Starliters Dance Showcase: the Show Must Go On And On! By Renata J. Maslowski

Hosting a successful dance showcase once, that highlights the talents of professional dancers, first-timers, and experienced amateurs is a complex skill. To have achieved this feat for 20 consecutive years, as done by Starliters Dance Studio owner, Brian L. Wells, inspires awe and cheers that the show must go on. The 20th Annual Starliters Dance Studio Showcase, held on Sunday, December 2 at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, DE was overflowing with the celebration of current students and a waltz down memory lane for the audience of over 170 members, many of whom have attended prior years’ performances. Certified dance instructor, Brian L. Wells proved again that choreographing the perfect blend of smooth, rhythm, and modern dance styles into a memorable delight is an art form. In addition to Starliters Dance Studio students, the showcase included guest dancers instructed by Charles Hoefgen, Sergei Trubin, Take the Lead Dance Studio, and Universal Ballroom Dance Center. Exquisite dances from Donna Boyle, Sandra Fortuna, and Brian L. Wells all focused on creating an extraordinary holiday celebration.

rousing music. Brian and the 825 Studio Band played live versions of original songs from the recently released CD entitled “This Is Our Great Country.” The audience was persuaded to dance to songs that included "My Brothers and Me," "My Best Friend," "Brother How I Miss You," "Hold Me Close While We Dance," and “Couch Talkin’.” A slide presentation accompanied by Brian singing “My Way” encompassed photos of 20 years of performance highlights that brought back fond memories and reinforced the sentiments that this show must go on and on! The event drew on the talents of adolescent to octogenarian performers, included props and costumes and was brought forth in an unforgettable amalgamation of dance and music. The show exhibited the delicate grace of the Viennese waltz, the passion of tango, the high-flying energy of jive and swing, the smoothness of country two-step, and the sensuality of rumba, bolero, and cha-cha, and more. Whether danced with couples, trios, formation team, or cabaret, the audience was rewarded with plenty of variation to suit every taste for adventure. An evening at the this showcase would be incomplete without The Delaware Valley Dance Spotlight

THE KEY TO SILVER AMERICAN STYLE WALTZ AND FOXTROT By Vivian Beiswenger As I have told many of my students, once you have danced silver American waltz and foxtrot, you will never want to do bronze American style in these dances again. The movement and flow of continuity style makes bronze figures feel so restrictive. Recently, as I ended a silver American style waltz/foxtrot class eight-week series, I was pleased with the students’ progress, but I was also concerned about something that I had noticed time and time again. We had covered several figures in the silver DVIDA syllabus that were new for some students and a review for others. What I noticed was that the students learned the more advanced figures readily, but the corrections that I was making, over and over again, were the same. The measures/ movements that looked/felt the worst were the measures that were part of the basic open left and open right turn figures. That is, in silver American style, after you learn these two basic figures (open left and open right turns), many of the other figures are variations on these figures. The corrections that I was making repeatedly were on these six measures: open left turn, feather finish, advanced twinkle to promenade position, open right turn, open impetus, and continuity ending - you may have other names for these six measures, but I think these are the most commonly used names. When you think about it, if you can dance these six measures well, most of the other silver syllabus figures are only slightly more difficult. If you can dance these six measures with a high degree of proficiency: 

You can move from foot to foot using your standing leg and keep both feet on the floor to control your balance.

You can hold a frame with good posture and partner connections.

You have learned the standard rise and fall and footwork to match the character of this style without falling or hanging on your partner for balance.

look and feel good for you and your partner. Some students who need these exercises the most - who have established bad habits that will take a lot more than three hours to fix - asked, “you are going to spend three hours on six measures?”

