From the Headmaster’s Desk:

The 2008-09 school year… what a ride! Every school year has an interesting mix of the predictable and the unpredictable. Before the year starts, we can well expect that enthusiasm will be high in the early fall, that it will wane somewhat in mid-winter and that there will be a sprint to the end in the spring. We also know well in advance that certain events will take place on certain dates and that certain pieces of our work have to be done in a certain order. Beyond these predictable passages in a year lie many uncertainties that ultimately give each year its own distinctive flavor and history. When each year starts, we know there are going to be some unexpected twists and turns; we just don’t know what they will be. This year’s Commencement on June 12 received positive reviews from all who were present. Personally, I thought it was the best ceremony I have witnessed from among the almost 40 graduations I have been a part of at this and other schools. The combination of superior speeches, comfortable weather, impressive music and strong Class of 2009 unity created an event that reflected wonderfully on Columbus Academy. But perhaps this terrific event felt even better because it was the finishing touch on a year when so many things reflected wonderfully on this Academy. There is no denying that in addition to its many other identities – school, community, alma mater, etc. – Columbus Academy is a business. It is not like most businesses, in that it operates on a not-for-profit basis and is one where the measures of success are more often qualitative than quantitative. In their day-to-day activities, the school’s students, faculty and parents do not have to think much about the business activities of this place but, in reality, the quality of learning in any educational institution is directly tied to its financial health. It is no coincidence that this country’s most highly regarded colleges and universities are those that are most financially sound, or that our weakest public schools are typically those with the fewest financial resources. Thus, the foundation to all we do at this school was threatened with the onset of last fall’s economic crisis, in terms of the significant revenue lost to the school and in terms of its impact on the many families who make up our school community. Any kind of a large-scale crisis can divide or can unite. It can pull people closer together or drive them apart. Looking back at the 20082009 school year, all who care about this school should be heartened by how this community has united to keep Columbus Academy in a position of educational strength. Please let me highlight a few of the ways in which this “coming together” was evident in 2008-2009: • At the request of the Board of Trustees, the school’s faculty and staff operated with a 10 percent reduction on all non-personnel accounts during the year. Furthermore, the faculty and staff were informed early on of a pay freeze for the coming school year. Despite these “hits,” there was no drop-off in their commitment to the best interests of CA students. • The Annual Fund reached its aggressive goal of $1,350,000, and the percentage of donors in major categories (parents, alumni, trustees and faculty/staff) met or exceeded prior year totals. While the economy made it necessary for many donors to reduce their gifts, it was heartening to see so many others “step up” their support in this time of need to enable this important component of the school’s financial health to remain strong. • The school is on track to have full enrollment in 2009-2010. At a time when many independent schools are dealing with reduced numbers, applications to Columbus Academy rose 18 percent this year. The combination of a strong applicant pool and a typically small attrition level provides the kind of well qualified student body so desired at a school like ours. • Our students continue to achieve at impressive levels in so many areas of school life, thanks to their abilities and the leadership of our faculty. Whether measuring our students’ academic performance against national standards, whether assessing how well they fare in Ohio athletic and artistic competitions, or whether evaluating the nature of their daily interactions with others, one can find much evidence of the high quality of boys and girls who comprise our student body.

In addition to the above points, there are many other indicators that the Academy continues to prosper even during this time of economic uncertainty. At the risk of having this article read too much like naïve cheerleading, I will also note that I am not blind to the many ways this very good school can get even better. Our quest of the best is in progress; it is work not yet, or ever, completed. At the same time, we must also pause occasionally to acknowledge how well the school community has rallied in these difficult times. One year ago, I could have safely written that Columbus Academy was in excellent educational health and was probably in the best financial shape it had even been in. Due to circumstances beyond our control and beyond our campus, the second clause of that statement is no longer accurate. Yet our educational health remains strong, thanks so much to the commitment of the people who make up our school community. In this context, our Commencement on June 12 was not only a worthy send-off to the deserving Class of 2009… it was also a fitting exclamation point to the story of the 2008-2009 school year.

The 96th Commencement Ceremony at The Columbus Academy will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the very best in the school’s long and storied history. On a cool but sunny morning, the Senior Commons was filled with friends and family to honor the 91 members of the Class of 2009. The senior girls wore the traditional white dresses and strode in carrying bouquets of red roses. The boys, meanwhile, had red or white roses tucked

After a welcome by senior class president Ben Mozenter ’09, Cary Cup winner Sam Korda ’09 delivered a humorous yet poignant valedictory address that praised the enduring optimism shown by his classmates. Guest speaker Marty Nesbitt ’81 then brought down the house, so to speak, with his heartfelt appreciation of what the Academy did for him and what it was like to witness his closest friend, President Barack Obama, become the most powerful person in the world.

