Choose Mobil Delvac For Performance Leadership Now, And Always Since its inception, Mobil Delvac has been a recognized leader in heavy-duty lubricant specialization. For more than 80 years, it has been a respected name in the field in helping to extend the life of heavy-duty equipment. Although Mobil Delvac officially came to market in 1925, its technology was being researched and developed well before that. As early as 1913, we were already holding equipment builder meetings and forming the alliances that are so important in the creation and ongoing refinement of Mobil Delvac technology. Over the years this has led to current Mobil Delvac technology obtaining over 2,000 builder approvals and endorsements from more than 300 different Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Mobil Delvac technology was developed to help extend the life of heavy-duty engines. With more than 80 years of collaborative efforts with OEMs, rigorous testing and millions of dollars invested in research, that goal not only remains the same, but is also achieved successfully year after year as we continue to conduct collaborative research with equipment builders to assess lubricant needs and ensure warranty protection.

Our leadership in lubricant innovation provides our customers with enhanced peace of mind, and makes us the company to beat in heavy duty engine oil technology.

Emission Standards For Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines: A Brief History As heavy-duty diesel emissions standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx), solid particulate matter, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide continue to get tighter and tighter, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are forced to find innovative ways to meet those requirements while still meeting customer needs for power and efficiency. Very early engine modifications were fairly simple and involved changes to the piston and fuel injection system that were often invisible to the buyer. But later, OEMs began incorporating exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) systems into their new engine designs. Although each engine manufacturer’s EGR system is different, most work by recirculating up to 20% of the exhaust gas metered and controlled by the electronic management system back into the intake system. The goal of introducing EGR systems is to lower the level of NOx in the exhaust.

managed by advanced electronic controls, takes advantage of modifications to intake, engine, and exhaust components, in addition to a diesel oxidation catalytic converter, to reduce emissions. New designs are now emerging, but there is always a common thread associated with these changes: greater engine oil performance is almost always required to meet the harsher operating conditions of the new designs.

What is EGR?

Another way to meet the earlier standards involved control of engine and fuel injection timing. Caterpillar has taken this approach through the use of its proprietary ACERT (Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology) System. The ACERT system,

The Challenge: New 2007 On-Highway Engine Emission Standards U.S. On-highway Emissions Standards

The Bar Has Been Raised...Again So, what actually happens in 2007? The primary focus of emissions standards has been Nitrous Oxide (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) for more than a decade. While limits exist on other emissions components, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC), the reality is that engines actually emit levels of these components that are many times lower than the EPA limit. NOx and PM, however, are usually the components where equipment performance and emission levels are right at the EPA limits and the EPA has mandated that all model-year 2007 on-highway diesel engines must meet the following reductions in exhaust emissions:

Diesel Particulate Filter

PM - 0.01 g/HP-hr (90% reduction from the previous limit)

NOx - 1.2 g/HP-hr (50% reduction from the previous limit)

As clearly illustrated in the emissions graph, these new reductions are quite dramatic in comparison to previous years which, in turn, represents a significant challenge not only to engine builders, but lubricant and fuels manufacturers as well.

Filtered Exhaust Gases Trapped PM Solids

EGR Challenges for 2007 Up to 40% Cooled Exhaust Gas

More Potential Corrosion More Heat to Coolant

Problems: Heat, Soot, Nitric and Sulfuric Acids

3

More Potential Bearing Wear

How will that reduction be accomplished? To meet the new emissions requirements mandated by the EPA, model year 2007 on-highway engines will be equipped with aftertreatment devices also known as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs). Installed in the engine's exhaust gas stream, these devices act to reduce particulate matter from the exhaust gas and will require the use of low "ash" (non-combustible residue that is left behind from metal-containing detergent additives) engine oils and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to function properly. But, that's not all. In an effort to further reduce NOx, most builders will begin introducing up to 40% exhaust gas recirculation for 2007 EGR engines. That's double the amount of 2006 and older EGR engines which, in turn, doubles the challenge for the engine oil due to the need for greater acid, soot, heat and deposit control. As a result, the API CJ-4 category was developed to address engine oil performance in this more severe environment. So, do you have to worry about your oil? Not if you're using Mobil Delvac 1300 Super! Read on and find out why.

The Solution: Our Proprietary Recipe for Long Engine Life

Mobil Delvac 1300 Super Delivering exceptional performance through patented technology. Once again, we have tapped into the strength of Mobil Delvac's unique technology with patented Trimer componentry. Delivering performance beyond the boundaries of industry requirements of API CJ-4, this quantum leap formulation advancement also brings: ■

Strong chemical structure to enable long engine life

Outstanding wear protection advantages

Effective oxidation resistance, even under severe conditions

Improved frictional properties Trimer core

Delivering unique performance through a mixed detergent system. Detergents in engine oils are mainly comprised of two parts - the "base," also known as TBN (Total Base Number), which neutralizes acids to protect against corrosion, and the “soap,” which cleans engine surfaces just like a hand soap cleans the skin. Mobil Delvac 1300 Super’s mixed detergent system allows for more soap to protect against deposit formation. Combining the optimized detergent system with an overall balanced formula not only allows for a higher starting TBN to protect against acid attack and corrosion, but one that is maintained throughout the drain.

Outstanding Resistance to Oil Degradation and Deposits An oil’s ability to resist degradation can be seen in two areas. The first is its ability to resist thickening and oxidation at high temperatures. The second is its ability to resist deposit formation. Mobil Delvac 1300 Super excels in both of these areas. Piston deposits result in increased oil consumption, and Mobil Delvac 1300 Super significantly reduced oil consumption by more than 75% compared to the industry limits of the Cat C13 Test. In the Sequence IIIF high temperature oxidation test, Mobil Devac 1300 Super thickened less than half of both API CI-4 PLUS and market general API CJ-4 oils.

The Proof: 8 Million Miles of Extensive Field Testing TBN Retention in the Field One of the biggest concerns with API CJ-4 oils is their lower starting TBN in comparison to the starting TBNs of API CI-4 and CI-4 PLUS oils. However, field test results revealed that Mobil Delvac 1300 Super provided improved TBN retention compared to API CI-4 and CI-4 PLUS oils. The fact that the TBN curve for Mobil Delvac 1300 Super (black line as shown on the graphs below) is flatter validates its ability to not only provide outstanding equipment protection, but also to continue to extend drain intervals.

...the brand that I trust.

Maintains Viscosity in the Field Mobil Delvac 1300 Super not only resisted thickening associated with high soot loads in EGR engines where end-of-drain soot levels exceeded 5%, but also resisted breakdown through its outstanding shear stability in Caterpillar engines. Caterpillar engines do not generate much soot, but have a tendency to rip apart (or "shear") the oil due to their high pressure injection system.

Engine Inspections Confirm the Expected With field testing of our new Mobil Delvac 1300 Super still ongoing, we took the opportunity to tear down a Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine that had slightly more than 300,000 miles. The results were superb and clearly showed the advantage of our Mobil Delvac 1300 Super CJ-4 compared to API CI-4 PLUS products. The overall formulation balance significantly reduces sludge and deposits thereby extending the life of the engine.

A one-time top off of an API CI-4 PLUS oil into an engine using an API CJ-4 oil will have virtually no impact due to the dilution effect of the large volume of API CJ-4 oil. However, any time a higher ash API CI-4 PLUS oil is put into 2007 equipment, there will be a negative impact to both the engine and the aftertreatment device and can include: • Engine life reduction
