’s forefathers were among the first to live permanently in Jukkasjärvi in the 1700s.

Where the road ends How do we test and develop products for the Arctic climate? For 25 years, one of Sweden’s most experienced dog mushers has helped Fjällräven with his unique knowledge. Meet Kenth Fjellborg from Poikkijärvi.

K

enth fjellborg lives to make the difficult easy and the impossible possible. For more than 20 years, his company has developed and simplified dogsledding tourism with the goal of making the Scandinavian wilderness accessible to everyone. The question is if there is any challenge left when nothing is left to chance? “For many guests, just experiencing the feel of snow and ice under their boots is an adventure,” explains Kenth. “Things that Scandinavians take for granted are not at all normal if you come from countries such as Brazil or Australia.” We are 160 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in the village of Poikkijärvi, east of Kiruna, where Kenth and Ann Fjellborg’s property looks out over the impressive

38

Torneälven River. The world-famous ice hotel can be seen on the other side of the river in Jukkasjärvi. Kenth’s forefathers were among the first to live permanently in Jukkasjärvi in the 1700s. His grandfather, however, chose to build his house in the small village of Poikkijärvi, on the other side of the river, and it is here, close to the village but not too close, that Fjellborg Arctic Journeys is based. Around 100 Alaskan huskies live in the family’s kennels and from the farmyard you can see a series of trails leading down to the ice and into the forests north of the river. This is Kenth’s backyard and he knows it like the back of his hand - he grew up here. He has never felt the need to live anywhere else, except for when he was 19 and decided he wanted to expand his horizons by working abroad for a while.

39

Kenth Fjellborg

Kenth Fjellborg has been involved with and developed a number of products for Fjällräven including clothing that can withstand extreme cold.

Kenth Fjellborg has over 100 Alaskan huskies. The first litter was born in 1990.

“This maybe says something about my interests – as a teenager I travelled to Alaska, the one place in the world that is similar to Lapland in terms of both lifestyle and wilderness.” Dogsledding tourism came to Jukkas järvi when Kenth was a teenager and his desire to learn something new led him to help in the kennels and take care of and train sled dogs. After winning a competition with a team of six borrowed dogs, Kenth decided to learn everything he could about dogsled driving, known as mushing, in the sport’s homeland Alaska. He got a job with the musher Joe Runyan in Nenana, whose kennel had 140 adult dogs plus pups. Runyan had won the world-famous dogsledding competition Iditarod the same year – something that made Kenth’s job even more exciting. Runyan’s dogs were considered to be among the best in the world and Kenth got the chance to learn 40

all he could at the highest level possible. After his win and the resulting attention it brought with it, Runyan found himself travelling a lot of the time so during the summer Kenth took on sole responsibility for the kennels, which was no small task for the teenager from Poikkijärvi. “But I had experience in working with dogs, and I was used to four wheelers and snow mobiles.” Dealing with mosquitoes was another aspect he knew all about! Kenth worked hard and took on board as much specialised knowledge as he could – knowledge that is usually only passed down from one generation to the next in American dogsledding circles. When he returned home, it was his goal to build up his own kennel for competition and tourism activities. In 1990, his first litter of huskies was born, by the bitch Derby who was imported from Alaska. A few years later, Kenth returned to

Alaska to participate in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race – 1800 kilometres through Alaska’s wilderness with 16 dogs. “I got 20th place in Iditarod 1994 but I missed out on the title Rookie of the Year. Ramy Brooks won that. He came 17th, only one hour and 17 minutes ahead of me.”

Y

ou can’t help noticing that Kenth has a competiti ve spirit, but as his operation grew it became harder to combine competing with taking tourists dogsledding and as a result he decided to retire from competing and spend all his time working with dogsled ding tourism. It was at this stage of his career, in the beginning of the 1990s, that Kenth and Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin got to know each other. Their common interest in outdoor challenges led to the first edition

of Fjällräven Polar, which was a Swedish version of Iditarod, but for regular people. Today, the competitive element of the event has been completely removed and the focus is now on educating and inspiring the participants. At the same time as Åke and Kenth started Polar, they also started another project together that focused on clothing and equipment for the Arctic climate. Kenth’s dogsledding operation provided a unique chance to test products in an extreme climate, with the help of people who needed hardwearing and functional clothing in their daily work. Fjällräven’s Polar Bib Trousers and Polar Parka are examples of products that Kenth has been involved in the development of, clothing designed to withstand extreme cold and hard wear – not at least from sharp dog claws. “There have been amazing developments made since my first years as a dogsledding