Welcome Speech by Ben

Mozenter,

Class of 2009 President

First I’d like to welcome and thank Mr. Szykowny, members of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Nesbitt, Mr. Mackenzie, faculty, my wonderful classmates, my other classmates, and all the families and friends gathered here today. At our opening Convocation last August, my good friend and our student body president Austin Bening asked everyone in attendance to stand up and join hands. Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to do the same thing. Austin asked us to come together and unite as we moved forward into the new year. The senior class that you see before you took that corny but valuable message to heart. We took full advantage of the opportunities presented to us as seniors. We know, however, that we would not have had these opportunities without your help. First, I’d like to thank the parents and families here today. Your love and support has been invaluable. You have sacrificed so much for each of us to be able to attend this great school. The little things you’ve done haven’t gone unnoticed. Your support and occasional threats have enabled us to become the men and women we are today. The lessons you have taught us will be with us for the rest of our lives. To the faculty, your passion as teachers inspires us. Thank you for putting up with us and guiding us through all of our challenges. The mean value theorem and Farday’s law didn’t catch our attention… you’re what grabbed us and held our focus and sometimes imaginations. We can’t thank you enough for your dedication to us as teachers and just as importantly as friends. As we go off into a world of cold, heartless college professors, know that we will miss you more and more with each passing day. To the staff, many of you have been here for as long as we can remember serving us chicken over biscuits, cleaning up after us and working tirelessly. Your warmth and friendliness are also what makes this place so special. Today it is a great honor to have Mr. Nesbitt speak to us. For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, I think my fellow graduate and darling sister put it best when she said, “Mr. Nesbitt is kinda Obama’s BFF. They even went to Hawaii together.” In all seriousness, we are honored to have you back at CA and are looking forward to the experience and wisdom you will share. Finally, I would like to address my classmates. It has been a wonderful 13 years with you. This school has become home for many of us, and we have been a family to each other. That includes the many hugs we have shared, the tears we have shed and the bickering we’ve endured. I know I will miss all of you. As my teacher and friend Mrs. Arjumand Haque once said to me “Life tests everyone.” Today, we’ve passed one of those tests. I hope you are all just as sad and excited as I am for the future. Thank you.

2009 Commencement:

Valedictory Address By Sam

Korda

Thank you Mr. Mackenzie, faculty, parents, students, and of course, Class of 2009. There is a Chinese saying that goes: “May you live in interesting times.” As a matter of fact, that isn’t just a saying. It’s a curse. And make no mistake, we are living in interesting times. We can walk around with all the music made in the last few decades in our pocket. We can instantly talk with anyone we know, and then send them a video of a panda sneezing. The basic concept of what it means to be a citizen of this country, and of this world, changes almost every month. The voice of the people is louder than ever, and what’s more, those calling the shots are listening more intently than ever before. You can be in Tibet with nothing more than a cell phone and still find out in seconds how the Cavs are doing. KFC is grilling their chicken. When the attacks happened on September 11, 2001, the class of 2009 was about 10-11 years old. We became aware of the world in which we live and formed opinions about it over the next eight years. Those were years marked by confusion and fear more than anything else. As far as everyone knew, anything could happen. Terrorists could attack with a deadly bio-weapon. There could be a shooting at school. The question on the lips of every other talking head on the media was whether or not our nation was experiencing its final, rapid decline from which there would be no recovery. Our leaders in politics were combative and bitter, and shouting matches replaced reasoned debates. Things seemed pretty grim. It would’ve been a safe bet to assume that by this point, our class would be notable only for its mediocrity, and I’d be the one to defend us as we limped our way to graduation. But as it so happens, that is the exact opposite of what has happened. Our class is host to a wide array of people, each of them outstanding in their own way. We have great thinkers, amazing athletes, outstanding artists and skilled performers. We have writers, stand-up comedians, rappers, track stars, dancers and rockers, math wizards and programmers extraordinaire, entrepreneurs and contrarians, flaming liberals, fervent conservatives and everything in between. It gets better. At any other school, these descriptions would go hand in hand with strictly divided groups. The artsy kids would all paint together, the smart kids would all study together, the jocks would all practice together and young Mike MacDougal, a farm boy from Nebraska completely new to the private school life, is here to break all the rules… starring Zach Efron. But with this class, the artsy kids are frequently friends with the jocks, to give you just one example. In fact, sometimes they’re the same people. All that is what you already know about us, or at least stuff you can easily find out. What won’t show up on any list or transcript is what’s really the most amazing thing about the 90 people sitting beside me. It’s the thing that’s the most unique to us, and I knew what it was the second I sat down to write this speech, because I’ve spent my entire childhood with these people. I know you guys, and I know what it’s like to live with you. You guys possess a unique brand of unbridled optimism. That’s the secret that you won’t see on a plaque or a résumé. When I think of what our class

