College of Pharmacy
Spring 2015
The University of Florida College of Pharmacy
1923-2015 The College was founded with the assistance of pharmacists in the Florida Pharmacy Association. The College of Pharmacy enrolled its first class of 43 students on September 10, 1923. The school was housed in Science Hall, which is now Flint Hall, and in Peabody Hall. In 1927, the Chemistry-Pharmacy Building, now Leigh Hall, was occupied by the faculty and students of the College of Pharmacy. The College of Pharmacy has been a part of the Health Science Center since the Pharmacy building was dedicated on April 16, 1962. Dr. Townes Randolph Leigh, head of the Department of Chemistry, was appointed the first Director of the School of Pharmacy. He later was named the first Dean of the College of Pharmacy in 1925. Dr. Perry A. Foote served as Director of the School of Pharmacy from 1939 to 1949 and the second Dean of the College of Pharmacy from 1949 to 1967. Dr. Kenneth F. Finger was Dean from 1968 to 1978. Dr. Michael A. Schwartz served for eighteen years as the fifth Dean of the College of Pharmacy. In June 1996, Dr. Schwartz retired as Dean of the College to return to teaching as a member of the faculty. Dr. William H. Riffee became the sixth Dean of the College of Pharmacy , serving seventeen years since 1996. The College is proud to have Dr. Julie Johnson named as the seventh Dean, and the first woman to hold the appointment in the College’s 90-year history.

The curricula and the degrees offered by the College of Pharmacy have changed over the years, demonstrating the dynamic character of pharmaceutical education. Three degrees were offered by the College of Pharmacy in the early years: the Graduate in Pharmacy (Ph.G.), the Pharmaceutical Chemist (Ph.C.), and the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (B.S. in Pharmacy). The Ph.C. and Ph.G. degrees were discontinued in 1927 and 1933, respectively. Thereafter, the B.S. in Pharmacy degree was the only undergraduate degree granted until 1986 when the first entry-level, four-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degrees were awarded. From 1977 to 1986, Doctor of Pharmacy degrees were granted to students who completed a two-calendar year program after completion of the five-year B.S. in Pharmacy degree. In the fall semester 2002, the college implemented a distance education program including campuses in Jacksonville, Orlando, and St. Petersburg. This technologically advanced program significantly increased student pharmacist enrollment. A working professional Doctor of Pharmacy program and selected graduate programs offered by distance education technology, have established the college as the leader in quality distance education programs in pharmacy. In 1931, the College of Pharmacy awarded the first Doctor of Philosophy degree. At that time the College of Pharmacy was the first in the Southeast and one of four or five in the United States to offer the Doctor of Philosophy degree in pharmacy.

Spring 2015
The College of Pharmacy became the first coeducational undergraduate college on campus, in 1935, 12 years before the university became co-educational. Women students in the college have become the majority, compromising approximately 60 percent of the admitted classes over many years. In Fall 2012, UF extended its pharmacy programs in Orlando as an integral part of the new UF Research and Education Center as part of the Lake Nona Medical City. To meet the growing need of training in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, the College of Pharmacy offers several online M.S. programs to working professionals across North America. More than 1,000 graduates have completed our award-winning forensic science, pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical toxicology programs. M.S. programs in applied pharmacoeconomics, pharmacy regulation, medication safety medication therapy management and clinical pharmacy are now offered. The College of Pharmacy has a proud history of achievement and a distinguished alumni who continue to demonstrate the high quality of their education and training