When I started dancing, about 25 years ago, there were very few ballroom dancers in my local area (but they were very good) and there were no dances. I had to travel quite a distance to get quality instruction and room to dance. Today, after a proliferation of dances offering free group the correct side lead to stay with your classes with 75 to 125 dancers per class partner rather than push or pull him or and high school programs that taught six to her into side car position. eight weeks of beginner classes and, then, You have learned how to move from let the students loose on the ballroom outside partner position to promenade dance community, we have thousands of position without pushing or pulling on local dancers. Healthy Living: Intractable Pain? Look to the Digestive Tract for the Answer By Dr. Veronica Collings, DC A patient with intractable pelvic pain reminded me of a little known phenomenon: the inability to digest foods high in oxalates and its pain causing effects. Oxalate is found, in varying degrees, primarily in plant foods, including vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, spices, herbs, and almost all nuts and seeds. Yes, with the exception of grains, these are all the foods that I most highly recommend. So why do some people suffer miserably when they eat these foods? When too much oxalate is absorbed into the bloodstream via the gut, it can team up with calcium to form sharp calcium-oxalate crystals. These crystals can then wedge themselves into tissue almost anywhere in the body, causing damage or pain. Most people are able to safely metabolize and process oxalate through the stool. A problem occurs when excess oxalate is absorbed through the gut due to intestinal permeability, or “leaky gut syndrome.” Often, this syndrome is caused by antibiotics because they can kill the oxalate-degrading bacteria in the intestines. There may be a link between excess oxalate and the following conditions: Thyroid disease, fibromyalgia, IBS, vulvodynia, calcium-oxalate kidney stones, cystic fibrosis, sarcoidosis, asthma, COPD, lichen planus, interstitial cystitis, nonbacterial prostatitis, and even Dyspareunia (painful sex). If you suffer from any of these conditions or intractable pain, a trial on a low-oxalate diet can put you on the right track to healing. Withdrawing oxalates, even for as little as two weeks, can determine whether oxalate intolerance is your problem. Meat, dairy, and eggs contain negligible amounts of oxalate. The Low Oxalate Cookbook, Book Two (published by VP Foundation) can give you the guidance for implementing the diet. The information on www.lowoxalate.info is also very reliable. If you eliminate oxalates and feel better, the next step concurrent with the elimination diet is to heal your gut, so that you can reinstate these foods as soon as possible. Gut function is damaged by poor diet. Lots of processed and sugar-laden foods The Delaware Valley Dance Spotlight

improvement continues, then you have too little stomach acid and should use the enzyme complex for 6-12 months. This will fix most indigestion, heartburn, and reflux, as well as eliminating the passing of undigested food into you gut and beginning the healing process. Next, if you have trouble digesting fatty foods, with lots of burping, nausea, pain and even vomiting, the gallbladder probably needs to be cleaned during this process. You need a product of beet plant and root juice extract with the sugar and water removed. Two-three with each meal will improve fat digestion. This applies even more if you’ve had your gallbladder removed because the bile produced by the liver without having the gallbladder for a can damage your gut because they increase proper delivery system will need to be thinned by the beet root juice for it to be the number of fungi, such as candida. properly delivered to and utilized by your They also increase the population of bad intestine. bacteria, as well as worms and parasites. You need to determine if you need additional stomach acid. A huge percentage of the general population over 50 suffers from low stomach acid. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, too little stomach acid will cause acid indigestion because the undigested food in your stomach will lie there for hours, fermenting. This process creates gasses and acids that cause heartburn and reflux. The first thought, when you have chronic heartburn, is to use antacids. In this case, it will make your condition worse. To find out if you have too little stomach acid, you can do the Digestive Enzyme Test. Get an enzyme complex that contains pepsin, hydrochloric acid (HCL), pancreas extracts, pancreatin, and ammonium chloride. These enzymes will aid in digestion of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, will normalize stomach PH, and will support the pancreas. Start by taking one per meal. If your digestion improved, use 2-3 tablets per meal. If 5

of your intestines with the healing properties of okra and pepsin. This is a nutrient complex that contains allantoin and more in order to actually start gut healing. The function of this product is to remove mucous from the walls of the small intestines and thereby enhance nutrient absorption. Use 2-3 capsules per meal daily for a year to help heal your gut. Finally, you need to feed beneficial bacteria to your gut. To do this, eat fermented foods such as homemade yogurt and sauerkraut. Also, take a premier probiotic to reinstate the beneficial friendly bacteria that ultimately will maintain the normal permeability and prevent furthering the devastating effects of “leaky gut.” There are a lot of good ones on the market, as well as many ineffective ones. If you trust your health food store retailer, ask employees for their suggestions. Depending on the severity of your condition, this program should permit you to go back to a diet that includes (Continued on Page 14) January/February, 2013

Dancing for our Kids

KADEL’S KORNER

By Peter Blok

Editor’s note: Peter Kadel teaches international style ballroom at various locations in the Delaware Valley. He is a highly commended Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). He lives in Lansdowne, PA with his wife, Carol, and son, Andreas.