Kenth’s three best wilderness tips: 1. No fire – no rest Keep matches dry and transport dry birch bark in a plastic bag between your back and your backpack. Being able to make a fire is essential. It is hard to get dry with just a camping stove if you have fallen through the ice. 2. The best equipment is the gear you don’t think about. Wear worn-in shoes and equipment you have tried and tested. Clothing should be flexible and work well in all kinds of weather. When you find yourself far from home you have to be able to feel secure with your equipment and be able to solve problems in the field. 3. Fewer things = happier trip. Leave the gadgets at home! Who wants to get annoyed by the new handheld espresso machine that doesn’t work as it should or because you left it at the last campsite?

guide. The equipment we used at the end of the 1980s consisted of a combination of cumbersome clothing made for slaughter house workers and homemade gloves and woollen garments. Today, it is an entirely different story. For those of us who spend a large amount of time outside, being dry and warm rather than wet and cold is not just a question of comfort, it is a question of safety.” Fjellborg Arctic Journeys has also made a lot of headway since it started up business 20 years ago. Today, the company owns three lodges that have been built from scratch in strategic locations out in the wilderness around Jukkasjärvi. On multi-day dogsledding tours guests are driven from one lodge to another and spend their evenings enjoying warm saunas and delicious dinners in the peaceful Lapland wilderness. “Preserving all that is genuine and 41

Today Kenth Fjellborg is 44 years old. When he was 19 he moved to Alaska, where he learnt everything there is to know about sled dogs and dogsledding.

simple is important to us. For many of our guests, the silence alone is reason enough to come to us.” In addition to the lodge-based trips, longer dog sledding adventures are orga nised that reach all the way into Norway or Finland. Tailor-made excursions are also available, such as Albert II, Prince of Monaco’s expedition to the North Pole. The idea came about in Kenth’s sauna, when the prince and his friends were celebrating the completion of a successful trip through the Signaldalen valley. When one of the party jokingly suggested the South Pole as a goal for their next trip Kenth answered that this was unfortunately impossible for him to help with but he could organise a trip to the North Pole instead. Said and done, after a lot of preparations Prince Albert’s expedition reached the North Pole on April 16th, 2006. “It was the first time a sitting head of state had put a flag at the North Pole and a great moment for the entire team,” remembers Kenth. Kenth thinks that the company conti 42

nues to attract guests with high demands because of his long-term thinking and that he has always invested in the best quality possible. His business philosophy has many similarities to his dogsledding – where it is a deciding factor to have the right dog in the right place and that everyone takes responsibility for their job, because a dog team is only as strong as its weakest member. Getting back to the question of adven ture, is it still an adventure if everything from equipment to logistics is planned to the most minute detail? Kenth thinks it depends on how you define an adventure. “In the 1990s travelling was a lot about seeing specific things and places. But this is not enough for today’s guests. They want to get a taste of our lifestyle and at the same time discover new sides of themselves. The focus is more about the inner journey and the adventure you experience when you leave your comfort zone and challenge yourself,” he explains. The last expedition for the season is for three VIP guests – Kenth’s daughters aged 7, 10 and 12, who will all be driving their

own dogsleds. Kenth thinks that it is great that the idea for this family outing with the dogs came from the children themselves and he is careful to explain that he has never pushed them into dogsledding or taking part in the family company. “You have to have a whole-hearted interest for it to work, you can’t take over an operation like this just because your daddy wants you to.” When asked if he will close the circle and return to the competition circuit, Kenth answers thoughtfully, as he always does. “Yes, I sometimes feel the desire to compete again, but it is an elite sport that demands total focus and commitment which would be hard to combine with the level of service I want to maintain for our guests. But bearing in mind that it is a sport where the dogs do the majority of the physical work, maybe I could make a comeback once I have retired. The oldest participant that has completed Iditarod was 86 years old, so I have time on my side,” says Kenth with a smile.

Preserving all that is genuine and simple is important to us.

ature is seldom as magnificent as it is when covered by a blanket of pristine snow. Imagine the crisp cold, the snow-laden trees, the combination of sunny days and the northern lights dancing across the night sky. Experiencing all of this will give anyone memories for life – including the participants of Fjällräven Polar. Since 1997, Fjällräven has organised a dogsledding expedition that stretches over 300 km from Signaldalen in Norway to Jukkasjärvi in Sweden. People from all over the world apply to take part and 20 lucky participants are selected every year to drive their own dogsleds for four days through one of Europe’s last wildernesses. By organising Fjällräven Polar we want to show that outdoor life in the wintertime does not have to be inhospitable and cold – with the right equipment and preparations

44

it can be both enjoyable and safe. Until 2006, Fjällräven Polar was held as a competitive event, and after this we took a break for five years. In 2012 it started up again but without the competitive element. The idea of Fjällräven Polar came about when Kenth Fjellborg, one of Sweden’s leading mushers (read more about Kenth on page 39), met Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin in the beginning of the 1990s. Fjell borg had taken part in Iditarod, the world’s most challenging dogsledding competition in Alaska, where only the best mushers in the world are allowed to participate. Kenth and Åke put their heads together and start ed discussing the possibility of a Swedish version, but for regular people. When they told people about their idea the response was amazing, and since Fjällräven Polar started in 1997, thousands of applications from all over the globe have been received every year.