has done, I don’t think of championship titles and SAT scores. We have those, but so do lots of classes, in spite of the times being as interesting as they are. We aren’t the most sophisticated or mature bunch of 18 and 19 year olds… which is nice, because to be honest, it makes things a lot more fun. What we are, though, is the nicest, most optimistic bunch of 18 and 19 year olds I’ll ever know. While I’m sure some of you might defect to maturity, I believe that that won’t change. It’s not an accident that the most quoted movies of our high school career are those of director Judd Apatow, such as the classic “Superbad.” In Apatow’s movies, the hero is not some bad boy who doesn’t play by the rules. It’s always a nice guy who can’t seem to catch a break. His flaws are never that he’s overconfident or doesn’t listen to the advice of others. If anything, he’s polite to a fault. The kids in my class like these movies not just for the crude and juvenile humor, although that’s part of it… okay, a big part of it. But, an even bigger part is the fact that we can relate on such a personal level to the characters because we value their underlying decency. And there’s more. Not only are these seniors the nicest bunch of people you’re likely to ever meet, what makes this group beside me so special and powerful is the way they use optimism as their fuel for doing good. When people in my class recognized a problem or saw something they didn’t like, they did something about it. They take action in their inclusive, optimistic way. They grab a few friends, roll up their sleeves and change it. Whether the change was in the area of school policy or athletics or service or something entirely new, you guys were naturally inclined to do something about it. Not only that, you did so in the most positive, inclusive, friendly way ever. For example, leave it to you guys to start Challenge Day, where we got the administration to do something very un-Academy like. We took an entire day off in the middle of AP cram season to come together as a class and learn to accept our differences. What’s more, it was the start of a tradition, if the fact that this year both the juniors and seventh-graders went through the same experience we did is any indication. Sure, you’ll see people at this and other schools pushing for diversity in student life, which is admirable, but you guys were the ones who made real progress on the stu-

dent level towards making it easier for everybody to be who they really are in the hallways and classrooms of this school. And hopefully not just for these past two years, but from now on. Even in this post-9/11 atmosphere, you guys managed to start a Muslim student organization, which could have been a cause of division, but because of the way you did it, it made us more open-minded, while at the same time we felt totally welcomed and part of it. Sure, other kids and adults have done stuff for gay awareness, but you guys were the ones who did the brave and effective things like founding our school’s Gay-Straight Alliance and showing the short film “20 Straws” during assembly, which have resulted in more kids feeling comfortable being out at our school than ever in its history. Parents and teachers have known for years that we didn’t do enough to make it welcoming here, and you were the ones who stepped up and dove in, creating the Program for New Kids, where kids are making it better for kids to be new here. You made this year’s talent show pretty much the most awesome one ever, with acts from every grade that included everything from rock bands to hula hoops. Instead of just complaining about our disciplinary system, you guys were the ones to create the Discipline and Honor Committee, which gives students an opportunity to get involved in the administration of justice among their peers. You’re the ones who’ve made bridges to help middle school kids, who volunteer for Muscular Dystrophy Camp long after you’ve completed your service hours, who get more kids to participate in Race for the Cure than ever before in the history of this school, and who brought in the marshmallows so we could play Chubby Bunny during Assembly. And it’s more than just a bunch of organizations and movements. It’s the atmosphere of inclusion and diversity that they were born out of that’s the most amazing thing about this class. It’s not something we were taught. We developed it ourselves. There’s no question, our generation is picking up the bill for a lot of problems in both our country and the world. But if I’ve learned one thing this year – other than the fact that a bluefin tuna once sold for just under $200,000 – it’s that there’s something about depressing statistics that no one has bothered to mention. That is to say, these numbers are anything but constant. They can be turned around.

When faced with a problem, no matter how big or small, my classmates instinctively start thinking about how to fix it… and then they do it. These guys sitting beside me, though they’d have every reason to be, are the opposite of cynical youth. That can’t be said for a large portion of my generation. And with any luck, this class will spread ourselves out among the cynical, infusing optimism wherever we go and encouraging meaningful changes. With any luck, we might spread the urge to make art and not war. My class is not just a product of our times. It’s a testament to our spirit that we’ve managed to retain our innocence and optimism amidst all of this panic fostered by the overflow of information that defines our generation. How did this come to pass? Was it our teachers, maybe? Those people who’ve devoted themselves to stimulating our intellects and encouraging us to explore this wide world? Well, I’m sure they might have had something to do with it. Or maybe it was our parents, who raised us better than we could have ever asked? Yeah, that might be part of it. Wait, this is supposed to be about the class, isn’t it? After all, we’re practically family. We are each of us amazing individuals, each with our own traits and talents. But the only way could have developed into such unique people was by a lifetime spent with each other. And yet, we’re graduating. We’re leaving each other and spreading out across the country. We’ll be forced to connect with people we’ve never met before. But I don’t think it’s going to be all that hard, because we’ve grown up in an atmosphere that consciously avoids individualism. Instead, we’ve come together in an effort to contribute to the overall collective. We are all separate but vital ingredients of a recipe, and we’ve baked some pretty good cakes as a result. I’m proud that we didn’t just pursue selfish gains and self-aggrandizing goals as individuals, but instead we strived to make things better for everyone. We’ve repudiated the idea of the “me” generation, and hope instead to usher in the “we” era. That’s the really beautiful part about getting to give this speech. If you didn’t believe the world can become a better place through the efforts of those living there, and if you weren’t about to enter the world with the firm conviction that you were the ones to do so, you wouldn’t be the classmates I grew up with. And you wouldn’t be any fun to hang out with, either. But I can think of no group of people I’d rather head to a party with, and more importantly, to head out into the world with, than this particular collection of talented and amazing people. So class of 2009, let’s go out there and do awesome stuff like I know we will.