After recent events in Sandy Hook, CT and the child abuse tragedies at Penn State University, supporting any organization that helps protect, educate, and encourage our children has never been more important. It is for these reasons that February 16, 6:0011:00 p.m., should be blocked off in your calendar – oh, and by the way, you will have a blast doing it! Two years ago, after noticing the growing popularity of dancing with television shows such as Dancing with the Stars and So You think You Can Dance, I thought that there must be a way to leverage this trend to do good in our own community. In particular, I had a personal connection to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as well as a love for my local chapter of Exchange Club of West Chester, a national service organization supporting local youth, serving our community, promoting Americanism, and funding centers that help prevent child abuse. So, on February 11, 2012, “Romance in the Dance” was born! A black tie formal gala, held at the Desmond Hotel in Malvern, welcomed 98 philanthropic fans of dance to enjoy an evening of fine dining and entertainment. But not just any entertainment…how about nine exciting performances by local ballroom dance professionals? Wow! Not only was this a unique and welcomed hit by all who attended, but we raised over $10,000 for two very deserving causes. The message is simple: sponsor, dance, attend, donate! “Romance in the Dance” returns with more dancers, more exciting silent auction items, and a new co-beneficiary – the West Chester Education Foundation, an organization headed by Superintendent Dr. James Scanlon, which provides grants for unique and innovative classroom projects that link in-school learning with real-world experiences. Visit www.romanceinthedance.com to find out more about this exciting event and how you can be a part of such a unique and productive fundraising evening. Editor’s note: Performing at this event will be local dancers Brian L. Wells with Renata Maslowski, Mary Wilkerson, Laura Oliver, and Arianne Miismer, Scott Lazarov with Christina Mueller, Kristy Longsdorf with Earl Panaro, Bill & Patti Underwood, Dina Daubenberger with Mike Nichols, and Kristy Longsdorf with Chris Marchegiano. At first, this might seem like a gargantuan project, but you’ll find that taking a few digestive aids and eliminating certain foods until you can tolerate them is a very small cost for the great benefit of a healthy, properly working digestive system and the elimination of “intractable pain.” Yes, “you are what you eat,” but it is also what you can digest and assimilate that will keep you healthy and well.

A Fitness Girl’s Journey through Discovering Pilates By Raquel Anne Gleason, Owner, Rebel Pilates Studio As I take a look back into my own fitness beginnings, I clearly remember thinking that the most effective workout was the one with the most physical movement. By that, I mean the most exaggerated motions that one could teach students in a class. Formats such as kickboxing, stepping, or boot camp classes could really give students that kind of butt kicking, leaving them feeling that they really had been worked over. Years of this thinking had been programmed into my mind, that is, until Pilates came onto the scene. I remember the entire buzz about it and started to wonder if I had been right about the way that I had previously looked at fitness . . . if maybe I should dip my toes into the water and see what Pilates was about.

I know that I have found myself able to work out better in other classes because of Pilates. I know that I am more energized to find creativity because of Pilates, which transformed my life and business in so many ways.

Today, I run a boutique Pilates studio that took Pilates and fused it with bands, rings, balls, steps, and even suspended bands that I hung from the ceiling. I have derived a lot of pleasure from all the brainstorming of I was in charge of the YMCA’s how to transform the next Pilates program in Tampa, FL, when Pilates move. Still, I moved and grown as a group and will considered that it was a fad, continue to do just that. As for this something I needed to add on the “fitness girl,” I still love to teach on program until this craze was over and my step board, but I have found the we could get back to the real workout balance on the other side with Pilates, classes. The USA Dance 2013 National DanceSport Championships will include, for the first time, a Salsa National Championship and the winners will represent the USA at the upcoming World Games in Cali, Colombia, South America. The USA is one of only 24 countries invited to participate by the International Olympic Committee.

Several dances have closed their doors for 2013: Quickstep, Inc. closed its Ardmore, PA studio. The Sellers are still available for private lessons in their home. Barbara Magozzi ran her last Dance Nights dance on December 18. The long-running Fiesta Dance Club has folded and is no longer running dances. We’re sorry to see what was probably the oldest Delaware Valley club disband. La Luna is running only one salsa dance party per month. Hint to dancers: support the venues you like or see them go away, too. Many studios are running fewer dances or none at all.

Our deepest sympathies go the family of Mary Simon, who with her late husband, Bill, owned and operated the former Paso Doble Ballroom in Levittown, PA. Mary passed away at home on November 12, 2012.

Our deepest sympathies also go to Natalia Vikhliaeva Fisher on the sudden death of her husband, Dr. Robert Fisher on December 3, 2012.