The most important thing to remember about being outdoors in the winter is to stay dry. Fjällräven supplies all participants with the gear and training they need for the adventure.

The expedition begins with a survival course led by Johan Skullman, who has 30 years’ experience of outdoor life and survival in the wilderness. 45

Fjällräven Polar

2015 was no exception. This year’s edition of Fjällräven Polar attracted applicants from countries such as South Korea, Germany, USA and Norway. Expectations were high when the participants met in Sigtuna, Stockholm, for their first survival course with Fjällräven’s expert Johan Skullman, who has more than 30 years’ experience of life in the wilderness. “I have never travelled through a winter landscape before. And I have no experience of being with Alaskan huskies, everything is new to me!” says Tseren Enebish who has travelled from Mongolia to Sweden to take part in Fjällräven Polar. This year, the event started on April 7th in Signaldalen Valley, Norway, and the participants drove their dogsleds for five days across the region known as Nordkalotten. From the coast they travelled over moun tains and across the tundra through the sub-Arctic wilderness, over the mountain lowlands and on through the alpine forests surrounding Jukkasjärvi. For the first time in the event’s history, the entire expedition was delayed a day due to strong winds and heavy snowfalls. When the participants came up above the treeline they were met by a storm that delivered 50cm of snow in only 24 hours. “I got a real adrenaline kick from the strong winds and the visibility was terrible. You could hardly see the person in front of you. That really kept you on your toes,” said participant Emma Elwin from Sweden who was very impressed by how the dogs handled the situation. “They were fantastic, they knew exactly what to do.” After five days in the wilderness, the expedition came to an end. The participants all experienced an array of emotions; relief over making it the whole way to the finish combined with sadness that it was all over as well as anxiety about leaving their new friends and the heroic dogs. “I am sad because it is the end of an adventure,” said Inger Kristin Gorseth from Norway at the finish line in Väkkärä outside Jukkasjärvi. “But several of the participants are al ready talking about organising a reunion, so I have to look at it as the start of something new instead.”

G-1000

A natural ombination c It is extremely durable. It is water resistant. It is G-1000. Here is the story behind one of the world’s foremost functional fabrics and the wax that has been its best friend for almost 50 years.

T With Greenland Wax you can adapt the functionality of your g-1000 garment. More wax gives more water and wind resistance, less gives more ventilation.

48

he square yellow block of wax is one of Fjällräven’s most important building blocks. Its recipe is secret. Its effect is asto nishing. Greenland Wax increases both the durability and flexibility of use of our functional fabric G-1000. Since the end of the 1960s, Greenland Wax has been produced by a Swedish family company in Dalarna, central Sweden. No wonder it is shrouded in myth. Its ingredients are simple: pure pa raffin and high-quality beeswax. This makes Greenland Wax kinder towards both people and the environment than chemically-based impregnation products. The paraffin is melted in a large vat and when it has reached the right temperature, pieces of beeswax are stirred in. A total of 190 000 blocks of Greenland Wax are produced every year and sold in stores all over the world.

So why is it called Greenland? The starting point of the wax, the fabric and their names was, like so many other things in life, a mixture of coincidence and genius. In 1966, Fjällräven supplied a climbing expedition to Greenland with tents and backpacks. When the expedition members returned home they were dissatisfied with the functionality of their clothing and had long discussions with Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin about how it could be improved. With their ideas as a point of departure, Åke Nordin began to design a jacket. Using a specially developed tent cloth that had proved to be too heavy for lightweight tents, Åke Nordin made the first version of the now legendary garment that was named Greenland Jacket. The fabric was 65% polyester and 35% cotton, and once it had been complemented with a blend of beeswax and paraffin it proved to be perfect for outdoor clothing.

The wax was named Greenland Wax and the fabric was named G-1000 after Greenland. Since the end of the 1960s this magic duo has been the foundation of Fjällräven’s development of new clothing and products. Today G-1000 comes in four versions, as well as eco versions made from recycled polyester and organic cotton. G-1000 is an extremely durable fabric that both ventilates and is wind and water resistant. The fabric provides almost 100% protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) and therefore greatly reduces the risk of sunburn. It protects against mosquitoes and is perfect to wear all year round. Unique properties for unique expe riences.