Commencement Address By

Marty Nesbitt ’81

Marty Nesbitt ’81 addresses the Class of 2009

Good morning and congratulations to the Class of 2009… and congratulations to your parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, cousins, teachers, friends, coaches and everybody else who played a role in getting you to this point in life’s journey. It’s a tremendous accomplishment, and you all should be commended for a job well done. I would like to say thank you to my wife Anita who has been working on a commencement address of her own that she is giving tomorrow to resident graduates at The University of Chicago Medical School. She is not here now but, without her support, I would not be here either. She and the rest of Nesbitt Nation stay really busy. Only my youngest son Xavier could make it today. I would also like to say thank you to John Mackenzie, Erich Hunker ’81 and the Board of Trustees at The Columbus Academy for inviting me to participate in this year’s commencement ceremonies. I hold a certain reverence for this institution. It’s played such an important role in my life. There is not a single day that goes by without me thinking about what this institution and the community that forms it did for me. So I am humbled and indeed honored to be invited back to deliver this address. I have actually long anticipated coming back to speak here in front of a crowd. In fact, I have daydreamed about it many times. But, I must tell Erich, John and the Board that in none of those daydreams was the speech a commencement address. They were all acceptance speeches… acceptance speeches for an induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame. So I want John and Erich to know that should the occasion ever arise, that’s a speech I could give! I could whip it up quicker than one of my dashes down the sideline of Mike Marsh Memorial Field. I could deliver the address at a moments notice… if the call should ever come. (That was shameless, wasn’t it?) There’s irony in there somewhere though, isn’t there? The notion that not even I, in all of my wildest dreams (not that my Hall of Fame dream is a wild one mind you)… but that not even I ever thought I would one day be back here delivering an address that is both important and complicated and totally unrelated to sports. An address that’s important because it’s being delivered to a class of graduates who are, no doubt, a representative sample of the best and brightest this country has to offer; a group of graduates who will begin their journey at an inflection point in U.S. and world history; the first group of graduates after the historical election of this nation’s first African-American President; a group that will be called upon by destiny to lead our world through an era of economic globalization, environmental consciousness, racial tolerance and integration, and the pursuit of world peace; a group that will be called upon to lead us through an unprecedented era of change. Everyone that I know who is giving commencement addresses this season, including the President and First Lady, recognizes this point. The class of 2009 is a special group that will be asked to play a leading role in forging a new and better paradigm for us all to live by. So it is an important address.

Academy Magazine

Commencement And it’s a complicated address for me to give; complicated by my love for this institution; complicated by the fact that I owe so much to the teachers, coaches, staff and friends that were here during my journey. These people had my back for four years and beyond. They loved and nurtured. They pushed and prodded. And when I fell on my face trying to become student body president or performed miserably on an exam, they encouraged and never judged. And they ignited within me an intellectual curiosity that became a blaze in college and graduate school. My debt of gratitude to those people and the emotion surrounding my feelings for them complicate this task. So admittedly, I have stumbled for the right message. I stayed up late nights with my commencement thoughts broken only by the stream of infomercials reflecting America’s obsession with six pack abs and buns of steel. After days of struggle and several near-purchases of the ab-roller and tush-toner, I consulted a friend… a friend who is actually pretty good at giving difficult speeches. The advice he provided was good, but not very useful. After I asked for advice, he leaned back while sitting at his desk aboard Air Force One and said, with confidence: “There are three things you have to do in a commencement speech – first, say something funny; second, say something inspiring; and most importantly, REMEMBER IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU!” I looked at him and laughed almost as hard as I did when he told me he was going to run for the U.S. Senate. I said, “That advice coming from you is kind of like Captain Sullenberger handing over the controls to his U.S. Airways flight and saying, ‘Yeah, just land it right there on the Hudson River.’ No problem. Or like LeBron James saying, ‘Yeah, just outrun the small guys and leap over the tall guys and throw the ball through the hoop.’” And then one day, while working on an early draft and chuckling inside about the irony that I had been even asked to give this message, it hit me. It hit me like a ton of bricks. THE IRONY IS THE MESSAGE. The notion that an African-American student from a lower middle class family and single-parent home who was only lucky to win a scholarship to attend a school that he did not even know existed; the notion that he would go on to graduate with honors from college and win a fellowship to business school, build a $400 million company from scratch and sit at the table to help devise the strategy that won the most historic election in this country’s history; the irony that that kid would be standing before you today is the message. And this message is not a violation of Presidential orders because I am not making this speech about me, it’s about you. It’s about you knowing and accepting two facts today – one, anything is possible; and two, everything that you need to fulfill your dreams and aspirations already lies within you. Now I know whenever somebody says to me “anything is possible,” they seem to be implying a certain improbability. I’ve used the phrase that way myself… once, many years ago, when my wife asked if – one day – I might see myself with five children. And another time just after a long run on the beach with a buddy who asked if I thought he could be President. I told them both, “Well… I guess anything is possible.” I meant, of course, in both cases, “possible but not probable.” Now, of course, I have five kids and my jogging buddy is President. But here’s the thing about the long path to an improbable future… it’s traveled by consistently pursuing a set of incrementally – achievable – objectives and a set of high ideals. I will leave the explanation of how that applies to my wife and me ending up with five children to your classmates who took AP Biology. But here’s how it applies to Barack Obama. You see, the President didn’t decide one day long ago that he wanted to be “President.” He never had a secret ambition to rise to the highest office in the land. What he decided to do was live his life by a set of principles. He decided to pursue a set of obtainable objectives and a few high ideals. He decided to hold to a belief that he should be kind and compassionate; that he owed the community in which he lived a debt of service. He made up his mind that he would always remain willing to put the interest of others ahead of his own. He decided he would do his homework and shave his beard. He’d tuck in his shirt and pull up his pants. He decided he would never get stuck on one side of an argument, and that he’d

