The Timber Innovators COMPANY HISTORY
Company History 1994
ATS Timber begins trading as ‘Artline’ under the management of Walter Simmons (a structural engineer) and his eldest son (a printer by trade) selling ink supplies to the printing industry. Shortly after a younger son, David (a joiner by trade) joined them and started selling native and exotic timbers to the joinery trade.
1996 1998
Company amends name to ‘Artline Timber Supplies’ to reflect the growing range of timber products. Paul Simmons, the current General Manager joins the team after 14 years in the construction industry. The rapidly growing business is now selling to a broad customer base including joiners, aluminum joiners, and school woodwork shops. Having outgrown their premises, ‘Artline Timber Supplies’ moves to large new warehouse.

The Timber Innovators COMPANY HISTORY
20 years of timber innovations…
2000 2001
‘Artline Timber Supplies’ is further refined to ‘ATS Timber’ with a tag line ‘Quality – Service – Satisfaction’; key values the company was getting built on. Difficulties in the supply of native timbers lead to a transition to local exotic and imported timbers and the development of new markets for these. Onsite milling begins to produce a wide range of products to meet growing demands from the market. The first of the third generation join the company.
2002
ATS Timber moves to a new green-fields 7 acre site that was custom built to meet the demands for larger and more modern manufacturing, processing and warehousing space.

Tip
The above sizes are marketed as a non-verified product. This is mainly due to the fact these sizes usually incorporate a large proportion of the low density area of a log, which results in lower stiffness than is required to meet a SG8 wet grade.

Amazing facts
1
Spruce gained early fame as an aircraft and boat building material because of its high strength to weight ratio and shock absorbing qualities.
Great resilience and elasticity properties
2
3
It has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any timber species in the world
4
Every year a large Norway Spruce tree is used at the Rockefeller Centre in New York as a Christmas Tree.
Some spruce trees can grow to over 60m high with a canopy spread up to 12m wide.
5
Spruce trees can live up to 1000 years
7
Accepts & holds paint & stain finishes very well, requiring fewer coats than other timber because of its light, uniform colour
It seasons readily, and, once dry, is stable with very little tendency to warp or twist
8
The Wright Brother’s first aircraft was made of Spruce
Old Tjikko, a 9,550 year old Norway Spruce tree in Sweden, is considered the oldest-living clonal tree in the world.

Compliance NZBC Clause B2 Durability
As untreated, Kingfisher Spruce has a durability rating of 4 (perishable/non-durable) which is the same as untreated Radiata Pine. ATS Timber recommends that SG8 & SG10 untreated timber is only used in ‘low-risk designs’ and is signed off by appropriate authorities.
ALTERNATIVE Solution
Alternative Solution: “An alternative solution is a building design, of all or part of a building, that demonstrates compliance with the Building Code… The Building Code being a performance based code, allows for innovation and uniqueness.”
OUR Recommendation
We recommend that Kingfisher Spruce SG8 & SG10 in UT is only used in ‘low-risk’ designs unless authorized by appropriate authorities.

New Zealand Standards (NZS) All information contained within this publication has been prepared in accordance with all applicable and current NZ Standards. A brief summary of the NZ Standards for timber are as follows: NZS

NEW ZEALAND TIMBER GRADING RULES
This Standard gives the requirements for timber and wood-based products for particular uses in building so that they can be expected to give acceptable performance during the life of the building. To that end this Standard covers the materials themselves and aspects of design and construction that are relevant to their performance in use.
Replaces amendment 3 which was found to contain errors ... The amendment provides for lower design stresses for non verified timber. It recognises deficiencies in sole reliance on existing timber grading methods as a means of reliably establishing the characteristic strength and stiffness properties of sawn timber. The amendment also provides design stresses for new verified timber grades.
Replaces NZS3604:1999. Provides methods and details for the design and construction of timber-framed structures not requiring specific engineering design. This Standard applies to residential buildings up to three-storeys high including multi-residential buildings, some commercial buildings and freestanding, uninhabited garages.
This Standard describes procedures for the initial evaluation and daily quality control requirements necessary to ensure that timber has the structural properties claimed for it. The procedures apply both to timber that is visually and machine stress graded.
Establishes visual grading rules for the selection of timber into quality classes. Four types of grades have been specified. Provision has also been made for new crop radiata pine.
NZS
3640:2003
CHEMICAL PRESERVATION OF ROUND AND SAWN TIMBER
This Standard sets out requirements for the preservative treatment and identification of timber to provide protection from decay and insect attack including marine borers in all likely exposure conditions throughout New Zealand, based on six hazard classes that are described in this Standard.

The Timber Innovators TIMBER VERIFICATION PROGRAM
Timber Verification Program
Verification License No. GV108 Our Weka SG8™, Kingfisher SG8™ Pine , Kingfisher Spruce™ and Kea SG8 Douglas Fir ranges undergo rigorous proof testing for bending stiffness (how elastic it is) and bending strength (how much weight it can take without breaking). Every piece is subject to a visual override to ensure it meets No.1 Frame visual requirements according to NZ Standards. This verified program allows for greater scope in design as it removes the previous reliance on visual grading as being the only control of grade on structural timber.