49

G-1000

Seven properties that together make G-1000 unique Hardwearing g-1000 is very resistant to wear, and this in combination with its low weight makes it an excellent choice for both travelling and outdoor life. Adaptable By applying Greenland Wax, you can easily adapt your g-1000 gar ments to different weather conditions and activity levels. The wax also increases the lifespan of the garment by enhancing its durability. Water resistant Greenland Wax makes g-1000 garments very resistant to rain and moisture. This means that you can wear them during brief rain showers. If the fabric gets wet, it will dry fast. Windproof The dense weave makes g-1000 almost totally windproof. Once impregnated with Greenland Wax it offers complete protection against freezing winds. Well ventilated One of g-1000’s most impressive qualities is its excellent ventilation – it efficiently releases moisture from the body, which is particularly practical when taking part in strenuous activities. Mosquito safe The tight weave keeps mosquitoes and other flying insects away from your skin – practical both in the mountains and the forest, or when travelling in hot climates. (G-1000 Lite is not mosquito safe.) UV protection The fabric provides almost 100% protection against the sun’s u ltraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) and therefore greatly reduces the risk of getting sunburned.

Abraham Moon & Sons

Chief Designer Martin Aveyard in the attic above the design office. This is where all the old samples are archived.

We are not the best at everything With expert craftsmanship, sure instinct and tradition, the world’s leading wool fabrics have been made by Abraham Moon & Sons in England since 1837. This is where Fjällräven sources the wool fabric used for lining F jällräven’s top collection.

T

here is not much that tells you that the mill at the end of the road in the humble village of Guiseley, west Yorkshire, is one of the textile and fashion world’s most desirable suppliers. As you pass the Wetherby Whaler fish and chip shop and the Station Pub, Paris and Milan feel very, very far away. But it is here, to Abraham Moon & Sons, that the global fashion industry turns when they want wool fabrics of absolute world class. Until the beginning of the 1980s, there were as many as seven cloth mills and wool producers in the village of Guiseley alone, and too many to count in the county of Yorkshire. Today, however, there is only Abraham Moon & Sons left and they are now the village’s biggest employer with their 180-strong staff. This is, however, a far cry from the 1000 employees who worked here a century ago. The wool industry received blow after blow in the 1980s. Cotton and linen fabrics 52

took over for summer clothing, compe tition from Turkey and China, among other countries, became stiffer, and new technical materials such as Gore-Tex and fleece, and even Fjällräven’s own G-1000, were suddenly being favoured by outdoor enthusiasts. Then the British began installing cen tral heating into their homes along with double-glazed windows, and the number of people who wanted to get around in fuzzy clothing made from old sheep was reduced further. Wool quickly became hopelessly old-fashioned. The other wool mills in the area closed down as the competition for the shrinking market became too much. But Abraham Moon & Sons chose another route and stood there ready to go when the demand for wool fabrics increased again after the turn of the millennium. They have always kept control over the entire process – from dyeing, scouring and spinning, to weaving, pattern making and finishing – which means that they can create unique and 53

Abraham Moon & Sons

Kevin Simpson empties out sacks of yellow and blue wool. Mixing more colours gives a deeper and richer coloured yarn.

Wool fabrics used in the Fjällräven Numbers collection come from Abraham Moon & Sons. Here you can see Mountaineering Shirt No. 3.

More and more people want to use natural materials with a genuine feel. high-quality fabrics that the competition quite simply cannot compete with. But those who expect to see fields of grazing sheep on the slopes behind the mill will be disappointed. The raw material for their wool fabrics comes primarily from New Zealand and South Africa. “English sheep do not have the best quality wool anymore. They are bred for meat rather than to provide high-quality wool,” says Martin Aveyard, Chief Designer at Abraham Moon & Sons, at the same time as he rubs his forefinger and thumb together, feeling an imaginary piece of wool. Highly technical materials are all very well, but wool fabrics actually have an unbeatable property that modern-day textile engineers are pulling their hair out in attempts to match: wool insulates and warms even when it is damp. It also has 54

a natural elasticity that makes woollen clothing relatively crease free, it breathes, it is strong, it has built-in sun protection, it is all but flameproof, and it absorbs dye deep into its fibres which gives it a consistent and deep colour. In recent years, wool fabrics have made a strong comeback as more and more people want to go back to natural materials with a genuine feel.