Summer 2009

always try to view things from other’s perspective. He decided he’d stay curious about the world around him and stay intellectually honest. He decided he’d always be an unselfish teammate and always play to win. And you, my friends, can do all of those things, too. Except ladies, let me advise you against shaving your beards… laser therapy is a much better option. The president and I became friends over the course of many years not because I let him win at hoops but because we learned that we share the same values. We learned that neither of us had decided to focus on a dream but rather execute against a set of obtainable objectives and pursue some high ideals. I think we began to recognize this in each other on the same night. It was the night he lost his congressional race against Bobby Rush in 2002. I was chairman of the finance committee for that campaign. We worked hard and raised a lot of money, but we got crushed on election night. The President was down. But it struck me that he was not feeling sorry for himself. He felt bad for those that had supported him. He felt that he owed the community his service and that by losing the election he had blown his chance to do his duty. The race, in his mind, had nothing to do with him but everything to do with others. I had never seen an attitude like this from a politician. And that night my admiration for him grew. When the concession speech had been given and our pathetic celebration ended… when the confetti and deflated balloons lay on the floor and everybody had gone home to resume their lives, I stayed. I stayed because I realized he was a good guy who had run for congress for all the right reasons. I stayed because he lost… NOT because I had some thought that he might one day be President. I stayed because it was the right thing to do. You see, I was holding on to a silly ideal that I am my brother’s keeper; that I should put his needs ahead of my own. That night he lost an election, but he won my trust and I suppose, in turn, I won his.

That exact dynamic can play out myriad times in a lifetime with almost everyone with whom you engage. Your peers, neighbors and fellow citizens will learn of your values and the strength of your ideals, and then they’ll give you their trust. And once they’ve given you their trust, they’ll soon ask that you join their team; and once you have joined their team, they’ll ask you to lead their cause. They may ask you to head their company or chair their board. They may ask you to sit at the table and help devise a plan to win an election. They may even ask you to lead the free world. This is how the world works. I know it for sure. It’s been tested and found true. I learned it from my mother, whose capacity to reach for that incremental objective and hold onto her ideals under dire circumstances is unsurpassed. And here is the good news for you all… I also learned it right here at The Columbus Academy. I learned it from coaches and teachers like Dan Barren and Bob Kirk ’67. I learned it from Bo Dixon and Tim Golding. I learned it from Phil Hess and Mac Dun-

can, Rainey Taylor and John Exline ’64. I learned it from K.C. Morrin and John Detrick ’53. I learned it from Jack MacMullan. So lose the anxiety about whether you’ve made the right school choice or you’ll choose the right major. Forget about your career path and whether you’ll eventually land the right job. Remember this: everything you need to be successful in life – everything you need as you race down that path to your improbable destiny – you’ve already got inside you. You’ve learned it from your family and friends… you’ve learned it right here. As I speak to you today, I am in the midst of a very complicated financial transaction. It involves complicated legal constraints, a nuanced financial dynamic and multiple parties with divergent interests. Now I was an economics and accounting major in college and worked in financial planning at a Fortune 500 company. I graduated with a specialization in finance from one of the finest business schools in the land. Guess who I called for wisdom and guidance? My high school basketball coach, Jack MacMullan. We talked about things for hours. I bored him with the complexities of the situation; walked him through the financial structure and legal dynamics. I told him how frustrated with the circumstance I had become and how I thought I might use some trickery to get things to break my way. He responded by saying (and those here who know him will recognize his tone), “Nesbitt, I’m not sure I understand any of that business and legal crap, but let me tell you this – forget the trickery. No matter what happens, stay true to yourself. It’s gotten you where you are, and it will take you beyond.” Our nation, indeed our world, will call on the Class of 2009 to deliver big things. At times, the demands will challenge you and test your will. You may become frustrated and tempted to take short cuts or resort to trickery. But if as a group, you’ll reach for those incremental objectives and hold on to your ideals… if you’ll wake up early and be on time… if you’ll be your brothers’ keeper, put other’s interests ahead of your own and hitch your wagons to causes greater than yourselves… you’ll collectively shift the paradigm under which we live, and you will lead yourselves and the world to an improbable destiny. Thank you and congratulations to the Class of 2009. New Marks

