THE PRESCOTT MARSHALS’ CLUB

NEWSLETTER Summer 2016

A short update for you from the Club Office. What a La Vie weekend we had back in May. The introduction of the Italian theme with La Vita Rossa certainly gave the event the facelift that was intended. A paddock full of an eclectic mix of cars ranging from the “Beast of Turin” from 1911 right through to a La Ferrari from 2015 alongside a couple of Veyrons, a couple of F1 cars and of course for me the icing on the cake six delectable ERAs – fantastic! It certainly made a difference to the numbers through the door with record crowds. The Saturday was noticeably busier than previous years. The general ambience and atmosphere was back which was a noticeable step in the right direction. This was followed by the Midland Championship meeting at the end of June. A great event with a 4pm finish on the Sunday – fantastic! Although I wasn’t here as Maggie and I were on holiday it was good to hear that twenty five of you attended the Marshal training evening in July. This was funded entirely by the Club. Ciaran again looked after everyone very well. We are now starting to plan for the Midland Marshal training weekend which will be held at Prescott in March next year. Watch this space! I write this just after the Members and Cooper 70th Anniversary meeting. A good meeting, although a little quiet with regards to the crowd. We were blessed with a great selection of nearly one hundred Coopers of all varieties in our Paddock. Those of you who were here would have seen me competing for the first time for ten years. It’s been even longer since I last competed at Prescott. I really enjoyed myself and my times weren’t bad either. Nice to see proof that I haven’t lost it! I am so pleased that I didn’t pay any of you a visit on post during the meeting. Now that would have been embarrassing! Special thanks to Joy Hoyle and Roger Moran for trusting me with their lovely car. That’s all for now. I look forward to seeing you all at the September British Championship and Autumn Classic meeting in October. Thanks very much for your support. Stuart Webster General Manager

Cornwall’s Comments It seems somewhat scary that we are now over halfway through the hill climbing season – just where has the first half gone to? A big thank you to all the marshals who continue to turn up for the BOC events, every one of you is appreciated and it Is good from my point of view to see so many people walking through the signing- on door. I was asked again this year to be Chief Marshal for the Chateau Impney hill climb, this proved to be more eventful on the track than the previous year with Ed Burgess rolling his Bugatti and Nikki Cottrill’s Lotus bursting into flames. The Chateau is truly a wonderful event with some very rare cars and this year a couple from USA! We held the annual marshals training evening on 13th July in the Clubhouse with 25 people attending. Thanks to Adrian Mudge for organising the training content and Ciaran for once again doing an excellent job on the food front. It is Prescott’s turn to host the Midland Marshals Training Weekend next year so keep your eyes peeled for the dates which are to be finalised but will likely be in March. Just one observation on the hill - when you are flagging and preparing to bring the flag in, please leave it in the holder for as long as possible or hold it in the same position, so the post below you can still see the flag is out to avoid confusion. Remember a loud whistle just before putting the flag out or bringing it in. I look forward to seeing you on the hill soon Kevin Cornwall BOC Chief Marshal

For Sale Sorry but I'm unable to remember who asked me to sell a pair size 10 urban territory safety boots with metal toe caps in a used condition but plenty of life left in 'em. Best offer on the day secures – they cost £50-00 (on the box) so if you are interested see them at Prescott. All monies will go towards PMC funds. Thank you. JH

BRITISH MOTORSPORTS MARSHALS’ CLUB (BMMC)