T

im Bailey is at one of the very first stations in the mill’s production line, standing between pots of pigment, large dyeing vats and sacks of wool. He is holding a handful of raw wool and again we can see the typical movement of those in the industry, he is rubbing his forefinger and thumb together. He rubs the woollen fibres back and forth

for a long moment. “All wool is different. It depends on the breed of the sheep, where they have been raised and what the weather has been like. So even if we have recipes and formulas for how we colour wool and how much pigment we need, we have to adjust them according to what kind of wool we are dealing with. I have to feel it to know what to do with it.” Out in the little village street, in front of the blackened, once coal-fired, Victo rian brick building, purchasers from the world’s fashion houses are queuing, at least figuratively speaking, to get their hands on the exclusive wool fabrics to top their collections with. Abraham Moon & Sons has a customer list that includes major international brands such as Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith, Moncler, Burberry and Brooks Brothers. And Fjällräven

Spinner Peter Foster, 72, prepares a loom.

55

It is the tiny imperfections and irregularities that give life to a fabric.

Tradition is found in the machinery and production processes, but also in the hands of the personnel.

Wool – nature’s super fibre: 1. It breathes. As a contrast to many synthetic materials, wool warms straight away, and it adapts itself so it warms in the winter and cools in the summer. 2. Water repellent. Wool fibres repel moisture and water, which means they will not rot or mould. 3. Colourable. Wool has an excellent ability to absorb pigment, which means it can be dyed any colour. 4. Flexible and elastic. Wool fibres can be bent 20 000 times without breaking. The material returns to its original shape without creasing. 5. Flameproof. Thanks to its high levels of water and nitrogen, wool is so hard to ignite that it is used in fire safety clothing.

of course, where their wool fabrics are used in our Numbers collection. “We want to use the best wool fabrics we can get hold of for our Numbers garments. So Abraham Moon & Sons is the obvious choice. Their skilled craftsmanship together with their old machines, where not every stroke is exact and precise, gives us fabrics with life in them. Completely perfect fabrics made by computerised equipment don’t have that living feel. It is the tiny imperfections and irregularities that give life to a fabric,” says Fjällräven’s designer Thomas Håkansson, at the same time as he shows us the difference by – yes – rubbing his forefinger and thumb together.

I

n many ways, a tour of Abraham Moon & Sons’ premises is like visi ting a museum of industrial history. They haven’t changed their methods since the industrial revolution, or at least not since they founded the company

56

in 1837. Sure, a few processes have been mechanised, but even in these cases there is always a person standing behind the machine. Some methods might feel rather old-fashioned, but they have been tried and tested over the decades and have shown to be the best and most efficient. Kevin Simpson empties two large sacks of dyed wool, one yellow and one blue, and lets it get sucked up a large tube. It is trans ported up to the top of an eight-metre-high silo-like room. From the ceiling, the wool drifts down to the floor and in this process the two colours are combined. “This is actually quite a new method. It’s about 50 years old I think. Before this we put the wool on the floor and mixed it by hand, but this gives us a more even mix of the colours. Mixing more colours gives the yarn a deeper and richer hue. A good example of this is the yarn used in the apparently green fabric for the trousers in Fjällräven’s Numbers collection. It is

actually made from five different colours of wool fibres spun together. The reason why the wool fabrics that many think are the best in the world come from a humble little village outside Leeds was initially to do with water and transport. Guiseley is located between the Aire and Wharfe rivers that are known for their soft water that is perfect for wool production. Then, at the same time as the mill started manufacturing wool, a new railway line was built directly behind it. In the beginning, Abraham Moon bought washed and carded wool from the surrounding farms, which he then sold at the markets in Leeds. In 1868 he built a three-storied mill on Netherfield Road, the same address as today’s mill, and began large-scale wool production. But the story could have had a different ending when Abraham Moon was tragically killed in a horse-and-cart accident in 1877. His son Isaac, however, took over the mill, which

almost went under in 1902 after it burnt down in a fire. Soon after, England found itself fighting in World War I, which paradoxically enough was good news for the survival of the mill – the British Army and Navy needed durable woollen uniforms for the young men who were going off to war. In 1930, the Moon family sold the business to designer and wool producer Charles H Walsh. Today, almost a century later, Abraham Moon & Sons is still enti rely owned by the Walsh family, and now forth-generation John Walsh is both primary shareholder and CEO.