New As it opens its 99th year this August, Columbus Academy will

have a fresh new look after unveiling a new set of logo marks to better represent its long history and standing as Central Ohio’s premier PreK-12 college preparatory school. “Columbus Academy’s Board of Trustees and Administration

decided an update to our school logos would serve us well as we prepare for our second century of providing a top-notch educational environment,” Headmaster John Mackenzie said. “In doing so, we’ve maintained some traditional aspects of the school’s identity while also modernizing various marks to bet-

Look

for a New Era

Strategic Impetus from the Board On June 7, 2006, Columbus Academy’s Board of Trustees approved a five-year Strategic Plan that included 52 action items organized into six central initiatives: academic excellence, composition of student body, personal development, college preparation, communications and marketing, and resource support. Communications and marketing was one area the plan marked for “immediate emphasis” – meaning it would receive additional attention at the Board level on an ongoing basis. Specifically, the Strategic Plan outlined the following: “To improve its regional profile, the school must be more aggressive about positional marketing throughout the year, and not just in relation to admissions. Although the Academy’s admissions and enrollment picture are now very strong, a consistent marketing plan will help keep the school’s name prominent as an option to other private and public schools and will help continue the positive admissions profile.”

To carry out this mandate, the Board established a Marketing Committee consisting of the Board President, several senior administrators including the Headmaster, and some of the most respected marketing professionals in central Ohio with close ties to Columbus Academy (see Page 19 sidebar). This Marketing Committee began meeting in 2007 with the following goals: • Develop a marketing plan designed to promote the advantages of a CA education and heighten awareness of the school within the Greater Columbus community; • Assure a strong applicant pool for all grade levels, with particular emphasis on grades 5 and higher; • Separate CA from local and regional competition; • Evaluate effectiveness, consistency, management and implementation of all current external and internal communications vehicles; • Begin planning for the school’s Centennial in 2011.

New Marks

The project was divided into three phases: 1) Research and Assessment, 2) Identity Development and Design, and 3) Awareness and Visibility Campaign. To date, the first two phases have been completed and the third phase is now beginning.

Phase 1: Research and Assessment In the spring and summer of 2008, the Marketing Committee partnered with The Strategy Team, a local research agency, to answer a variety of critical marketing questions. Another goal, to address a specific admissions need, was to identify marketing approaches for the school to attract the top students in Central Ohio, especially those who will enter the fifth through ninth grades. The research included a review of best-practice independent schools similar to Columbus Academy, an Internet survey of alumni and multiple focus groups with CA parents, students and faculty as well as with parents and students not affiliated with the school. The result was a plethora of information upon which a “brand” could be built.

Phase 2: Identity Development and Design With research in hand, the Marketing Committee sent out a Request for Proposal (RFP) to over a dozen local and national agencies. After a lengthy review and interview process, the Columbus-based firm Integrate was selected to help develop a brand identity based on the research and then to help create an awareness and visibility campaign for the school. Throughout 2009, the Marketing Committee has been working with Integrate on modernizing the school’s identity marks while still reflecting the institution’s proud history and tradition. After an exhaustive process of discussions, presentations and tweaks that involved faculty and staff, various parent and alumni groups, and the Board of Trustees, a new set of school logos is ready to be revealed.

Primary Identifiers

d. Official Seal e. Maroon Seal f. Monogram

The school’s primary identifiers now include a ship within a shield along with the words “Columbus Academy.” The Spanish Caravel has long been used in the school’s marks, dating almost all the way back to the institution’s founding in 1911. Paired with the word “Columbus,” the caravel represents the voyages of discovery by the city’s namesake. Font choice is also a fundamental part of any visual identity system. The one chosen is Paradox, which offers a modern typographic form modeled after traditional serif types created during the time of Christopher Columbus.

g. Monogram in Shield h. Viking Mascot

New Marks

The primary logo can also be used with the school’s motto – In Quest of the Best – which remains unchanged. After much deliberation, the Marketing Committee decided the longstanding motto still reflects Columbus Academy’s high standards in both attracting the top students and faculty and helping them achieve full potential. Various uses one will soon see will be in publications and on letterhead, the school website and other more public venues.

Alternate Marks Columbus Academy’s new seal also incorporates the ship within a shield surrounded by the school’s name and founding date. This mark will be reserved mostly for official school documents. Only a minor change was made to the school’s interlocking CA so that the “C” is now to the upper left of the “A” as opposed to directly on top of it. This mark could best be described as a “monogram.” For primarily athletic and various school spirit uses, a “CA” within a shield has also been created in the school’s colors, which remain maroon and gray. Of all the changes or updates, the biggest departure from what was previously used is to the mark representing a Viking or an official “mascot.” Along with many other schools and entities, Columbus Academy was recently contacted by the National Football League’s licensing department with specific instructions to stop using a likeness of the Minnesota Vikings’ trademarked logo (the profile of a Viking wearing a helmeted horn). The result is a new image that features an authentic Viking helmet (i.e., without horns) that Columbus Academy can uniquely call its own. As an academic institution, it was important to many involved that a new mascot image be more historically accurate rather than play on cartoon-like stereotypes.

