A quarterly newsletter for Heartland Region Members March 2016, Volume 31, Issue 1

The mission of the Embroiderers' Guild is to stimulate appreciation for and celebrate the heritage of embroidery by advancing the highest standards of excellence in its practice through education, exhibition, preservation, collection and research (www.egausa.org).

Region Director Message Hello Region Members. I can’t believe another Heartbeats is ready to hit the street! Maybe because weather in most of the Heartland has been cold and snowy we have all enjoyed being in a nest with a needle in one hand. I have had some time to stitch now that Christmas is over and the family has all gone home. My little townhouse was busting at the seams over the Holiday, and we had a really good time. Since the fall meeting in San Antonio, I have participated in a teleconference on a committee that is discussing recruiting and retaining members. The company that ran the meeting will be coming out with some suggestions that we will talk about in March at the Kentucky meeting. Maybe after that, I will have something more to tell you about it. It seems to be very hard to come up with new ideas in this area, kind of like we have tried so hard in the past. But, I will let you know what comes out of this pow-wow. I have enjoyed your newsletters, and have read your minutes. Chapters are making efforts in stitching in public, teaching youth, and hosting public shows. All of these activities promote EGA and some may actually help with the falling membership numbers. Keep up the good work! If any chapter has a person they think would enjoy the focus of fundraising please let me know as that chair is still open. I am looking forward to the spring get-together in Dubuque, and I hope lots of you come! The ladies of this chapter have worked hard to give us a good experience. We really like the Shalom Center and its warm hospitality. Please let me know if you have any issues that should be on our meeting agenda for this event. Keep on stitching! Gini Adkins, Region Director

Heartland Region Outreach Report

Submitted by Marietta Mason, Assistant Regional Director Fleur-de-Lis – In 2015 they presented a cross-stitch sampler to a young family moving into their Habitat for Humanity house. The house had been moved to a new location because of the extensive Bee Branch flood abatement work in Dubuque. They presented Blessing Stoles to Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Mercy provides the small stoles and the guild embroiders cross designs on them. The stoles are given to the families of babies and young children who are baptized or blessed while they are at the hospital. They also observed Stitch in Public Day by stitching at the Carnegie Stout Public Library in Dubuque. Prairie Rose – They have refreshed their Habitat for Humanity sampler with new colors for the upcoming season. They are also making and sharing bookmarks with teachers to reward young readers. Prairie Arts Chapter – They made Advent and Christmas banners for the church as a way to repay them for letting them meet without charge. Decatur Needle Arts – Held an exhibit at the Decatur Public Library. They will also be having a teaching pro-gram for Girl Scouts. Cedar Valley – Sent samplers to their sister chapter in New Zealand. Habitat for Humanity Samplers were presented to the Iowa City chapter for homes in Kalona. Needle Arts Guild of Wichita – Donated stitched ornaments to Harbor House, a women’s crises shelter, that were given to the children at the center during the holidays. Quinsippi Needleworkers – They have been named the 2015 George Irwin Arts award winner in the category of Arts Organization. Also, in December they delivered embellished Wee Care gowns to Blessed Beginnings.

Education Report

Submitted By Terry Hanson, Education Chair I’ll be taking over as committee chair again until this term is up. As you might know, this committee was chaired briefly by Cindy Clark who lost her fight with cancer this Fall. Coming up the Spring we look forward to a great program at the Spring Region Meeting at Shalom. Look for the information and registration form elsewhere in this issue of Heartbeats. The same can be found on the region website: http://www.orgsites.com/ia/heartlandega/ Upcoming in the Fall of 2016 the region sponsored class will be “Needlepoint 101”. It’s a great class covering the basics of needlepoint taught by a local Kansas City needlepointer. It might seem like a long way off but plans are being made for the region sponsored class for Fall 2017. Right now, two ideas have been put forward: the class cancelled last year due to Cindy’s illness “I Love Christmas Ornament: Program Building with NeedleArts Magazine”, and “Death Head Buttons”. Other ideas and names for possible teachers are welcome. HeartBeats, March 2016, page 3

Notebook/Leadership Report By Sandra Gordon

Looking Ahead Region Representatives will vote on select changes that will require revising region documents at the Heartland Region 2016 Spring meeting in Dubuque, IA. Watch for a list of the revised pages in the June 2016 HeartBeats. Modified pages will be available on Heartland’s website to download and add to your blue notebook. What blue notebook? Every chapter region representative and every region officer received a new blue three-ring binder notebook at the April 2015 Heartland Region Seminar in Bloomington, MN. The contents include various Heartland and EGA documents, including region by-laws and region policies and procedures

Fleur-de-lis Chapter, in celebration of their 25th Anniversary, will host a class on Saturday, October 1, 2016 in Dubuque, Iowa. The project will be the Thistle Purse designed by Linda Duree. Kits will be purchased from Linda, and the class will be led by Fleur-de-Lis members. Attendees will have the choice of the Thistle design or a custom design featuring the Fleur-de-Lis chapter logo. Sponsors for this event include: Fleur-de-Lis Chapter, Heartland Region & Gay Philips Education Grant. The class is open to all members of the Heartland Region, but class size is limited. Registration will close on April 15th. For more information, contact Ruth Lyon at [email protected] or Marian Walker at [email protected].