T

radition isn’t only found in the machinery and pro duction processes, it is just as much in the hands of the people who work here. Dyeing master Tim Bailey has been mixing pigments for 28 years, and spinner Peter Foster, 72, should have retired many years

ago but his knowledge is still needed. Silvia Schofield peddles out metre after metre of tweed and checks its quality constantly with both her eyes and her fingertips. She has been doing this since she left school about 40 years ago. And before her, her mother Beatrice did the same from 1960 until she retired in 1985. But even if production methods have been modernised and trends have come and gone it is the considerable cloth archive that is one of the mill’s greatest assets, along with the personnel. In principle, samples from all designs and fabrics produced have been saved since the late 1800s and it is no problem for Burberry, for example, to place an order for a fabric that looks and feels like one made more than 100 years ago. One of the oddest orders received so far came from Ralph Lauren, where one of their designers had found an old tweed jacket from the 1930s in a second-hand store that he wanted reproduced. Abraham Moon &

Sons managed to produce an exact copy of the fabric and it is now used in modern collections. “Authenticity and craftsmanship are becoming more and more important. In these times of synthetic materials and printed patterns, there are many people who want to go back to traditional craftsmanship. Something that might look the same at a distance as something that is mass produced has an entirely different feel when you rub it between your fingers,” says Martin Aveyard. Thomas Håkansson continues: “When we created Fjällräven Num bers it was important that we used real materials, not just materials that looked real. And these wool fabrics with all their interwoven tradition and craftsmanship are undeniably real.”

ur origins are in the town of Örnsköldsvik, or Övik as it is also called, which is located right where civilisation and the wilderness meet. This is where Åke Nordin founded Fjällräven at home in his basement in 1960 – and it is with Åke’s energy that we have created the Övik family of products. The base of the collection consists of well-made shirts, durable trousers, comfor table hoodies and picot sweaters that suit an outdoor-inspired lifestyle. Övik also has popular classics such as Räven Jacket that was launched in the beginning of the 1980s, and also exciting newcomers such as Övik 3-in-1 Jacket in G-1000 Eco. Base 62

and mid-layer garments are primarily made from natural fibres such as wool and cotton. Other than this, most Övik products are made from our functional outdoor fabric G-1000. Fjällräven’s hometown is located in the province of Ångermanland on the High Coast, one of Sweden’s most beautiful hiking areas. Just around the corner you can find coastal mountains, deep forests and a beautiful archipelago. These give a special pulse and atmosphere to Örnsköldsvik. Clothing in the Övik family makes outdoor life a natural and green part of everyday living.

A shirt is just as useful in town as it is in the countryside at the weekend. When we make shirts, we focus on durability, functionality and timeless ness.” Tell us about the classic Övik shirt. “With the Övik Shirt we have created a timeless garment where we focus on checks and fit. We have two fits depending on how the shirt is to be used, Regular or Comfort Fit. A good checked pattern can catch the eye and be the reason why someone buys a shirt. That is what you see first and you often follow your heart when buying clothes.” Tell us about the process of creating a shirt. “We test all our shirts carefully out in the field to make sure we have chosen the right materials. Both when trekking and in everyday life. We then make improvements on the garment based on the feedback we receive from our test team.” Why is a shirt the perfect trekking garment? “You can roll up the sleeves of a shirt and open it up for ventilation. Almost all our shirts have the feature that you can secure rolled up sleeves in place. But it is also important that shirts used for trekking are made from fast-drying fabric and that they protect their wearer from the sun’s dangerous rays.”

I

t is a powerful feeling, wearing a piece of history. A design that has become timeless, together with smart features that continue to be appreciated by outdoor enthusiasts several decades after they revolutioni sed the industry. Our G reenland series is unique in this respect as it was the f irst chapter in the story of Fjällräven’s outdoor clothing. It all started with a Scandinavian clim bing expedition to Greenland in 1966, for which Fjällräven supplied tents and back packs. When the participants returned home they were not happy with how the outdoor clothing of the times functioned. How could 68

better clothing be developed? Based on the ideas of these alpinists, Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin developed a climbing jacket. It was to be flexible, durable, weather resistant and fast drying. He used a piece of tent fabric and waxed it with beeswax and paraffin to make the jacket more waterproof. The Greenland Jacket was launched in 1968 and with its smart features it quickly became very popular among climbers. Today it is an icon that has been joined by trousers, backpacks, bags and shirts. All Greenland products are made from our functional material G-1000. History lives on.

Greenland

Henrik Andersson, Head of Innovation and Design at Fjällräven

Greenland was the start of Fjällräven’s collection of outdoor garments and right from the beginning it set the standard when it comes to durability and functionality. Ever since its launch it has in a way been the very basis of our collec tion. Today many people are still using their Greenland Jackets that were made back in the 1960s and 70s, which is living proof of the versatility and longevity of both the design and materials used.” Why is the Greenland Jacket such a timeless garment? “It is because the jacket’s design is totally based on function. There are no frilly or unnecessary details. I really like the hand pockets. The pockets with flaps keep things in place and the pockets behind them work as wind protectors for cold hands.” How does the Greenland series inspire your work with design and product development at Fjällräven? “When we develop new products, such as backpacks, tents, clothing etc., we always have the same basic philos ophy as when the Greenland Jacket was first developed. We base our designs on the demands and challenges of outdoor life and create prod ucts that are as functional and durable as possible. We know that we have succeeded when a product is still being used and loved after 10 or 20 years.”