Summer 2009

The campaign will mostly be geared towards gifted students in grades 5-8 in order to meet current admissions needs for the Upper School. Although the exact buying strategy is still being finalized, many of the spots will be in non-traditional and out-ofhome media. Social media – where our target audience spends a great deal of time – will certainly be prominently in the mix. Even so, the campaign will have the flexibility to incorporate all three divisions and will be able to highlight myriad facets of the school to parents and students alike, including the upcoming Centennial celebration in 2011. Although there is a new look for a new era, rest assured Columbus Academy remains In Quest of the Best as it heads toward its second century of excellence.

Phase 3: Awareness and Visibility Campaign

Shane MacElhiney, Head of Upper School Bob Lee, Director of Communications

Throughout the fall and winter this school year, central Ohio communities will begin to see advertisements for Columbus Academy utilizing some of these new logos. The advertisements will draw attention to what makes this school so different and so special: the gifted students and talented faculty, the inclusive culture and impressive facilities, and the results from having the highest standards.

Walter Wurtele Estabrook ’36 of Thorton Way died April 28, 2009, at Hill House Assisted Living in Bath, Maine, at the age of 91. He was born in Columbus, the oldest son of Angus Davis and Winifred (Wurtele) Estabrook. Walter graduated from Columbus Academy in 1936 and from Wesleyan University in 1940 with a degree in English. He served in the Navy from 1943 until 1946. On June 26, 1947, he married his true love, Jane Elizabeth Seyforth. In 1956, they moved to Columbus and lived there until 2005 when they relocated to Maine. Walter received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Columbus Academy in 1994 and was a past president of the school’s Alumni Board. He was a member of the St. Albans Episcopal Church in Columbus and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick. He was an enthusiastic sales representative for Brown Steel Company but his enduring passion was Camp Kawanhee for Boys in Weld, Maine, where for over 30 years he and Jane lovingly and tirelessly managed the operation of the camp. Jane predeceased him by four weeks. Their infant son Thomas Harvey Estabrook died in October 1953. Walter’s brother Allan Kelsey Estabrook died in February 2008. Walter is survived by three sons – John Estabrook ’67 and wife Iris of Durham, N.C., Richard Estabrook ’70 and wife Ann Havener of Brunswick, and James Estabrook ’74 and wife Dorothy of Columbus – and daughter Kate Schoedinger and husband Ferdinand of Weare, N.H. SUMMER/2009

in National Events Columbus Academy to Add Two Sports Programs Bowling and boys lacrosse will soon be added to Columbus Academy’s offerings, Headmaster John Mackenzie announced this spring. Bowling will be offered to both boys and girls during the winter athletic season while boys lacrosse plays a spring schedule. At its meeting on April 15, the Board of Trustees approved the following recommendation from its Education and Student Life Committee (See Side Bar). Ordinarily a decision of this kind would include specific dates for the introductions of these new sports. In consideration of the current economic environment, however, the Board has deferred making a commitment about specific start-up dates. The Board’s approval comes with an acknowledgement that the addition of these sports will strengthen Columbus Academy’s program offerings and broaden its opportunities for students. As such, there is a desire to start these new sports soon. At the same time, the current economic environment necessitates that the school carefully examine its funding priorities and take time to assure that any new initiatives can be sustained over time.

After a thorough examination of Columbus Academy's athletic offerings, the Education and Student Life Committee offers these recommendations: 1. Coed Bowling and Boys Lacrosse should be added as interscholastic sports offerings. 2. Provision will be made in the 2009-2010 budget for the capital cost of a practice field and start-up operation costs for lacrosse, but considering the economic circumstances and other factors affecting interscholastic competition, the Administration may elect to introduce either sport at a later date. 3. The Administration shall be responsible for determining the best methods of introducing these sports in regard to such matters as: facilities and field space, Upper School and Middle School participation, introductory intramural or clinic type opportunities, etc. 4. No other new sports should be introduced at this time. After review, there is not strong and convincing evidence that any other sports would be sustainable over time and would provide the experience desired for Columbus Academy students. 5. All of the currently offered interscholastic sports should be continued.

The Vikings (22-1) won or led in all 10 matches it played in the semifinals and finals to claim the school’s 25th team state championship in nine different sports. Academy freshman Chad Buchanan won both his matches at No. 3 singles while the second doubles squad of senior Nate Chan and sophomore John Hendrix also won twice, including the clincher in the finals. In the Division II state doubles final, Academy’s duo of junior Andrew Enslen and senior Joey Frank lost by a 6-3, 7-5 score. The doubles team of senior Austin Griffin and junior Eoghan Bahnson lost to the eventual champs from Cuyahoga Valley Christian 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Enslen won the team and league MVP awards and joined Frank on the All-Ohio first team. Griffin and Bahnson, meanwhile, were all-state second-teamers while Buchanan was the team’s Most Improved Player. The Vikings then lost to Hathaway Brown by a 13-8 score in the state semifinals to complete their season with a 12-5 record. For her efforts, Dillon was named first team all-state as well as honorable mention All-American. Senior Layne Averill (MVP-Offense) also made the all-state first team and joined Dillon and junior Molly Belcher as first team all-region. Wise, the Viking Award winner, was named to the all-region second-team along with seniors Natasha Leickly (MVP-Defense) and Hannah Reis. 2008-2009 ANNUAL REPORT ON GIVING

LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT & DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE CHAIR

Thomas E. Szykowny P’04 ’07 ’10 Board President

Kathleen K. Starkoff P’11 Development Committee Chair

Dear Friends of Columbus Academy, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are pleased to write and present to you a combined Academy Magazine and 2008-09 Annual Report on Giving. Upon witnessing and dealing with some rather unprecedented economic news during most of the school year, we decided to pool resources in order to print and mail one publication instead of two this summer. Please know first and foremost that the school’s finances are sound. Steps were carefully taken last fall to end the year with a balanced budget. As our short term investments and our endowment were being negatively affected by the economy, the school took steps immediately to cut expense budgets by a minimum of 10%, saving close to $350,000. In addition, our enrollment remains strong and steady, and it appears we will be entering next school year fully enrolled. The Board, the Finance Committee of the Board and a newly formed Investment Committee are also monitoring all of our investments and transactions closely. In addition to cost savings and enrollment, we are incredibly thankful to report that the Annual Fund not only met its goal but exceeded it by 5%, raising $1,420,000 from 1545 donors. This is terrific news for our community, and those who are responsible for helping achieve this record total are listed on the following pages. It is particularly important to acknowledge this achievement as the Annual Fund is the school’s fundraising priority, and makes up almost 7% of the operating budget. Specifically, it is important to note that parent participation in the Annual Fund – even during this past year – increased to a record 78%! We are mindful of the demands parents feel through tuition and other expenses, and are humbled by the response from them to keep their children’s school strong. Alumni giving maintained its record of participation from last year, as 28% of all Academy graduates cared enough about their alma mater to continue to support the school. Our generous faculty and staff led all donor categories in participation, as 97% of the school’s employees supported the Annual Fund. Not to be outdone, another record was achieved as almost 50% of our most recent group of alumni – the Class of 2009 – gave gifts for the first time. What an exciting barometer for the future! Our Parents’ Association (PACA) increased their support of the school, through the new Spring Gala event held in April, the popular Charlie David Dinner, the Book Fair and other revenue sources. We are grateful for the hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours PACA provides for the benefit of our teachers and students and for PACA’s energy and effort in creating the exciting, successful Spring Gala, which replaced the Antiques Show. We are relieved the past fiscal year is over and that it ended positively, but we know more work is ahead of us as the 2009-10 school year approaches. However, if the past year showed us anything, it showed us that Columbus Academy is a strong community, and that all constituents – parents, alumni, faculty/staff, students, grandparents, parents of alumni and friends – care very much about the well-being of this wonderful place and that they will partner with us, in both good and challenging times. Thanks to you and our many Annual Fund volunteers, Columbus Academy will continue to meet its most important goal of providing the best possible education in central Ohio for our students. Thank you again.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING COLUMBUS ACADEMY!

Academy Magazine

JoAnne Adams How many years have you been at Academy and what have been your duties? I did my student teaching in 1994-95 while coaching three sports and was hired full-time in 1995, so this will be my 15th year at Academy. I originally taught middle and high school PE while also teaching 7th grade health. When Jim Stahl retired, I took over his schedule in lower school PE and have happily taught PreK through 2nd grade for over a decade now. I also love working with 3rd grade students in Little Dribblers. I have coached field hockey, basketball, track and lacrosse.

What is your educational background? I graduated as a lifer from Lake Ridge Academy – a small private school outside of Cleveland. I went to Ohio University, where I graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1994.

Why did you become a teacher/coach? I’m actually pretty surprised I became a PE teacher. In elementary school, I dreaded PE and would try to use every trick in the book to get out of class. When I was in third grade, I finally realized that being a foot taller than my classmates had its advantages and started playing basketball. Once I started to gain a little confidence, I fell in love with sports/games and the rest just fell into place. I also loved hanging out in the gym throughout my high school days, and the close bonds that I formed with my coaches helped push me in this direction.

Academy Profile

Summer 2009

How did you come to CA? Anne Horton was my high school field hockey and basketball coach. We kept in touch throughout college. Once I could choose where to do my student teaching, she offered to help by introducing me to former headmaster Chip MacKelcan. I ended up student teaching here and coaching JV and varsity field hockey with Anne. There was an opening in the PE department that year, and I luckily landed the job.

What might surprise people to know about you? Early on in my teaching career, comedian and former CA parent Rob Schneider came to my PE class and I taught him how to climb the ropes in the Barton Room.

What are your fondest memories while at Academy? There are too many to list! I think that the past two years in particular have made me very appreciative of everyone at Academy. I am very thankful to the people I work with and girls that I have coached for helping me stay positive. I can look back at certain classes or teams and know that I wouldn’t be here without their support.

If I wasn’t a teacher…? I’d be okay with being a lottery winner.