I was asked if I would put together a brief introduction to the Club and the benefits it can offers. The BMMC is a club run by marshals for marshals, founded in 1957, we are the largest marshals club in the UK, with over 2200 members and can represent marshals in all forms of motorsport. The British Rally Marshals Club (BRMC) is incorporated within the Club for those interested in rallying. We also organise local social events. The Club has representation on a number of Motor Sports Association (MSA) committees, where we can work with and can influence areas which affect marshals and their duties. One such committee is the Sprint and Hillclimb Committee. We support the MSA marshals grading scheme and have MSA trained instructors available to assist at training days throughout the country. We can manage your MSA registration and grading as you gain experience. The Club's National Council and Regional Committee members are all volunteers. Each region has a committee to represent local marshals. The Midland Region has representatives covering training, volunteering, grading, membership, new marshal liaison, social events, taster days, regalia, rallying, each able to give local advice and help in their area of knowledge. A regional newsletter is published providing information and articles. We have an online volunteering system (one stop shop) where members can book meetings they wish to marshal anywhere in the country, we co-ordinate and liaise with organising clubs on your behalf. The club has a number of motorsport sponsors. This sponsorship enables us to offer a substantial discount on overalls and waterproofs to fully paid up members. We also have a range of BMMC branded clothing and regalia. When you sign on at a meeting you are covered by the MSA insurance, as a BMMC member you are also covered by our insurer from home to meeting and back home again. This also covers you marshalling abroad and at non-MSA licenced events. In addition we are able to offer annual overseas repatriation insurance at a considerably reduced cost. I marshal the Midlands sprints and hillclimbs regularly, please come and have a chat if you want to find out more or visit our website at www.marshals.co.uk. JF’s Travels Began April with MG car club sprint at Curborough using figure of eight circuit. I was MSA steward. Well organised meeting with no problems. Then a weekend at Gurston where I was assessing an upgrade of a clerk from trainee to Nat B. I find people who are going through this process are rather nervous when you first meet them but as they realise we are not there to catch them out they become more relaxed as the weekend goes on. I find I learn a lot as well as questions are asked by the trainee. Speed events are more difficult as there is not a lot of judicial so we usually get trainee to go to a kart meeting where we usually get plenty of judicial. Next two weekends have plenty of variety. Senior clerk of course at Silverstone Saturday then to rescue unit at Prescott Sunday and then MSA steward at Shelsley Walsh the next week and then steward at Castle Combe Bank Holiday Monday. Silverstone VSCC we had ten races with forty cars in each race and reserves and had to finish by six o'clock. One race was a handicap with forty cars started row by row with a flag. All had to be gone before first away returned. We finished at five minutes to six which says a lot for the team. Next day Prescott on rescue and I was able to relax. MSA steward at Shelsley was also quiet but Castle Combe was very busy. Live TV, many accidents and changing weather all helped to concentrate the mind. As race lengths were to times, it was possible to adjust to suit conditions. A completely different job. Off to Oulton Park to assess a clerk who is upgrading from trainee to National B race. I have to see him run the event including drivers’ briefings and do an interview which normally takes about two hours on all aspects of racing including protests and appeals. Very similar to my earlier one at Gurston but more action as it was a race meeting. Cadwell Park as operations clerk. Have to start all races and make sure the meeting runs to time. Saturday was most difficult with many incidents and Minis blowing up leaving much oil about. Journey on Friday afternoon was difficult. Left at 1330hrs and arrived at 1830hrs. All that time to do 160miles. M42 blocked but getting around Lincoln was the worst. By- pass has many traffic islands and each one had a mile jam approaching it. Hotel excellent and I actually used the prayer book provided. Sash window would not stay open so used bible to wedge it. Next FIA steward at Pau historic street race. Was a marshal at this event more than twenty years ago and little has changed. Flew Birmingham Lyon same day as French air traffic controllers went on strike but not too many problems. Then a long wait at Lyon for short flight to Pau. Airline was called HOP and the plane was so small that hand baggage was collected at bottom of ramp and given back as you came down the ramp on arrival. My fellow steward was coming from Monaco and due to the strike very few trains ran. He had a six hour coach journey and no refreshments or toilets. It had to call at all main stations as happens here when a problem occurs. Saturday was 26 degrees but a complete change on Sunday with 8 degrees and