Congratulations to Donna Boyle for being awarded a 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award in the Hustle Hall of Fame. Donna is starting west coast swing & hustle classes on Sunday, January 20, in Lansdale, PA. See www.blsdc.com.

USA Dance announced the addition of the Junior Athletes Parents Committee to the DanceSport Council (DSC). Todd Kirrane, Vice President of Operations for the Junior Athletes DanceSport Association (JADA), was appointed to the position of Chair of this new committee.

Congratulations to Mazen Hamza and Izabela for placing second in the World Professional Rhythm Championships and making the finals of the Smooth Show Dance event at the Ohio Star Ball.

Congratulations to Ilya and Amanda Reyzin for placing fourth in both the World Professional Rhythm Championship and the Rhythm Show Dance event at the Ohio Star Ball.

The Silver Linings Playbook movie, featuring several ballroom scenes with local dancers, was nominated for an Oscar.

Congratulations to Frank Regan, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, one of the most prestigious organizations in the United States.

ABOUT THE DELAWARE VALLEY DANCE SPOTLIGHT The Delaware Valley Dance Spotlight is a publication of the Ballroom, Latin, and Swing Dance Center (BLSDC). It is distributed on our website (www.blsdc.com or www.DancingAtTheYMCA.com) free of charge with notification of each issue’s availability to all dancers on our email list (there is no charge to be on our mailing list). Published every two months, our goal is to provide the most current and complete information available at the time of publication about ballroom, Latin, swing, and hustle/disco dance and special events for the tri-state area surrounding Philadelphia, PA. Check out our centerfold calendar of places to dance in the Delaware Valley. Listed on these pages are vendors who provide discounts to USA Dance or BLSDC members. On the page preceding the calendar, you can find contact information for each of these dance locations. We also list special events, such as dinner dances, dance weekends, dance competitions, dance cruises, and special workshops with visiting masters on our Special Events page(s). Organizers of these events are not charged for listings in order to make them as complete as possible for you, our readers. In fact, unlike many other dance listings, with the assistance of Diane Weinberg, we spend a considerable amount of time in collecting information and contacting organizers to make sure that the information that we provide is as accurate and complete as possible at the time of publication. We also provide articles of interest and a free voice for the Delaware Valley Chapter of USA Dance. We encourage recipients to forward this information to others who might be interested and/or to post it on their websites unedited. Excerpts may be reprinted as long as credit is given to The Delaware Valley Dance Spotlight, including the issue months and year and a reference to our website (www.DancingAtTheYMCA.com) to get the complete publication. Exceptions, reprints of articles, or more information can be requested through the Editor, Vivian Beiswenger, at [email protected] or at 255 Hawthorne Circle, North Wales, PA 19454, or by calling 215-855-2711. We invite submissions for publication, but reserve the right to edit the final documents for size, content, or interest to our readers. Note: We do not sell or re-distribute our mailing list to anyone. To receive or access your free copy of Dance Spotlight, click on the mailing list option on www.DancingAtTheYMCA.com, or send your email address to [email protected], requesting to be added to our mailing list and/or our deadline notification list. If you wish to receive a black and white paper copy of the Dance Spotlight mailed to you, please send a check or money order for $40 payable to BLSDC to Vivian Beiswenger, Dance Spotlight Editor, 255 Hawthorne Circle, North Wales, PA 19454 along with your name, address, phone number(s), and email address(s). Please join Vivian Beiswenger and dancers from around the country on one of our luxury cruises on the most famous ocean liners in the world and the number one river cruise line. We have chosen Cunard Cruise Line for our ocean cruises because, in our experience, it offers the best amenities for ballroom dancers: real ballrooms with the largest dance floors at sea, high quality dance teachers, male dance hosts on every cruise, and real ballroom, Latin, and swing dance bands and DJ’s for adults who like to dress up. We chose Viking River Cruises because of the Viking way of first class luxury river cruising.

Our travel club rarely goes to the same place twice. Rather than visit the Caribbean over and over again, our goal is to see the world by dancing from location to location in luxury. Cruises marked with *** are official escorted dance cruises, but all Cunard cruises will have the usual ballroom dance amenities. Viking cruises will provide first rate opportunities for luxury river cruising where larger ships can’t go. These smaller ships sell-out early, so book your 2013 cruise today with a $500 per person deposit. $100 per person cancellation penalty.
