he same four rental companies, in the same order, are at the top of this year’s IRN-100, but that doesn’t mean that nothing has changed from last year. Distil the hundreds of numbers on the following pages, and you come up with some inescapable broad conclusions: Japanese and US rental companies grew at a modest rate last year, while the Europeans were rapidly expanding through acquisitions and Greenfield openings. Of the fifteen companies who grew by over 20% in 2007 (see Table 9), 11 were European and just two were from the US (and one of these is a party and events player, Classic Party Rentals). It was the big national and multi-national European rental companies who grew most rapidly in 2007, companies like GAM and HUNE of Spain, Loxam, Ramirent, Cramo, Boels, Speedy Hire and

– and the vast amounts of capital expenditure on expanding their fleets. Overall, rental revenues at the top 100 companies rose by 9%. Big currency swings make comparisons with the 2006 figures difficult, with both the UK pound and the US dollar losing 10% of their value against the euro between December 2006 and December 2007. ‘Corrected’ for these price fluctuations, and actual revenues grew by 14% to €28.2 billion (see Table 1). (This currency question needs to be kept in mind when you look at the results for the US and UK companies on the list – revenues may have risen slightly in a company’s own currency, even if they show a fall in terms of euros.)

Revenues at the top five reflect the absence of any mega-mergers among the top four, with corrected total rental revenues growing 8%. The rapid growth of the biggest European renters, together with the effects of the Algeco-Williams Scotsman acquisition (Algeco Scotsman is now ranked number 5), means that top 10 revenues grew at double the rate at 17%. Capital expenditure was also healthy in 2007, increasing over an already great year in 2006. The 25 largest spenders in 2007 invested €5.5 billion in new equipment in 2007, 8% more than in 2006. increase is nearer 12%. It can be said with some certainty that next year’s survey will not see the same increase. There are 12 companies that were not in last year’s list. The largest of these is Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi – ranked 34. This is a Caterpillar dealer in Japan that operates six rental companies in the country. Two European crane companies also make the list – Sarens and Pekkaniska. The latter is also heavily into aerial platform rentals and is growing rapidly in eastern European markets from its Finnish base. Even so, that still represents a highly fragmented industry. This year’s survey is interesting for what it reveals about the growth of Europe’s rental business. In the coming years we can anticipate some really dramatic moves at the top as the big players – particularly in the US – start to buy each other. Until then, Europe IRN is where the action is.