heavy rain. A tornado came down the valley mid morning taking down tents and metal interlink fencing in the paddock. Heavy rain then persisted and all races were started under safety car. The last tornado like this was in 1968 and I was there then so they felt a certain amount of blame was justified. The lasting memories of Pau always are the Pyrenees covered in snow. Much better viewed from the small aircraft. Back to Rockingham as Steward with pick -up trucks on the Oval. They are averaging approx 140 miles an hour around the Oval. Very exciting weekend but very cold all weekend with no problems. Was due to be on rescue at Shelsley but last minute call from MSA sent me to steward a two day kart meeting. Having enough crew at Shelsley, I went karting. We finished Saturday 2100hrs and Sunday 1830hrs. Thirty five judicials and forty technical penalties. Technical penalties are when a discrepancy happens in Parc Ferme and it is usually an incorrectly positioned front fairing. Ten seconds is added to times in race and deletion of fastest time in practice. Most of the judicials were for contact and blocking. I got back to my hotel Saturday and the only food I could get was a sandwich from the garage. Think Shelsley may have been better bet. Next to Loton where the only problem was the weather. Next three weekends moving around UK-Ty Croes-Kirkistown and Pembrey. Went to Ty Croes with Kevin working on rescue. Excellent weather Saturday but a complete change on Sunday and the organiser had to abandon meeting just after lunch on Sunday with flooded track. Then to Kirkistown as Clerk of Course. Plenty to do. One physical assault and one verbal assault to deal with during the morning. Then after lunch during Formula Ford race, a wheel came off the car and went in through one window of marshals box and out through other side. Two marshals treated at circuit medical centre for minor injuries and one who was unconscious for a moment taken to hospital. The good news is he only suffered a broken nose and was not allowed to drive for two weeks. I had two days of meetings and in addition to car took trains. Number of railway companies used in two days:-Virgin Trains, Cross Country Trains, Chiltern Railways, First Great Western and London tube. Also London buses. Was then on rescue at Pembrey rallycross. Nothing to do but eighty four races in two days made for an exciting weekend. All this plus practice each day as well. Then to Chateau Impney which from my point of view was very enjoyable .The teamwork we had shows how we can all come together to make things work and I really did appreciate that. I also enjoyed the variety of cars entered. Then rescue at Loton. Very enjoyable weekend. It always amazes me how events clash through no fault of our own but when inept management decide to change dates. John Felix

Chairmans Chat I would like to place on record the kind donation to The Bugatti Owners' Club from Gwen Murphy to cover the cost of the new marshals' hut at Bridge. This is in memory of D.F.(Fred) Murphy who was a founder member of the P.M.C. and marshalled at Prescott and many other venues for some 50 years. Fellow member John Ayres was instrumental for the money coming to Prescott as it was itemised for another home who for whatever reason failed at the post. John, myself and Fred marshalled at the British G.P. for many years along with another fellow members Dave Orchard & Dave Wearing, not to count sprints, rallies and other hill climbs. The Wedding of the Year Timothy John Kempster & Wendy Jane Davis tied the knot on Saturday 16th July at the Spread Eagle Hotel, Thame, Oxfordshire. The two best men were Andy Mepham & Bill Searle, I was a bridesmaid !! Bridget and I were kindly looked after by Ray & Janet Cook for a couple of nights – thank you both. Other members present were Jade Claridge and later in the evening after a day at Prescott, Philip & Margaret Parkes. The famous “SMITH” family were at the evening do also. Bridget and I did give Tim and Wendy a couple of mugs with the P.M.C. logo and their date of marriage. Morgan Visit I'm pleased to offer the first TEN members who contact me a FREE visit to the Morgan works. We will be in the hands of Dixon-Smith a well known Morgan owner and club member. Date 23rd. August 10-15 for a 10-30 start. If interested give me a call on 01242 676848 or e-mail [email protected] Golf Day At Chippenham The annual golf day between Gurston and Prescott is set to take place on Sunday morning 27th November 2016 starting 10-00. Again the venue is provided by Peter & Wendy Claridge who run the golf course at Monkton Park, Chippenham, SN15 3PE. This is crazy golf so no need to be a professional. It's great fun with any profit going to the Stroke Association. The theme is to come along in a onsie or pay a small fine. Come back to me for more information if interested – thanks, JH.