Little but strong 37 years ago, Swedes were having back problems. One man saw the answer. It was called Kånken.

S

chool yards and textbooks. Daytrips and packed lunches. The smell of summer forests or crisp winter air with a backpack on your back. For many Swedes who grew up in the 1980s, Kånken is a vivid childhood memory. But why did an entire generation sud denly start using Fjällräven’s charming little backpack? At the end of the 1970s, new statistics showed that close to 80% of the Swedish population had at some point experienced back pain, and the problem was becoming apparent in increasingly younger age groups. One of the reasons behind this, according to the experts, was the popularity of shoulder bags at the time. If you could shift the weight of schoolbooks from one shoulder to both, back problems would hopefully be

alleviated. One person who followed this debate in Sweden with great interest was Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin. Ten years earlier he had revolutionised the climbing world by creating the Greenland Jacket. Now it was time again. Together with the Swedish Scouting Association he designed an affordable and functional backpack with plenty of space for school books and binders. The weight of the backpack was evenly distributed over both shoulders – and back problems in Sweden decreased. The backpack Kånken was launched in August 1978. Today, it is a classic that is used all over the world. The original is still going strong and we have added new models to the range over the years. Have a look below.

Tested for the future by the future

At the Swedish Outdoor Association’s all-weather preschools, children spend as much of their days as possible outdoors. This is where we test our kids’ collection.

A

group of preschool children scamper up a large pile of snow. A few seconds later they are sit ting on small sleds sliding

down the side. Every morning they meet for breakfast in a tepee a stone’s throw away from the preschool. In the middle of the tepee is a fireplace and there is plenty of room around it for the children. There is a schedule on the wall with the word “winter” written in the Sami language, Finnish, Tornedals Finnish and Swedish. But most of the children’s time is spent outside the tepee. We are at the outdoor preschool named Myggan in Kiruna. Outdoor preschools and schools are run by the Swedish Outdoor Association, and the idea is that children spend their everyday life outdoors where all of their learning and development takes place. This year, the Outdoor School is celebrating 30 years and there are more than 200 schools and preschools operating in Sweden today. They write in their programme: “Children who get the chance to get out into nature learn to appreciate and take care of their 74

environment. The world’s best classroom – for sustainable development in practice.” At the same time as the parent organisa tion is turning 30, the cooperative preschool Myggan in Kiruna is turning 20. “It is very close to my heart that so many children have been schooled in an outdoor and environmentally conscious manner through our outdoor schools. Here at Myggan preschool we have spent 20 years giving children lovely memories they will have throughout their lives,” says Kerstin Andersson, CEO for the Swedish Outdoor Association’s Outdoor Schools Development. Since 2013, Fjällräven has supported the Outdoor Schools by, among other things, offering discounted prices on outdoor clothing to teachers. Some of the children at the preschools have also helped test different items of clothing; these outdoor schools are the perfect test environment for us when we are developing the Fjällräven kids’ collection. “We are so pleased that Fjällräven supports our outdoor schools. The vast majority of our time is spent outdoors so we need really good outdoor clothing,” says Kerstin Andersson.

jällräven’s first specialised travelling garments were laun ched in the 1970s but ever since the 1960s our tents have been on expeditions and adventures around the world. We have travelled to all the corners of the globe and continued to develop products that are adapted for dif ferent climates, environments and seasons. Safaris and jungle trips, for example, often require single-coloured, lightweight, airy and comfortable clothing with smart details and pockets for carrying equipment such as maps and binoculars. We also work

with creating several areas of functionality in one and the same garment. This can involve removable sleeves and trouser legs, so that your trousers can be transformed to shorts and your jacket to a vest. Many of our travel garments are made from the material MT, Micro Travel. Travelling to exotic environments often involves packing lightly. A little Cessna plane or a jeep with limited baggage space dictates how much you can pack. Nothing can be unnecessarily big or weigh too much. With Fjällräven’s travel garments you have all the functionality you need.

Akka Dome – Free-standing tent with high comfort level and good storage solutions

Protection in all weather

A functional and hardwearing tent is essential for your rest in the outdoors. Since 1964 we have been developing and refining our knowledge in maximising recovery – no matter what the weather or season is. This is why Fjällräven’s tents are well known and much appreciated for their smart features and easy handling.

Ventilation Ventilation openings placed at both high and low points for good air circulation.

