The Trinity Lutheran Gathering in Faith, Living in Hope, Serving in Love . . . Blown by the Spirit

Volume 72 Issue 11 November 2016

REFORMATION SUNDAY—OCTOBER 30 On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed a list of 95 theses (items to be debated) on the door of the church at Wittenberg. His intent was to reform his church, the Roman Catholic Church. But, the Church was not ready for the reforms Luther had in mind, and the foundations of today’s Lutheran Church were laid. On Sunday, October 30, our Trinity family will gather for worship at 9:00 and 11:00 for our Reformation Festival Services to remember how our Lutheran heritage began.

REMEMBER TO WEAR RED!

Some of our members will share their thankfulness for God’s blessings in their lives, and our choirs and Praise Team will lift up their voices and music in thanksgiving to our great God, who blesses us each day with gifts beyond measure, during a beautiful blended service of music and praise. Let us all gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing on our families and our world.

News From the Pastor Natural Systems Academy Pastor Paul attended the first of many sessions of the Natural Systems Academy in Chicago this past month. When Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton became the bishop of the ELCA, she brought with her the Natural Systems Academy to help the development of healthy congregations and pastoral leadership in the ELCA. Each Synod is to have trained people to do this work in the synods. Bishop Rodger Prois has asked Pastor Paul to attend this training on behalf of the Western Iowa Synod. Vision and Purpose: As we manage change while moving ahead, we are called to mature and less anxious relationships that handle differences, enable thoughtful listening and pursue the capacity to deal with difficult topics and decisions. In our congregations, as within all our lives, the way we treat one another is the significant factor in witness and service. The Academy: This is a four year structured engagement with family systems theory, theology and clinical work. Participants are expected to be present at all seminars throughout the four years. The next three sessions will be January 8-11, 2017, April 23-26, 2017 and June 25-28. As the training continues I will be helping the synod develop teams that will assist congregations as they work through some of the challenges of ministry in their locations.

PASTOR PAUL TO SERVE AS INTERNSHIP SUPERVISOR

Shari Schwedhelm is a student from Luther Seminary who will be serving as an Intern Pastor at Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, IA and Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, IA. I have been asked by Bishop Prois and Luther Seminary to be her Internship Supervisor for the next year. This is considered an off-site Internship, which means that she will serve those two congregations and her expenses will be paid for by those congregations, and I will simply meet with her weekly following our Text Study with the other pastors to guide her in this learning experience. Shari will begin as of November 1, 2016 and I will attend the “Service of Beginning” at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa. We will keep Shari and these two congregations in our prayers during this next year.

Cash donations are always welcome LUTHERAN DISASTER RESPONSE has requested donations to help the Hurricane Matthew victims. All money received is distributed in the United States, as well as other countries such as Haiti. If you would like to donate to help the victims from Hurricane Matthew, please designate on your envelope. SUNDAY IN THE PARKING LOT WAS A SUCCESS! Thank you to everyone who helped throughout the day and to the Praise Band for providing awesome music. We had plenty of beans this year, so no mad dashes to the store for more. All of the chips and a lot of the bottled water from RAGBRAI were used. It was a great day, and we even had Abraham Lincoln there!! The Trinity Lutheran - November 2016

FOOD BASKETS Please remember to bring non-perishable food items for our Food Basket which will be donated to Midtown Family Community Center. DOLLAR SUNDAY/FOOD BASKET SUNDAY - NOV. 6 Don’t forget to bring your $1 on Sunday, November 6, for our Dollar Sunday donation to the neighborhood dinner in December. The total raised so far from our Dollar Sunday is $992.17, so we are a little behind our $1,500 goal! We appreciate your donations each month to help make this dinner possible for our neighbors. BACK DOOR MINISTRY The grocery cart has been retired, but there is a basket in the narthex for your canned food donations. We also welcome any contributions you would like to make. All funds are distributed to people in need who come to our back door. SOLES 4 SOULS Don’t forget when you are cleaning out your closets to donate your old shoes. Remember, they can be any size and in any shape. They are refurbished and donated. There is a box in the narthex in which to put your shoes. Our congregation has donated 1,110 pairs of shoes!!! Thanks to Jeri & Russ Snyder for transporting the shoes. PURSES & BAGS As you are cleaning out your closets, remember we will take your old purses, bags and backpacks. Thank you to Gail Anfinson for taking these items to the City for the homeless program. HOTEL TOILETRIES We continue to collect hotel toiletries to be distributed to various organizations. UP FROM THE EARTH The growing season is about over for this year. Thank you much for over 300 pounds of produce, which was donated to help the hungry people of Siouxland. Thank you also to Deb Martin for taking the produce to the food pantries. WARMING SHELTER, located at 703 West 5th Street, is a temporary emergency shelter during the winter months for those who are homeless. Trinity is aware of their need for food and other supplies and has started a fund for these needs. If you would like to donate to The Warming Shelter, you can mark your donation as such and you will be given credit on your envelope number. For more information on how you can volunteer in other ways, please contact Pastor Paul, who is on their board, or Joe Twidwell at 712-253-9273. Can give through Easy Tithe. CLOTHING DRIVE FOR VETERANS There is a basket in the narthex to put packages of (new) underwear and socks (all sizes). If you have other clothing that you would like to donate, that would be great as well. Pastor Lil is especially looking for outer wear such as coats, jackets, sweaters, hats and gloves, but all clothing would be appreciated, such as pants, shirts, etc. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR MISSION PROJECTS!

NEIGHBORHOOD CHRISTMAS DINNER SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18

Trinity will again host the Neighborhood Christmas Dinner. This dinner provides many opportunities for all of us to be involved with families in our neighborhood through wrapping of presents, joining in a meal with our neighbors, food preparation, food serving, music and clean-up. The Neighborhood Dinner is a partnership activity with Midtown Community Center and Pastor Lil. Many of our members have been involved in this project in the past several years. Each and everyone involved felt it was one of the most joyous experiences in which they have been involved. Please watch for the sign-up sheet starting on November 27. The dinner will be held on Sunday, December 18, with preparation day on Saturday, December 17. Thank you everyone for your contributions during our monthly Dollar Sunday collection for the dinner. This process provides us with ample money to purchase the food without asking in December for last minute contributions. Planning ahead truly does pay off!

BAPTIZED AT TRINITY On Sunday, October 23, we celebrated new life in the church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism of Sierra Yvonne OShea, who was born on May 12, 2016, to Colin & Kim OShea. Pastor Paul, Sierra and her grandmother, Yvonne Church, are pictured to the left. Sierra’s baptismal candle was lit from the Christ the King candle holder given in memory of Yvonne’s mother, Betty Kloeppel, Sierra’s great-grandmother, when she went to Heaven 10 years ago. Pastor Paul reminded us that the flame of love and faith continues from generation to generation.