Membership The membership as of 31st July stands at 124 which is 15 less than 2015. For the size of the venue it's still a cracking turnout. Thanks to all for your support. Please be proud of your club and show a windscreen sticker for the amazing price of £1-00 + look at the new lapel badges ordered for this year. British & Midland Championships – 23/24 April Nice to see old and new faces once again from the last meeting in 2015 time soon flies by to another year. Not a lot to say, as anything that happens on the hill is covered by Kevin. Marshals Draw - Mike Webb / Terri New / Chris Lane were lucky winners this time, believe it or not we don't sit there after you have gone changing the names – except for T.K that is!! Once again our thanks to the Bugatti Owners' Club for their kind donation. Cheers one and all, JH La Vie en Bleu / La Vita in Rosso – 28/29 May Great turn out of marshals for a dry weekend. As T.K. was away on holiday the whole weekend was quiet for all of us! Yet another excellent event with a lot of interesting motors only seen once or twice a year. Marshals Draw Jon Beard / Justin Walker / Sam Walker collected their draw items at the end of Sundays meeting. What are the percentages of a father and son winning on the same event? That's your lot, JH Midsummer Speed Fest – 25/26 June Yet another great turn out of Marshals as so many had opted for Goodwood we were rather pleased. Weather was iffy to say the least but it could have been worse. The barbecue went well on the Saturday evening following practice, down by 15 or so from last year, but 37 brave souls enjoyed their evening. The barbecue was supported by Steve & Pam Hemingway as a “THANK YOU” to all the marshals following Steve’s accident in April 2015 at Semi Circle. The Prescott ale found its way from Prescott brewery, yet another kind gesture from the owner Nathan McWattie. There was a raffle with prizes donated by members of your committee and fellow marshals. A grand total of £83.35 was collected. Thanks to Dave Riley standing to see fair play, but not sure how he won 10 prizes?? Thanks to the cooks, and last but by no means least, to Bridget & Angie for food preparation duties. Marshals Draw - H. Searle / A. Mepham / S. Walker were lucky this time, yet again draw prizes donated by the Bugatti Owners' Club. That’s it folks!! J.H.

Cooper 70th Anniversary & Members Meeting – 30 July A one day meeting which comes as a shock to the system. From all the whistles I heard during the morning session I bet you all thought that your lunch break would never come!! A smaller turn out than normal but Kevin & Phil sorted it all out. The girls sorted out the catering yet again, thanks to you all. As Tim Kempster was on honeymoon with lovely Wendy it was a pleasant day indeed..... Marshals Draw - Andrew Wilkinson / Tim Nicklin / Dave Orchard were drawn from the pile of tickets – well done. J.H.

Spring and Summer in the life of a typical club member Sunday 20th March 2016 MSA Steward Craven Motor Club Hullavington Sprint The first day of Spring saw me at a bitterly cold Hullavingdon Airfield for the second and final Craven MC Sprint. The final due to the venue having been sold by the MOD and moving in to private ownership for possible housing, another venue lost. Very good sixty plus entries for the mile and a half course ranging from a Suzuki Ignis Sport via a Ford Mustang to four Jedi's, who fought out FTD. Two practice runs and three competitive made up the competition and all over by three with prize presentation at half past. Almost had an eligibility protest to see if a MGB Sebring was correctly classed but sense, and I expect money, stopped this! Could not believe that the A429 was shut two miles from the venue with no diversions posted. Luckily out came my map and took to the lanes, and this time Kevin Cornwall was not with me! Sunday 3rd April 2016 MSA Steward Rissington Kart Club RAF Rissington Another quiet day from the Stewarding side. Front bumper contact seems to be improving although not liked by the Club. Weather fine for most of day and good entry for the main race of day, the 210 Challenge, although reliability meant very few finishers. Saturday 16th April 2016 MSA Steward Loton Park Heavy rain, flooding, thick snow, sun and that was just the journey up. Even Trevor Willis told me he almost turned round and went home! Long day for the marshals with five hours of practice and over four hours of competition thanks to a very healthy entry from the NHCA Motorcycles. FTD fell to Trevor Willis in 47.75 but the drive of the day must go to Alex Summers using his mothers 1098cc DJ Firehawk in 48.52, taking his class by 4 seconds. Weather stayed nice and track dried during the day. Terry and Tricia Davis had a new car to play with, an OMS TKD YV8, - went to chat a few times but every time I saw them they were either in the car or pouring over a computer screen, the

