Lend Lease & St John Bosco College

The New School Location

Welcome to this public exhibition which presents exciting proposals for a new Catholic School and homes at Surrey Lane in Wandsworth.

and other interested parties in the community. This exhibition is in advance of the planning application for the school, Salesian Community House and for residential accommodation on the Surrey Lane site. We will also be submitting a planning application for residential accommodation on the Princes Way site. If planning permission is granted, provision of the new school will be subsidised through the proposed residential development at the St John Bosco College and Princes Way sites. In terms of the latter it should be noted that this proposal will be subject to a separate application. The Joint School Trust of St John Bosco College (SJBC) has exchanged conditional contracts with Lend Lease to develop and deliver a new Catholic secondary school in Battersea, Wandsworth.

11

The build and development of the new school was originally part of the Building Schools for the Future scheme but after changes to Government capital spending the project is now being funded by the Archdiocese of Southwark and the Salesians of Don Bosco. Lend Lease was appointed as strategic partner to Wandsworth Borough Council with the award of preferred contractor for Building Schools for the Future in July 2010. It is for this reason that the proposed residential developments are required to cross subsidise the delivery of a new school. 10

G

St John Bosco College was formed in September 2011 by the Joint School Trust (trustees of SJBC) through the amalgamation of the Salesian College and John Paul II School. SJBC is currently located at Princes Way/ Victoria Drive in Wimbledon and will relocate to the former Salesian College site in Surrey Lane, Battersea within a new school building, which will support the increasing academic achievements and standards of SJBC.

Site Context

St John Bosco Development - Indicative Ground Floor View

The site currently houses two groups of accommodation: Salesian College and the Salesian Order. The Salesians are a Roman Catholic religious order founded in Turin 125 years ago, whose objective is to work with young people who are in need, providing them with education and support. The Salesian College buildings are located to the west of the site and are predominantly 2/3 storeys high, focused around a central courtyard. The playground is located in the central part of the site.

accommodation for the Salesian Order. These buildings are predominantly Victorian and range from 1 to 4 storeys. The southern boundary is closed by a cloister connecting the Salesian accommodation with the College and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church to the south west. 05

The site is bounded to the north by Surrey Lane / Parkham Street that provide both the pedestrian and vehicular access to the site. There is a secondary pedestrian access via Orbel Street that connects into the cloister. 03

06 Salesian Community House Background

Surrey Lane View - East End

The Salesian community house will be used as a permanent residence for the local Battersea Salesians of Don Bosco.

Founded in Turin 150 years ago, the Salesians are a Roman Catholic religious order whose objective is to work with young people who are in need, providing them with education and support.

The Salesians on Don Bosco have had a long presence in the Battersea area having first come to Trott street in 1887 and taking responsibiity for the Sacred Heart Parish and Parish school.

The building will provide living accomodation for the Salesians who like other religious orders live in common. There will also be facilities to enable the Salesian’s charity work including meeting rooms, private offices and a small chapel.

Careful consideration has been given to how the proposed Salesian Community House will relate to the street and offer a new and engaging relationship, particularly to Surrey Lane.

A modern brick façade is proposed that is sensitive to the heritage of the surroundings and also the wider Battersea area.
