The Steward The Feast of St. Benedict • July 17, 2016

It is [Christ] whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.-- Colossians 1:28b

Dear Family of Faith, Almost thirty years ago, there was a deep desire to celebrate our Patron’s Feast Day in a way that involved all our parishioners and all our neighbors. Benfest was born to fill that need. The first and foremost way to celebrate our St. Benedict’s feast day is at our Sunday Masses, but the goal to expand and have a gathering for our broader community has clearly been achieved! Since that initial Benfest celebration almost three decades ago, our feast day celebration has grown to include great music, food vendors, great drinks, a fun area for kids, and more. In fact, last year, we were written up in the Tribune because of our family-friendly atmosphere. It think it is safe to say that everyone finds a welcome spot at our Benfest celebration and that we as a parish are richer because of everyone’s presence. Please let me thank the huge team that has dedicated themselves to the planning and execution of our Benfest over the past six months. In the dead of winter, our Benfest team is already alive with planning and preparations for a great Feast Day event. A profound word of gratitude goes out to Jennifer Petrillo who has participated in our Benfest team for many years and has lead it for the past few years. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Jenni and all the dedicated

parishioners who serve on our Benfest Committee. Especially this year, with a huge influx of new and talented parishioners, our team served with excellence. A profound word of thanks! We are stronger because of your service. As we celebrate our Patron, St. Benedict, I would be remiss if I didn’t share a few words about our Patron. Born over 1600 years ago in 480, at the age of 20, Benedict left the hustle and bustle of the city life of Rome and found solace in the quiet of a monastery where he stayed for three years. It was here that Benedict grew in wisdom and holiness as he prayed and fasted and listened to the voice of God calling him to service. Because of his deep desire to dedicate himself to work and prayer, Benedict contributed more than anyone else to the rise of monasticism in the West. His Rule was the foundational document for thousands of religious communities in the Middle Ages, and to this day, The Rule of St. Benedict is the most common and influential Rule used by monasteries and monks. The influence of St Benedict produced “a true spiritual ferment” in

Europe, and over the coming decades his followers spread across the continent to establish a new cultural unity based on the Christian faith. Still today, we too would do well to rededicate ourselves to the discipline of work and prayer. It is a great mantra for us in our busy lives, to make sure we are taking time for both. Work and prayer, or “ora et labora”, is a powerful reminder that without taking time in prayer to thank God for all the good gifts that we have been given, we grow unappreciative, shallow, and disconnected from our creating God. Happy Feast Day. Also, on this feast day, it is a great joy for me to present to you, the beautifully crafted image of the St. Benedict Medal (see cover). A year or so ago, I was introduced to an artist from Michigan whom we commissioned to create the St. Benedict Medal. The artist, Mary Cotter, and I, emailed back and forth for a few months to zero-in on the final design which is the front and the back of the St. Benedict medal, painted with oil, on a piece of wood. With the help of photos that I emailed to her, Mary especially wanted to make sure that the colors she used for the medal, complement our beautiful stained glass windows. I think she got it right! When our Church was first built 100 years ago, the St. Benedict Medal adorned the top of the baldachin, or the great canopy over the high altar. It was done in a mosaic that was then inlaid into the marble façade of the

baldachin. In many ways, it was the first thing, along with the high altar and tabernacle, that caught your eye when you walked into our Church. With the renovation of the Church after the Second Vatican Council, our high altar and baldachin were taken down and we lost our connection to St. Benedict’s medal. With the help of our very talented artist, Mary, I am pleased to reintroduce St. Benedict’s medal into our Church. It will one day get mounted to the wall in our St. Benedict Shrine and we will share brochures that help everyone understand the letters on the medal that connect to the life and spirituality of St. Benedict. To read in more detail about the history of the Saint Benedict Medal, go to: http://parish.stbenedict.com/. Happy Feast Day! Again, thank you for the way that you will help your parish celebrate the feast day. As we all have seen and heard about in Europe and around our Country, our feast day is a big deal. It is the one day we get to celebrate the Saint whom we implore to intercede for us. Obviously we can and do petition Jesus and His Father directly, but how much more do we trust that our Patron, St. Benedict, intercedes for us to the Father and Son, on our behalf? Many a million prayers has St. Benedict brought on our behalf. Please continue to pray for me and know that I depend upon your prayers. In the service of Christ, Fr. Jason.

4 JUBILEE OF MERCY

RESENT How do we oppose the mercy of God? Certainly, that happens when we refuse to accept or share mercy. More subtly and perhaps more dangerously, it happens when we resent the forgiveness and the second chance that others receive. In doing so, we align ourselves with death, not new life. “But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.” (Luke 15:32)

CLW Gospel Thoughts

Shhh! Pay Attention! Today’s Gospel of Mary and Martha might be a bit confusing to the children. Isn’t Martha doing something good for Jesus - preparing to feed and provide for His comfort? Don’t I (child) have to help around the house when company comes over? The drama of this Gospel shows how to best be present to each other and God. Are we really giving ourselves and our time to God when we come to mass but don’t pay attention or fuss around? Illustrate this with the children by telling them when we come to church, we get cleaned up and put on our good clothes. If we don’t pay attention to the priest -- and if we bother other people who come to mass by making noise or kicking the pew or talking when we should be quiet -- are we really getting closer to God? Peace, Deacon Dave

Spiritual Dream Group

In this group we learn to become like a container of sacred space as a group to provide a secure connection between the individual’s inner world and the outer world. Spiritual dream work affirms that our (nocturnal) dreams offer us support in our spiritual journey. This work helps us towards living a guided life from within with the support of others and helps us to recognize the symbolic language of the soul. All dreamers are welcome and there is no experience necessary. I encourage anyone who has been interested in their dreams, but has not had the opportunity to share and explore them further to attend. This ongoing group will meet on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 pm until 9 pm in the basement of the rectory in the small meeting room. Session Dates: 8/1, 8/15, 9/19, 10/3. 10/17, 11/7, 11/21, 12/5, 12/19, 1/9/17, 1/23/17, 2/6, 2/20, 3/6, 3/20, 4/3, 4/17, 5/1, 5/15, 6/5, 6/19 Free will offering to St. Benedict Church: $5 Please contact Rachel at [email protected] if you plan to attend. Facilitator’s bio: Rachel Winborn has been working with dreams for 10 years. She is an artist and holds an MA and MFA in Fine Art. Best Wishes, Jonathan! Benedictine Sisters of Chicago

Over the past year serving as Associate Director of Music, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with a community as talented, committed, and rooted in faith here at St. Benedict. This August, I will take the next step in my musical career where I have accepted the position of Director of Music at St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette. While I am excited to begin this new opportunity, I am proud to reflect on the achievements of the St. Benedict Adult Choir this past year. In December 2015, after months of rehearsal, the Adult Choir performed Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Ravenswood Community Orchestra. The choir’s success and commitment with the Gloria allowed for the preparation of more difficult a cappella repertoire. The Paschal Triduum demonstrated the Adult Choir’s dedication as we prepared a large amount of music for Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday. Just recently, the Adult Choir received praise from Archbishop Cupich during the Celebration of the 65th anniversary of St. Benedict High School. The Adult Choir will continue to achieve success and grow in musical excellence and I urge all those in the St. Benedict community interested in joining to do so and experience what makes this group so special. Lastly, I want to especially thank Jeremy Kiolbassa and Fr. Jason Malave for their guidance and continued support during my time here at St. Benedict. -Jonathan Metzinger