joys of a new toy. Had a wonderful couple of hours talking to Eddie Walder and Lee Corbet who must be the best commentator team a Hillclimb event could have. On the way home heard Cheltenham Town FC have returned to the Football League, bet Kevin Cornwall's dad was as pleased as I was. Sunday 17th April 2016 MSA Steward Loton Park What a difference a day makes. Despite the temperature gauge reading 1.0C all the way up the sun shone. Motorcycles were replaced with Caterhams and each Marshals point saw at least two bodies, well done Mudge. Red lights were being experimented at Posts 3 and 7 and I believe they work. Had a chance to walk the hill during the Church break and interesting to note how much green stuff is being used to try to cut times. What other sport could you run in to the British Champion standing by himself half way up the hill cheering on his parents, even though he was not competing. I stopped and had an interesting chat to Alex before continuing on. FTD today to Graham Wynn in his newly acquired ex John Bradburn Gould GR55 in 48.78. Will miss John, now BMW racing, but great to see the car going to a good home. Also had a chance to talk to Kevin Cornwall and Trevor Farmer manning the Rescue Units. A very enjoyable day and a reasonable 17.30 finish. Saturday/Sunday 24th/25th April 2016 Club Steward Prescott Great to catch up with you all and an excellent turn out. Hope you did not take too many days to thaw out, it was cold at times. What a weekend of hillclimbing and a brilliant start to the Championship. Saturday saw the Rescue Unit in action and pleased to hear afterwards that the motorcyclist only suffered a badly broken leg but was up by Monday and hoped to be back competing in six weeks. Sunday's first run off to Wallace, will be interesting when he gets his new car and the Gould GR55 goes into Nicola's hands. Second run off to Scott, nice to hear he is doing a full season. FTD shared between Scott and Alex, sharing a one off drive in Alastair Crawford's Gould GR55. Shame Alastair's not doing the full season and we will not see Alex out competitively again until his new car is ready mid year - built around an ex Wallace tub, rumours have it. You did not hear this from me but the BOC's new competition secretary, Martin Greenslade, is a Pork Pie 'expert' thanks to mixing too long with the Bentley Drivers Club. Saturday/Sunday/Monday 30th April/1st/2nd May 2016 TV F1 With no call from the MSA it gave me the chance to watch Cheltenham Town's last game and the presentation of the National League Trophy - 101 points an excellent season. Also gave me chance to catch up on F1 with the Russian GP Practice and thankfully back to that of the last few seasons after the Mickey Mouse system earlier in the season. As for the race, an exciting

first two corners and then I found it interesting but boring, prefer the Channel 4 coverage to that of Sky. Monday whilst catching up on paperwork, channel hopped between BSB at Oulton and Castle Combe, both excellently covered despite the terrible weather. Nice to see John Bradburn out in his BMW but miss him on the hills, nice to see him take home a trophy. Well done to every marshal over the weekend, the weather certainly tested your commitment - do so hope it has not put you off returning. Sunday 15th May 2016 Spectator Monaco Historic Grand Prix Another event ticked off my bucket list. Had the Paddock Club seats overlooking the pits with access to the paddock and excellent view of two large screens. Five British winners out of the six races Jonathon Hughes (Lola Mk. 2), Tony Wood (Tec-Mec 415), Chris Ward (Jaguar C-type), Andy Middlehurst (Lotus 25) and Stuart Hall (McLaren M19A) saw us Brits on our feet singing the National Anthem. The outsider was Italian former GP racer Alex Caffi taking the main event in the Ensign N176. Full grids for every race and brilliant weather for the 10th running of this event. Recommend start saving for the 11th running in May, 2018. Would be interested to know what you all think of the helmets their marshals wear. Saturday 28 May 2016 Spectator Prescott La Vita Rossa. Not working on the Saturday so chance to do a little spectating accompanied by my wife and two non Piston Head friends. Wow what a paddock full of so many Supercars. We started with the 'Beast of Turin' worked down past the two special Bugatti Veyrons, both owned by a single owner, to admire the Benetton F1. T hen a chat to Michael Oliver about the Monaco Historic before a tour of his LaFarrari and new Rolls Royce, he left his Veyron at home. Four beautiful ERAs took some time to pass with chatty owners before looking at numerous Lamborghinis, their yellow blending with the predominantly red of a dozen or so Ferraris all lined up to admire and compete up the hill. An excellent lunch in the clubhouse led us to complete the paddock and shops. 3.30 and wet sand in the clocks led to further cavalcade up the hill enjoyed by us all and at 4.00 headed for home after a truly enjoyable day. Sunday 29 May Club Le vie en Bleu. Club Steward with Ron Warr, MSA Steward David Simons, a member of the MSA Judicial Panel and Chief Observer for HSCC. Nice to have a chat with so many of you either at sign on or up the hill, always made to feel welcome even by the Rescue crew. Yes, I did have two pieces of their chocolate crunch. An interesting coffee and chat with John Hicks is always a must at Prescott. What a beautiful day except the paddock seems a little empty without the Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. S till a Bugatti EB 110 and what I