Multiple entrances Two vestibules and two entrances simplify life in a tent when living with several other people.

Volume Pre-shaped poles increase the volume inside the tent.

Staying organised Large gear loft hanging from the inner ceiling and mesh pockets in the walls make it easy to stay organised.

Self-standing Akka Dome stands on its own. Use tent pegs and guylines to anchor the tent to the ground.

Storage space Akka Dome has unusually large vestibules given that it is a dome tent – perfect for storing equipment. In 2010, Akka Dome was named one of the best outdoor products – all categories – by Sweden’s leading outdoor magazine Utemagasinet.

Akka Endurance – Maximum strength for safe year-round use in all environments

Flexibility Entrances on both sides make it easier to organise your equipment. It also means that you can choose which entrance to use based on the prevailing weather conditions.

Stable construction The tunnel construction with different length poles ensures the tent offers outstanding stability. (Akka Endurance 2 and Akka Endurance 3 have three poles. Akka Endurance 4 has four poles.)

Ventilation Large ventilation openings at both ends provide maximum air circulation. All of the openings are protected with mosquito netting.

Durability Reinforced bottom edge for extra durability where it is needed most. 78

Staying organized Large vestibules with clotheslines and excellent storage solutions in the inner tent.

When producing a fleece sweater, wool sweater or other mid layer garment, we continue a proud tradition of developing clothing that functions in the great outdoors. And it’s not just about retaining heat, it’s also the details that allow a fleece sweater, for example, to withstand the abrasion of carrying a backpack or be well ventilated. Functional, durable materials are the ones

that retain their shape, wash after wash, adventure after adventure. And of course, style and quality of workmanship are important factors as well. Many things contribute to making a sweater a favourite sweater – we hope that you will find your next outdoor favourite here.

Up to 160 metres of sewing thread can be used on a single Fjällräven shirt! This is because the seams at the sides and on the pockets are double and triple stitched to ensure that the shirt will last for many years of active use. Materials are also carefully selec ted to ensure that they can withstand abrasion and repeated washing, be comfortable to wear and easy to take care of. Practical pockets, ventilation holes and buttons that keep rolled-up sleeves in place are other examples of details that make our shirts so highly appreciated.

Trousers with a long life

Of all the clothing that fills a wardrobe of outdoor wear, it is usually the trousers that have the most stories to tell. Worn knees and shiny-with-use buttons bear witness to extended adventures along trekking routes in the mountains and forests.

Our first outdoor trousers were released in 1970 and since then we have worked to refine the cuts, details and materials used so you can enjoy the outdoors in all its changing forms. Fjällräven trousers are extremely hard-wearing, comfortable to move in and

packed with smart features – the pockets are where you need them, and ventilation holes and other practical details make life easier when you are outdoors.

Barents Pro Trousers – Many details and practical features Mid waist that is higher at the back so it sits comfortably under a backpack. Double leg pockets for com passes, multitools and other items needed close at hand. Large leg pocket with room for a map, and an inside mesh phone pocket.

Practical axe pocket means you are always ready for serious woodland life.

Technical, pre-shaped knees and rear for excellent freedom of movement despite the relatively slim fit.

Because all women are not created equally we have come up with a new fit for our trousers. Sara Wiland, Product Developer at Fjällräven

Curved fit

Comfortable fit for our favourite models

Women looking for comfortable outdoor trousers should check out Curved Fit.   Curved Fit is designed for women who need a more accentuated waist and a little extra width over the rear and thighs. This gives a more comfortable pair of trousers that sits better on certain figures, without being tight or having a gap at the back of the waist.   Curved Fit complements our traditional Regular and Comfort fits. Popular trousers Övik are now available in two women’s versions; Övik Trousers W with a regular fit and Övik Trousers Curved W with a curved fit. The same applies to trekking trousers Keb Trousers W and Nikka Trousers W.

ACCESSOries We make hats and beanies for all sea sons and climates and we also have gloves, though primarily in our Hunting collection. The headgear range features warm knitted beanies, wind-protecting caps and insulated hats for winter excursions in the bitter cold. There are lighter beanies, caps and headbands for the warmer seasons too.

We also have hats and caps in ventilated and quick-drying material such as MT and G-1000. They protect against the sun during outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, hunting and fishing, and are also suitable when travelling in warmer countries.

AT NATURE'S SERVICE FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS 1968 Greenland Jacket Fjällräven’s first jacket is developed in coo peration with members of the Greenland expedition. The jacket is made from a du rable fabric that is too heavy for Fjällräven’s lightweight tents but, when impregnated with beeswax and paraffin, proves to have excellent functional properties. The fabric is called g-1000 and the impregnation Greenland Wax.