believe to be a Pagani to admire. Great over the Orchard with a magnificent collection of Bugatti's all road going and driven to the venue. However, my favourite was on the Bonhams stand, a 1946 Bugatti Type 73C, now to find the asking price £270,000 - £320,000. Today enjoyed the hill to paddock with the 500s and the Morgans to watch. My first sighting of a Francis Lombardi Grand Prix which its owner, Fred Moss, believes to be one of only two in England, although this is Monte Carlos registered, Fred preferring Prescott this weekend than staying at home when the GP is in town. Noticed how the car parks cleared about 4.00 even though we were through by 5.20. As usual no protests came our way and I believe only one competitor having an early bath through noise. Saturday 4 June MSA Steward Rallynuts Severn Valley Stages Rally A round of the Mintex MSA Historic Rally Championship and the Pirelli MSA Welsh Raay Championship with the 120 car entry being split almost 50:50 between Historic and Modern. I n the Modern we had a fair few LHD ex WRC cars of British Rally Championship contenders preparing for the Nicky Grist, which is run over similar stages next month. The worry for these competitors seemed to be the tyres were only lasting 15 miles a set and they would need this to be 25 miles on the Nicky Grist! 44 miles of very dusty stages with two runs through Gwibedog, Crychan and Cefn and a single 11.15 mile run through Radnor where the Modern winner Jamie Anderson and Ross Whittock averaged 67mph through the stage in their Fiesta R5. Being the MSA Steward I was confined to the Rally HQ at the Builth Wells Showground with the C of C for the day so missed the action other than watching the entire start, two service halts and the finish. Other than a couple of timing queries, both quickly settled, nothing came our way in protest or appeal. The champagne for the Historics went to Paul Barrett and Dai Roberts in their Pinto engined Escort Mk. 2 after the two favourites hit problems on the final two stages. All done and dusted and heading home at 18.30 following final debrief. Interesting night on Friday spent two hours over dinner with Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, Mike Sones, MSA Council Member and two MSA Safety Delegates, David Walton and Phil Jones, being joined later by Bill Pardow, Competition Secretary of Hagley and District. It was interesting conversation and some good tales flying around. Hope some of you had a chance to meet Rob Jones at Shelsey Walsh National the following day, if not he is attending our Prescott September National, together with the MSA Committee Members. Rob was surprised with the commitment of our Hill Climb Championship Contenders with Gurston the week before Shelsey followed by Loton and Doune taking up the next two weekends. W/C 6th June TV TT and Canadian GP Did everyone enjoy the excellent coverage of the TT as much as I did? When I was over for the TT in the early 50's Geoff Duke was the rider to watch as he tried to be the first rider to make the magic 100 mph lap, failing by

3/100's of a second. This year Michael Dunlop made that 133mph+, what a brave rider but what about the sidecar passengers? No seat belts and hanging on at an average of 116 mph, they must be mad. Four guys lost their lives this year doing what they enjoyed, wonder what H & S will say? And now to the prima donnas of F1, watched qualifying and the race for the Canadian GP. Another handbags for Lewis and Nico at the first corner but F1 needs this to try to maintain interest. Enjoyed the fact that four different makes filled the first four places but my favourite moment was when Sebastian Vettel gate crashed Hamilton's Sky post race intervew to talk about a near miss with two sea gulls. Well worth a visit to YouTube. Wednesday 15 June Marshal Prescott Refresher Drivers School Day Today I spotted six steam trains, four diesel trains, all on time, and twenty nine cars, ranging from a Ford Ka to a Ferrari 348TB, with Edmund Burgess's Bugatti T51 in the mix. Guess where I am? Yes, semi circle out with a working klaxon for company. Brian was on cattle grid, Michael at Esses, with Kevin and John on rescue for company, Tony i/c Pardon's gravel, Jan was Ettores Clear, Dave at Start and Roger, with late sub Bridget, manning the Paddock. Seven morning runs in drying conditions, pouring rain whilst enjoying a first class lunch, thank you Bugatti Owners Club, please note MAC, and to finish five afternoon runs with improving conditions. Heading for home at 16.30. Saturday/Sunday 18/19 June TV European GP, Le Mans and BTCC Croft European GP in Baku. Had to look it up on a map, is it really in Europe? However, what a circuit reminds me of my favourite Macau where I spent many an hour in race control or driving round the circuit. Memories of my visits to the Macau F3. What happened to Lewis in practice? Le Mans and a 24 hour excellent coverage on Eurosport both the day and the night shots and great to see the Ford GT's back. What a finish 2 laps to go and the lead Toyota stops with engine problems allowing Porsche to take the win. Porsche, Toyota and Audi make the top three. After the excitement of the two GP2 the GP was a little bit of an anticlimax for me. Nico clears off in the distance chased by Sebastian's Ferrari, with Lewis 5th. Never been to Croft but caught one of the BTCC, Porsche, Clios and F4 races. Close and quite exciting racing but everyone seems to use the black bits plus quite a bit of green and, if all else fails, one of your fellow competitors. Good crowd but nothing on that at Le Mans. Saturday/Sunday 25/26 June Club Steward Prescott Rain at the wrong time did not help our Midsummer round of the Midland Hillclimb Championship. Certainly the lack of spectators did not help the atmosphere, good job a good turn out of Marshals supported a good entry, with

not too many hold ups. Mike Cartwright was MSA Steward, Mike also Stewarding the Chateau and our Members day, and I was joined by Ron Warr. Saturday the usual two practice runs followed by the National B runs and with the first car on the line the rain, sending the few spectators hurrying for cover. Sunday another practice run, liked by drivers but not too exciting for spectators, followed by two timed runs. Enjoyed the first top twelve run off in the dry with Ed Hollier taking honours in 37.57, but the second started in the rain with Simon Fidoe setting the pace, three competitors decided not to risk their cars then seven could not beat Simon, and it was left to Ed Hollier running last in a do or die run to take his second run off victory of the day. Saturday 2 July MSA Steward Shelsley Walsh Great to see so many of you up the road for the Reg Phillips Trophy Meeting. Enjoyed walking up the hill and stopping for a chat at every post. Also found time to have a talk with MAC's new Competition Secretary, Robin Webb, one of my ex trainee MSA Stewards. I put a few of your concerns to him, some of which he was aware of and others he was hearing for the first time, it might help. The weather was fine and all cars and bikes behaved themselves, although the bikes were way noisier than the cars which caused a little concern. FTD 27.51 to the Philbeam MP88 of Michael Tregoning. Commentary and numerous timing displays kept the spectators informed. Sunday 3 July MSA Steward Shelsley Walsh What a turn out of both competitors and spectators for the VSCC Vintage and Post Vintage Thoroughbred meeting on a beautiful summers day. The cars ranged from the small Austin 7's to the mighty Bentleys and included the Bugatti's T51's of Stephen Shoosmith and Edmund Burgess. FTD 34.01 from the ERA R4D of Nicholas Topliss. Again nice to meet you all working on post. Pleased Kevin and Tim had a very quiet weekend on the unit. Sunday 10 July Marshal Prescott Back to Semi Out for the Pugfest. Richard at Cattlegrid, Michael at Esses, Tim at Pardon, Richard at Ettores, Dave at Start with John and Bridget manning the Paddock. Every car on the hill was a Peugeot and only one managed to beach it at Pardon giving Tim, Michael and Richard something to do. A very interesting Peugeot day. Thursday 14 July MSA Steward Bouley Bay My second visit to Jersey for the MSA Hillclimb Championship. Not quite the same with the Waters Edge Hotel closed which spread all the competitors all over Jersey only all getting together on the day. For first time Hill Clerked

from start usually at finish where Hill Controlled positioned. Hill record broken first by Scott, then Wallace and finally Trevor taking both rounds of the Championship. Weather perfect but only 38 competitors supplemented by bikes and karts. Organisation was excellent and I was made very welcome as were the marshals from the mainland. Saturday 16 July MSA Steward Val des Terres I thought I was made welcome in Jersey but the welcome in Guernsey was even better thanks to the Eddie and Lee show. If you have seen this at Loton you would know what I mean, they return together for their September National. Excellent party the night before, at top of hill, attended by drivers, officials and marshals. Watched practice from paddock and timed runs from top of hill where a motor show was laid on for the spectators, all who attend for free. The day belonged to Scott with two identical times to take the two run offs. The mainland marshals made the trip and nice to see the hill so well marshalled. Enjoyed a bacon butty and coffee with the Rescue crew, one up from one of Jon's chocolates. Perfect event and perfect weather. Sunday 17 July Spectator St Peters Port sea front Displays of competition cars, bikes, classic cars and super cars mixed in with a motorcycle sprint and an Autotest, all for free. What a way to finish my Channel Island visit as a guest to all this on the hottest day of the year. See you on the hills, Maitland Cook
